Cancer is defined as the uncontrollable growth of cells that invade and cause damage to surrounding tissue. Oral cancer appears as a growth or sore in the mouth that does not go away. Oral cancer, which includes cancers of the lips, tongue, cheeks, floor of the mouth, hard and soft palate, sinuses, and pharynx (throat), can be life threatening if not diagnosed and treated early.

WHO GETS ORAL CANCER? According to the American Cancer Society, men face twice the risk of developing oral cancer as women, and men who are over age 50 face the greatest risk. It's estimated that over 40,000 people in the U.S. received a diagnosis of oral cancer in 2014.

Risk factors for the development of oral cancer include: • Smoking . Cigarette, cigar, or pipe smokers are six times more likely than nonsmokers to develop oral cancers.

• Smokeless tobacco users. Users of dip, snuff, or chewing tobacco products are 50 times more likely to develop cancers of the cheek, gums, and lining of the lips.

• Excessive consumption of alcohol. Oral cancers are about six times more common in drinkers than in nondrinkers.

• Family history of cancer.

• Excessive sun exposure, especially at a young age.

• Human papillomavirus (HPV). Certain HPV strains are etiologic risk factors for Oropharyngeal Squamous Cell Carcinoma (OSCC) It is important to note that over 25% of all oral cancers occur in people who do not smoke and who only drink alcohol occasionally.

WHAT IS THE OUTLOOK FOR PEOPLE WITH ORAL CANCER? The overall 1-year survival rate for patients with all stages of oral cavity and pharynx cancers is 81%. The 5and 10-year survival rates are 56% and 41%,

HOW IS ORAL CANCER DIAGNOSED? As part of your routine dental exam, your dentist will conduct an oral cancer screening exam. More specifically, your dentist will feel for any lumps or irregular tissue changes in your neck, head, face, and oral cavity.

When examining your mouth, your dentist will look for any sores or discolored tissue as well as check for any signs and symptoms mentioned above.

Your dentist may perform an oral brush biopsy if he or she sees tissue in your mouth that looks suspicious.

This test is painless and involves taking a small sample of the tissue and analyzing it for abnormal cells. Alternatively, if the tissue looks more suspicious, your dentist may recommend a scalpel biopsy.

This procedure usually requires local anesthesia and may be performed by your dentist or a specialist. These tests are necessary to detect oral cancer early, before it has had a chance to progress and spread.

HOW IS ORAL CANCER TREATED? Oral cancer is treated the same way many other cancers are treated -- with surgery to remove the cancerous growth, followed by radiation therapy and/or chemotherapy (drug treatments) to destroy any remaining cancer cells.

WHAT CAN I DO TO PREVENT ORAL CANCER? To prevent oral cancer: • Don't smoke or use any tobacco products and drink alcohol in moderation (and refrain from binge drinking).

• Eat a well balanced diet.

• Limit your exposure to the sun. Repeated exposure increases the risk of cancer on the lip, especially the lower lip. When in the sun, use UV-A/B-blocking sun protective lotions on your skin, as well as your lips.

Could Dixie Highway become a two-way road?

By Mayor Joy Cooper HALLANDALE BEACH - A few weeks ago, I wrote an article about the FEC Quiet Zones and Diana Drive re-design. Construction is complete along the FEC. In June, there will be no left turns allowed at railroad crossings. The alternative right turns will be marked. As a follow up to that article, I wanted to let our readers know that we have sent a letter to Commissioner Beam Furr requesting that the county consider converting Dixie Highway into a two-way road. While it is called Dixie Corridor, many people think Dixie is on both sides. The eastern side is 1st Avenue and the western side is Dixie. This would allow for better access and may help with the removal of the left turns.

I will keep you updated on this request.

Diana Drive will be going through design and then will go out to bid. Nothing has changed with the resolution of the commission to ensure that all current parking that exists today will remain with a goal of adding more on street sidewalks and keeping two lanes of traffic on the residential side of the street and a one way heading west on the commercial side.

For those readers that did not catch the article, much of this parking is being used by the condominiums. Some of the older buildings were not designed with even

enough parking for one vehicle per unit. If the parking would be removed there would be a huge deficit. Residents that attended the meeting were relieved with the resolution. As an update, Commissioner London at a following meeting requested to have his vote change to a no vote. He never stated why. The original motion still stands as passed, 4-1.

As our readers know, our commission and staff have been looking at ways to address traffic. Most of our roads are built out and we have limited alternatives to address capacity.

Traffic is everyone’s issue. Every commissioner agreed, it is a top priority. The question becomes if it truly is the top priority, when will we all be willing to stand up and make our words translate into a reality?

One road that was proposed was the Diana Drive extension. This vision included creating an east/west road to Federal. Ironically if this road and many others were built back in the 50's and 60’s, Hallandale Beach Boulevard would have not turned into the only road in and out of our city. The portion of this road behind Publix between Layne and 14th was built back when I was first elected. So that is why I continue to ask the question, if not now, when? The opportunity is now, since there are many redevelopments taking place.

This road would address capacity by reducing congestion by over 15% and most importantly give us an alternate route for our emergency vehicles.

The road was placed on the MPO unfunded list, but funding never became a reality. We needed additional right of way and FDOT was not funding ROW purchases.There were also no the redevelopment plans back then to support funding.

Over the past years, we have moved forward on acquiring easements through developer agreements. To date, everyone wishing to develop has granted an easement. Regretfully, the only holdout has been Gulfstream Park.

During the land use application for the Village, this road was discussed, however, that application was not for the agricultural portion and other items on Federal were implemented for traffic management.

After hearing of the desire for a road, what happened next was blatantly in direct conflict.

They built their dorms in what could be the road.

The city has no zoning control over agricultural land at the track. Permits are required, but we can only regulate life safety issues. Our city staff had an outside engineer evaluate an alternative for the road and found it can be built but we still need easement.

Last month, we had a chance to require them

to grant a five-foot easement along the north border between 10th and Federal. The adjacent property owner to the north had granted the rest. Staff recommended approval of plat amendment with the 5foot ROW. The commission removed the requirement. I vote against the plat due to this fact. It was for 5 feet and this road will not just help our City, but Gulfstream too.

Staff has invested a lot of time in addressing this number one priority.

After the plat hearing, they placed on the agenda an item to see if the commission was even interested in pursuing the road in its entirety. It cannot be built without the easements.

The question has now become now or never. If we want the road, we can wait until GP decides they want to grant the easement, which is highly unlikely, or continue negotiations with all alternatives on the table including possible eminent domain action. I was very vocal in pressing us to peruse the latter.

Vice Mayor Julian supported moving forward and granting the City Manager his request to negotiate including eminent domain. Two other commissioners wanted the road but were unwilling to grant what the City Manager was asking for, the ability to negotiate with some teeth.

After a lengthy debate on the motion, it was

clear it was going to fail.

I requested we at best continue to grant the City Manager the ability to further evaluate all alternatives and bring back an item for approval of funds to complete our own evaluation of the overall costs alternative ROW designs.

GF park was asked about their studies and if they would work with our staff. To date, we have not received any responses. At best, there have been continued discussions about this road with them over 6 months.

I will keep our readers informed on this very important issue. We are also looking at other

roads to complete or to add capacity.

In a world where many have their own problems to worry about, just surviving the daily grind, cancer has been, for millions, a source of personal goals to beat this dreaded disease, and nobody can understand what a cancer patient is going through like someone who has lived it.

April McCauley has been attending these events for 10 years. She remembers when the relays were getting off the ground for the first time and how much effort went into it. But as the dust has settled on the mega exposure that was initially put into the Relay For Life events, things have faded, leaving those close to cancer to continue to step up and keep the awareness going.

For 12 hours last Saturday, the City of Hollywood opened its doors and the ArtsPark for the 2016 event that made “Surfin’ For A Cure” the key phrase join this beautiful spring event.

As team captains came to keep the fundraising and awareness in the spotlight, Lisa Covington and her impressive group put on a great event.

“I remember when we went to one of these about nine years ago in Pembroke Pines and there were like 5,000 people,” McCauley said.

“Back then, just to be a

part of what was something unique for such a serious and rarely talked about disease, was really needed.”

McCauley has been a caregiver for her parents over the years.

Both had cancer and she was around to be there back when there was very little publicity.

Both passed before 2000, and nobody knows the suffering and the ongoing mental anguish like she does. She battled doctors, treatment and was there for everything that went along with the disease.

“The toughest part in the world is to see anyone have to suffer with cancer, but when it’s your own flesh and blood, it wrenches your heart and mind in directions that you never felt before,” McCauley said.

“Before the awareness of this disease, you had to stand up for yourself.

There were very few support groups like they have now who were there during the tough times.”

McCauley knew what every person at ArtsPark - patient and caregiver, was going through on Saturday as she spent time giving back and making purchases that would go directly to the continued research for a cure. She also watched as cancer survivors came out for the moral support.

“These people are grateful for the monies being donated, but just sitting down with them, and knowing what they go through mentally,

Panic Disorder can be successfully treated Q: What is effective for treating Panic Disorder?

T.M.., Miami A: Panic Disorder is a particularly painful condition marked by uncomfortable sympathetic nervous system responses. We all have what is called a “fight or flee” mechanism that originates in a part of our brain called the hypothalamus. This mechanism is triggered when encountering a real danger or threat, and stimulates our body’s ability to either fight or flee from the threat. But in panic disorder a false alarm is triggered. The results are a variety of unpleasant bodily reactions, which may include excessive sweating, heart palpitations, high blood pressure, headache, dissociation, dizziness, and other uncomfortable bodily sensations. People experiencing their first attack will often check themselves into hospital emergency rooms, fearful they are having a heart attack or are losing their minds. Most often neither is occurring.

In some severe cases a panic sufferer may become fearful of leaving home and entering public places; a condition called agoraphobia.

Both medication and psychotherapy report success in treating panic disorder. SSRI anti-depressant drugs such as Prozac, Zoloft & Paxil are frequently prescribed for this condition, but from my observation often falls short of satisfactory symptom relief. A class of drugs known as benzodiazepines, (such as xanax, ativan, valium and klonapine), are much more immediately effective, and can serve as a great relief to panic sufferer.

But if taken over prolonged periods of time, these drugs can lead to drug-tolerance and addiction.

When attempting discontinuation, withdrawal may be nasty and prolonged. Consult a good medical doctor on all drug-taking considerations.

It is the behavioral & cognitive psychotherapies, many studies indicate, that lead to long term alleviation of symptoms. Psycho-therapeutic approaches include relaxation exercises, training to minimize an attack right from the onset, challenging irrational, negative, and catastrophic thinking, & actual exposure to the settings that may provoke an attack.

Perceptual reconstruction is often the key for beating panic disorder. For example, sensations elicited by a roller coaster ride are perceived as enjoyable, but these sensations are very similar to the symptoms expressed in a panic attack. In the former condition the mind perceives the sensations as fun, in the latter, a horror to be avoided.

Perception often makes all the difference.

If it brings you any comfort or relief, know that panic disorder is often successfully treated. Seek professional help with someone experienced in this disorder. Don’t expect miracles overnight, but rather focus on slow, but steady gains. Don’t let set-backs get you down. Set-backs are part of the road to recovery. .. Good Luck TM. Indeed, while crowds have diminished, the passion for those who hosted these events across the country has not. These are not 12 hour fundraisers put on at the last moment.

Covington, Dawn Gruber, Kevin Biederman, Karl Chuck, Debbi Golden, John Gronvold, Anne Hotte, Alicia Hubbard, Fayette Katz, Daniel Mell, Ana Minerva, Katherine Pfrogner, Carie Anne Pfrogner and Wilton Nisbeth have worked extremely hard to plan everything out - and that is a huge undertaking.

While several youngsters take part in the event each year - and made a huge impact once again in Hollywood - many believe that the success of the future for Relay For Life depends on the youngsters of today to carry it on.

“I feel that making middle and high school age kids aware of cancer will only help the understanding and what entire families go through,” said two-time cancer survivor Raye Ortiz, who lives in Dania Beach. “Today’s kids are more understanding to causes and to diseases than we were in the 60s and 70s. My granddaughter is here today because she is performing with the Renaissance Dance team.”

This year’s event

started with opening ceremonies as well as a survivor reception and luncheon, teams relaying around the track,

the Pines Charter High School drum line, Surf Bandits Band, the traditional Luminaria ceremony, Electric Arrow Band, Zumba with Carlos and plenty of events that went on throughout the day.

Bringing great foods to the table for Passover GEFILTE FISH AND HORSERADISH MOLD 2 jars (24 ounce each) prepared gefilte fish balls 3-ounce box of lemon gelatin 1 cup boiling water 1 cup jarred fish broth, heated in a microwave for 1 minute 6-ounce jar of red horseradish, drained of excess liquid 1 carrot, sliced and cooked for garnish (optional) 2 scallions or chives for garnish (optional) Place the gefilte fish (sans liquid) in a large, shallow casserole or rimmed serving dish.

Put the lemon gelatin in a medium sized bowl.

Add boiling water and stir for about 2 minutes, until it has dissolved.

Add the fish broth and horseradish. Stir until well blended.

Pour the liquid mixture around the gefilte fish pieces, reserving 1⁄4 cup if you are garnishing the gefilte fish.

To garnish the fish with a decorative flower, slice the carrot into 1⁄8-inch circles and use a tiny flower-shaped cutter or a knife to shape each circle. If you wish to cre-

Add warm water to cover and set aside to soak for 1 hour.

Preheat the oven to 375°F. Lightly butter a 9 x 13-inch baking dish.

Bring a large pot of salted water to boiling over high heat; stir in the noodles and cook for 6 minutes. Drain the noodles in a colander and transfer to a large bowl.

Pour in the butter and toss until the noodles are coated.

Mix the cottage cheese, crème fraîche, eggs, and vanilla in a medium bowl; stir in the sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Add to the noodles and stir until combined; stir in the raisins.

Spoon the noodle mixture into the prepared baking dish. Bake until the filling is set and the top is golden brown—30 to 45 minutes.

Plywood Regatta in Dania Beach raises $10,000 to help build boating’s future DANIA BEACH – More than 300 local students picked up power tools and built and raced boats, gaining valuable skills and exposure to the marine industry during the 20th annual Plywood Regatta on Saturday and Sunday, April 9 and 10 at the Dania Beach Marina.

Over $10,000 was raised toward scholarships at the two-day boat building and racing event, a team-building event that is organized by the Marine Industries Association of South Florida and introduces local youth and the community to both the excitement and career opportunities associated with recreational boating.

proceeds benefit South Florida’s marine industry education programs and the Plywood Regatta Scholarship Fund, which benefit students pursuing advanced education in the marine trades.
