Digital Literacy Tips for Older Adults

If current trends continue, decades of gentle teasing and jokes about older adults’ confusion with technology may be on their way out. Not only do digital tools and technology help this generation stay connected to family and friends, but technology is also making it more practical for these individuals to remain independent and age in place.

Assistive and health-related technology is also on the rise, according to a “U.S. News & World Report.” Tools like medical or health apps, wearable trackers, hearing devices and some smart home products make it easier and safer for older adults to age in place.

Whether for social, practical or entertainment purposes, growing your confidence with technology and digital tools can be a slow, steady process that allows you to increase your comfort level while building a solid understanding.

Boost your digital literacy with these tips from the tech experts at Cox Communications:

Find resources that allow you to participate in digital literacy education. Many community groups offer classes geared toward older adults, and you can also find resources from internet providers. If you’re comfortable searching the internet, you can also find support groups and user-friendly guides online.

Slow down. When it comes to digital literacy, the internet can be fast-moving, which can be overwhelming for older adults who are not used to the environment. The pace can also expose you to the

nology devices and services available, it’s possible, and even advisable, to explore the various options before making a purchase or signing an agreement. Consider the features you need against your budget to make the best choice. For example, options like Cox Communications’ Connect Assist program can help you find fast, reliable and affordable internet plans to fit within your retirement budget.

Take breaks. Digital media can become addictive for older adults; with so much to see and learn, it’s easy to lose literally hours. That’s why it’s a good idea to take a

interaction shouldn’t replace your personal relationships. Be sure to prioritize live social connections, and don’t use digital media in place of conventional inperson connections that can provide important benefits for your overall physical and mental health.

Stay informed about cybercrime. Because of their limited experience with technology, older adults are major targets of cybercrime. Stay informed about methods and tactics used by these criminals so you can protect yourself, your identity and your assets.

Use strong passwords. If your memory isn’t what it used to be, you may be tempted to repurpose your passwords so you don’t have to remember as many. Unfortunately, that approach may mean that if someone figures out how to access one account, they have access to many more. Create passwords that are a mix of letters, numbers and symbols and write them down in a safe place. Generally, it’s best to avoid using easily guessed information like birthdays and names of children.

Be cautious about what you read and share online. If something seems questionable, verify it with multiple sources before accepting it as true.

100 Years Of Gershwin’s Rhapsody In Blue

South Florida Symphony Orchestra Launches

Its 2024-25 Season

South Florida Symphony Orchestra (SFSO), led by the Award-Winning Sebrina María Alfonso, will launch its riveting 2024-25 Icons & Rebels Masterworks Season with “100 Years of Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue,” an anniversary tribute to one of popular culture’s most beloved masterpieces, featuring Acclaimed Pianist Benjamin Hochman, the orchestra premiere of Prokofiev’s The Love for Three Oranges Suite and Elgar’s Symphony No. 1. The programs will take place on Wednesday, November 13th at 7:30 p.m. atThe Parker, located at 707 Northeast 8th Street, Fort Lauderdale, Florida 33304 and on Saturday, November 16th at 7:30 p.m. at New World Center, located at 500 17th Street, Miami Beach, Florida 33139.

“Opening with Rhapsody in Blue, one of the most consequential works by an American composer ever, performed with Hochman’s sparkling virtuosity, is sure to energize audiences. Coupled with the premiere of Prokofiev’s whimsical and bold Love for Three Oranges Suite and Elgar’s majestic First Symphony, we are setting the tone for an unforgettable season,” says Maestra Alfonso. “I’m especially thrilled that, for the first time, we will perform all five of our Masterworks concerts at Miami Beach’s spectacular New World Center as well as return to our beloved theaters,The Parker and Broward Center’s Au-Rene Theater. The musicians and I are positively buzzing with excitement as we kick off our 27th Season and can’t wait to greet new and familiar faces.”

Celebrating 100 years of Rhapsody in Blue, George Gershwin shocked critics who did not know how to process the unconventional work when it debuted in 1924. Gershwin’s melding of American Jazz and Classical Music broke boundaries and shattered norms. Today, he is revered as one of the greatest American Composers of all time. Acclaimed Pianist Benjamin Hochman lends his talents to the masterpiece.

Chicago and Pittsburgh Symphonies, and Prague Philharmonia soon followed. A winner of Lincoln Center’s Avery Fisher Career Grant, Hochman has performed at venues and festivals across the globe, including the Philharmonie in Berlin, Vienna Konzerthaus, the Kennedy Center in Washington, Suntory Hall in Tokyo, Germany’s Klavierfestival Ruhr, and Lucerne and Verbier Festivals in Switzerland. Despite a medical setback in 2015 affecting his left hand, he pursued a conductor’s role, studying with Alan Gilbert at Juilliard where he received the BrunoWalter Scholarship and the Charles Schiff Award. He created the Roosevelt Island Orchestra, consisting of some of New York’s finest orchestral and chamber musicians alongside promising young talent from top conservatories. In 2018, fully recovered, he returned to the piano. Hochman’s recent highlights include conducting the Szeged Philharmonic in Hungary and the Orlando Philharmonic

A symphony in A-flat major? Quite rare indeed. Sir Edward Elgar’s Symphony No. 1 stands out as a remarkable exception in this regard. As a violinist, Elgar understood the challenges of playing in A-flat, yet that’s what he boldly composed in his first symphony, which beautifully explores the universal human experiences of love and hope.

Now in its 27th Season, SFSO invites audiences to a tantalizing season featuring upcoming works by Mozart, Strauss and Berlioz, plus a glorious Handel’s Messiah performance and an eagerly anticipated orchestra premiere of Bernstein’s satirical masterpiece Candide. The concerts will take place in Fort Lauderdale, Miami and KeyWest.

Hochman adds, “I am excited to perform George Gershwin’s Rhapsody with Maestra Alfonso and the talented musicians of South Florida Symphony Orchestra. It’s an iconic work by a great American genius of the 20th Century who bridged the gap between Classical Music, Popular Music and Jazz. Everyone knows this piece and for good reason. I love playing it and can’t wait to share it with you all.”

Sergei Prokofiev, unorthodox and inventive, is known for his Neo-Classical, modernist approach. His The Love for Three Oranges Suite, taken from his comedic opera, is a whimsical musical jaunt about a cursed prince who is forced to journey to distant lands in search of three rather large oranges, each contain-

From sold-out masterworks performances to accompanying today’s musicians such as Natalie Merchant and performing modern musical scores, South Florida’s largest symphonic orchestra is continuing its journey of excellence inspiring audiences of all ages and musical genres. Broward County Transit Keeps Moving, Even During a Storm A behind the scenes look at BCT during an emergency

From Left to Right: Broward County Transit top administrators, Tim Garling, Coree Cuff Lonergan, Paul Strobis, Angelica Jones worked at the Emergency Operations Center in advance of Hurricane Milton.

In a discreet, nondescript building nestled in the heart of Broward County, the Emergency Operations Center (EOC) serves as a hub of strategic focus on keeping the county safe during an emergency like a storm. Rows of monitors illuminate maps and live updates, guiding rapid decisions and coordinated actions from government agencies across the county. During a storm, this center operates 24 hours a day, becoming the focal point for ensuring the safety and mobility of Broward County residents.

When Hurricane Milton threatened the area recently, Broward County Transit (BCT) top administration reported to the EOC, monitored storm conditions and made critical decisions to maintain transit services during the storm. “Even in moments like this, the goal of BCT is to provide 100% on-time service while ensuring the safety of our bus operators and staff,” BCT Deputy General Manager Tim Garling explained.

In the fast-paced environment of the EOC, communication is vital. The BCT team relies on real-time reports from operations teams, including bus operators and supervisors in the field. Dispatchers continuously adjust routes based on road conditions.

“Another goal for BCT especially dur-

ing a storm is ensuring the safety of riders while keeping the buses operational,” Garling continued. “We always remain committed to getting people where they need to go safely even during emergencies.”

As the storm approached, BCT fully activated its communication strategy to keep the public informed of its operations. It utilized the news media, social platforms, BCT website, and BCT enewsletter, Transit Flash, which provides subscribers with real-time service changes. BCT 24-hour customer service hotline also remained available to assist

passengers with trip-related inquiries.

“Every crisis is unpredictable,” Angelica Jones, Deputy General Manager of BCT stated. “Although we have conducted thorough planning for various disasters, we remain prepared to adjust to the unexpected challenges that arise.”

Behind the scenes, the BCT team works tirelessly to ensure passengers’ experience is safe and reliable. Throughout the hurricane, BCT remained fully operational to provide residents with uninterrupted access to dependable transit services despite challenging conditions.

Fight Back Against Free Radicals Expert advice to prevent skin damage

In a healthy person, the body is like a well-oiled machine. However, sometimes things go wrong, and when that happens, finding the source of damage, illness or disease often requires a deeper look. In many cases, the culprit is free radicals.

The experts at Heliocare, makers of daily dietary supplements with powerful formulas that have antioxidant effects, explain how to help neutralize the effects of free radicals and reduce their impact.

What are free radicals anyway?

One would probably need some knowledge of chemistry to fully understand free radicals, but simply put, the natural process of the body’s cell metabolism can create unstable molecules, i.e., free radicals. There are also numerous sources of environmental free radicals, including air pollution, radiation, medications and pesticides, as well as certain foods, alcohol and even exercise.

The body naturally produces antioxidants to keep free radicals in check, but if too many of them accumulate, they can create oxidative stress.

What kinds of damage can free radicals cause?

Excess free radicals, and in turn oxidative stress, can impact how the body ages and produce visible evidence such as wrinkles and sunspots. There is evidence that free radicals may also contribute to the formation of some diseases and conditions, including accelerated signs of aging.

How can you reduce their impact?

It’s impossible to eliminate free radicals completely. However, you can take steps to protect your body, and especially your skin, from their harmful impacts

with a few simple everyday actions.

• Reduce exposure: Avoid spending excess time in the sun and always use sunscreen. Limit your alcohol consumption and avoid smoking (including secondhand smoke). Be conscious of air pollution and use air purifiers.

• Increase antioxidants: Elevating the amount of antioxidants in your body is another way you can offset free radicals. Many dermatologists recommend dietary supplements like Heliocare Daily Use Antioxidant Formula, a clinically proven supplement with antioxidant properties due to proprietary Fernblock PLETechnology that harnesses the power of the unique polypodium leucotomos fern. The antioxidant properties in this oral supplement aids in eliminating free radicals, helping to protect your skin from their effects that can cause wrinkles, discoloration and other signs of environmental aging.

• Manage your stress levels: High levels of stress, both physical and emotional, can lead to stress hormones generating free radicals. Practice mindfulness, do things you enjoy and consider habits like meditation or yoga to keep stress levels in check.

• Fight with your diet: Eating plenty of antioxidant-rich foods can also reduce your risk of free radical damage. Examples include produce rich in vitamin C, like broccoli, cauliflower, leafy greens, strawberries and grapefruit.

You Snore?

Are You Always Tired?

Snoring Is No Laughing Matter!

It may be more than just an annoying habit, it may be a sign of Sleep Apnea

What Exactly is Sleep Apnea?

When the muscles that control the upper airway relax, some people begin to snore. When the airway becomes completely blocked and the person temporarily stops breathing, this is an episode of “Obstructive Apnea.” Each Apnea event may last for a few seconds or up to a couple minutes or more. Events may happen frequently - even several hundred times a night.

Can This Condition Be Treated? How?

There are many effective treatments for snoring. A widely accepted treatment for Sleep Apnea is oral appliance therapy. An oral device custom fit by your dentist is designed to keep your airway open and help prevent Apneas.

The American Academy of Sleep Medicine

Recommends an oral appliance as a first-line treatment option for patients with mild to moderate Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA), and for those with severe OSA who either decline CPAP Therapy or are unable to successfully use CPAP Therapy. This treatment does not involve medications or surgery and helps hundreds of thousands of people all over the world enjoy sleeping safely for a healthier life. Many experience the benefits quickly - often during the first night of use.

Your Vote, Your Voice

A Message From The Vice Mayor of Sunny Isles Beach

The general election will be on November 5. Voters will not only decide who will be our next president, but also cast their votes for federal representatives, state representatives, special state legislative, state Supreme Court, ballot measures, county mayor, and municipal government officials. It seems like a lot and one may even wonder what impact our vote has in guiding the direction of this country at a federal, state, and local level. Constituents must understand that they can influence political matters, and the more involved they are, the more power they wield. It all starts by casting your vote.

According to Statista, voter turnout in this country for the past three general elections ranged between 56% and 61%, which is similar to voter turnout in Sunny Isles Beach. While this is a positive showing, it means about 40% of registered voters are not being heard. The percentage of people not voting is much higher for primary and special elections. One must note that voting matters because it puts pressure on candidates and elected officials, reminding them that the voter is ultimately in charge. The greater the number of voters, the greater the pressure. The more people who participate in the elec-

are spent, and foster civic engagement. Voting is not only our right but also our civic duty. It’s the most crucial element in maintaining our democratic process healthy. Please vote and be heard.

Emerge as Treatments for Depression Especially for People Who Don’t Benefit from Traditional Therapies

Ketamine and other anesthetic drugs have emerged as a powerful new tool to rapidly treat depression, especially for people who don’t benefit from traditional therapies. With conversations regarding these drugs circulating in the news and online, anesthesiologists - physicians who are experts in using them to sedate patients during surgery - are shedding light on the latest research and recommendations to ensure they are used safely as a mental health treatment.

More than one in five U.S. adults lives with a mental health illness (57.8 million) and over 21 million Americans had at least one major depressive episode in 2021. Many individuals with depression experience symptom relief with psychotherapy and antidepressants, but for nearly one-third (30%) of patients these therapies are ineffective, known as treatment-resistant depression.

“The current research into these drugs offers hope to people with a common, debilitating and potentially fatal mood disorder,” said Peter Nagele, M.D., an editor at Anesthesiology, the peer-reviewed journal of the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA). “With this new use for common anesthetics, we believe it is important to use our knowledge and training, working collaboratively with psy-

chiatrists, to advance patient care and safety. This includes ensuring patients receive this treatment under the supervision of a physician and in an accredited clinic following established safety standards.” On World Mental Health Day, ASA shares the latest information on the various anesthetics being repurposed, how anesthesiologists and psychiatrists may be able to increase their collaboration, and questions patients should ask.

Anesthetics Being Repurposed for Treatment of Depression

Ketamine’s unique benefits include working in minutes or hours vs. weeks, compared to traditional antidepressants, and its persistent positive effects on mood. Ketamine originally was developed to induce and maintain anesthesia and its antidepressant effects were first identified in 2000. When used to treat depression, it is administered at a low dose intravenously (IV therapy), as a U.S. Food and Drug Administration-approved nasal spray or a combination of both in a series of treatments given over a few days or once a week. After a single treatment, a patient’s symptoms may improve for days or even weeks.

While most studies have focused on ketamine, researchers are also looking

into nitrous oxide, more commonly known as laughing gas, and IV propofol, a common anesthetic used during medical procedures, among others. As with ketamine, patients’ depression scores have improved during preliminary trials, and there is evidence nitrous oxide’s effects last beyond the initial treatment.

Further research is needed to fully understand why these drugs are so effective against depression. Scientists believe it may be because they act on different receptors and address imbalances between chemicals in the brain.

How Anesthesiologists and Psychiatrists are Partnering to Help Patients

The authors of a special article recently published in Anesthesiology recommend anesthesiologists take a more active role in the repurposing of anesthetic drugs as antidepressants. They propose developing a subspecialty focused on anesthetic neuropsychiatry that includes physicians and researchers who can serve as liaisons between these two specialties and help collaborate activities including:

• facilitating joint research training with an emphasis on postgraduate degree programs,

• sharing in the design of clinical trials,

• conducting interdisciplinary departmental rounds, and,

• combining efforts to advance technologies in brain imaging.

What Patients Need to Know

While ketamine and other anesthetics show great promise in treating depression and anxiety for certain patients, they may have side effects and can be dangerous if not used or administered correctly.

ASA encourages patients interested in these drugs to ask the following:

• Is this treatment right for me?These drugs do not offer a universal cure and patients need to be evaluated and selected carefully by a psychiatrist for these treatments.

•Where will I receive my treatment? Patients should receive the medications only under medical supervision, such as in an accredited clinic with established safety standards.

•Who is prescribing my treatment? These drugs need to be prescribed, administered and carefully managed by skilled physicians.

Ketamine’s unique benefits include working in minutes or hours vs. weeks, compared to traditional antidepressants.

According to the U.S. Surgeon General, Americans face a lack of social connection that poses a significant risk to individual health and longevity. “Loneliness and social isolation increase the risk for premature death by 26% and 29%, respectively. More broadly, lacking social connection can increase the risk for premature death as much as smoking up to 15 cigarettes a day,” per the report.

One way to address this epidemic of loneliness is by sharing a meal with friends and family. Learn five of the specific advantages of family meals identified by the Family Meals Movement and take advantage of these benefits during National Family Meals Month this September by sharing one more meal together each week.

Meals Together Foster Togetherness and Connectedness

Staying connected can be hard when schedules conflict and life gets busy, but shared meals with friends, family or however you define your family can be the glue that holds people together. Studies demonstrate a positive relationship

between family meal frequency and measures of family functioning, which is defined as family connectedness, communication, expressiveness and problemsolving. The key is for family members to engage in conversation with one another during mealtimes and take advantage of the one-on-one time without distractions or interruptions from smartphones or other devices.

Meals Together Strengthen Mental Health

An often overlooked benefit of family meals is mental health support. Multiple studies show family meals have long been associated with improving mental health, including reducing symptoms of depression, decreasing violent behavior and lessening thoughts of suicide among youth. Among adolescents, frequent family meals can help mitigate the risks of destructive behaviors by boosting prosocial behaviors and life satisfaction. Data from the FMI Foundation’s “Staying Strong with Family Meals” Barometer shows family meals also help restore a sense of peace, with one-third of survey respondents saying family meals make

them feel calm. In short, family meals are a recipe for strengthening emotional wellbeing among children and adolescents.

Meals Together Improve Nutrition

There is one easy way to help ensure your family is eating fruits and vegetables: a family meal. Research shows family meals improve fruit and vegetable consumption. It also pays to start this trend early, with research finding preschoolaged children who eat frequent family meals are more likely to eat more fruits and vegetables. Overall, research indicates families who eat together frequently have a better overall healthy diet and lower body mass index.

Meals Together Improve Academic Performance

Helping students’ academic performance begins around the family dinner table. Eating more meals together as a family is associated with improved overall adolescent health, including higher grades. Multiple studies show students whose families eat together frequently perform better academically in areas such

as reading and vocabulary. Research also supports a correlation between frequent family meals lowering incidents of risky and harmful behaviors, including drug and alcohol abuse, which may also contribute to school performance.

Meals Together Teach Civility

The family dinner table is a perfect place to show younger generations how to communicate respectfully, according to the Family Meals Barometer summary. In fact, 76% of survey participants agreed family meals are a good opportunity to have and teach respectful interactions while 70% said frequent family meals create a safe environment for families to discuss thornier societal issues. Another 68% affirmed their belief that sitting at a meal together tends to keep conversations more civil.

It’s Sign Season

Sunny Isles Beach Has New Temporary Sign Regulations

At its regular meeting in August, the City Commission of Sunny Isles Beach adopted an ordinance revising the regulations for all types of temporary signs, including onpremises and off-premises signs. These temporary signs are subject to specific rules. It is essential for property owners to understand that they are ultimately responsible for ensuring that any signs on their property adhere to these regulations. Below is a breakdown of the new rules governing off-premises temporary signs, which include, but are not limited to, political campaign signs.

Property Owner Responsibility

As a property owner, it is your responsibility to ensure compliance with these new regulations. Whether for personal, business, or political purposes, any offpremises temporary sign placed on your property must follow these rules. Failure to comply may result in the issuance of a civil violation.

By understanding and following these guidelines, you help maintain the safety, aesthetics, and order of our community. Your cooperation is greatly appreciated. By following these new sign regulations, you ensure that your property remains in compliance while supporting community standards for temporary signage.

Key Regulations for Off-Premises Temporary Signs

An off-premises sign advertises a business, product, service, or event that is not located on the same property as the sign. This is different from an on-premises sign, which advertises something that is directly related to the property, such as real estate, construction, or grand opening signs. Below are key regulations for off-premises signs:

• No Permit Required. Property owners are not required to obtain a permit for off-premises temporary signs.

• Number of Signs. Each property is allowed a maximum of 3 off-premises temporary signs at any given time.

• Placement Restrictions. Off-premises temporary signs cannot be placed on public rights-of-way or on cityowned property. This includes utility poles, traffic signs, bus shelters, and similar City Infrastructure. If any signs are placed in violation of this rule, the city reserves the right to remove them without prior notice, which may also result in the issuance of a civil violation.

• Non-Illumination Requirement.Temporary signs must remain static and cannot be illuminated in any way. This includes prohibitions on lighting that flashes, moves, rotates, blinks, or changes in intensity or color.

• Consent from Property Owners. Signs cannot be placed on any property without the explicit consent of the property owner. Property owners are responsible for removing signs that are placed without their permission.

•Time Limit for Display.Temporary signs can be displayed for a maximum of 120 consecutive days, once per calendar year, per sign.

• Prohibited Sign Locations.Temporary signs cannot be affixed to fences, trees, balcony railings, rooftops, windows, or doors.

Regulations by Zoning District

The rules for off-premises temporary signs vary slightly depending on the zoning district:

R-1, RMF-1, RTH Zoning Districts

• Maximum number of signs per property: 3

• Maximum height: 3 feet from the ground to the top of the sign

• Maximum sign area: 3.5 square feet, per sign

RMF-2, MUR, TCD, B-1, BO Zoning Districts

• Maximum number of signs per property: 3

• Maximum height: 6 feet from the ground to the top of the sign

Maximum sign area: 8 square feet per sign and signs must be set back at least 6 feet from all property lines. To view the City Zoning Map visit: https://www.sibfl.gov/ files/assets/city/v/1/city-hall/images/maps/zoningmap.jpg

Political Signs as Off-Premises Temporary Signs

With the 2024 election cycle well underway, it’s important to note that political signs are treated as offpremises temporary signs under these regulations. Therefore, they are subject to the same restrictions and guidelines outlined above. Candidates and their supporters should work with property owners to ensure that campaign signs comply with these rules, particularly regarding placement and the time limits for display.

While the incidence of HIV in the United States has been declining and progress in HIV Prevention is being made, the progress is not uniform, and significant disparities based on race, ethnicity, and region exist. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Florida, specifically, has one of the nation’s highest rates of HIV diagnosis, with 21.7 per 100,000, compared with national rate of 12.7 per 100,000.4 AIDSVu relates that In Fort Lauderdale, the rate is 36 per

100,000.5. Additionally, according to Feeding America, the Fort Lauderdale area has a significant population of people with food insecurity. Food insecurity is associated with poor nutrition, chronic disease, and lack of healthcare access. Between 25% and 80% of people living with HIV experience food insecurity, and they have significantly worse HIV-specific health outcomes. Screening people who attend a Food Pantry/Farmer’s Market may identify people living with HIV who are either unaware of their diagnosis or not engaged in care.

“By concentrating and targeting our efforts on Fort Lauderdale’s underserved population, we hope to help break the barriers to care for people who have inadequate access to food and, possibly, unstable housing and employment,” said David Serota, MD, MSC, Associate Professor of Clinical Medicine at University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. “Initiatives like the ‘Feeding Souls, Protecting Bodies: HIV Outreach’

program allow us to close the gaps in HIV care and move us closer towards ending the HIV epidemic.”

At the “Feeding Souls” Farmer’s Market, medical staff from Holy Cross Health will be on-site to offer health education, pamphlets (in English, Spanish, and Creole) and free screenings for HIV, as well as Blood Pressure, Cholesterol, Diabetes, Hepatitis C, and Syphilis. Referral coordinators will also be present to help patients schedule follow-up visits with healthcare providers. Event visitors are encouraged to engage with the various partners through a fun health passport game. Holy Cross will offer a $10 Visa gift card for those who get a stamp in their passport plus they will be entered into a raffle to win a $100Visa gift card.
