An All-Star experience
Not just the City of Miami benefited from hosting the week-long baseball event By Larry Blustein sfsuntimes@aol.com Miami – When the City of Miami bids on any enormous athletic event, it is done with all of South Florida in mind. This past week has been the culmination of years and years of planning and setting the stage for the world to watch. When Miami was awarded this 2017 Major League All-Star event, it was with Miami-Dade and Broward Counties in mind. Let’s face it, the
days of Broward being the little brother are over – and with cities such as Fort Lauderdale, Hollywood and Pembroke Pines, the stakes have gone up with well over a million residents. “What it does for us here in Hollywood, is attract many of those who spill over from Miami and other areas,” said charter boat captain Larry Timmons of Dania Beach. “We had customers all weekend, in anticipation of the game – and it was
like December and January all over again.” As many had to adjust their schedules for this gala event that was designed to include all of this region – and not just Downtown Miami and surrounding areas – it was done with a smiling face. Heavier business when there is usually little business at all. Many who helped to bid on bringing the game for the first time to Miami,

Rescued Sea Turtle Calls Hollywood Beach Home Hollywood - Located along Hollywood’s beautiful beach, the Marine Environmental Education Center (MEEC) at the Carpenter House in Hollywood’s North Beach neighborhood opened earlier this year with the desire to educate and delight locals and tourists about our sea turtle conservation and the coastal environment. As home to a rescued green sea turtle named Captain, the MEEC allows visitors to view Captain as she glides gracefully around her saltwater pool. You can even witness her daily feedings of lettuce and cucumbers in the mid-morning and mid-afternoon. The center is open to the public Tues. – Sat. from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and features
an interactive Interpretive Center with displays on topics ranging from sea turtle conservation to marine debris. Additionally, the Center offers programs for the public on various coastal ecology and sea turtle topics, as well as programming specifically for school groups with a curriculum tailored to the marine sciences. Recently, video crews from the City of Hollywood’s Office of Public Affairs and Marketing visited the Center and compiled a video that introduces the public to this new environmental education resource in the city.
