An alarming teaching shortage Low pay and very few incentives are sending many into other professions By Larry Blustein sfsuntimes@aol.com As a retired Miami-Dade County school teacher, Andrea Manasco is not surprised by the news that there is a shortage of teachers in South Florida. While many do not appear to be concerned, those in the know, understand what can happen if something is not done to stop this ball from rolling downhill. “When I first began back in the mid 1970’s, the profession was geared toward promoting the teachers and giving them incentives that kept them enthusiastic in the classroom,” Manasco recalled. “But times started to change, and

what was such a priority back when I was heading to college, is nowhere what it used to be.” With cuts in pay and very few incentives to make this a lifelong job, potential teachers went in another direction. This once important position to have, educating the youth and making generations better, was not so honorable, anymore. There was the belief that no matter how many recessions we went through, the teaching profession would be left alone. After all, it was deemed by many to be on the same level as fire and pol-
