Great News For College Grads There Are More Jobs Available This Year Than In The Past

ceived her degree in Business Administration.

Four years and plenty of hard work went along with two summer internships and the belief that

you get out what you put in.

Despite plenty of resume sending and letter writing - along with those positive experiences -

Doughty remains in limbo about starting a career in a very competitive workforce.

“I know that from watching people older

than me that things will work out,” she said. “My very best friend graduated in 2017 with a degree in communications and she is working at a

restaurant right now helping to pay off student loans and provide a living for herself. My boyfriend also graduated two years ago with a degree in finance and he is working in retail.”

But there is indeed good news on the horizon - and no matter what your field happens to be those armed with a newly minted diploma will enter a job market with unemployment near the lowest level in 50 years and job prospects up significantly from just last year.

‘Normie’ Was Indeed One Special Man

Local Realtor Norman Raven Touched So Many Lives - Worldwide

Talk about the real estate market and Norman Raven could go on for hours.

On May 3, at the age of 69, the man who was admired and adored by many, suddenly passed away - and the shock waves were felt from the United Kingdom, to Europe and here in south Florida.

The man who was up front, charming and very witty - and had established himself as someone who clients could trust for over five decades - passed way too soon, and the news was met with so much sadness from those close to him.

As part of the highly successful Raven Team - Sue Ward Homes, Inc. where he and longtime associate and close friend Debbie Finke brought over 80 years of combined experience in the competitive real estate market, Norman Raven was indeed that dose of reality at a time when many needed that pick-meup.

Born on March 27, 1950, Raven’s passion for travel and always looking for the best in people, his passing while vacationing in Spain was felt by those close friends and family members, who were always close.

“Normie will be in our hearts every day and we will never forget how kind hearted he was to everyone he knew. He always fought for the underdog - and found that silver lining that has not always been easy - in the real estate market.”

“Student loans will never go away, no matter how many promises are made by current politicians who are posturing for the 2020 election,” Cruz pointed out. “With the high cost of getting an education, loans will always be in place, but there are ways to cut costs and be creative.”

Another Productive Week In Hallandale Beach

It has been another great week in the City of Hallandale Beach, hosting the Safe Kids International Bike to School Day, the grand opening of Orange Theory Fitness Studio at 419 N Federal Hwy., Suite 107 and a salute to Mrs. Mazie Ford, who has proved that age is nothing but a number. Not only was she the oldest resident in Hallandale but in the entire state of Florida. At the splendid age of 113 years old, Mrs. Ford lived a long and active life. She gave new meaning to the term aging gracefully. Mrs. Ford called Hallandale Beach home before her passing last week.

By Mayor Joy Adams It has been another great week in the City of Hallandale Beach. I am delighted to be a part of a great community. This past week on May 15th the city hosted the Safe Kids International Bike to School Day. Sponsored by the Development Services Department, Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital, and Safe Kids Broward, along with Gulfstream Academy and the Hallandale Beach Police Department. Over one hundred kids participated in this grand event.

The Police Department and I used this occasion to stress the importance of Bike Safety, as children learned how to travel safely to their neighboring schools. Free helmets and a host of other giveaways were donated to the participants who participated. I truly believe that ‘Bike to School Day’ proved to be an excellent opportunity for the city to promote bike safety for the entire community. In addition to this event the Parks department will continue the giveaway with free items such as helmets and bike reflectors at Foster and OB Johnson Park. Since May is National Bike month, what a fitting way to celebrate.

This week May 19-25, 2019 is the 45th annual National Emergency Medical Services Week. We take this time to celebrate our EMS practitioners and the important work they do in our community. NAEMT along with American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) lead an informational fun filled week with respect to safeguarding the health, safety and wellbeing of our communities. EMS week is the perfect time to recognize EMS and all its practitionerS. Friday, May 24, 2019, is deemed to be EMS Recognition Day so if you see an EMS worker give them a handshake to show appreciation for the hard work they contribute.

I look forward to hearing and seeing you at our next commission meeting on June 5th at 5:30pm in the Commission Chambers or at our next city event.

‘My Life Matters’ - Hallandale Beach PAL Cares About Bullying

By Stephen Cummings The act of bullying has become so pervasive that it is recognized as a leading cause of suicide among our youth.

The city of Hallandale Beach refuses to remain oblivious as the Police Athletic League organized a symposium aptly named “My Life Matters” promoting a theme of anti- bullying and anti- violence hosting 140 local children at OB Johnson Park last Saturday, May 18th where local rap artists, speakers and victims of bullying shared their thoughts and solutions during breakout sessions.

The children were stunned when Ben McNamee revealed that he was a typical college student attending Florida A&M University when an impish fraternity initiation ritual almost landed him in prison for 21 years for manslaughter killing his good friend.

Fraternities have long been chastised for hazing activities that are life threatening such as excessive drinking or sleep deprivation and on this one occasion, the fraternity brothers decided to “jump in” their newest member beating him accidentally to death.

McNamee was one of 13 co-defendants and after exhausting the legal process and cooperating with the authorities was finally granted probation for ten years.

He felt remorseful at his poor choice not to discourage the act and was ashamed of his weakness

of character among his peers.

Crystal Hayes was a featured speaker who stressed the need to understand why people bully.

Most bullies have been victims themselves and are acting out their aggression. Hayes was raised in the blighted section of Miami known as Liberty City, but came from a family with strong moral character and was forced to dress appropriately and attend church. Resultingly, she was a victim and explained that “hurt people hurt people.”

As she surveyed a classroom filled exclusively with young ladies ranging in ages from 7 through 17, it became apparent that all the attendees were victims of bullying either physically, verbally or through cyber bullying. Most girls were resolved to settle their differences with their fists, but after the exchange, they learned that speaking with a bully one on one and offering assistance for their anger is a viable solution.

A child must feel self-confident and stand their position when bullied, but try to walk away when possible and not escalate. It is very important for adults and children to be intolerant when they witness the act of bullying and intervene by telling a teacher, parent or an authority figure. Ignoring the problem contributes to the unwanted perpetuation.

spoke about their troubled pasts growing up. They reiterated the importance of making good choices and not succumbing to peer pressure. Most bullies partner in larger groups to intimidate and consequently can lead to criminal activities that usually end three ways; prison, hospital or death.

Tiffany Prince is a local author of children’s books encouraging imagination and emphasizing to our youth at a young age that they can aspire to whatever profession that they desire through hard work and perseverance. She had a child who was a victim of bullying in kindergarten and composed a series of books creating a character that dealt with bullying. Hallandale Beach Police Athletic League Program Director, Jonathan Carrillo is grateful to fellow PAL employee Robert Flagg who coordinated the program and Kiwanis member Kenny Cohan who shared the notion of an anti-bullying program with Jonathan and provided beautiful t-shirts commemorating the event.

Grilling Some Favorites For Memorial Day

As the summer is just a month away, Memorial Day often serves as a time when we start getting outside and treat the family to some delicious foods that come off the grill.

Instead of just heading out on Monday - many are enjoying the entire weekend, and we have some favorites for you to try. Be safe and enjoy!

GRILLED MARINATED LAMB CHOPS • 3 large garlic cloves, minced • 2 tablespoon chopped fresh rosemary • 1/4 cup olive oil • Sea salt and freshly ground pepper, to taste • 8 to 12 lamb rib chops, trimmed of fat • Lemon slices for garnish (optional)

In a small bowl, stir together the garlic, rosemary, olive oil and a few grinds of pepper. Place the lamb chops in a shallow dish and brush them with the olive oil mixture, coating both sides. Cover and refrigerate for at least 2 hours or up to overnight.

Prepare a hot fire in a grill and oil the grill rack. You can also do this with a hot pan.

Using tongs, place the chops over the hottest part of the fire or directly over the heat elements and grill, turning once, until browned and crisp on the exterior and medium-rare at the center when tested with a knife, 7 to

10 minutes total.

Transfer the chops to warmed plates and sprinkle with salt. Garnish with the lemon slices and serve immediately. Serves 4.

HAWAIIAN GRILLED CHICKEN • 1 cup unsweetened pineapple juice • 3/4 cup ketchup • 1/2 cup low-sodium soy sauce • 1/2 cup brown sugar • 2 cloves garlic, minced • 1 tablespoon freshly grated ginger • 1 pound boneless skinless chicken breasts • 1 pineapple, sliced into rings and halved • 1 teaspoon canola oil • Green onions, for garnish

Make Marinade: In a large bowl, combine pineapple juice, ketchup, soy sauce, brown sugar, garlic and ginger and whisk until combined.

Add chicken to a large Ziploc bag or baking dish and pour over marinade. Let marinate in the refrigerator at least 3 hours and up to overnight.

When ready to grill, heat grill to high. Oil grates and add chicken. Baste with marinade and grill until charred, 8 minutes per side.

Toss pineapple with oil and grill until charred, 2 minutes.

Serve chicken with pineapple and garnish with green onions.

TERIYAKI STEAK STIR FRY • 1 pound top round steak • kosher salt • Freshly ground black pepper • 1/4 cup teriyaki sauce • 2 cloves garlic, minced • 2 teaspoon freshly ground ginger • 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper • 1 tablespoon canola oil • 2 bell peppers, diced • 3 cup baby spinach

Marinate steak: In a baking dish, season steak with salt and pepper, then add teriyaki sauce, garlic, ginger, and cayenne. Transfer to the fridge and let marinate, 30 minutes.

When ready to cook, heat oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add steak and cook, undisturbed, 6 minutes, then flip and cook 4 minutes more or until steak reaches your desired doneness. Transfer to a cutting board to let rest, then slice.

Drain all but a tablespoon of fat from skillet. Add peppers and cook until soft, 4 minutes, then return steak to skillet and add spinach, tossing until wilted.

“Normie will be in our hearts every day and we will never forget how kind hearted he was to everyone he knew,” Finke said. “He always fought for the underdog - and found that silver lining that has not always been easy - in a real estate market.”

Raven, who had been in the industry for 49 years, continued to have more domestic and foreign real estate experience than anyone you will find.

When the South Florida Sun Times spoke with Raven this past December, he talked about the real estate market in a way only a positive and optimistic person could.

“In the past, rumors have circulated about the market being stale, but we don’t think that’s the case,” Raven pointed out. “Look around, there are new properties going up all the time. You learn to be creative and understand that finding a south Florida location for the value you still can get, is like no other place, anywhere.”

The important thing to understand is that even when there are obstacles standing in the way, Norman and Debbie continued to find creative ways to keep their clients satisfied.

When it came to international property, Raven had that firsthand experience - as someone who continued to travel throughout Europe, mostly in Spain and the United Kingdom - telling clients and those who would listen about the best deals and what properties/locations were hot.

Because of his love for south Florida, having a home in Pembroke Pines, and working with Finke for over two decades as part of the highly successful Raven Team, there was so much respect for knowing all about the market, following current trends and staying ahead of the competition.

“Our success was based on the fact that we cared and worked around the clock to make our clients happy,” Finke explained. “Both Norman and I had clients and repeat clients who we placed in that perfect home or property - and that is something that we both cherished and remembered always.”
