A Family Experience At The Braverman Eye Center

Introduction Many people that I know who need to wear prescription lenses, do so only out of necessity. The fashionable aspect of it is secondary, only because you need to wear them. I was diagnosed with myopia at the age of nine years. Wearing glasses has not been an issue until lately because of constraints within my professional career.

I am a petroleum engineer from Trinidad and Tobago, and am required to wear safety glasses as part of daily field operations.

Being a contemporary styled young man, I resented the use of those unsightly prescription safety glasses with side-shields, and the use of my regular prescription

glasses with pullover safety glasses was not a comfortable fit; nor was it convenient to wear my contact lenses daily in the field due to all the dust and debris that could get into my eyes and under my contact lenses. For me, the only solution was to have refractive surgery.

Referrals – Why Braverman I have been researching the technology of refractive surgery and a reputable centre and surgeon for sometime before making a decision. I was first referred to the Braverman Eye Center in Trinidad through my sister Michelle Campbell, by Barry Davis and then by Alicia Codrington. Miracles Happen At Luncheon

The Jewish Adoption and Foster Care Options (JAFCO) Aventura/North Miami Dade Chapter recently hosted their 2nd Annual Miracles Luncheon and program at the Turnberry Isle Resort & Club in Aventura. Proceeds from the event benefit abused and neglected children in South Florida.

In the tradition of Chanukah and festival of lights, guests were asked to bring a gift card or check to help fulfill a child’s holiday wish.

Before the anticipated luncheon, a spirited crowd, predominately composed of 200 women, flocked to an incredible holiday boutique offering a fine selection of handbags, jewelry, fashionable clothing, Judaic items and accessories.

“Our beautiful 5.6 acre Children’s Village is located in Sunrise that offers six group homes where mostly teenagers live in foster care. In addition, there is a 24hour emergency shelter The non-profit organization will help any child regardless of religion. We were started by the Jewish community but in a position to help any child in need,” said Rebecca Solomon, JAFCO spokesperson.

The North Dade chapter encompasses Aventura, Sunny Isles Beach, Golden Beach and North Miami Beach. “We have almost 1,000 members and we offer 5 exciting events during the year. This is the first time we are holding a fundraiser at Turnberry Resort and they are very accommodating,” said chapter president Miri Mazor.

The successful luncheon raised more than $100,000 including 5 new godparents where they welcome a child into the world and to Judaism emphasizing love and protection. A touching part of the program occurred when a Chanukah candle lighting ceremony took place where each candle represented an adoptive parent or a godparent who donated $1,800 or more a year.

“All the programs are free for the approximate 50 residents who live on the JAFCO campus. They can live there until the age of 21; thereafter, we help them move into their own apartment or dorm room if they are in college. In addition, we provide shelter for more than 300

“The children who stay in Weicholz Campus come from the tri-county. They do have parents; unfortunately, these kids are experiencing abuse and neglect. After a court process, they can become JAFCO children and continue to attend school,” said Mazor.

Typically a neighbor, rabbi or priest will contact the organization and mention that they know of a child in a dire situation. Rarely does a child call themselves and often a police officer will

intervene and take a young person to the group home. The children that do not qualify for foster care or adoption can stay on the campus in the group home.

Adding to the meaningful program, several mothers gave emotional speeches that brought tears revealing their child’s destitute life before adoption. Guest speaker Karen Marcus gave an illuminating lecture “Light One Candle, Change One Life” where she reminisced about her loving Lithuanian family that perished in the Holocaust along with being raised in South Africa.

Topical anesthetic drops are applied to the eye. The surgeon first uses a special Ziemer LDV femtosecond laser to create a thin layer of corneal tissue that can be folded back (a corneal flap). Then, another type of laser (an Allegretto Eye-Q excimer laser) is used to reshape the underlying cornea, painlessly.

After the excimer laser treatment, the corneal flap is repositioned and bonds back into place naturally. The corneal reshaping improves the focusing power of the cornea.

professional and courteous, readily responded to emails in a timely manner, and addressed all of my concerns, while being flexible and sensitive of my schedule as an international resident.

Screening (Pre-procedure care) I later scheduled an appointment, a free screening, to determine my suitability as a candidate for Lasik Refractive Surgery. I was happy when informed by Dr. Braverman, whom I met that day, that I was ideal. The screening process was very thorough, examining and reexamining quite a range of data parameters for each eye. I was also impressed by having met with Dr. Braverman at the end of the free screening process and prior to the surgical procedure. He spent time answering my questions. I was verbally walked through the procedure, such that there would be no surprises on the day of the surgery.

Refractive Procedure Experiences On the day of the refractive surgery, I was surprised to learn how short the surgical procedure would be. I thought it would take over an hour. Most of the time was spent in preparation, sterilizing around my eyes, applying anesthetic drops, and then calibrating the laser with my prescription data. The entire time in the surgery room for both eyes was only 20 minutes and without complications or major discomfort, which was aided by Dr. Braverman talking and verbally walking me through the process such that no surprises would be experienced.

The instrument was inserted to keep my eye lids open throughout the LASIK refractive procedure. Another instrument, the first of two lasers used, was then placed over the eye, and suction was formed, the equivalent of compressing swimming goggles around your eyes. The best thing I could do was to simply focus on the green fixation dot and relax while the corneal flap was being created with a laser cut. I was told that during this eleven second laser procedure that over three million tiny spots were laid down with the laser to gently create the flap necessary to do the rest of the LASIK procedure.

The second laser was then used and it took about 20 seconds to reshape the cornea. The eye was then inspected, flap replaced, and the entire procedure was repeated for the other eye.

Post procedural care My biggest post-procedural discomfort was the inability to use my cell phone for texting and emailing, and not watching television with my new 20/15 vision immediately after the surgery, since I had to keep my eyes closed for two hours to allow the flaps to settle in. The

In an atmosphere of merriment and good cheer, the City of Hallandale Beach recently hosted their family-style annual holiday celebration at The Village in Gulfstream Park where carnival rides brought excitement on the faces of children, Santa Claus posed with families and many enjoyed candy apples and cotton candy.

“This is the second year that the city is hosting the holiday celebration at The Village. Families can come out and enjoy an inexpensive evening of entertainment,” said director of Parks and Recreation Rebecca Munden-Correa.

Taking place at the northwest corner parking lot of the new shopping complex, this accommodating site gives families a chance to visit the carnival and also do their holiday shopping at many of the retail merchants, have dinner at a nice restaurant, and adults can visit the casino afterwards.

“In previous years, this event was held near the Publix Market and Mayor Joy Cooper would flip a switch and turn on all the holiday lights. We hope to continue the level of service because it is important to continue activities that our residents have become accustomed to and make the holiday season a joyful one,” said Commissioner Alex Lewy.
