By Larry Blustein sfsuntimes@aol.com Dania Beach - For years, the mention of Dania Beach conjured up thoughts of a small town, a fishing pier and an antique district that was moments away from the airport.

Known in the early years for the vast tomato fields and open spaces in this community that hugs the Atlantic Ocean, things have started to progress.

Even with its small town values, Dania Beach has given into progress.

While it remains quaint and still gives hope to many “mom and pop” businesses, there is a new identity to Mayor Tamara James and her growing community. This is one of the true communities that has found a perfect balance between corporate and the familyowned corner store. In the past two years, it has

been down with the old and up with the new - as hotels, restaurants and residential and office buildings are shifting the landscape of this community. Some embraced the

change - while others are not so sure.

“I have lived here for 23 years,” April Murray said. “We grew up playing in Frost Park, attending Olson Middle School and

South Broward High School - and would ride our bikes to the beach.

Great way to grow up. In this day of developers handing out all kinds of cash to cities that need it,

you have to give in, but I have to think that we have done it in a way where it doesn’t compromise what Dania Beach is.”

By Mayor Joy Adams I have been taking the time to reflect on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day and what it means to me. Dr. King is an inspiration and always stood as a central figure for unity and inclusivity. I think that it is important for us to challenge ourselves to ask to understand, empathize, reflect upon and accept all members of our community, especially those with viewpoints different from our own. I hope that 2019 will be a year that embraces these ideals here in Hallandale Beach. Stay engaged and share your ideas, we care about you and the community.

On Sunday, I had a surprise visit from Vice President Joe Biden. He passed by St. Matthews and said hello. I was impressed by his engaging smile and he just happened to be passing by on his way to the Diplomat Resort. We appreciate his brief visit to Hallandale Beach!

This past Friday, I had a wonderful time last week reading books with some of our best and brightest.

Reading is extremely important and helps young minds grow and develop. Please take a moment to visit our Hallandale Beach Branch Library (300 South Federal Highway). Hours are Monday and Tuesday from 12:00pm-8:00pm and WednesdaySaturday from 10:00am-6:00pm.

mmunity - is a good thing. While she still sees the heavier traffic, it is something that she will put up with - in the name of the City not being financially drained.

For many who never stray too far off US 1 - unless to go to the beach - there are changes in the neighborhoods that have helped to make this a much better place to live, and for many, play.

“We bought our home in 2011 from my parents,” Elias Brown explained. “I had grown up here but moved away for 16 years. When I left, it was pretty much Jaxson’s Ice Cream Parlor, Grampa’s Restaurant, the drug store on Federal and Frost Park. The airport was there but nothing you wanted to claim. We got our local news from the Dania Press and that was it.”

What Brown returned to was a community that was in the news for a lot of not-so-positive things. But that began to change - when new elected officials were put in place - and loads of interest in buying land to build hotels, restaurants, condos, rentals and colleges became a reality.

With the Casino @ Dania Beach (formerly Dania Jai Alai) serving as the centerpiece of this City, and for good reason, with so much fun, food and entertainment to offer - it is not the only game in town. Dania Pointe is already taking shape - with the opening of the first phase, enticing many with a very impressive

and bright future.

When completed, Dania Pointe will truly enhance the community adding a sophisticated mix of shopping, dining and entertainment venues - spotlighting the hottest, most recognizable brands, along with boutique and specialty shops.

“We needed an identity away from the beach and jai alai,” Marilyn Miller said. “My husband and I just bought a condo here after living the past 18 months in Hollywood. This is a great community that is easily one of the most convenient and very underrated. When you tell someone that you literally live 5 minutes from the airport, it is good news.”

Indeed, with Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood International Airport five minutes to the north, more and more visitors are not just passing through, but using this as a hub. Whether they are sightseeing in Miami-Dade and the upper Keys - or heading down to the Everglades - Dania Beach is now being used as that base camp, if you will.

IMPORTANT PROJECTS MOVING ALONG With more and more people moving and visiting Dania Beach, there is additional traffic. From I-95 to the beaches, the infrastructure of this community needs to be addressed, but in being more of a yearround community, there are going to be projects that take shape 12 months a year.

Ocean Park is a true diamond in the rough. Cleaning up the site, organizing signage, restroom facilities, site lighting and landscaping have been updated for a

One of the City’s latest revitalization approaches is the Oasis Project, an incremental effort designed to improve specific streets with the goal of fostering neighborhood pride and improvement, and through a “ripple effect” induce owners and tenants in the City to work together to beautify the City, to increase property values, and to reduce crime.

At its core, the Oasis Program is a pro-active approach to crime prevention by making improvements to residential and public property to deter low level crime, anti-social behavior and property neglect through a partnership between the target community and the City of Dania Beach.

ANTIQUE DISTRICT Unfortunately the once thriving Antique District, which was certainly a destination back in the day, has never really gotten it together - the way that many felt it would.

However, there are a number of antique dealers who are thriving and doing well, and while they are mostly individuals right now, there is a never ending quest to making this Antique District one that will include everyone.

BIG GAME BURGERS

Have A Tasty Gameplan Ready For This Sunday

With the Big Game coming up this Sunday in Atlanta, football fans will certainly gathering around the TV to watch this exciting matchup.

When it comes time to eat, you can be the hit of the party - with a few delicious hamburgers that will please everyone.

Today, we roll out some game time French Onion Soup Burgers with mouth-watering flavor.

FRENCH ONION SOUP BURGER • 3 tablespoons butter • 2 onions, halved and thinly sliced • 2 fresh thyme sprigs • 1 fresh bay leaf • Salt • Pepper • 1 tablespoon tomato paste • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce • 1 teaspoon red wine vinegar • 1/4 cup red wine • 1/2 cup chicken or beef stock • 1 1/2 pounds ground beef

• 1/2 pound Gruyere cheese, grated • 4 buns

In a large sauté pan, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the onions, thyme and bay leaf, and season with salt and pepper. Caramelize the onions over medium-low heat until soft, about 20 minutes. Stir in the tomato paste. Next, add the Worcestershire sauce, vinegar, wine and stock.

Bring to a simmer over medium heat and cook until the pan is nearly dry, about 10 minutes. Taste the mixture, and add salt and pepper as desired.

Remove the thyme sprigs and bay leaf, and reserve the onions while you make the burgers.

Heat a cast iron or heavy bottomed pan over high heat. Form 4 burger patties, trying not to overwork the meat. Season each burger with salt.

Cook the burgers over high heat for 5 minutes.

Flip the burgers and pile grated Gruyere cheese on top of each patty. Cook for another 4 to 5 minutes. Place each burger on a bottom bun and top with a scoop of the onion mixture. Serve

GUACAMOLE BURGER • 4 hamburger patties • kosher salt • Freshly ground black pepper • 4 slices pepper jack • 2 ripe avocados • 1/4 cup cherry tomatoes, chopped • 1 jalapeño, minced • Juice of 1 lime • 4 Hamburger buns

Heat grill or grill pan to high. Season burger patties with salt and pepper and grill until pink, 6 minutes per side for medium. Add cheese and let melt, 1 minute.

Meanwhile, in a large bowl, mash avocados.

Add tomatoes, jalapeños, and lime juice and season with salt.

Assemble burger: Add patty and guacamole to buns and serve.

Hallandale Symphonic Pops Orchestra

A Hidden Gem Many South Floridians Are Missing Out On

With all the area destinations that receive much of the spotlight - one local gem seems to get no attention at all.

Welcome to the Hallandale Symphonic Pops Orchestra. Easily one of the best kept secrets throughout the years - and its a big mystery to people like Armin Lovenvirth and Phyllis Broccone, who have spent so much time trying to elevate the culture in this community.

“It is amazing to me that more people haven’t at least gone to one performance,” Lovenvirth explained. “This is truly something that goes beyond what the perception of an orchestra is.

We have jazz and swing, and so much more.”

Under the direction of the Maestro Peter Fuchs, many are looking toward February 12th. The exciting concert features Tenor, John Ricci & renown pianist Sofyia Uryvayeva.

Under the direction of renowned maestro Peter Fuchs, the Orchestra brought to the stage Broadway classics presented by two outstanding young performers, Marcel and Marcela Rasa back on January 2. They presented special renditions of two classic musicals, Phantom of the Opera and Carousel.

“The different musical talent that we have in each show makes each month different,” Lovenvirth added.

The varied musical menu included waltzes, marches, pops, jazz and patriotic music.

If you are looking foward to February 12th, the concert features Tenor John Ricci & renown

pianist Sofyia Uryvayeva. It promises to be an evening that everyone will enjoy.

The season’s final concert March 19 features vocalists, Iris Revson & James Perkowsky.

Show time begins promptly at 7:30PM. The Hallandale Symphonic Pops will provide hours of the finest musical entertainmen for everyone!
