Hollywood Beach Has Remained A Quaint Getaway – Despite Corporate Growth

Miami Beach has become the ultimate concrete jungle – as residences and businesses continue to spring up each year to facilitate the many residents that are now calling South Florida home.

There are also dozens of other communities that have lost that small town charm that made so many destinations

popular.

One of the cities that has long been home to the old school mom and pop businesses and the charm of the smaller hotels and apartments is Hollywood Beach.

While some of that charm has been lost – with the addition of larger hotels and chain eateries – this has certainly been an area where the past meets the present with positive results.

Ever since Professor Arieh Schachner could remember, he has been all about saving lives and making the quality of life better.

The President of the Save a Child’s Heart Foundation, Professor Schachner is the founder of the Cardiovascular Surgery Department at the Wolfson Medical Center in his hometown of Holon, Israel.

Save A Child’s Heart” foundation is one of the largest organizations in the world that provides urgent pediatric heart surgery to deserving children from developing countries, suffering from serious cardiac conditions.

“Around the world, we are a family that is building bridges through medicine,” Professor Schachner explained. “What we have done is save lives in children who would have certainly died. That is what this is all about.”

Living on certain pillars, Professor Schachner and the foundation has made a difference around the world - by improving the quality and accessibility of cardiac care for children. Through their programs in Israel, they have been able to provide life-saving cardiac treatments to children and train health care professionals from these countries to have the skills to deliver quality care in their home communities.

“We have certainly become a game changer,” said Professor Schachner. “Every day a child from a developing country is saved in the pediatric cardiac surgical unit at the Wolfson Medical Center. Thousands of children are alive today because of a dedicated group of medical professionals who volunteer their time and expertise to perform cardiac surgery and train medical personnel.”

With a number of chapters around, USA Vein Clinics started the Chicago chapter of Save A Child’s Heart in September, 2016 to help raise awareness and funds for the foundation. In 2016, Save A Child’s Heart from Iraq, Syria, Ethiopia and Romania,

achieved the milestone of saving the 4,000th child from the 53rd country that received help. It also has trained more than 110 medical team members from these countries as well.

“To multiply the effectiveness of our resources outside of Israel, we are always training medical personnel from developing countries,” Professor Schachner pointed out. “The ultimate goal is to create centers around the world, which will enable local medical personnel to provide life-saving services on their own. We have saved 4,600 children to date.”

DR. AMI COHEN Save a Child's Heart exists today because of the vision, passion, and boundless energy of the late Dr. Amram "Ami" Cohen, an excellent surgeon, an inspiring leader, and a warm and caring person.

Ami immigrated to Israel from the United States in 1992. He joined the staff of the Wolfson Medical Center and served as the Deputy Chief of Cardiovascular Surgery and Head of Pediatric Cardiac Surgery, under the direction and mentorship of Professor Schachner.

Save a Child’s Heart came into being in 1995 when an Ethiopian doctor contacted Dr. Cohen after being referred to him by a mutual friend at the Uni-

versity of Massachusetts. He asked for Dr. Cohen’s help with two children in desperate need of heart surgery and Dr. Cohen received the approval and support of Professor Schachner to commence with this project.

“We have rented bikes on this Broadwalk and the beach for five years,” Mike Ally said. “We all know it’s seasonal, but we have looked to locals during the late spring and summer to take advantage of what’s in

their own backyard.”

Indeed, if you watch this area throughout the course of a year, you will see many locals taking advantage of their own community and being rewarded with some great deals.

The City of Hollywood has always been on the cutting edge when it comes to hosting events, and attracting visitors. Last weekend, as many gathered at several places downtown and on the beach to watch the Big Game, some took in the antique car show, which has been a great event as well.

As many communities in South Florida are changing – and not for the best – Hollywood Beach has remained a destination where you can have the best of both worlds.

10th Annual Hot Hollywood Glam Raises over $27,000 for the Art & Culture Center

Hollywood – The Art and Culture Center/Hollywood hosted more than 200 attendees at its galleries during the 10th anniversary of Hot Hollywood Glam: Hooray for Hollywood. The fundraiser, held on Saturday, Jan. 20, 2018, netted over $27,000 for the Center’s arts program.

“Hooray for Hollywood” celebrated Hollywood’s Golden Era of Film and transformed the Center’s contemporary art galleries into a festive lounge. The annual event, complete with a red-carpet entrance, featured inspired Hollywood decor, music, a special performance by vocalist Maria De Crescenzo and a performance by VK Dance. “What we have done - with this space - is to designate seven rooms to those patients who are there for eye examinations,” Dr. Braverman explained. “Those who are there for other reasonsmedical and surgicalhave their examining rooms as well. It has worked out great.”

Making Valentine’s Day Very Special This Year • 1 1/2 tsp. pure vanilla extract • 1/2 c. white chocolate chips, melted

By now, we all know how romantic Valentine’s Day can be - with wine, a huge dinner and some beautiful flowers. But what if you had the chance to spend your special say, eating nothing but desserts?

This year, we have come up with a few sweet treats that you will simply love. Check out these delicious treats that everyone will love next Wednesday:

DRUNKEN STRAWBERRIES • 2 lb. strawberries • 2 1/2 c. rosé • 1/2 c. vodka • 1/2 c. sugar

In a large bowl, place strawberries. Pour over rosé and vodka and let sit, soaking up the booze, at least 1 hour.

Drain in a colander and pat strawberries dry with paper towels.

Roll strawberries in sugar and serve.

CHOCOLATE CAKE • 1/2 c. unsalted butter, melted and cooled slightly • 2 1/2 c. Milk, warmed • 1 c. flour • 1/2 c. cocoa powder • 4 eggs, separated • 1/8 tsp. white vinegar • 1 1/2 c. granulated sugar

• 1 tsp. espresso powder • 1 tsp. vanilla extract • strawberries, for serving • Powdered sugar, for dusting

Preheat the oven to 325 degrees F. Grease a 8"x8" baking dish with butter or cooking spray.

In a medium bowl bowl, whisk together the flour and cocoa powder. Set aside.

In a separate bowl, whip the egg whites with vinegar until stiff peaks form. Set aside.

In a third bowl, beat the egg yolks and sugar until pale yellow in color (it will still be grainy). Beat in the melted butter, espresso powder and vanilla extract until evenly incorporated. Mix the flour mixture into the batter until evenly incorporated. Add the milk and beat low speed.

Gradually and gently fold in the egg whites. Pour the batter into the prepared pan and bake for 50-60 minutes or until the cake is slightly jiggly.

Cool completely. Dust with powdered sugar.

CHOCOLATE FUDGE SWIRLS • 3 c. mini marshmallows • 2 c. sugar • 1 c. heavy cream • 6 tbsp. butter • pinch of kosher salt • 3 c. semisweet chocolate chips

Line an 8” pan with parchment paper and coat evenly with cooking spray, then set aside.

In a medium saucepan over medium heat, combine marshmallows, sugar, heavy cream, butter, and salt.

Cook, stirring often, until butter and marshmallows are almost melted, 5 to 6 minutes. Bring mixture to a boil and cook, stirring occasionally, for 5 minutes. Remove from heat.

Add chocolate chips and vanilla and stir until the chocolate has melted, then pour hot fudge into prepared pan. Immediately drizzle white chocolate all over and swirl the mixtures together with a toothpick.

Let fudge cool to room temperature, then refrigerate in pan until set, about 3 hours.

Slice into squares and serve.

RED VELVET NO BAKE CHEESECAKE •1 1/2 c. heavy cream • 12 oz. cream cheese, softened • 1/2 c. sugar • 1 c. boxed red velvet cake mix • red food coloring • 1 graham cracker crust, homemade or store-bought • 1 c. heavy cream • 8 oz. semisweet chocolate, chopped (or chips) • Whipped cream, for serving

In the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the whisk attachment, beat heavy cream until stiff peaks form. Add cream cheese and beat until completely smooth.

Fold in sugar, red velvet cake mix, and a few drops food coloring (the color will be pink; continue adding until it's to your liking).

Pour mixture into prepared pie crust, smoothing over top with a rubber spatula. Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate until firm, at least 4 hours.

When ready to serve, make ganache. Heat heavy cream in a small saucepan over low heat and pour over chocolate. Let sit 3 minutes, then stir until creamy.

Remove cheesecake from fridge and drizzle with ganache. Serve with whipped cream.

Funtastic Friday Friday, February 9 Bring the kids to Downtown Hollywood for a night of family fun at Funtastic Fridays. This weekly event at the ArtsPark at Young Circle in Downtown Hollywood features a rocking DJ spinning the tunes while kids kick-off their shoes and bounce the night away in inflatable bounce houses. Guided activities include games, arts and crafts and artistic face painting. Each Funtastic Friday is free and runs from 5:00 - 8:00 p.m. at the ArtPark at Young Circle located at US-1 and Hollywood Boulevard.

Saturday, February 10 Bring your prized pooch, your human friends and family for a Valentine's celebration full of fur-friendly fun. The 3rd Annual “BE MINE” Dog Show will be held this Saturday, February 10th from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Stan Goldman "Hollywoof" Dog Park at 800 Knights Road in Hollywood.

Dogs will compete in categories such as: Best Trick, Best Look-A-Like, Most Obedient and more. The free family event will have raffle prizes, vendors and a silent auction with proceeds to benefit the Hollywood Council of Civic Associations’ Pete Brewer Scholarship Fund for graduating Hollywood high school seniors.
