If gift-giving isn’t your strong suit, occasions likeValentine’s Day are likely to bring on stress and worry, but procrastinating will only serve to elevate your unease.
Follow these steps to simplify your shopping, and while you may not come to love the task of finding the perfect gift, your loved one will undoubtedly appreciateyoureffort.
1. Browse for ideas online. Many retailers offer special promotions and gift idea sections on their websites, so finding inspiration can be as easy as visiting the sites of your loved one’s favorite stores. There are also dozens of articles online to help get the ideas flowing. Searches such as “gifts for horse lovers” or “Valentine’s gifts for a new boyfriend” will reveal a longlistofideastoperuse.
2. Keep it simple. Although the advertising industry works hard to convince consumers otherwise, Valentine’s Day isn’t really all about the bling. Sure, a pretty bauble is a welcome gift, but there are plenty of ways to show your affection that don’t require spending a month’s sal-
ary. A heartfelt card paired with a memento of a meaningful event or place in your relationship sends the same loving sentiment.
3. Make it a (different) date. For many couples, navigating the demands of work, kids and life make spending time together a luxury. Instead of fighting crowds at busy restaurants on the official date, celebrate your love on a day of your own choosing, when you can relax and enjoy the time together without the pressure to rush through dessert so your table canbeflippedforthenextwaitingcouple.
4. Give blooms a boost. A dozen long-stem red roses is a beautiful gesture, but unless your intended rose receiver is a strictly traditional type, try adding a little spice to your floral arrangement. Go for a bouquet in her favorite color, or have the flowers arranged in a practical vessel she can reuse to remember the occasion, such asacocktailshakerorawateringcan.
5. Go ahead, gift yourself. It may seem counter-intuitive, but finding a gift you’ll enjoy may inspire an idea for your
loved one. The trick is finding something you can share together, whether it’s tickets to a show or his and hers mugs for enjoying your favorite brew. Just be sure the item is something your intended will
share your enthusiasm for, or you may as wellgobuyablender.

So you take Ives Dairy Road each day and you notice a lot of construction happening in the area, sowhat’sgoingon?
The Florida Department Of Transportation (FDOT) started an intersection project along Northeast 203rd Street/Ives Dairy Road during the middle of November. The project will increase safety and ease traffic flow through this busy intersection by elevating westbound Northeast 203rd Street over the Florida East Coast Railway (FEC) tracks and West Dixie Highway, constructing a pedestrian bridge over the FEC tracks, widening the roadway along southbound US-1 and eastbound Northeast 203rd Street, including the bridge, improving drainage along the corridor, updating pedestrian ramps, signage, pavement markings, lighting and installing a bicycle lane along
West Dixie Highway, between Northeast 206th Street and Northeast202ndStreet.
Travel lanes shall be closed during non peak hours on nonevent days. Non Peak hours are: 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., weekdays - 10:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., weekends - 9:00 p.m. to 5:30 a.m., Monday through Sunday nights11:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m., Friday and Saturday nights. This project will require nighttime full intersection closures that will be noticed in advance and expected to be completed in the summer of2024.
Florida is home to over 22 million residents and in just the first three quarters of 2022, we had nearly 105 million visitors to our state and Aventura has certainly seen a large part of that growth. In 2022, Florida experienced the largest net migration in the country at 1.9%, meaning
that Florida’s infrastructure mustaccommodatemorepeople than ever before. The 20 projects included in the proposal will build more resilient Transportation Infrastructure, which is important to the integrity of roadways and corridors especially during severe weather eventssuchasHurricanes.
Due to this huge growth Governor Ron DeSantis recently announced the Moving Florida Forward Infrastructure Initiatives, a $4 Billion Investment, which will be leveraged for a total of $7 Billion, to expedite projects that will alleviate congestion and prioritize safety. “This proposal will break through bureaucracy that often slows down Infrastructure
Projects and allow FDOT to target projects that will ease congestion across the state,” said Governor Ron DeSantis. “Expediting these projects will bring them to completion more than a decade ahead of schedule.”
“Governor DeSantis’ Moving Florida Forward Proposal is truly historic and the projects included will help relieve congestion while also focusing on safety, resiliency, the supply chain and economic growth. These are important for Floridians’ quality of life and to ensure we maintain a strong transportation system to keep Florida moving forward,” said FDOT Secretary Jared W. Perdue, P.E. “The Department has
worked closely with communitiesandourpartnersthroughthe years to plan and prepare these projects for construction. Receiving this funding will allow the vision of each project to become a reality in the immediate future to better meet the growing demands in communities throughout the state. Our team is prepared and ready to work with the Legislature to deliver these critical projects and strengthen Florida’s TransportationInfrastructure.”
FDOT will continue working on projects currently planned in the existing FDOT Five-Year Work Program in addition to projects included in the Moving FloridaForwardpackage.

Join some of Miami’s top ceramic artists for a hands-on turn at the pottery wheel every Friday night in February! Watch or participate, it’s your choice, as potters from the Ceramic League of Miami work their magic on wheels installed in our streetside Bridge Tender House(JosephineBakerPavilion).
It will certainly be fine for everyone, no matter if you want to get hands deep in the action or just watch come and spend some time with some of Miami’s top ceramic artists at work on the pottery wheel! Inspired by Roberto Lugo’s Street Shrines exhibition and his dazzling array of ceramic work, we’re hosting a potterin-residence from the Ceramic League of Miami in our streetside Bridge Tender House (Josephine Baker Pavilion) each Friday evening in February, 10, 17, and 24 at 7–9pm. Pass by along Washington Avenue for a close-up look at throwing and get a chance to try your hand at the wheel—plus, stop in our Design Store to enjoy half-priced drink specials while you browse a pop-up selection of ceramics fromresidentpotters.
Throwing your own pottery as a hobby or for a business, can be a thoroughly rewarding experience. From vases through to bowls, the finished articles that you can create are many and varied. The key skill to master when creating your pottery piece is the use of your pottery wheel. Here is a step-by-step guide on howtouseapotterywheelforbeginners.
Step 1: Spin the wheel and slightly
moisten the center of your bat with your sponge.
Step 2: Place your clay on to the center of the bat in a gumdrop shape. Flatten the edges of the clay with the palm of your hand, turning the wheel manually until all sides are flattened down. Following this, use your index finger to press the edges of the clay, sealing the edge of the clay to the bat.
Step 3: Once you are satisfied that the clay is firmly in place, increase the speed of the wheel and put some water on to your hands. Before starting to manipulate the clay, ensure that your elbows are lockedtoyourlegs.
Step 4: Use your left hand to push the clay up (this is called coning up) and use your right hand as support. Use the palms of your hands to squeeze the clay inwards, allowing the clay to pop up between your hands. As the manipulated clay gets taller, maintainan‘A’shapewithyourthumbs.
Step 5: Following the coning up of your clay, you also need to cone down in order to center the clay and ensure that you can push the clay to where you need it to go. At this point you should add more water if needed. Place the fat part of your left thumb (where it meets the palm of your hand) directly on top of the center of the clay and place pressure away from you (not down on to the clay). The fingers
of your left hand should wrap gently aroundthefrontoftheclay.
Step 6: Your right hand should also be placed at the top of your clay but on the side and gently pushing the clay to the center. The fingers of your right hand should also be gently wrapped around the clay.
Step 7: Both hands should be pushed in the directions described above and then slowly slide your hands down the clay in tandem. At this point you should have created a ‘cone up’ position for your clay. Keep repeating this method, with more water if necessary, until the clay is centered. The best method of establishing whether the clay is centered is by placing your hands gently around the clay and slowly spinning the wheel. If your hands stay in place then your clay is centered, but if they move and wobble then you will needtorepeatmoreconing.
Step 8: At this point, you will start to form the size and shape of your pottery. Rest your hands on the sides of your clay, with the right thumb knuckle placed over the top of your left thumb knuckle, keepingyourthumbsparalleltothefloor.Press the top knuckle into the bottom in order to create a small divot in the top of the clay.
Step 9: To make the opening for your bowl, plate or vase, the next stage is called
drilling. Place your left thumb in the previously created divot and turn the wheel, waiting until your thumb is centered and not moving about. Use your right hand fingers to guide your left hand thumb downtowardsthebat.
Step 10: Now is the time to form your pottery! Insert the middle finger of your left hand into the divot. Put your right hand over the top of your left hand and slowly pull the clay back towards you to createyourdesiredshape.
Step 11: Once you are satisfied with your desired shape, you can also add different elements including a lip or handle, depending on what you are creating. You can also use a wooden rib to clean the insideandoutsideofthepot.
Step 12: To remove your pottery from the bat, place a taut wire on the far side of your piece and slowly slide the wire back towardsyou.
When learning how to use a pottery wheel, it’s all about practice so stop by the streetside Bridge Tender House (Josephine Baker Pavilion) each Friday evening in February, 10, 17, and 24 from 7–9pm to get in touch with your inner Demi Moore, because you just might find anewloveandhobby.Yourfirsteffortmay not be perfect, but the more time and patience you use, the more successful you willbe.

Located in the heart of Miami, Wynwood is the most eclectic neighborhood in the city and home to various popular nightlife locations— soon to include El Chinito Latino Bar, the newest addition to the Wynwood scene. El Chinito, whose doors will be opening in February, presents a new intimate bar that combines Latin and Asian cultures to create a unique environment for guests. Boasting the fresh tastes of their craft cocktails and fusion cuisine, this new venue plans to be a hotspot for locals and visitors alike. El Chinito will dive into an eclectic fountain of cultures—made up of influences from the diverse Asian diasporas of Latin America. The outcome is a celebration of the ardent spirit of fun where visitors will experience two full bars and a statement DJ booth decorated to resemble the Chinese “bodega” minimarts that fill the streets of Latin American Chinatown neighborhoods. The drink selection spans everything from cocktails and beers to full liquor bottle service. Outside, a patio lounge will roar to the cool sounds of Latin house, salsa funk, and popular Latin tunes unique to the Wynwood area, encouraging patrons to dance the night away. The surprising cocktail offerings feature extraordinary flavors that perfectly integrate the two culturesandtheirseveralvariations.
El Chinito’s innovative concept is brought by The Dirty Rabbit Group, a Miami-based hospitality group known for successfully combining exceptional dining, entertainment, and art in all their nightlife and culinary venues since 2017. Operating many bars, nightclubs, and restaurants already in the area, El Chinito’s addition allowsThe Dirty Rabbit Group to expand its presence within the Wynwood nightlife scene, incorporating yet another stapletothearea.
“Our objective in opening El Chinito Latino Bar is to give Miami a cool new place to unwind and party with a theme that celebrates the Asian-Latino culture and is both unique and nostalgic for our patrons,” says Luis Ginestra, CEO of The Dirty Rabbit Group. “The vibrant nightlife and mixture of crowds make the Wynwood Art District the ideal neighborhood to bring El Chinito Latino Bar to life.”
At first glance, patrons will be greeted by a large blue elephant, signifying strength, good fortune, and harmony in Asian cultures. The venue brings the Miami feel featuring contemporary décor,
walls adorned with framed pop art, lush greenery on the patio and state-of-the-art light and sound fixtures that are meant to elevate the bar experience. Additionally, guests will spot a few fun tributes to the character namesake “El Chinito” meaning littleChineseboyinSpanishslang.
The stars of the show are the handcrafted cocktails by Colombian mixologist, Vanessa Serrano who has worked in the industry for over 10 years applying her passion in discovering new blends, fruits, and herbs to the innovation of cocktail creation. The Passionsita combines tropical passion fruit, with lychee liqueur, vodka, vanilla, basil & simple syrup for a sweet and refreshing drink. Another favorite is What a Fortune Cookie—a unique twist on the classic Carajillo made with vodka, Licor 43, cream, coffee, and simple syrup. Also offered are crowdpleasers like the OaxaKitty - a mezcal based drink with guava, lime, yuzu, and simple syrup garnished with fresh pineapple and spices, served in a ManekiNeko cat cup, a Japanese figurine which depicts a Bobtail cat with its paw raised in a beckoning gesture and is believed to
bring good luck to its owner.Visitors looking to turn their night up to the next level can opt for liquor bottle service complete with an over-the-top bottle presentation paradethatissuretoturnheads.
Those looking to pair their drinks with a bit of food will be pleasantly surprised by El Chinito’s gastronomic offerings, created by Executive Chef Nicolas Caicedo, who has worked with The Dirty Rabbit Group since 2019. Caicedo’s focus for El Chinito is to curate a menu of shareable tapas. Some unique must-try plates will be the Ropa Vieja Fried Rice, which combines the Chinese staple and popular Cubandishwithhogao, roastedcorn, avocado, and topped with spicy mayo and a “sunny” fried egg; Chicken Al Pastor Bao Buns, a Mexican take on the popular Chinese dish where the interior is made up of crispy chicken, pineapple, green cabbage, and cilantro. Caicedo will also offer an innovative spin on fan-favorite Latin desserts like Churros con Lychee and Yuzu Panna Cotta. Less adventurous diners can find comfort in Chinese classics like spring rolls, fried rice, and sweet &sourororangechicken.
After his father’s premature death and his mother’s downward spiral into Acoholism, David Dennis was removed from the only home he’d ever known by Child Protective Services.Years later, his mother died in a house fire of her own making. Thetraumawasoverwhelming.
“After the very people on whom you most depend let you down, it’s difficult to imagine that any place can be safe,” Dennis wrote in the introduction to his new book, Gameness: Land On Your Feet, Not OnYourFeelings.
“Gameness, n. - The quality of mind enabling one to face danger or hardship resolutely: bravery, courage, fearlessness, fortitude, gallantry, heart, intrepidity, mettle, nerve, pluck, spirit, stoutheartedness, undauntedness, valiantness, valor.”
Through a newfound faith in God and an education in marriage and family counseling, Dennis was able to find a healthy detachment from his past trauma and start seeing his life as a potential to be real-
ized — not a problem to be solved. His personal and professional journeys revealed much about change, growth, purpose, of course, gameness and he shares what he learned betweenthecoversofhisbook.
Gameness is divided into four sections, each of which takes a deep dive into four defining characteristics of gameness and the choices people can make to live according to these attributes: Upgrade Your Perspective: A Never-Quit Mindset, Fulfill Your Potential: Resoluteness To A Purpose,TackleYour Problems: A Fighting Spirit And Master Your Performance: The Will Required to Act.
These aren’t academic concepts to Dennis. He has lived them, refined them and now, he’s sharing his valuable insights to help readers unlock the life-changing possibilities of developing a mindset of gameness.
“We will live each day in the face
of adversity that demands something of us,” Dennis said. “It’s this universal truth that makes gameness life’s most important attribute.”
David Dennis is the President and Chief Executive Officer of Eckerd Connects, one of the nation’s largest nonprofits providing Workforce Development, Job Corps, Juvenile Justice and Child Welfare Services across the country. He has earned certifications as a Licensed Professional Counselor, Marriage and Family Therapist and Child Care Administrator. You’d think the cost of renting an electric vehicle would be falling, with Tesla slashing the price of its cars by up to 20 percent last week. Not exactly. The EV premium is alive and well. Electric car rentals still cost roughly 20 percent more than gas-powered vehicles, according to a random sampling of prices I conducted. But there’s also a hidden cost of renting an EV that has shocked some travelers. It includes extras for charging the car or spending too much time at a charging station. The extras add up, making an EV rental a luxury for many travelers. In fact, smart drivers are turning down the opportunitytorentanelectricvehicle.
Joshua Folb did a double-take when Budget Car Rental recently sent him its updated terms. Buried deep in the fine print was a requirement that EVs have to be returned more than 70 percent charged or face a $35 fee. If it’s less than 10 percent, it’s $70. “I wonder what the other car rental companies are doing,” says Folb, who works for a nonprofit organizationinArlington,VA
Well, wonder no more. Avis, which owns Budget, has an identical policy. Hertz has a complicated set of EV fees that include charging, controversial “idle” fees and the costs of any damaged charging cable. Enterprise doesn’t have any EV charging fees, and Sixt actually rewards you for recharging your car with a voucher.
“When renting an EV, renters need to be aware of any additional charging fees that may be required post-rental,” explains Erin Kemp, a consumer advocate forthecarsiteBumper.
Kemp has seen charging fees ranging from $15 to $50 or more, depending on the rental company and the battery. He says car rental customers should think of it as a supercharged refueling fee. Car rental companies charge about three times as much as the market rate to top offanEVwithalowbattery.
Charging more for an EV and adding hidden fees is a bizarre business practice, considering that car rental companies are tryingtogetmorepeopletorentanEV.
Drivers are revolted by these EV fees
Callum Russell rented a Nissan Ariya on a recent visit to California. The daily rate of $50 was reasonable -- but that was beforethefees.
The company added fees of $35 for EV
pay another fee. “The charging fee was much more than if I had used a public charging port,” says Russell, who runs a siteaboutEVcharging.
Daniel Carr had a similar experience when he priced cars for a one-week rental.
“The car options that were electric were overpriced,” says Carr, who publishes an automotive blog. “I think they are taking advantage of the fact that it’s a new technology, and know that if you want to pick an EV over a gas-powered car, they can take advantage of your moral preferenceforusinganEV.”
He went with a gas-powered car.
Richard Wong, a government worker fromWashington, D.C., tried to rent an EV in San Francisco during the holiday. The price tag, after all the surcharges, came to morethan$100perday.He’soutraged.
“I don’t know how they can justify the greater expense if we’re paying for the electricity and they’re probably receiving government incentives like tax breaks or outright subsidies for buying electric vehicles,”hesays.
Wong also went with a conventional vehicle.
Scrap your assumptions about EVs before you rent one, say experts. You
oftentrue.
“Be sure to ask,” says Andrew Krulewitz, CEO of Zevvy, the electric vehicleleasingcompany.
Every rental company seems to have a different policy on charging. Some will allow you to return the vehicle without a charge and won’t make you pay extra. Others will start charging a fee if you return the car with less than 70 percent charge on the battery, and they’ll punish you with even steeper fees if you go under 10 percent. “You may pay significantly above what it would cost to charge up the car,”saysKrulewitz.
Charging fees are not the only “gotchas.” Renters have reported other extras, like idle fees (for overstaying your welcome at a charging station) and additional surcharges if your battery level dips below 10 percent. Also, knowing the car rental industry like I do, it’s only a matter of time before they invent another fee and quietly add it to their terms and conditions.
Can you recharge?
The problem with a recharging fee is that it’s often impractical to top off a vehicle before returning it, according to Phil
anager for Rhino Car. “With a regular car, customers can port to top up at the expense of 5 to 10 minutes,” he says. “But the forward planning required to leave enough time to recharge the rental car -- up to an hour or more! -- could add unwanted time and stress to the rental return, which is already a rather nervy affair to many.” How true. And in some locations, a charging station may be limited. That’s somethingtothinkaboutbeforeyourentanEV.
These fees are ridiculous
If the idea behind adding EVs is to save the environment, then most car rental companies are going about it the wrong way.
They’re charging an EV premium -theyshouldbeofferingadiscount.
They’re adding fees for charging the battery -- they should be offering vouchers for returning the vehicle with a full charge(likeSixt).
They’re adding hidden fees and extra expenses -- they should be removing them.
So when I see reports of hundreds of Teslas sitting idle in Hertz parking lot, I’m not surprised. Some car rental companies see EVs as a profit opportunity, and they are hoping our conscience will push us to pay more and tolerate these junk fees so wecansavetheenvironment.
We may be worried about climate change, butwe’renotthatstupid.
