CITY NEWS 5 reasons ridesharing is on the rise (BPT) - The rideshare industry has exploded in popularity over the past several years, with companies devoted to making transportation safe, reliable and enjoyable. At the swipe of a finger and tap of a button, you can hail a car through your smartphone. Within minutes, you are picked up at your desired location and whisked off to your final destination, whether it’s the grocery store, movie theater or the hottest restaurant in town.

Here are five reasons why millions of Americans are requesting a ride every day:

2. It’s a safe way to get around.

While pairing drivers and passengers who don’t know each other might seem unorthodox, thanks to stringent background checks, car safety checks and real-time ride tracking, hopping in an on-demand ride has become commonplace for people across the country. In fact, Lyft, the fastest growing rideshare service, currently covers 55 percent of the U.S. population, meaning 177 million people are able to request a safe, reliable ride every day. By the end of 2017, that number will increase to 231 million, or 72 percent of the country.

Ridesharing is a powerful driver of economic growth, encouraging local spending and pumping money back into the enrichment of neighborhoods.

1. Owning and maintaining a car is expensive. At more than $9,000 per year, per household, a car is the second most expensive purchase Americans make, yet the average car in the U.S. gets only 4 percent utilization per day. The rideshare industry was born from the idea that by pairing drivers and passengers headed in the same general direction, not only is traffic significantly reduced, but car ownership ultimately becomes optional when you know you have a ride you can rely on.

3. Ridesharing promotes community and economic growth. Not only is it an efficient way to get from point A to point B, ridesharing connects both people and communities. In 2016 alone, more than 162.5 million Lyft rides were taken. This opens the door for people who wouldn’t normally cross paths to share a car together. Drivers get to drop off passengers in neighborhoods they might not regularly venture to, and business owners serve customers that previously didn’t have easy access to their location.

4. As a driver, ridesharing provides an excellent source of income. Be it primary or supplementary, driving provides flexibility and allows people to own their schedules, clocking in and out when they want, where they want. From coast to coast, teachers, retirees, aspiring musicians and everyone in between are using ridesharing as a source of income. Lyft is the only platform that allows passengers to tip, with more than $150 million dollars going directly into the pockets of their drivers.

5. On-demand transportation is proven to reduce drunk driving.

According to a recent study, 88 percent of passengers say they are more likely to avoid driving while impaired because of Lyft, and 53 percent of passengers use the platform to safely get friends and family home who are intoxicated. One tap of a button ultimately leads to saving lives by reducing the number of intoxicated drivers on the road.

CITY NEWS Lessons Learned In Hiring A Private Aide By the daughter of an Aventura mom

Finally, I found the perfect person to look after mom, who could no longer live alone safely. Marie, the aide, was referred by another aide in mom’s building, who seemed to take great care of a very demanding neighbor who was showing signs of confusion like my mother. During the interview process, Marie demonstrated patience, attentiveness to mom’s needs, and had glowing references. I even called two of them, who were out of state, but who affirmed how good Marie was to them or their family member. What a relief! After three weeks in Florida, I finally was able to return to my family in Ohio and feel that mom was in good hands.

At first, all was fabulous. Mom said Marie helped her with showering, picking out her clothes, made small meals, and they went to dinner a lot. Mom also said Marie helped her clean out her drawers and closets, and helped her organize her things.

Then, mom began to complain that Marie moves things around, and mom cannot find them. She told Marie to keep things in one place, and that Marie raised her voice to her. I spoke to Marie, who

said mom moves things around herself, and then cannot find them. I suggested that since mom can get confused, it might be best to organize things the way it would be easier for her. The next day, mom called and said her diamond ring and earrings were missing, and the $400 spare money that she has kept in the corner of her bedside table for years was also missing. I asked to speak to Marie. Mom informed me that Marie went down to the store and had not yet returned.

When I called back later, mom said Marie still had not returned and she did not know what she should do for dinner. I called Security in mom’s building. They had not seen the aide since she left in the morning. I asked them to check on mom.

Feeling upset myself, I called another neighbor, asking if she could either include my mother in her dinner plans or help mom order delivery from a local restaurant, and then see to it that she had something for breakfast in the morning. I called the Aventura police to report a possible theft, and booked an early morning flight back to Florida.

What an ordeal followed. However, at least mom was not physically harmed!

an agency due to a slightly higher cost, I began a rapid search of getting competent help as soon as possible, calling mom’s doctors and going online. The name Always Classic Care came up several times. When I called, the staff was most professional asking about mom’s status and needs. The owner, Terry Adler, joined the conversation with more specific questions about mom’s personality and capability status, as well as my concerns and services I felt mom would need. Terry advised me that she and her staff would confer immediately to select the most suitable aide, and that she would personally supervise the case. To my surprise, once paperwork was completed with staff, Terry called me back to report she had someone very special for mom who could start later that evening or first thing in the morning. I was amazed. Well, mom hit it off with the new aide immediately, and she has now been with mom for the over a year. It definitely was a great match.

Although I had avoided going through an agency because of the slightly higher cost, it took a bad experience for me to realize the many advantages of using a home health agency or nurse registry.

Aside from dealing with professionals, home health agencies are regulated by the State of Florida. All of their healthcare

workers must submit to a rigorous screening process that includes FBI fingerprinting for any history of wrong doing. A registered agency such as Always Classic Care requires a personal interview conducted by a professional staff who also scrutinize documentation of training, references and work history, and applicants are required to complete pre-employment testing as to knowledge of various levels of care. Also, if there is any problem, question, personality or communication issue once the aide is assigned, the agency will get involved and make immediate changes. And, as in the case of the missing Marie, Terry told me they would have become integrally involved in the investigation. I found that the agency may cost a few dollars more per hour than a private hiring, but now, the cost seems minimal when compared to the open communication and peace of mind that it can bring.

(BPT) - Most parents, or soon-to-be parents, are often aware of the obvious baby proofing checklist items: baby gates, electrical outlet covers, cabinet locks, sharp furniture corners, etc. However, according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), there are a surprising number of “hidden” hazards around the home. These hazards, such as window cords, hide in plain sight and should be on everyone’s list of items to baby proof.

Corded window coverings are a strangulation hazard as infants and young children can accidentally become entangled in the cords. CPSC, the window covering industry and consumer safety advocates all agree that only cordless window coverings or those with inaccessible cords should be used in homes with young children. According to the CPSC, corded window coverings are one of the top five hidden hazards in American homes. Check your window coverings for exposed or dangling cords and replace them with cordless products. Safety experts recommend using only cordless window coverings in homes with young children. A child can be trapped underwater from the suction of a pool or spa drain.

If this is your second child, be certain to keep the older siblings toys in a separate area from the baby, in order to prevent them from possibly choking on small pieces. Button batteries.

A child can swallow a button battery and suffer chemical burns in as little as two hours. Leave all devices with accessible button batteries - watches, remote controls, toys, keyless remote controls, etc. - out of the reach of children. City of Aventura Accepts Applications for its Youth Advisory Board The City of Aventura will be accepting applications for member positions available on the Youth Advisory Board through Friday, June 2, 2017. Potential board members must be Aventura residents of high school age and be actively enrolled in a public or private high school.

Applicants must be willing to make a oneyear commitment and attend monthly meetings during the regular school year.

The Board consists of seven members appointed by the Mayor, subject to the approval of the City Commission. The

Aventura’s First Ever High School Is Coming!

private education, the opportunity to attend a school less than 2 miles from their homes, was something that many parents simply could not turn down.

Allyce Parker’s son, Greg, was a Dr. Krop graduate who came from Chaminade-Madonna back in 2003. Greg had spent his entire school years in private schools, attending Visitation - in North Miami-Dade - and then Chaminade-Madonna.

The reason for the move was education.

“Tough to believe that a public high school could ever give you what a private education could, but when parents found out what they had to offer and who their principal was going to be, it turned out to be a no brainer for us,” Parker explained.

Indeed, the first principal at Dr. Krop was current Aventura

Mayor Enid Weisman. Her track record for raising the bar in education was the driving force behind Dr. Krop having so many private school and out-of-area transfers coming in. The innovative programs certainly enhanced the way students look at school.

Fast forward nearly two decades - and with Mayor Weisman helping to create so many positives within the City Aventura is going to get its own high school - and the news could not have been any better for a resident base that has been getting younger and younger by the year.

With Dr. Krop alleviating the crowding at North Miami Beach High School; and Alonzo & Tracy Mourning High School helping to take the growing populations at both North Miami and North Miami Beach, a new charter school, scheduled for an August

2019 opening, will certainly give the residents of Aventura an option.

A few months back, the Aventura City Commission entered into an agreement with Gulfstream Park Racing Association, Inc. to purchase 2 acres of property next to Waterways Park.

While things are still in the planning stages in developing a charter high school with capacity for 800 students, it has truly caused a major wave in this normally quiet community.

Michael Isaacson recently moved from Chicago with his wife, Elaine, and four children.

All went to private schools since starting out, but with the positive reviews coming in for many of the charter schools in South Florida, they are both willing to wait.

When Dr. Michael Krop Senior High School opened its doors nearly 20 years ago, the facility - just to the west of I-95, and to the north of Ives Dairy Road - did something that no other public school had ever done.

While Dr. Krop’s first graduating class had many local students from Aventura, Ives Estates, California Club and Highland Lakes, it also included nearly 400 students that had come from private schools.

Dr. Krop had attracted many students who had been structured into that private environment all of their educational lives - and the very thought that a public school would be able to provide that kind of lure was indeed groundbreaking.

While public schools have long taken a backseat to a

With a target opening date of August 2019, with 9th and 10th graders only, many have been excited as Charter Schools USA was called upon by City Manager Eric Soroka to assist in the planning of the school and the overall management once it is opened.

For 8th grade student C.C. Cohen who has lived in Aventura all of her young life, having a high school less than 5 minutes from her home is very exciting.

She is expecting to attend the school, but will also have to start out at Dr. Krop before making the move over in 2019.

“My friends and their parents have been talking about the possibility of going there,” said Cohen, who is already making plans to play tennis at her new high school. “I think it would be great to live close to the school.”

Since 2003, the City of Aventura has operated the Aventura City of Excellence School, which is also a charter school serving 1020 K-8 students. The City plans on filing an application for the school with the Miami-Dade County School Board and begin construction in the fall of this year. As proposed, the school would provide preference to Aventura residents. The high school would provide another educational choice for the children of the City of Aventura.

A public meeting to discuss the school with the community will be scheduled in the near future.

Soroka said earlier this year that without Gulfstream Park Racing Association, which owns the land next to Waterways, this would never have been possible because of the cost of the property.

From the parcel of land that was nothing more than vegetation and hope 40 years ago, Aventura has certainly grown up. With a nationallyknown shopping mecca and a world-class hospital and medical community, you can soon add high school to that impressive list that makes a home - a home!

This summer travel season, T-Mobile and research firm GfK released a new study that shows Americans’ reliance on their smartphones, and how potentially pricey travel could be for those who don’t understand the costs of international roaming.

The study found that 69 percent of Americans take their smartphone when they leave the country and travelers are willing to make extreme tradeoffs for connectivity and the ability to maintain contact with friends and family.

Indeed, more than half (55 percent) of Americans would rather lose their luggage than their smartphone, and two thirds (66 percent) of Americans would trade their preferred seat on a plane to

Dr. Adler Using Laser In Battle Against Toe Fungus

According to the American Podiatric Medical Association, approximately 40% of patients visiting a podiatrist have complaints or signs of toe fungus. It may begin with tenderness or pain in the toe, developing into an unsightly thick, darkened nail, and it can spread from toe to toe. In fact, the fungus can get so out of control that it can infect the foot and ankle.

Topical treatment such as Lamisil cream usually is the first course of therapy for a mild or moderate case. However, long-term use or oral antifungal medication is not recommended due to the toxic side effects Lamisil can have on the liver. This is a special risk if a patient is taking other medications, including excessive use of Tylenol that can manifest the same hepatic damage.

Over the past few years, Dr. Charlton Adler has been following closely the application and reported results of laser therapy on fungus toenails and other podiatric and wound situations. He is pleased to announce that he now is able to add this service as a therapeutic option in his office in North Miami Beach.

“The introduction of laser in treating toe fungus has had a major impact on attacking this uncomfortable and unsightly problem,” says Dr. Adler. He further explains that Onychomycosis, the medical term for fungal infection of the nail, is often ignored because it can be present for years without causing pain.

“When the fungus imbeds itself under the nail,” he adds, “the nail surface can become darker in color and the area can develop an odor. The fungus lives on debris under the nail, and white marks can appear on the nail plate.”

Approved for the treatment of nail fungus five years ago by the Food and Drug Administration, the special appeal of lasers is that it selectively heats and destroys harmful fungi while sparing healthy surrounding skin. Because of the intensity of the heat generated by laser rays, Enrique Mechulon a specially trained and certified laser technician working with Dr. Adler, says that both he and the patient wear laser protective glasses and take several rest periods during the 40-minute process.

“I have already witnessed many suc-

cess stories where patients have spent years and thousands of dollars to get rid of their nail fungus,” says Mechulon.

“Depending on the patient’s general health and nail problem, it can take anywhere from one to nine treatments, but the results are there with minimum risk to the body,” he adds.

“I wanted to offer this therapy for quite a while,” says Dr. Adler. “However, I am cautious in my approach, and I needed more proof on studies and reports.” Dr. Adler adds that research shows that 80% of all toe fungus has been healed using laser therapy. “This is in contrast to topical ointments that only work 50% of the time,” says Adler, “and with topical treatment, the infection usually returns.”
