3 Strategies For Living A Life That Makes A Difference In 2017 John C. Neyland, author of How to Live the Life You’ve Yet to Dream

It’s common for people to think about putting their mark on the world and leaving it a better place than when they arrived.

But in many cases people fail to put those thoughts into action – possibly because they’re hesitant to step outside their comfort zones.

“Too often we’re taught to be fearful and that hampers the actions we take and the decisions we make,” says John C. Neyland, author of How to Live the Life You’ve Yet to Dream (www.johnneyland.com).

“We need to be taught to be courageous.”

He experienced his own challenges growing up, suffering the wrath of an abu-

sive father and trying to overcome obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) that left him burdened by stress.

“I know what it’s like to need help and not have it,” Neyland says. “But that has given me the impetus to want to help and make a difference in the lives of others – whether those others are family members or strangers.”

And there’s no time like the present to begin, he says. As people make their resolutions for the New Year, he suggests a good place to start for having a positive impact on family and others is to vow to: • Be the kind of spouse you would like to

have. Neyland grew up watching his father abuse his mother and he vowed things would be different for him. “If I accomplish every goal I have in life but if I don’t treat my wife the way I should, then for me my life would have no purpose,” Neyland says. He suggests an unusual benchmark – eulogies – for setting the standard for how you treat your spouse.

People usually speak with great respect of the deceased in eulogies, Neyland says, but why wait until then to show someone how much you honor them? “Why not treat your loved ones as if you honor them every day?”

• Be the kind of parent you would have liked to have had. Think back on your childhood and consider what your parents did right and what they did wrong.

You can learn from both. Everyone understands the value of loving parents who invest time in their children and set a good example. “There have been times I haven’t measured up,” Neyland says, “but I truly give it my all.”

• Enable others to have a life they otherwise would not have had. Human

nature often causes us to think about ourselves. But to live better lives, we also need to think about others, Neyland says.

He has made it a mission to help underprivileged young people improve their lives. “When you help that one person, good things can result,” Neyland says.

“Imagine if the person you helped also is inspired to help someone else. And that person helps someone else, and so on.”

“The value of our lives is measured by how we leave others in our wake, whether it’s our spouses, our children or the person down the street,” Neyland says. “Plan on helping someone, somewhere or somehow on a regular basis. If you do this and do it earnestly, you’ll be surprised at what it does for your own life.”

BLACK STRING From South Korea Makes U.S. Debut at the Aventura Arts & Cultural Center On Friday, January 13 at 8 p.m. Jazz Academy Miami (JAM) will present the U.S. debut of contemporary ensemble BLACK STRING at Aventura Arts & Cultural Center.

Rooted in the rich, folkloric traditions of Korea, as well as in modern Jazz, this exciting quartet creates a unique language that is traditional yet unpredictable. As a truly borderless contemporary ensemble, BLACK STRING broadens the appreciation for world music by presenting an ancient tradition within a modern setting.

The Washington Post wrote, “This is music fully of the 21st century, in all its global, postmodernist glory.”

The evening of music is presented as part of the Arts Access Program, which assists community-based organizations in presenting arts and cultural performances at Aventura Arts & Cultural Center. Overcoming a life filled with eye problems

Growing up in West Palm Beach, Dr. Martha Jacobson remembers a childhood that was not the easiest for her.

Born with amblyopia, Dr. Jacobson’s early years came with an emotional scar of having to wear eye patches, use drops and deal with 20/200 vision and the ridicule of her peers in school.

Amblyopia is the medical term used when the vision in one of the eyes is reduced because the eye and the brain are not working together properly. The eye itself looks normal, but it is not being used normally because the brain is favoring the other eye. This condition is also sometimes called lazy eye.

Because her father was an optometrist, and was always there for support and to provide knowledge, it didn’t make it any easier that she was getting bullied in school, but it did provide the information and understanding of the disease.

“Things were rough,” the 71-year-old psychologist pointed out. “I never knew anything but poor vision in that one eye while having perfect vision in the other. It was the way I went through life.”

Dr. Jacobson’s father felt that wearing a patch would eventually allow the weak eye to get stronger. That has long been the thinking when treating the disease.

As the years moved on, Dr. Jacobson always had in the back of her mind that the one good eye was the only link to her sight. While it was scary, it was indeed a reality.

It wasn’t until the last year, after developing cataracts in both eyes that Dr. Jacobson began to start to worry about losing sight. It was something that her Hollywood Optometrist Dr. Justine Chen was concerned with as well. Initially sending her to one ophthalmologist and then finally to the person that helped to change her life.

“When I found out that I needed the procedure done, you think about it and then say, wow, that is my only good eye,” she recalled. “You are really apprehensive because that one eye is all you really have.”

When Dr. Jacobson went to her first appointment, it was a huge turnoff to wait three hours and actually something that she feared. It was an assembly line doctor with no personal touch, and being around the profession all of her life, with her father, she knew there had to be a better experience waiting.

“My sister had the cataract surgery and suggested someone else to go see,” Dr. Jacobson explained. “That was when everything changed.”

From the first visit to the Braverman Eye Center in Hallandale Beach, she was sold. The professional manner in which the staff took care of her - to the consultation with Dr. Stanley Braverman, this was something that was getting a lot more comfortable.

Not only was the cataract surgery with Multifocal lenses going to be performed on her good eye, but she was going to have it done on the other eye as well.

“Dr. Braverman sat me down and went over everything - and when I had questions, he was there with the answers,” Dr. Jacobson pointed out. “He knew exactly what was going through my mind - with the good eye and being apprehensive about the surgery.”

Performed in September, Dr. Jacobson is still working and doing what she’s done all of her adult life. But now, with vision that she never thought would be this great, she is living life and seeing everything clearly - in both eyes.

Said Dr. Braverman, “Her father did a great job treating her amblyopia! After surgery, she recovered 20/30 uncorrected vision in the right amblyopic eye, and 20/ 25 uncorrected vision in her left eye. With multifocal implants that I used, she sees 20/20 to read without glasses!”

What Are Cataracts?

A cataract is formed when the natural lens of the eye, responsible for focusing light and producing sharp images, becomes cloudy and hardens, resulting in a loss of visual function. The lens of the eye is clear at birth but is one of the first parts of the body to show the effects of aging. A cataract is painless and usually develops gradually over several months or years. The onset of a cataract in one or both eyes may cause decreased night vision, impaired depth perception, and increased color distortion.

Cataracts are the leading cause of vision loss among adults age 55 and older.

In fact, poor vision from cataracts affects 60 percent of all adults over age 60.

However, cataracts also can result from injury, heredity, or medications, so they can affect people of all ages.

CITY NEWS Lessons Learned In Hiring A Private Aide By the daughter of an Aventura mom

Finally, I found the perfect person to look after mom, who could no longer live alone safely. Marie, the aide, was referred by another aide in mom’s building, who seemed to take great care of a very demanding neighbor who was showing signs of confusion like my mother. During the interview process, Marie demonstrated patience, attentiveness to mom’s needs, and had glowing references. I even called two of them, who were out of state, but who affirmed how good Marie was to them or their family member. What a relief! After three weeks in Florida, I finally was able to return to my family in Ohio and feel that mom was in good hands.

At first, all was fabulous. Mom said Marie helped her with showering, picking out her clothes, made small meals, and they went to dinner a lot. Mom also said Marie helped her clean out her drawers and closets, and helped her organize her things.

Then, mom began to complain that Marie moves things around, and mom cannot find them. She told Marie to keep things in one place, and that Marie raised her voice to her. I spoke to Marie, who

said mom moves things around herself, and then cannot find them. I suggested that since mom can get confused, it might be best to organize things the way it would be easier for her. The next day, mom called and said her diamond ring and earrings were missing, and the $400 spare money that she has kept in the corner of her bedside table for years was also missing. I asked to speak to Marie. Mom informed me that Marie went down to the store and had not yet returned.

When I called back later, mom said Marie still had not returned and she did not know what she should do for dinner. I called Security in mom’s building. They had not seen the aide since she left in the morning. I asked them to check on mom.

Feeling upset myself, I called another neighbor, asking if she could either include my mother in her dinner plans or help mom order delivery from a local restaurant, and then see to it that she had something for breakfast in the morning. I called the Aventura police to report a possible theft, and booked an early morning flight back to Florida.

What an ordeal followed. However, at least mom was not physically harmed!

an agency due to a slightly higher cost, I began a rapid search of getting competent help as soon as possible, calling mom’s doctors and going online. The name Always Classic Care came up several times. When I called, the staff was most professional asking about mom’s status and needs. The owner, Terry Adler, joined the conversation with more specific questions about mom’s personality and capability status, as well as my concerns and services I felt mom would need. Terry advised me that she and her staff would confer immediately to select the most suitable aide, and that she would personally supervise the case. To my surprise, once paperwork was completed with staff, Terry called me back to report she had someone very special for mom who could start later that evening or first thing in the morning. I was amazed. Well, mom hit it off with the new aide immediately, and she has now been with mom for the over a year. It definitely was a great match.

Although I had avoided going through an agency because of the slightly higher cost, it took a bad experience for me to realize the many advantages of using a home health agency or nurse registry.

Aside from dealing with professionals, home health agencies are regulated by the State of Florida. All of their healthcare

workers must submit to a rigorous screening process that includes FBI fingerprinting for any history of wrong doing. 5 Tips For Success That Nobel Laureates Can Teach Us

The scientists, artists and peacemakers who win the Nobel Prize every year are as diverse as the work that ultimately brings them to the world’s attention.

That makes it a daunting task to try to glean any secrets they might have for reaching the pinnacle of achievement.

“Their personalities and paths to accomplishment are so varied that generalizations are elusive,” says David Pratt, author of “Nobel Laureates: The Secret of Their Success” (www.davidpratt.ca).

Though the typical laureate is from a professional or academic family, and grew up in the rela-

tive privilege of the middle class, that profile doesn’t hold true for all.

Some spent their childhood in absolute poverty, in poor health or were on their own from an early age. Others were eccentric loners or late-bloomers.

But even if their backgrounds aren’t that revealing, Pratt says, there are lessons to be learned from how they pushed and challenged themselves. He says ways to emulate them include: • Seek out good teachers/mentors. The advantages of being

born into an academic family are obvious, Pratt says. Family friends and relatives provide intellectual stimulation and emphasize scholarship and achievement. But laureates also cite the value of finding a good mentor along the way – a teacher, boss or patron who generously cleared the path to success and gently (or not so gently) prodded them down it.

• Be a teacher/mentor yourself.

“There is no better way of getting a good grasp of your subject, or one more likely to start more ideas for research, than teaching it,” said Daniel Tsui, who won the prize in physics in 1998. Pratt says many laureates, including novelist Toni Morrison, take their teaching as seriously as their award-winning work, because it allows them to share their passion with others and keeps the fire burning.

• Persevere. Pratt notes that President Jimmy Carter, who won the Peace Prize in 2002, was

the first American politician to be awarded for work undertaken after his presidency. Though he failed to win a second term, and many of his policies were reversed during the Reagan administration, Carter was determined to keep working on the causes that were dear to him.

Groundbreakers have to be prepared for push-back, Pratt says.

“Great discoveries are rarely made by people who are averse to risks.”

• Be ready to be lucky. Many laureates have spoken of the role luck played in their discoveries and successes. Some do it with humor, some with humility. But always there is the understanding that, to be lucky, you have to recognize what you have when you see it. “As Louis Pasteur said, ‘Fortune favors the prepared mind,’ ” Pratt says.

• Be passionate about what you do. Again and again, the laureates show that zeal is the key to achievement, Pratt says. They

work very hard. They take many risks. But their work is their joy.

That final characteristic may be the most important.

That passion for their work comes close to obsession, Pratt says. It leads to a level of industry that’s extraordinary, a near-total immersion in their field of endeavor and a dedication that makes their work supremely fulfilling. That may be the true secret of their success.

A hearty holiday meal is a special blessing for families of all sizes and circumstances, and a relatively meager donation can make a big difference for numerous families in need.

Give Items: You may not realize it, but there is actually value to the unwanted items you have laying around.

Items like automobiles, furniture, household goods and clothing can be donated and converted into cash to

benefit charities. Larger items can be picked up at the curb and are often sold at auction with the proceeds going back to the charitable organization. Smaller items may go directly to retail facilities, such as thrift stores, where sales also go to benefit the charity. La Navidad fue suspendida en Cuba desde los primeros años de la década de 1960 y eliminada oficialmente del calendario a partir de 1970. Posteriormente, en 1997, como preparación a la visita del Papa Juan Pablo II, el gobierno permitió una pequeña apertura religiosa.

“La gente muy religiosa nunca dejó de celebrar, a veces de manera oculta, la Navidad.

Ahora ya la celebración es imparable. Las iglesias se repletan y los que tienen dólares pueden comprar arbolitos y comestibles”, dijo María López, durante un viaje para visitar a su madre en La Habana.

La Navidad en el Mundo Latino en su carticas. Posiblemente Santa Claus reciba escasa correspondencia de España y de la América al sur del Río Grande.

Alegría desbordante y profunda fe religiosa. Son famosas sus posadas, que comienzan nueve días antes de Navidad y representan el peregrinaje de José y María buscando una posada en la que ella pueda alumbrar a su hijo.

Se trata de grupos más o menos grandes, en procesiones iluminadas con velas y precedidas por niños que llevan un nacimiento de barro cocido.

Pueden visitar uno o más hogares y siempre cantan unos versos a nombre de José pidiendo posada. Los de la casa responden que no hay y, después de la “conversación” cantada entre los “peregrinos” y los “posaderos”, finalmente éstos abren la puerta y les ofrecen tamales, atole de chocolate (bebida caliente a base de harina de maíz y sabor de chocolate) y otras golosinas. Los niños reciben siempre dulces y regalitos previamente colocados en una piñata.

Como son diferentes grupos visitando distintos hogares, las calles resuenan con la alegría contagiosa de un jolgorio de carnaval. El día de Navidad se celebra una misa solemne y los festejos continúan hasta la Epifanía, cuando los tres Reyes Magos pasan en el silencio de la noche dejando regalos para los niños.

Las primeras tradiciones traídas de España al Nuevo Mundo fueron castizas, pero más tarde se acriollaron y cada región las revistió con su propio sabor local. Sin embargo, las devociones religiosas, los cantos, las oraciones en honor de la Sagrada Familia, continúan festejando el milagro de Belén.

A pesar de la influencia de Estados Unidos a través de la televisión que llega a Hispanoamérica, en sus naciones la mayor parte de los niños aún esperan ilusionados que los Reyes Magos les traigan los regalos que ellos les pidieron

LIFESTYLES Turn Holiday Gatherings Into A Family-History Research Project The holiday season represents the perfect opportunity for anyone who’s been thinking of taking a deep dive into their family history.

All those grandparents, aunts,

uncles and cousins gathering to feast on turkey or exchange gifts possess a treasure trove of genealogical information and family stories.

All you need to do is ask – and perhaps turn on a recording device – and soon you may be learning about great-great grandfather’s treacherous journey across the Atlantic or Uncle

Phil’s courageous actions during World War II. “Interviewing family members is one of the best places to start when you want to learn about or write about your family’s story,” says Ceil Lucas, a sociolinguist, amateur genealogist and author of How I Got Here: A Memoir.

“Older relatives especially may have wonderful tales from decades ago involving people you never heard about. If you’re lucky, you may even learn that they have stashed away somewhere letters, diaries or photographs that belonged to those long dead ancestors.”

But be warned, Lucas says.

While people dream about learning they descended from royalty or happen to be distantly related to Benjamin Franklin, genealogi-

cal research is just as likely to turn up horse thieves, drifters and scandals of every sort.

“You’re going to find stuff you might not want to know,” Lucas says. “But who knows, those might be your most fascinating finds.”

Lucas began working on her family history three decades ago, about the same time she began making notes on what would become a memoir of her childhood in Guatemala City and Rome, Italy. This upbringing left her with a sense of “I’m not from here” – “here” being the U.S., where she was born.

But her genealogical research, which revealed her first ancestors coming to the U.S. from Scotland in 1654 and England in 1679, showed her just how “from here” she is. Lucas realized that the stories of her ancestors needed to be included in her memoir and the result was a genealogical memoir.

“The thing is, once the genea-

logical story is learned, it simply can’t be unlearned,” she says.

Interviewing relatives between sips of eggnog is just the beginning. Lucas has other suggestions for those who want to explore their family histories: • Check census records. Every 10 years since 1790 the census has taken a snapshot of who’s living in the United States. Valuable information can be found in census records, and you might even discover relatives you never heard about.

• Sign up for a genealogy class.

Many community colleges offer non-credit courses in genealogy that will help you understand how to research your family and interpret what you find.

• Consider DNA testing. People often think they know their ethnic lineage, but discover surprises when they have a DNA test. Lucas’ DNA test revealed that she is descended not only

from people who hailed from England and Scotland, but also the Iberian Peninsula.

“It also probably doesn’t hurt if you are a nerd about these things like me,” Lucas says. “I found an ancestor who was involved in the Oklahoma Land Rush, so I researched that and found newspaper articles about the land rush. I think it’s important to put your family story in the historical context, especially if you plan to write a memoir.”

You can see it when you drive around your neighborhood. On a visit to the Aventura Mall - or just about everywhere you go these days. The holiday season is certainly in the air.

Over the next few weeks, we will see more commercials for this holiday season that lasts right up until Chanukah and ends at the end of the calendar year.

Aventura comes alive this time of year as throngs of visitors pour into neighboring Hallandale Beach for the casinos and racing as well as the beaches which are getting crowded.

High-Tech Habits Linked to Dry Eye Disease - Are You at Risk?

(BPT) - Nearly nine in 10 (89 percent) of eye care professionals (ECPs) who participated in the National Eye C.A.R.E. (Current Attitudes Related to Eye Health) Survey believe our modern, multi-screen lifestyle (i.e., everyday use of mobile, tablet and computer screens) is partly responsible for an increase in dry eye disease (DED). The survey was conducted online by Harris Poll in July 2015 on behalf of Shire. The survey included more than 1,000 ECPs (optometrists and ophthalmologists) and more than 1,200 adults with dry eye symptoms (U.S. adults diagnosed with dry eye disease or experiencing dry eye symptoms who have used artificial tears in the past month). While women ages 50 and older are still most likely to be affected by DED, ECPs surveyed also report that use of modern technology is changing the face of the condition, saying that they are seeing an increased number of younger patients aged 18-34 with dry eye symptoms now vs. 10 years ago (76 percent).

“Many adults aren’t familiar with key symptoms of DED and wait years between symptom onset and seeking medical advice,” explained Marguerite McDonald,

MD, FACS, board-certified ophthalmologist, Ophthalmic Consultants of Long Island. “It’s important that all adults talk to an ECP right away if they notice changes in their eyes. While age and female gender continue to be significant risk factors for DED, our screendependent lifestyle has led to a noticeable shift, with more young adults presenting with dry eye symptoms than in years past.”

The disease is commonly associated with dryness and overall eye discomfort, as well as stinging, burning, a gritty feeling or episodes of blurred vision. Based on the survey results, adults with dry eye symptoms (64 percent) rank sight as the sense that’s most important to them, yet most (55 percent) say that they did not give much thought to their eye care until they started experiencing dry eye symptoms. Adults with dry eye symptoms who participated in the survey said they typically waited two years between symptom onset and seeking medical advice. This may be because about half (49 percent) dismiss them as a normal part of aging, and approximately one in three (32 percent) don’t understand that there is a potential risk for long-term damage to their eyes. But,

nearly three in five (57 percent) say they wish they had spoken to an ECP sooner.

More possible impacts: Adults with dry eye symptoms who participated in the survey said dry eye symptoms impact them in various ways throughout their day. Specifically, most people with dry eye symptoms surveyed say that those symptoms impact their ability to spend time in front of a screen (75 percent), participate in hobbies (68 percent), and work (54 percent) - and many say that symptoms cause annoyance (57 percent), fatigue (46 percent), and/or frustration (42 percent). In addition, 43 percent say their dry eye symptoms often keep them from what they want to be doing.

In fact, obesity rates in the US are dramatically higher than they were 30 years ago, making obesity a growing public health concern. For example, you may think you’re going to score points for showing up at work despite feeling under the weather. However, if you were to run this by an etiquette expert like Diane Gottsman, she would probably tell you the reverse is true.

“A recent survey found that half of Americans feel anxious about getting sick when others cough around them,” Gottsman says. “So when you cough, your coworkers are likely going to be thinking of themselves and may not sympathize with you.”

That’s why Gottsman says the best thing you can do is steer clear of the

Touch no one: If a friend moves in for a hug or a handshake, kindly warn them that you are recovering from a cold and would prefer to “play it safe” before extending your hand or leaning in for a hug.

Keep a sickness arsenal: Keep your desk well stocked to help you treat your symptoms and keep common areas germfree. For your kit, consider items like tissues, disinfecting wipes and hand sanitizer, as well as relief for sick symptoms, like

pain relievers and a cough syrup like Robitussin.

Avoid shared surfaces: Cold viruses can survive several hours on surfaces, transferring easily to your colleagues.

Germs can be hard to contain and avoid, but you can do your part by wiping down shared areas like a table or chair with a disinfecting wipe when you are finished using them.

Cover your mouth wisely: Coughs and sneezes give germs and viruses a nice little vehicle to get around and infect others nearby. When you must cough or sneeze, use a tissue or cough into your arm or elbow - never your hand, because the hands help spread the germs around. When using a tissue, promptly dispose of it and sanitize your hands.

Minimize coughing: When people hear someone cough in a crowded space, 26% feel annoyed, and 46% feel anxious about getting sick themselves, according to a recent online survey conducted by the Harris Poll.

Dr. Adler Using Laser In Battle Against Toe Fungus

According to the American Podiatric Medical Association, approximately 40% of patients visiting a podiatrist have complaints or signs of toe fungus. It may begin with tenderness or pain in the toe, developing into an unsightly thick, darkened nail, and it can spread from toe to toe. In fact, the fungus can get so out of control that it can infect the foot and ankle.

Topical treatment such as Lamisil cream usually is the first course of therapy for a mild or moderate case. However, long-term use or oral antifungal medication is not recommended due to the toxic side effects Lamisil can have on the liver. This is a special risk if a patient is taking other medications, including excessive use of Tylenol that can manifest the same hepatic damage.

Over the past few years, Dr. Charlton Adler has been following closely the application and reported results of laser therapy on fungus toenails and other podiatric and wound situations. He is pleased to announce that he now is able to add this service as a therapeutic option in his office in North Miami Beach.

“The introduction of laser in treating toe fungus has had a major impact on attacking this uncomfortable and unsightly problem,” says Dr. Adler. He further explains that Onychomycosis, the medical term for fungal infection of the nail, is often ignored because it can be present for years without causing pain.

“When the fungus imbeds itself under the nail,” he adds, “the nail surface can become darker in color and the area can develop an odor. The fungus lives on debris under the nail, and white marks can appear on the nail plate.”

Approved for the treatment of nail fungus five years ago by the Food and Drug Administration, the special appeal of lasers is that it selectively heats and destroys harmful fungi while sparing healthy surrounding skin. Because of the intensity of the heat generated by laser rays, Enrique Mechulon a specially trained and certified laser technician working with Dr. Adler, says that both he and the patient wear laser protective glasses and take several rest periods during the 40-minute process.

“I have already witnessed many suc-

cess stories where patients have spent years and thousands of dollars to get rid of their nail fungus,” says Mechulon.

“Depending on the patient’s general health and nail problem, it can take anywhere from one to nine treatments, but the results are there with minimum risk to the body,” he adds.

“I wanted to offer this therapy for quite a while,” says Dr. Adler. “However, I am cautious in my approach, and I needed more proof on studies and reports.” Dr. Adler adds that research shows that 80% of all toe fungus has been healed using laser therapy. “This is in contrast to topical ointments that only work 50% of the time,” says Adler, “and with topical treatment, the infection usually returns.”
