Mary Poppins is the story about the Banks family who live in a big house in London on Cherry Lane. At this particular time things were not going too well for the family and children, Jane and Michael who misbehave badly and are in need of a new nanny. The children have expressed their own ideas as to what sort of caretaker they would like to have. Their parents, especially their father insist on someone very strict for the job.

Things are not going well for the family, and the children who are out of control. Their father, Mr. Banks insists on a someone strict for the job. When a mysterious young woman named Mary Poppins appears at their doorstep, the family finds that

she is the answer to their prayers, but in the most peculiar way. Mary Poppins takes the children on many magical and memorable adventures, but Jane and Michael aren’t the only ones she has a profound effect upon.

Even grown-ups can learn a lesson or two from the nanny who advises that “anything can happen if you let it.”

If you liked the movie, you’ll probably love the show. It features all the classic songs (“A Spoonful of Sugar,” “Chim Chim Cher-ee” and “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious” to name a few) plus some catchy new tunes. With elaborate sets, eyepopping light displays and showstopping numbers, this Disneyrific production will transport you to the Banks’ household on

Cherry Lane as well as the rooftops of London. Mary Poppins is great for the entire family. There’s plenty of spectacle (she flies!), plenty of laughs and songs the whole family will likely keep singing after the show ends.

It features all the classic songs

like “ A Spoon Full of Sugar,” “Chim Chim Cher-ee and of course the tongue twister, “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocio us,” in addition to many others.

Risks Of Hiring An Aide Privately

Well, it happened again. The family of a former patient of our agency called with a horror story of how the patient was taken advantage of by an aide that the client hired privately.

Mrs. R. had been our patient throughout the three years that her long term care insurance paid for aide services, and she was very happy with the aides we had assigned to her. However, once she was faced with paying for the aide out-of-pocket, her friends convinced her that she could pay less money for help that she could hire herself, rather than work through an agency.

At first, Mrs. R was very happy. The aide she hired was kind and attentive. She helped shower and dress Mrs R, helping pick out her clothes, accessories, even her jewelry. The aide liked to listen to Mrs. R’s stories about her trips and the lovely momentos she bought back. Mrs. R also

liked to talk about her designer clothes and how much she spent on her wardrobe. The aide drove Mrs R around in her late husband’s Lexus, taking her shopping, to her doctors, and to the beauty salon. And when they returned home and Mrs. R reclined in her lounge chair for a little nap, the aide prepared dinner and straightened up the house. Mrs. R told her daughter that she was very happy with this aide.

Then, all of a sudden, small items began to disappear. At first, it was costume jewelry and some twenty dollar bills that Mrs R kept for house cash. Then, it was a diamond ring that Mrs R did not to wear regularly and had put away in a secret place for safe keeping. That upset Mrs. R. She became suspicious. She questioned the aide several times, even saying that if the aide needed money, she should just ask her. The aide became

defensive, even sharp and nasty.

That’s when Mrs. R called her daughter. The daughter flew down, helped her mom look for everything and questioned the aide. The aide said she was insulted, and quit.

The family could not accuse her without proof, but felt that was a lesson well learned. That’s when the daughter called us.

Aventura remains one of the most prestigious addresses in south Florida

As the cars race by on Biscayne Boulevard, heading north into Hallandale Beach and Hollywood, it is amazing to look around at the roads, buildings and growth the City of Aventura has endured through the years.

Before it officially became a city in 1995, Aventura was home to one of the largest shopping malls and residential destinations anywhere in the country. It had become a community - in North Miami-Dade that helped shaped the region as much as any other city.

Christian Torres grew up in the shadow of those condos and watched the growth of Aventura before it officially became one of the nation’s most prestigious addresses.

Living in North Miami Beach and moving into one of the first condos back in the early 1970s, Torres recalls the two lane highway and swampland and vegetation that would engulf the 1 mile between U.S. 1 and the intracoastal waterway.

“To see the growth here over the past 46 years is amazing,” Torres explained, pointing to a destination at Ives Dairy Road and Biscayne Blvd. “Right here was a small bar called Lena’s, and it was the only thing between this destination and Gulfstream Race Track up the road.”

It’s memories of Aventura like that and so many more that have made this city special for so long. The first Publix Supermarket on Aventura Blvd. that was a major destination. Arlene Zimmerman Lloyd was a cashier when the store first opened in 1970. Even though it’s been well over 40 years, she remembers it like it happened yesterday.

Lloyd recalls all the trucks and machinery that cleared brush and paved roads that widened every other year.

“I know it sounds funny to most who see this beautiful, bustling area now, but there was nothing here,” Lloyd explained.

“I think to fully understand the city today, knowing that this was one of those communities that grew from the ground up right before many of our eyes - is what really should be appreciated.”

20 GREAT YEARS As the City of Aventura celebrates its 20th anniversary (1995-2015), residents, city officials and those who have thriving businesses that have kept this impressive community in the spotlight, take pride in what this community has become.

In 1995, the City of Aventura incor-

porated and became a new city within Miami-Dade County under its own local government.

With an eye toward the future, Aventura started a police department and immediately hired Thomas Ribel as the first Police Chief. Under his direction, the Command Staff was hired during the following two months of Ribel’s start. Once the Command Staff was in place, other officers were hired to begin conducting backgrounds for additional officers.

Within the next few months, 40 officers were hired, several civilian support personnel were added to the staff and all equipment needed was procured.

On April 1,1997, the City of Aventura Police Department acquired the law enforcement duties for its new city from the Miami-Dade County Police Department. This transition included patrol officers, detectives, communications and other civilian support personnel.

The Aventura Police Department, headed up by Chief Steven Steinberg, is a community-based department, and their 83 full-time officers, with 37 civilians and 15 volunteers, has earned an outstanding

reputation in the law enforcement communities.

THE MALL IS A LANDMARK There is no doubt that one of the most famous addresses and destinations in south Florida has to be the Aventura Mall.

Recognized by millions around the world, this was the facility that gave this city the prestige - since 1983 when it opened.

In 1983, the facility was officially dedicated Aventura Mall. When the mall opened its doors, there would be four anchors that brought crowds in from everywhere in south Florida. In the original, 1,200,000-square-foot facility, there was Lord & Taylor, J.C. Penney, Sears and Macy’s.

SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE When Dr. Michael Krop High School opened in 1999, there were an amazing 400 students who were attending private schools who made their way to the public school that is one of several schools that residents are zoned to attend.

Families now flock to Aventura because it is a beautiful, safe city that has an A-rated charter school, ACES (Aventura City of Excellence School), an abundance of parks, a Community Recreation Center,

sports and cultural activities, a state-ofthe art cultural center and programs for the entire family.

The award-winning Aventura Arts & Cultural Center, now entering its fifth year, is an elegant and intimate venue featuring a wide array of performances, ranging from concerts by international artists, such as this season’s performances by Art Garfunkel, Megan Hilty and Louise Pitre, to the Aventura Foreign Film Series and their Family Fun Series. Broadway, comedy and ballet, flamenco and folkloric dance fill the theatre each year, as well as the innovative educational programming for youngsters.

The City’s Founders’ Day is held every November and thousands of residents and guests turn out at Founders’ Park to enjoy a full day of fun activities like the zipline, rock climbing, trampoline and bungee jumping, as well as field games, arts and science stations, Toddler Town and their STAR Talent Showcase. Planning is underway for this year’s Founders Day scheduled for November 8.

4 paws and a wet nose can save a wounded veteran’s life (BPT) - Combat-wounded veterans often face a new kind of battle when they return home.

Of the 51,000 service members that the Congressional Research Service reports have been injured in Iraq and Afghanistan, thousands have come home to find that not even the love and support of family and friends is enough to help them cope with their physical and mental health disabilities. They struggle with physical challenges, depression, post-traumatic stress (PTS) and suicidal thoughts.

For some of those veterans, salvation comes with four paws and a wet nose.

“I was done. I was ready to leave this body and this pain,” says Roger Lintz, a now-retired Infantry and Special Operations officer who suffered a back injury while on combat duty in Iraq. Two botched surgeries to repair the damage left him severely disabled and in excruciating pain. “I had it all planned out. I knew how I was going to end it.”

Lying in bed, pistol in hand, “I just couldn’t do it,” he recalls.

“I couldn’t do it in front of my dog.”

In February 2012, while between surgeries, the father of two was paired with Niles, a 5year-old, 100-pound chocolate

lab, by Paws for Purple Hearts.

The non-profit organization trains and provides service dogs free of charge to veterans with physical disabilities and PTS. The group is one of the many veterans’ organizations supported by the Purple Heart Foundation, the fundraising arm of the Military Order of the Purple Heart. The foundation also supports other non-profits that provide service dogs to wounded veterans, such as NEADS. “Service dogs are making the lives of wounded veterans better, and in some cases they’re even saving lives,” says Jeffrey Roy, president of the board of the Purple Heart Foundation.

“Veterans returning from combat face many difficulties.

Service dogs help disabled veterans meet physical challenges in day-to-day life, and provide a foundation of stable support and love for those suffering from PTS. The Veteran’s Administration does not fund service dog programs for issues like PTS, so it’s up to organizations like ours to help these veterans.”

Often, a service dog helps his or her veteran in multiple ways.

For example, Niles assists Lintz with physical tasks and provides emotional support to help Lintz

cope with his PTS. “I can’t always tell my wife what I’m going through; I don’t want her suffering anymore,” says Lintz, who served more than 30 years in the U.S. Army. “Every day I have to put on my Superman suit for the people around me, but I can tell my dog anything.

He listens and he understands me without judgment.”

“We take great care to identify dogs with the right personality to help someone with PTS,” says John Moon, director of client programs and community engagement for NEADS. “Only 50 percent of all the dogs we train will qualify to work with humans, and fewer will be right for working with veterans.”

Dogs train for months - Niles trained for a year and a half - as veteran service dogs. Service dogs learn to do a variety of tasks, such as stabilize veterans with mobility issues as they walk, climb stairs, sit or stand; turn lights off and on; open doors and retrieve dropped items (Niles can pick up a single sheet of paper from the floor). They also learn to recognize and respond to a veteran’s emotional state, providing calm, comfort and emotional support.

And while all service dogs receive task and obedience training, those helping veterans with

PTS must have a special personality.

“We choose the most stable dogs for PTS veterans, and we train them in a variety of situations and settings so that no matter what they experience when they’re working with their veteran, no matter what sights or sounds they’re exposed to, they’ll be able to do their job and provide a stabilizing effect for that veteran,” Moon says.

While NEADS and PAWS provide dogs to veterans for free, it costs tens of thousands to train just one dog. Moon says NEADs spends about $47,000 to fully train a service dog for a veteran,

and PAWS’ website says it spends about $25,000. The support of the Purple Heart Foundation is vital in helping NEADS and other organizations continue to provide dogs to veterans, Moon says. To make a donation in support of veterans, visit www.purpleheartfoundation.org.

His pain controlled by a morphine pump, and with Niles by his side, Lintz now volunteers for PAWS as his way of giving back and helping other veterans.

“I could never repay them for what they’ve done for me,” he says. “They gave me my best friend. They gave me a dog who saved my life.”

HOW TO LIVE LONGER

Living a longer healthy life is a joint venture between you, your family and your doctor.

Prevention is the key. Regular checkups are critical. Lab studies and diagnostic tests reveal a lot, alerting the doctor to a developing problem that can be controlled at an early stage. When symptoms appear, the problem already has had an effect.

Medications play their role.

Although they are compounded with certain actions in mind, medications react differently with each patient. The doctor’s decision is based on symptoms, current medications being taken, other conditions, status of the heart and blood pressure, effects other systems, and general lifestyle of the patient. The doctor monitors them carefully and may try a different plan of treatment.

I am a cardiologist, and when I prescribe for my patient, it is a careful balance of medications that are suited to the heart problem in conjunction with

other medications that the patient is taking. For example, medications for high blood pressure are not all the same.

There are alpha blockers, beta blockers, calcium channel blockers, diuretics, etc.

They all have a particular function in controlling the pressure it takes for blood to pump through the heart and then out to the body. Sometimes, we prescribe two or more at the same time.

They need to be taken as directed since their interaction has a direct effect on your heart.

Supplements. Even though they are over-the-counter, claim to be natural and require no prescription, does not mean that herbals, vitamins and minerals cannot effect your body or medications that you are already taking. As an example, Vitamins A, C and E have anticoagulant qualities. If you are taking Warfarin, and possibly baby aspirin, think about how you may be intensifying the anticoagulant effects in your blood, putting you at risk for additional bleeding. If an herbal sleep aid helps with

your insomnia, it is affecting a level of brain action, which is a chemical reaction. Advise your doctor of the supplements you are considering or already taking.

Diet and hydration. When advised to limit salt, sugar, white flour and fried foods, take that seriously. Taking medication to stabilize your blood sugar, blood pressure or cholesterol is a wakeup call, not a license to continue bad habits. A sufficient amount of fluids, particularly water, provides volume in the blood for proper distribution of oxygen through your red blood cells. It is necessary for digestion and elimination, and provides general hydration throughout your system. By the time you feel thirsty, you are already dehydrating.

Patient’s role. It is very important

for patients to take all medications as directed and for the entire time prescribed, many patients will stop taking their antibiotic when they feel better.

This is the worst thing to do, since your body is not entirely rid of the bacteria, and it can re-flourish and return with a vengeance, now resistant to that particular type of medication. Be sure to take medication with at least a half glass of water for quick delivery to the stomach, where it will begin to break up for proper digestion and absorption.

Family support is equally important. However, with their concern for you and best intentions, their guidance and advice should be checked out with the doctor, and that includes all the supplements that they are quick to suggest.

Remember. Good health and living a healthier, longer life is a team effort, and each player has his or her very important role to play. How is your team doing?

How to tackle your home’s stubborn stains and odors (BPT) - From wall stains to washing machines, indoor stains and smells can be a challenge to tackle. Luckily, there are surprisingly simple methods to erase them for good.

Here are a few tips to freshen up the most stubborn spots in your home.

Conceal wall stains with primer: Have your kids made artwork of your walls, or has your leaky roof caused a waterdamaged mess? Tough wall stains like these can be hard to get rid of, but are easily sealed by applying a high-quality, stainblocking primer.

Using a damp, soft cloth or non-abrasive sponge, wipe down these pieces, the interior of your fridge and the door with a multi-purpose cleaner. Or, mix two tablespoons of baking soda with one quart of hot water for a natural soap alternative.

Don’t forget the seams of the shelves and rubber door seal.

If your fridge requires an extra-deep cleaning, unplug it while you work to avoid wasting energy.

Before putting all of your food back into the fridge, wipe down the exterior of each jar or container with a damp cloth. Repeat this process every two or three months for the best results.

Make grout lines shine: Tile surfaces are prone to dirt and debris, especially in bathrooms or high-traffic areas. To keep tile looking fresh and new, grab an old toothbrush or electric toothbrush for a deeper scrub. Before you start, wash the surface with water then mix two parts baking soda with one part water. Scrub the

resulting paste into the cracks and crevices, then douse with water again. If the grout lines are stained, spray a mixture of equal parts vinegar and warm water onto the area and brush. After a final rinse, the grime will be gone.

Prevent a moldy washing machine: If you own a front-loading washing machine, you’ve probably noticed the unpleasant smell that can linger after completing a load of laundry. Despite being more energyefficient, these machines have a tendency to hold odors and harbor mold. To clean and prevent grimy buildup, try this: instead of detergent, cycle two cups of vinegar and a quartercup of baking soda on a hot setting. When it’s done, use a clean sponge to scrub down the inside.

Finally, rinse with a plainwater cycle, and you’ll see (and smell) the results.

Whether in the kitchen, bathroom or laundry room, tricky stains and odors in your home can be a tough job, but with these four tips you’ll be able to eliminate a few messy tasks in no time.
