Hurricane Season - What Did We Learn?

Even though it could have been a lot worse, this storm season sent some messages

In the face of the terrible loss of life, infrastructure, economy and resources from the 2017 hurricane season, we can learn from the destruction. The impacts of disasters are a combination of a hazard’s ferocity and community preparedness for the event.

For some, the past six months have been a tougher time than usual - and with Hurricane Irma rolling ashore on the southwest coast of Florida - this area was not totally spared. While it could have been worse much worse - there were many things learned since June 1, and those valuable lessons will go a long way into the future. For Angela Thompson, this has been a tough year for someone who moved to

Hallandale Beach just seven months ago. Living on the beach, she had to evacuate and spend a few days in a shelter. That experience certainly will have her ready for 2018. Growing up in rural Minnesota, Thompson and her family had a number of power outages and severe winter storms. But her time in Florida was much different. Having to evacuate a dwelling was never part of the plan back home - and being a newcomer, riding out her first storm was an experience. “What we were taught back home and I’m sure they do it here, is to prepare,” Thompson pointed out. “I got the Hurricane, Page 3A
