Record crowd greets the 32nd Annual South Florida Chassidic Chanukah Festival
Larry Blustein
Rabbi Levi Tennenhaus stood with the
microphone in one hand ready to welcome the world to an event that has become one of the most impressive of its kind. As Rabbi Tennenhaus looked into the camera of the internet feed around the globe, the 32nd annual South Florida Chassidic Chanukah
Festival, taking place on the 7th night of the holiday, was under way from Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach. What began over two decades ago as a Hollywood Young Circle gathering of a few hundred people coming together to celebrate the holiday, had

now grown to numbers that many in attendance could never imagine. With the well over 15,000 on hand to sing, eat and toast
this magnificent event, the "largest Chanukah festival" was indeed one that everyone will remember and point to, as this is no longer just a neighborhood
event. Families came from as far away as Palm Beach and Southwest Miami to celebrate the holiday. –––––––––––––––––––– BLUSTEIN, Page 9A

‘AROUND THE CITY OF CHOICE’
Wishing all our residents and business owners a Happy New Year!
The New Year is not only a time to look forward but also a time to reflect on the past year. Reflecting on successes, challenges, and opportunities are critical to plan for the future year. The year 2012 brings with it many positive operational changes and investments to the City of Hallandale Beach. We look forward to the opening of a new Community Center at Foster Park located at 609 NW 6 Avenue. The new facility will be the first newly constructed City facility to receive a LEED certification. This is one step in the right direction the City is taking to reduce the carbon footprint for our future generations. The new facility is estimated to be approximately 9,000 square feet and will have a banquet room with full kitchen, meeting rooms, a small exercise room, and a library/computer room. The Community has been hard at work assisting in the planning of the building which will include a historical wall, cornerstone, and of wall of distinction to highlight families that have been in the Community for many years. The facility is estimated to be completed in June and we look forward to celebrating its grand
opening. Other projects moving forward this year include the redevelopment of our Parks System. This past year the City adopted a Citywide Parks Master Plan. This year, we will begin the design of the first three parks to be redeveloped which include Joseph Scavo Park, BF James Park, and South City Beach. The site designs respond to contextual conditions, provides for the easy phasing of park construction and allows the passive nature of the park to remain unchanged while allowing the inclusion of more active uses that respond to community needs and desires. Some highlights include a dog park at Scavo Park,; B.F. James Park will include a Family-Oriented Pool, an element that is desired and needed by the surrounding commu-
nity and. South City Beach will include changing rooms, upgraded bocce ball courts, handicapped accessibility to the beach, and additional pedestrian connection to A1A. The designs of all the Parks can be found on the City's website at www.cohb.org. Other new changes in the City include the City's' budget process. To provide for more Community input and involvement, the January, February, and March City Commission/City Manager Workshops will be dedicated to the discussion of the Budget. In addition, the City will hold its annual Quadrant Budget Awareness Town Hall Meetings during the month of February. At these meetings, the City Commission, City Manager, and staff will be present to discuss the City's budget and ongoing and upcoming projects within your Community. There will be short presentation regarding the State of the City's Finances but the true purpose of the meetings is to provide the citizens and businesses and opportunity to give input on what types of projects and programs you would like incorporated into the City's budget. I encourage resi-
dents to get involved in our Community. We have a wonderful City with many ways to participate. Not only does the City have many Boards and Committees, but there
are numerous great organizations in our City that are always looking for volunteers. On behalf of the City Commission, we look forward to a great year with many posi-
tive programs, and we look forward to your participation and hearing your thoughts and ideas. Very Truly Yours, Mayor Joy Cooper
Mount Sinai Medical Center receives continued accreditation for graduate medical education program
MIAMI BEACH – Mount Sinai Medical Center of Florida has received a continued accreditation for a five-year cycle from the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). ACGME is responsible for the accreditation of all post-MD medical training programs within the United States. The review committee, comprised of up to 15 physicians, commended Mount Sinai for its demonstrated substantial compliance with ACGMEʼs institutional requirements without citations. The continued accreditation is a testament to the commitment Mount Sinai has made since 1959 to training tomorrowʼs health care providers. As a statutory teaching hospital, Mount Sinai brings together the best and brightest minds in medicine, creating a challenging environment where emerging physicians are trained by faculty who are well versed in the latest medicine based on the most current scientific data. Each year, Mount Sinai trains more than 160 residents and fellows in 17 medical specialties, at an investment of more than $20 million dollars. Mount Sinai also enhances its educational programs through unique partnerships with other medical institutions such as New Yorkʼs elite Columbia University. The collaboration in the departments of cardiology and urology are the only Ivy-League affiliations of their kind in South Florida. Doctors and professors from Mount Sinai and Columbia University participate in Grand Rounds, which enhances the teaching experience for fellows, as well as share educational conferences. In addition to graduate medical education training, Mount Sinai also supports more than 560 students through its allied health professional and undergraduate medical programs, helping students prepare for a range of careers as future nurses, technicians, therapists and pharmacists, among others. ABOUT MOUNT SINAI MEDICAL CENTER Founded in 1949, Mount Sinai Medical Center is the largest independent, private, not-for-profit teaching hospital in South Florida. Mount Sinai's Centers of Excellence combine technology, research and academics to provide innovative and comprehensive care in Cardiology, Neurology, Oncology and Orthopaedics. One of only six statutory teaching hospitals in the state, Mount Sinai is the hospital of choice for those who seek the level of expertise and care that only a teaching hospital can offer. The medical center's commitment to quality has garnered prestigious recognition, including designation for five consecutive years as one of America's Top Hospitals for by U.S. News & World Report.

PATIENT TESTIMONIALS "After searching for a caring, compassionate, conscientious, and competent dentist I finally found Elite Dental Center. Not only has Dr. Ivan Pelton continually provided state of the art treatment but he responds promptly to emergency situations with phone calls as well as with follow-up appointments. Dr. Pelton is unique among dentists. He really cares about his patients, taking time to fully explain all the treatment procedures that are to be performed in an easily understandable way. If all dentists were like Dr. Pelton there would be no dental phobia in America an appreciably less visits to the dentist," says Hugh B. "Dr. Pelton is just great. A friend recommended him to me, and it took only one appointment for me to switch to him from my old dentist. He did an outstanding job filling a cavity my old dentist had done a terrible job on. And he did what's certainly the best cleaning job I've had in years. In all, he's extremely thorough, meticulous, careful, and knowledgeable. On top of that, he's a super nice guy -- funny and easy going (yet very professional). The staff is just as nice and helpful. I highly recommend him,” says Raul S. "Dr. Pelton is efficient and runs on time. I really appreciate that of him. I also don't have to wait a long time to get an appointment either. His staff is courteous and Dr.Pelton cares about patients and dentistry," says Patricia D.

toothpick between their teeth and those who flossed. If you prefer not to play with string, gently pump the tip of the toothpick between the teeth and push it until you hit resistance. Then repeat 8-10 times per space. Work from the cheek-side aspect and don't try the insides until you have mastered the cheek side entries. An electric toothbrush is superior to a manual toothbrush. Yes it is! You get far better cleaning than using a manual toothbrush. The best brands are Oral-B Triumph (cheaper replacement heads) and Sonicaire. Replace heads every 2-3months. Make sure you brush your tongue when you brush. Many of the bacteria that inhabit our teeth are on the tongue as well so brush them away and improve your breath in the process. Bleeding gums- get
to the dentist. You most likely have gum disease which for most is a painless disease. So basically, your jaw bone may be getting eaten away by bacteria and you won't feel pain in 90% of the cases.
It has been found that dental bacteria is gaining entry into our arteries and contributing to atherosclerosis or hardening of the arteries. Get your teeth cleaned regularly and often if needed.

TIPS AND TRICKS: Use baking soda toothpaste. Sounds simple and it is. Baking soda in a concentration of 55% or greater will kill oral bacteria. Brushing with it or buying toothpaste with baking soda will decrease gum bleeding and tartar deposits. Fluoride, on the other hand, is beneficial to the teeth by strengthening them and making them resistant to decay. We recommend GelKam (no prescrition needed) for an excellent product that has much more fluoride than regular toothpaste. Stronger products are available by prescription. Got canker sores, use Cankermelts. You can purchase Cankermelts from Amazon.com. Cankermelts are made from licorice root and does not require a prescription to purchase. Got cold sores, use Vyroxin. It is effective for herpes virus lesions on the lips and can be purchased on Amazon.com. No prescription necessary. Toothpicks used daily between teeth have been shown to be as effective as floss. Research shows no statistical difference between people who

Investing in the Utility Infrastructure
SPOTLIGHT ON HOLLYWOOD By Raelin Storey Public Affairs Director HOLLYWOOD - When a water or sewer main breaks it can cause damage and disrupt an essential service all of us count on. The City of Hollywoodʼs Department of Public Services provides water to approximately 143,000 permanent residents and 60,000 seasonal residents and visitors each year, covering roughly 27 square miles and producing over eight billion gallons of potable water annually. To maintain the high level of utility service our residents and businesses rely on, the Department of Public Services is engaged in an ongoing $203m Capital Improvement Program (CIP) geared to replace, renew and build essential utilities infrastructure and facilities to better service residents and businesses. The five year CIP was established in 2009 to ensure safe, reliable water and sewer services are available to all customers in City of Hollywoodʼs service areas and that water pollution control will continue to meet mandated State and Federal discharge standards. Hollywoodʼs water and sewer services require extensive capital investments to maintain and upgrade the existing system. The City of Hollywoodʼs CIP includes the evaluation, design, and construction management of water, wastewater, and infrastructure projects. It also demonstrates the Cityʼs commitment to greater water efficiency as water supplies become increasingly scarce. To promote water conservation the City offers several programs for residents. The Showerhead Exchange Installation of the new 60" Program is an ongoing, year-round conservation program. You can exchange your old showerhead at the Wastewater Treatment Plant on Taft Street or the Water Billing Office at City Hall during regular business McKinley Street sewer line. hours, Monday through Friday, between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. Bring in your old showerhead (pre-1994) and receive a new, low-flow showerhead absolutely free of charge. The Department also offers the Toilet Rebate Program. Qualified Hollywood residents can replace older toilets, which use an excessive amount of water, with new toilets that carry the WaterSense logo. These toilets are certified to use less water. Residential utility customers simply submit an application with proof of purchase for the new toilet and get a rebate of up to $100 per toilet. It is the cityʼs goal to continue to reach out to our utility customers and keep them informed. While we recognize there are always inconveniences that come with construction, please know we are trying to minimize these impacts as much as possible. For a comprehensive list of CIP projects, visit www.hollywoodfl.org. If you have specific questions about the showerhead exchange or toilet rebate programs, please call the City of Hollywood Department of Public Services project line at 954.921.3579, or e-mail h2oprogram@hollywoodfl.org.

They also extended their stays from Boston, Chicago and New York. Mitzi Goodman of Kendall brought her parents up to take part in something she attended last year. Even she was caught off guard with the amount of people who showed up and made this a night to remember. "Far exceeds what I remembered from last year," she explained. "My parents are 88 and 86 and both attend temple, but we don't have this kind of celebration. This is somewhat overwhelming to see this many people packed in here." As the Giant Menorah Lighting took place, many in attendance were introduced to the VIP guests, which I was so honored to be a part of, thanks to my longtime friend, Rabbi Tennenhaus. Represented on this evening was a delegation from the Broward County Sheriff's Office,
which included Mr. Alan Berkowitz, Sgt. Don Prichard and Sgt. Tomer Nader. Hollywood Mayor Peter Bober, Vice Mayor Anthony Sanders and Commissioner Alex Lewy came out once again from the host city of Hallandale Beach. Some of the others introduced were the COO of the Broward Jewish Federation, Bruce Yudewitz, who also took part in the Menorah lighting, as did the Consul General from Israel. Survivor Izzie Wolman joined in, along with media delegate Shelley Beneviste, a Jewish Press Columnist. Lighting the seven candles were community leaders Bernie Friedman, Jeff Rubenstein, David Schottenstein, Paul Sussman, Alon Ossip, the Mendal brothers, and Mr. Ronnie Cons. Musician Benny Friedman performed a live concert. His best-selling debut album “Taamu” was released in 2009 and has put him in high demand. Local youth talent and award-winner Yisroel Amar also was
impressive, and had that hometown crowd behind his every note. Nosson Zand, the Twin Chassidic acrobats from France and the Yossi Bayles Orchestra were also very good. The event was produced and directed by Chabad of South Broward, leaders of Jewish education, outreach and social services. Over 40 sponsors helped make the mega Chanukah event the success it was, along with Shluchim and staff members Rabbi Moshe Schwartz, Rabbi Levi Tennenhaus, Rabbi Mordy Feiner, Aaron Kaufman, Adele Fisher, Yossy Kudan, and Margaret Schor. The Chaya Aydel Seminary distributed Chanukah Gelt, Dreidels and Chocolate gelt to two thousand young boys and girls. Chabad.org broadcast the event live around the world, with tens of thousands tuning in on every continent, for a Chanukah experience that will last a lifetime.
GULFSTREAM PARK One of the event sponsors/partners is Jacob's Classic Market, which has turned into one of the centerpieces of this impressive racing/casino and shopping facilities. While Jacob's was easily one of the busiest places on Sunday, Christmas Day, Monday night watched hundreds and hundreds of festival goers pack this market that was selling pizza, prepared foods and soups as well as other snack items that were a very popular walkaround food. As I walked out of Gulfstream Park on Monday night, watching the line of cars extend off the property, there was no doubt that this was one of the premier events in this community, and while large crowds at Gulfstream
remind many of the fabled Florida Derby, this gathering on Monday

Broward Stage Door Theatre presents the beloved multiple Tony Award winning musical ʻGuys & Dollsʼ
SPOTLIGHT ON STAGE
Based on Damon Runyon's short story "The Idyll of Miss Sarah Brown," "Guys & Dolls," revolves around Nathan Detroit, the organizer of the oldest established permanent floating crap game in New York, who bets fellow gambler Sky Masterson that he can make the next girl he sees fall in love with him. The next girl he sees happens to be Miss Sarah Brown, a pureat-heart Salvation Army-type reformer and the stage is set for a hilarious evening of complications. It all begins when Nathan Detroit and high-rolling gambler Sky Masterson cannot
PAUL ANKA
persuade Save-ASoul Sister Sarah Brown to accompany him on a trip to Cuba. While the wordily Sky works his charms on Sarah, Nathan is doing his best to stay outside the matrimonial clutches of his long-suffering fiancée, Miss Adelaide. "Guys & Dolls" is a fable about what happens to gambling men and the women who long to tame them. Set in the colorful world of New York City in the mid 20th century, the romantic and funny "Guys & Dolls" is pop-
ulated with gangsters and gamblers, missionary dolls and scantily clad showgirls and one of the great musical scores in the history of American theatre. See this all time favorite musical at the newest Byron Carlyle Theatre located at 500 71st Street, Miami Beach, now on stage through January 8, 2012. Performances are Thursday, Friday and Saturday at 8 p.m. Matinees are Saturday and Sunday at 2 p.m. Tickets are $38. For information,

INSIDE: HEALTH • REAL ESTATE
THE RAVEN TEAM AT SUE WARD HOMES
thing they may not know…itʼs customary, on a Short Sale, for the lender to pay the realtors fees from the Short Sale proceeds, putting no additional costs upon the seller. For all these years, it has been unnatural for a seller to lose money on their property. Not one person I have dealt with ever said they would be happy with a $50,000 loss. However, the mind set is changing now. Sellers are sometimes better off with a $50,000 loss than a $600,000 mortgage debt.”
A few words to describe The Raven Team and how they treat their clients ʻWhen you talk, we listen!ʼ
Norman Raven and Debbie Finke have worked as a team now for more than 14 years in the South Florida area.
Norman Raven and Debbie Finke have worked as a team now for more than 15 years in the South Florida area. The Sue Ward Homes Family team is “hand picked” from the highest professionals in the real estate business offering many years of real estate knowledge, in every type of market.
Norman Raven and Debbie Finke of Sue Ward Homes, specialize in residential purchases, sales, short sales, and long-term and seasonal rentals. The dynamic duo are professional Real Estate advisors who have worked together as a team for more than 15 years in the South Florida area. They represent properties in Hollywood, Hallandale, Aventura, Sunny Isles, and Fort Lauderdale targeting all economic sectors of the market. Debbie and Norman see the market as buoyant and homes are moving faster than they have seen in the last three years. “In fact, says Debbie, we just sold a highly up-graded 2/2 penthouse on Hollywood Beach for almost a half-million dollars, after receiving many offers.” EXPERIENCE PAYS OFF Norman Raven has 42 years of realtor experience. He stresses, “We provide old-fashioned service with a cutting-edge advantage in modern technology. We
truly care about our clients and treat them with honesty and respect. Our clientsʼ interests always come first.” Raven added, “Many agents will try to sell you anything available on the market and will push just any property on a buyer, but that is not what we do. The Raven Teamʼs philosophy is about integrity and old-fashioned standards. Sometimes a situation arises when we suggest a client not go forward with the transaction, because it might not be what they truly wanted or the parties involved are making it too complicated. I would rather lose a sale and start fresh only to keep my client happy. Real estate is about nurturing, educating, coordinating, transacting and ultimately closing, resulting in happy clients.” HONESTY WINS OUT Debbie Finke adds, “My goal is to always be up-front and honest with my clients. I listen and wait for them to open up and talk to me about what they really want in a purchase or in selling their home. My style is

casual, aggressive, but never pushy. I am always working to protect my client with truthful information.”
A HOT BUYER’S MARKET “Itʼs a buyerʼs market today. Interest rates are still at an all-time low,” Debbie pointed out. “Now is the time to buy. However, we are still living in challenging economic times and obtaining a mortgage from a bank is not an easy feat. It becomes easier via our mortgage consultants. The biggest obstacle is still qualifying for the mortgage. A buyer has to have a really clean record today. Along with facilitating short sales and foreclosures, we provide very smooth and constant communication to and from lenders and banks. We are willing to do whatever it takes to open this dialogue, and keep the communication lines open. We excel in going the extra mile for our clients.” Homeowners are having to face reality. One of the questions we are apt to get is…”I could have sold this property
for $1,000,000 in 2007! Should I sell now via Short Sale with my lender?” “There are quite a few homeowners still dreaming and they simply do not want to hear the truth. The sad truth is…We canʼt focus on the market as it was five or six years ago when the market peaked. There are times when the buyer is brought to the sellerʼs property with an offer but the seller turns it down, hoping to hold out for more. A few months go by, and the property value may have dropped even more. Itʼs time for a reality check!” Debbie continues, “There is no use crying over spilled milk, but it does happen. Thatʼs when your next decision as a seller should be made. A

seller with a very high mortgage has to contemplate whether to Short Sale the property or attempt to negotiate a loan modification with their lender. We will gladly act for any seller, free of charge, to negotiate with their lender for a Short Sale which may result in the seller having less stress and placing the seller in a slightly stronger personal financial position. It gives the sellers the breathing space they need to move forward with their lives. Another
SOUTH FLORIDA IS STILL THE ATTRACTION South Florida has an especially fluid market. Drawn by the warm climate and beautiful beaches, families are constantly moving here as well as retirees. They move closer to their jobs or closer to the beach, out-grow their present home, or want to take advantage of the buyerʼs market to invest in real estate while the prices are low and the interest rates at rock bottom. Real Estate is still the consumerʼs best investment in the long term. There are no shortages of incredible bargains on the market. And sellers,The Raven Team will keep your property active through their proven marketing and advertising processes. Now is the time to call the Raven Team to buy or sell your home. All of us would like to live near the beach, but thereʼs only so much beach property available. The Raven Team, part of the Sue Ward Homes Family offering many years of real estate knowledge, in every type of market, specializes in beach property and stands ready to represent you, whether you are the buyer or seller. WE SPEAK YOUR LANGUAGE The Raven Team is here for you with offices in Southeast Florida, Myrtle Beach, South Carolina and London, UK, England. Agents speak English, British English, Spanish, French Canadian, German, Italian, Russian, Hebrew and Portuguese, reflecting the companyʼs international market right here in South Florida.

(NewsUSA) - The rigors of appearing on the reality TV show The Biggest Loser led Lisa Mosley to the emotional breakthrough that empowered her to lose almost 100 pounds. But it was portion control that kept her losing weight when she returned home from the set. "I live on the motto "Moderation not deprivation," she says. "As soon as I got home from the ranch, I started using a small plate instead of big dinner plates. It has been extremely successful for me." Mosley didn't start gaining weight until she was about 20, when she began taking medication for a chronic anxiety disorder. The medication made her feel like a new person, but within six months she began to gain weight. Over the next 10 years she gained about 120 pounds. By 2010, Lisa had suffered several personal setbacks. She had been laid off from her job, had lost her home and had no prospects to find

work. The defining moment in her struggle to lose weight came when she discovered that her daughter had stopped eating and drinking because she didn't want to be heavy like her mom. That spurred Lisa to take action, including her willingness to bare her soul on The Biggest Loser. When Lisa left the show, she had dropped 60 pounds. But she continued to lose weight, dropping another 37 pounds at home after she learned to control the size of her portions. She recently became the national spokeswoman for Yum Yum Dishes, sets of handpainted 4-ounce ceramic bowls. Tracy Adler, mother of two and former restaurant
owner, created the bowls to help parents and kids control the size of their snacks. "The idea for these dishes is what got me through this," Mosley says. "A lot of times when I have entered into diets in the past, I went into it thinking I am never going to get a cookie, ice cream, or a piece of cake again. I was never successful with that," she adds. "These dishes remind you that your life isn't over and you are not going to be missing out." Today Mosley works as a fitness boot camp instructor and personal trainer. She weighs about 190 pounds, wears a size 12 and is happy with herself. "I am literally a different person," she
So, you're finally eating the right kind of foods. You're religously taking your medications, and even exercising 4-5 days per week.. You are determined to lower your cholesterol, and you are at last, doing something about it... But did you know that studies, as far back as 1937, have linked low cholesterol with with depressed mood and suicide, especially in males over 70. Although some of the past research has reported mixed results, more recent studies suggest that the variables of gender and age are significantly correlated with depression and cholesterol. A recent French study concluded that depression in woman (age 65 and over) correlates with low levels of high density lipoprotein, (the good form of cholesterol), but men have a greater risk of depression when having low levels of "low density lipoprotein".(the bad type of cholesterol).... Also it was suggested in this study, that in males, the metabolism of the neurotransmitter "serotonin" may be genetically linked to the same low density lipoproteins. Digesting this information can be a bit tricky, especially because direct “causation” cannot be established from the research. (ie.., it may be just as possible that depression causes low cholesterol, rather than low cholesterol causes depression)... So think twice before you start stocking on extra fat salami and New York style cheesecake. For seniors with cholesterol problems and depression issues, keep close monitoring on your cholesterol count, and visit a doctor who knows about this issue, and will best regulate your high and low lipoproteins to optimum levels. HOLIDAY COOKING FIRE SAFETY TIPS
The Holidays are a time when family and friends get together over a good old fashioned home cooked meal. The Holidays are also a time
when cooking fires are more likely to happen. NFPA studies show cooking fires to be the number one cause of home fires and home fire
City Offices Closed for the Holidays Hallandale Beach City Offices will be closed on Monday, January 2nd. Happy New Year!
Free Christmas Tree Curbside Pick-up
The City of Hallandale Beach will be doing a free Christmas tree curbside collection service for all residents of the city. The service will star Thursday January 05, 2012 and continue every Thursday until February 24, 2012. To have your tree picked up you need to remove all the ornaments and the base and set it on the curb.
injuries. This holiday be fire safe by following some simple tips: When cooking always stay within FULL view of the cooking appliance. NEVER cook under the influence of alcohol, medications that cause drowsiness, or if you are feeling sleepy. Create a safety zone while cooking by keeping kids and guests at least 3 feet away from cooking appliances while in use. WHEN USING A DEEP FRYER: • Place the fryer in an open area away from all walls, fences, or other structures. • Always keep at least a 2 foot space between the fryer and propane tank. • Completely thaw (USDA recommends 24 hours per 4-5 pounds) and dry turkey.
Hallandale Beach Fire Rescue has some important rules for all to follow
• If a fire occurs, IMMEDIATELY call 911. Do NOT use water on a grease/oil fire. Make sure your smoke alarms are working properly, and NEVER disable or borrow a battery from a smoke alarm. Hallandale Beach Fire Rescue is working hard to help make your holiday a happy, fun and most of all safe occasion.
• Follow manufacturerʼs instructions to determine
the proper amount of oil to add.
For year round safety information visit our webpage regularly at www.hallandalebeachfl.gov.
After February 24, 2012, trees can be dropped off on Saturdays between the hours of 8:00 AM to 12:00 PM. Location for drop off is 630 NW 3rd Street. Proof of residency will be required. Please contact the Sanitation Division at 954-457-1616 with any questions.
Fire Hydrant Flushing
Hallandale Beach Fire Rescue will continue flushing Fire Hydrants in the Southwest section of the City through December. Then, work will begin in the Northeast section of the City in January. This process is necessary to ensure, for your safety, there is adequate water pressure and flow in the event of a fire. Flushing the hydrants may temporarily cause an orange tint to your water. This in no way indicates any contamination of the water but may cause discoloration in your wash and is only a temporary condition. During this period, please open your faucets and check for discolored water. Should the water continue to run discoloration longer than five to ten minutes please contact the Water Department at (954) 457-1632.

Try sweet potatoes for a healthy, flavorful addition to your dinners
(ARA) - The dinner table is a favorite gathering place for many American families. Sharing an evening meal is a tradition because it gives all members a chance to connect, share stories, discuss and enjoy a bit of socializing before everyone dashes off to their next event. Creating menus to keep everyone interested in making it home for the evening meal can be a challenge, especially if you've been preparing dinner for many years. And with more and more people looking for healthy meals - especially with all the holiday temptations - you may be looking for new options to serve your family. One versatile ingredient that you can serve as a side dish, use to decorate fresh green salads or provide unique flavor for breads, is the sweet potato. Grown in the United States, raw sweet potatoes are fat and cholesterol free, and contain a wide variety of nutrients including: vitamins A, B6, C, E and K, folate, fiber and potas-
fork. Bake at 400 F in the oven for 40 to 50 minutes or for four to six minutes in the microwave, turning halfway through the cooking time. * Saute 1/4- to 1/2-inch thick slices or 1-inch cubes of sweet potatoes in 2 tablespoons butter or oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Stir frequently. * For salads, peel and cut the sweet potatoes into sticks and serve with your favorite dip or grate and toss in a salad. To prevent them from turning brown, immediately rinse them in cold water, and store in ice water or a plastic bag with ice until serving. If you're looking for new menus to serve for your family dinners, and want to make sure they're healthy and nutritious, check out what sweet potatoes can bring to your dinners. Visit the United States Sweet Potato Council's site, www.sweetpotatousa.org for more information.
sium. During the winter months you can use sweet potatoes to nutritionally enhance the comfort foods your family craves like the following soup recipe:
SWEET POTATO COUNTRY SOUP 1/4 cup olive oil 4 cups chopped onion 1/4 cup minced garlic 4 cups fresh sweet potatoes, washed and cubed 2 quarts chicken broth 2 bay leaves 4 teaspoons paprika 2 teaspoons ground turmeric 2 tablespoons dried basil leaves 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1/4 teaspoon ground red pepper 2 cups peeled and chopped tomatoes 1 1/2 cups chopped sweet green peppers 4 cups cooked or canned garbanzo beans 2 1/2 tablespoons light soy sauce 1/4 cup fresh lemon juice 3 cups grated Parmesan cheese; for gar-
nish
In a large saucepot, heat oil; saute onion and garlic for five minutes. Add celery, sweet potatoes, chicken broth and spices. Bring to boil; cover and simmer 15 minutes. Stir in tomatoes, green pepper and garbanzo beans; simmer 15 minutes longer. Carefully, in small batches, use a food processor or blender and process until smooth. Stir in soy sauce and lemon juice; heat through. Ladle 1 cup into each individual
soup bowl and sprinkle with 1/4 cup Parmesan cheese. And since sweet potatoes are available all year long, consider adding this sausage ball recipe as a great meat and veggie addition to dinners served both in winter and summer: SWEET POTATO SAUSAGE BALLS 3 cups Bisquick 1 cup sharp cheddar cheese, shredded 1 pound sausage 1 1/2 cups cooked, mashed sweet pota-
toes
Combine all ingredients well. Roll into balls and place on greased sheet pan. Bake at 350 F. for 20 minutes, until brown. The United States Sweet Potato Council offers these suggestions for serving sweet potatoes throughout the year: * Scrub the skin, trim the ends and cut out bruised spots with a stainless steel knife. * For baking in the oven or microwave, prick the skin several times with a
