Zika gets our attention

By Larry Blustein @sfsuntimes@aol.com Carol Lakotis works in her garden several times a week. While trimming hedges or pulling weeds, the Hollywood resident is often bitten by several mosquitoes. Nothing she ever worried about before. Times have changed, and while this isn’t a push the panic button time, the Zika virus that has worked its way into Wynwood (Miami) and other areas of south Florida, is indeed something to start taking extra precaution over.

“Now, you never know what that that next bite could mean,” said Lakotis, who is four months pregnant. “This is my signal to slow things down a bit. We just never had to worry about something like this.” Indeed, south Florida has never had something like this that could potentially affect so many. Zika is dangerous and has been in the news, locally for the past month. Lakotis, a mother of two, is not in the mood to tempt fate, leaving outside activities to the spring and not so much right now – when the threat of the disease could affect her unborn child. “We are always told, as youngsters growing up that mosquitoes can carry plenty of diseases,” Lakotis explained. “But you never pay a lot of attention to it.” For Carole Martinez of Dania Beach, who was married in the past year and planning to start a family soon, this is

Diabetes is a very deceptive disease with some surprising statistics. It affects approximately 25.8 million people, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and one-third of people with diabetes have severe periodontal (gum) disease. Periodontal disease in diabetic patients can ultimately result in the loss of one or more teeth. In fact, the American Dental Association published a recent study that linked one in five cases of total tooth loss to diabetes.
