19th St. Patrick’s Day Staying away from Parade this Sunday serious eye problems Downtown Hollywood will be alive from noon to 6 p.m.

Hollywood - The City of Hollywood, Hibernians of Hollywood and the Community Redevelopment Agency team up to host this annual, free celebration of all things Irish.

This year’s parade and festival will run from noon to 6 p.m. in the heart of Downtown Hollywood. At 1 p.m. the parade will travel east on Hollywood Boulevard from 21st Avenue to Young Circle, returning on Harrison Street to 21st Avenue.

Braverman Eye Center has kept Andy Pappas on his feet Dr. Stanley Braverman and satisfied patient Andy Pappas.

Growing up in Chicago, and working for the City, Andy Pappas used his eyes for a lot of paperwork.

While he was very nearsighted and had to wear corrective lenses since the age of 4, there was never a reason to worry about eye problems since his job depended on being able to read a lot during the course of the week.

The first time that Pappas noticed anything wrong with his eyes was when he suffered a torn retina back in 1997. A visit to his family eye doctor uncovered the problem and it was corrected with rest, allowing time for it to heal.

“Even though I had to wear glasses to see, I never had anything that completely shut me down or took over my life,” he explained. “Even when I had the torn retina, I was told that it was something that is not uncommon with patients who are very nearsighted.”

When the retinal tear happened, it was explained to Pappas that the vitreous gel, which is the clear material that fills the eyeball, is attached to the retina in the back of the eye. As we get older, the vitreous may change shape, pulling away from the retina. If the vitreous pulls a piece of the retina

Michael Fucheck had a plan before he arrived

Michael Fucheck is one of them.

So unique is Fucheck, that while he is General Counsel for Gulfstream Park’s Stronach Group (Canada), handling multi million dollar accounts daily, he fully understands what it takes to be part of the communities, in which he serves.

What Fucheck has done, is get involved in just about anything he can to bridge his workplace with local businesses and residents. That is a concept that is indeed rare, but important for the future of this region.

Fucheck knows that for the Gulfstream property to

be successful, local businesses and the residents have to be addressed. While we are a seasonal area, there are plenty of locals who spend time here year round. Those are the people you need to teach.

From Canada to Washington D.C. to South Florida, Fucheck keeps heavily involved with everything to do with the company - and helps promote future endeavors. All along, he has been one of the most approachable figures as the largest taxpayer in Hallandale Beach.

“Being around for many years and watching how communities and local businesses rally around destinations, this was something that was important from the time I arrived,” Fucheck explained. “Being part of

Staying away from serious eye problems Braverman From Page 1A with it, it causes a retinal tear. Once a retinal tear occurs, vitreous fluid may seep through and lift the retina off the back wall of the eye, causing the retina to detach or pull away.

Because he traveled back and forth with his wife from South Florida to Chicago, Pappas kept his family eye doctor back home, but after his wife suffered a stroke in 2013, they decided it was best to move to Hallandale Beach full-time.

As a resident of the area, Pappas didn’t seek out a new eye doctor until he needed to make an appointment for an examination. Asking around for opinions on what doctors were the best, the name Dr. Stanley Braverman and the Braverman Eye Center came up. It turned out to be the best advice this 70-year-old received.

While waiting for the routine examination, Pappas felt that something wasn’t right. He was on target. The same torn retina he had experienced in his right eye - was now present in his other eye.

“I still remember going to see Dr. Braverman and how impressed I was with the office and everything that they did,” Pappas recalled. “He told me straight out that my retina was torn. I knew something wasn’t right. We tend to know our bodies pretty well.”

He was so pleased by the work they did, Pappas decided to make Dr. Braverman his regular eye doctor.

Over the past four years, the Hallandale Beach resident who would walk to his eye appointments from his home, felt at ease, knowing that he had the best around.

With his torn retina healed and, he working a few days a week at a local golf course, Pappas started to notice changes in his eyesight. When he went to see what was happening, he was told by Dr. Braverman that he had developed cataracts in both eyes. It was news that he never expected to hear.

“Even though I was apprehensive about the procedure and worried a lot, Dr. Braverman assured me that I had nothing to be concerned about,” Pappas recalled. “I had the first laser assisted surgery in April and then the other one done a few weeks later. I was completely healed and back doing what I like to do in a week.”

The surgeries were explained by everyone in the office - and that was what made the experience different in other offices - without that personal touch. Dr. Braverman added, “Mr. Pappas was very, very near sighted before his cataract surgery. Because of our modern machines, such as the Catalys Laser to improve in the precision of cataract surgery, and the improved technical ability that we have available to us in the last few years, Mr. Pappas was able to achieve 20/20 uncorrected vision!”

An avid walker who enjoys eating at the local restaurants and visiting many businesses, Pappas is feeling great and living life in year-round perfect weather.

“Our eyesight is so precious and important, it’s natural to be a little nervous when you have anything done to our eyes,” Pappas said. “But from the time you check in to see Dr. Braverman and his assistants, you are in good hands.”

What Are Cataracts?

A cataract is formed when the natural lens of the eye, responsible for focusing light and producing sharp images, becomes cloudy and hardens, resulting in a loss of visual function. The lens of the eye is clear at birth but is one of the first parts of the body to show the effects of aging. A cataract is painless and usually develops gradually over several months or years. The onset of a cataract in one or both eyes may cause decreased night vision, impaired depth perception, and increased color distortion.

Cataracts are the leading cause of vision loss among adults age 55 and older.

In fact, poor vision from cataracts affects 60 percent of all adults over age 60.

However, cataracts also can result from injury, heredity, or medications, so they can affect people of all ages.

Understanding that no two conditions or patients are the same, Dr. Braverman analyzes the patient’s symptoms, performs a comprehensive eye exam, and may test for glare disability and contrast sensitivity before making a diagnosis. The final decision to proceed with the surgery belongs to the patient.

Your optometrist or Dr. Braverman may prescribe glasses, medication or surgery depending on your symptoms, complaints and age. Usually surgery will not be recommended until glasses no longer work to make you visually happy. In the case of clear lensectomy surgery, the patient cosmetically wants to get rid of their glasses, but they are out of the LASIK treatment range.

67, who grew up in North Miami Beach and attended Miami Norland High, lived much of the past two decades in Palm Beach County. She was a

passionate wife, mother, volunteer and someone who loved sports - and being a fan.

From the Miami Dolphins to the Marlins and the Hurricanes, there was nobody who loved cheering for her home team more than Susan. She was a Dolphins’ season ticket holder for over three decades.

Susan is survived by her loving and supportive husband of over 40 years, Ray; her amazing daughters Rachel and Danielle and her brother, Larry.

Her love for animals throughout her life is also why the family has asked that in lieu of flowers, please make a donation in her name to the Humane Society in your community.

State of the City Part II: Embracing change and moving forward in Hallandale Beach • SECOND OF THREE PARTS.

By Mayor Joy Cooper Hallandale Beach - As we begin the second part of our State of the City Address, we look back at last week when we spoke about change - and how we all need to embrace it to move on.

IT’S ALL ABOUT THE CITY After the election, I was on the side that was shocked, saddened and unsure. Even Putin is having a tough time with change. It has taken me a good three months to adapt. But a two-week winter vacation did not hurt either. And a good protest. Yes, I have my hot pink pussy cat hat.

I was searching for a quote for one of my articles after the election on Change.

Obviously, there were quotes from President Obama, but there was one that struck me first. It was from President John F. Kennedy: “We can change. We are changing, but we need time to do it.” How true, especially in Hallandale Beach.

One of his most famous quotes was the one I used: “Change is the law of life. And those that look only to past or present are sure to miss the future.” I do need to cover some of the past and present before going into the future of this great city.

We have a new Commissioner.

Annabelle Taub and new Vice Mayor, Keith London.

We have a new City Manager, Roger Carlton. Roger has over 40 years of management experience in public service and the private sector. He was City Manager of Surfside before he retired to North Carolina. His knowledge is a great asset to our city. I am happy to report he is still here after three of our commission meetings (LOL).

He also has a great sense of humor.

One meeting he said: “I think this City does everything accept snow removal.”

We also have a new city attorney, Jennifer Merino Esq. Jennifer has come to the City from the Broward County OIG’s office. She is a bright, young attorney. This is her first time working for a city.

The new team officially has been working together for a little over three weeks, but it looks like a promising year is ahead.

Our Mission Statement still rings true: The City of Hallandale Beach is dedicated to enhancing the quality of life in our community in a fiscally responsible manner by providing superior services that meet the needs of our community - as well as plan for their future needs through continued communication.

This budget year, we kept our tax rate the same at 5.1918% and did not

increase basic fees. We did this with even with some real challenges; employee health insurance cost increases, purchase of fire apparatus/equipment, Police Digital Public Safety Program, increased levels of service in parks, innovation technology and public works. Revenue reductions in administrative charges mainly from the enterprise funds, adjustments to salaries because of the Classification and Compensation Study.

We are still one of the lowest cost cities to live in a with the 13th lowest millage rate and an overall cost of living at 19.%.

Our City has budgeted the use of reserves in lean times and to address infrastructure needs. This year reserves were budgeted to enhance capital projects.

We have budgeted to complete a full replacement of our existing cameras and a new radio system. Our dispatch is provided though partnership with Broward County. The cities will be responsible for the hand-held radio systems. This has been one of my initiatives over the past 10 years that is finally complete.

We have also added a new bus to our system, the cost is $175,000 for this one route. We are currently working to approve this addition that will link to Young Circle in Hollywood.

In addition to these capital projects, we have many major projects underway and exciting developments on the drawing board.

The issuance of the GO Bonds in June provided the capital resources to complete the Parks Master Plan, which was approved through a referendum held in November 2014.

Fitch Ratings and S&P Global Ratings have assigned the GO Bonds a rating of AA+ and AA, respectively. You do not get great ratings without being fiscally sound.

City of Aventura Announces 2nd Annual Arts, Crafts, and All That Jazz Festival Aventura - The City of Aventura announces its 2nd annual Arts, Crafts, and All That Jazz festival featuring live entertainment by the Nicole Yarling Quartet, the South Florida Jazz Orchestra and the University of Miami Frost School of Music Jazz Ensemble on Saturday, March 11, 2017 at Founders Park from noon to 5 PM. 15TH ANNUAL BROWARD WATER MATTERS DAY, SATURDAY, MARCH 11 The 15th Annual Broward Water Matters Day event "Community. Climate. Connected!" on Saturday, March 11th from 9am to 3pm at Tree Tops Park in Davie.

Water Matters Day is Broward County's signature water conservation event where residents can learn about our local and regional water resources, how water is managed, and how Broward's water managers are planning to meet our future water needs.

Residents will receive tips on water conservation, find out about rebates and incentives for upgrading to water-conserving devices, and learn how to create "Florida friendly" and drought tolerant landscapes.

Participants can receive a free native plant or tree just for learning how to conserve the earth's most valuable resource. Kids activities include crafts, rain barrel and native landscaping demonstrations, Food Truck Invasion, and a variety of giveaways and raffles.

Dolly’s Dream Project is saving the lives of many dogs

Fort Lauderdale -The Dolly's Dream Project was created in 2015 to help dispel the myths of bully breed dogs. The Boca Raton based foundation currently works with the Humane Society of Broward County (HSBC) in Fort Lauderdale, Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League in West Palm Beach and Furry Friends in Jupiter.

Sadly American Staffordshire terriers, American bulldogs, bull terriers, and mixes of these breeds are prevalent in shelters across the country. To reduce the number of these dogs being born and entering shelters, the Dolly's Dream project offers free spay or neuter for bully breeds residing in Broward and Palm Beach Counties. Since the program began in 2015, 328 dogs have been sterilized at the HSBC and 147 dogs have been sterilized at Peggy Adams.

In March 2016, another facet was created to help the bully breed dogs in these shelters find homes.

Dolly's Dream now underwrites the adoption fee and extensive supplies including a training crate, walking harness, collar, lead, ID tag, and appropriate chew toys for select dogs. In addition, the program will even cover the cost of obedience classes at the shelters for those adopted dogs. Since this exciting

element has been added, 34 dogs have been placed.

In addition to spay/neuter and adoptions, the Dolly’s Dream program provides a res-

cue stipend for bully breed dogs that are taken by reputable rescue organizations from Palm Beach County Animal Control. To date 50 dogs have been rescued as a result. The stipend helps cover the cost of food, veterinary care and other supplies. At the HSBC, 681 bully breed dogs have been helped through surrender prevention efforts thanks to Dolly’s Dream. This includes vaccines, wound care, food assistance, xrays, behavior assistance information, bloodwork and orthopedic surgery for several dogs that were transferred from Broward County Animal Care and Adoptions to the HSBC for care.

Daniella Jordan, Director of the Dolly's Dream Project is thrilled with success of the adoption program. "This element of the program will hopefully allow potential adopters the opportunity to see what wonderful dogs they are. Each week two Dolly's Dream Dogs are

featured at each of the participating shelters.

These are dogs that may have been surrendered by their families or are transfers from animal control facilities. The one thing all the dogs

have in common is that they all need a loving family."

Dolly's Dream hopes to expand and work with other reputable shelters to help these often misunderstood dogs.

Innovative Treatment Quashes Hunger, Helps Weight Loss (BPT) - More than one in three Americans roughly 100 million people - are obese, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Like so many of these individuals, Cheryl Denby struggled for years with countless diets that left her hungry, frustrated, and deeply discouraged when they failed.

That changed in late 2015 when she underwent a minimally invasive, investigational treatment to reduce blood flow to the part of the stomach that creates the body's most powerful hunger signals.

"Before I went through with this treatment, I weighed nearly 300 pounds and felt uncomfortable when around other people. It really limited what I wanted to do," said Denby. "Now, more than one year later, I weigh close to 225 pounds, feel more confident with friends and when shopping for clothes, and can once again travel comfortably on an airplane. My weight loss has also inspired other people in my family to get healthier, with my son losing just as much weight as I have by being more mindful of his eating habits."

Her life was changed by bariatric arterial embolization (BAE), a new and minimally invasive treatment that targets the spot in the stomach that produces most of the body's strongest hunger hormone, called ghrelin.

Denby is one of 20 people enrolled in a clinical trial, known as BEAT Obesity, taking place at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland and Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York City. The results are promising. One month after treatment, those who followed up had an excess weight loss of about 9 percent. Those who followed up after one year had a higher average excess weight loss of 12.6 percent.

Excess weight loss is the amount lost beyond a person's ideal body weight.

"The promising results that we are seeing in Cheryl and the other trial participants tell us that BAE is well tolerated, appears to be effective in the long term, and has the potential to touch many lives," said Clifford Weiss, M.D., FSIR, the study's lead researcher and associate professor of radiology and radiological science at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. Along with his team, Weiss, the director of interventional radiology research at Hopkins, is presenting findings from their research at the Society of Interventional Radiology's 2017 Annual Scientific Meeting, taking place in Washington D.C. Denby attributes much of her weight loss to the fact she doesn't feel nearly as hungry as she did before the treatment. Researchers believe this is because BAE reduces the production of ghrelin.

Specifically, they found that ghrelin levels decreased by almost 9 percent one month after treatment and by 17 percent three months after.

A major benefit of BAE is that it is much less invasive than other obesity treatments. BAE is performed

Lessons Learned In Hiring A Private Aide By the daughter of an Aventura mom

Finally, I found the perfect person to look after mom, who could no longer live alone safely. Marie, the aide, was referred by another aide in mom’s building, who seemed to take great care of a very demanding neighbor who was showing signs of confusion like my mother. During the interview process, Marie demonstrated patience, attentiveness to mom’s needs, and had glowing references. I even called two of them, who were out of state, but who affirmed how good Marie was to them or their family member. What a relief! After three weeks in Florida, I finally was able to return to my family in Ohio and feel that mom was in good hands.

At first, all was fabulous. Mom said Marie helped her with showering, picking out her clothes, made small meals, and they went to dinner a lot. Mom also said Marie helped her clean out her drawers and closets, and helped her organize her things.

Then, mom began to complain that Marie moves things around, and mom cannot find them. She told Marie to keep things in one place, and that Marie raising her voice to her. I spoke to Marie, who said mom moves things around herself, and then cannot find them. I suggested that since mom can get confused, it might be best to organize things the way it would be easier for her. The next day, mom called and said her diamond ring and earrings were missing, and the $400 spare money that she has kept in the corner of her bedside table for years was also missing. I asked to speak to Marie. Mom informed me that Marie went down to the store and had not yet returned.

When I called back later, mom said Marie still had not returned and she did not know what she should do for dinner. I called Security in mom’s building. They had not seen the aide since she left in the morning. I asked them to check on mom. Feeling upset myself, I called another neighbor, asking if she could either include my mother in her dinner plans or help mom order delivery from a local restaurant, and then see to it that she had something for breakfast in the morning.

I called the Aventura police to report a possible theft, and booked an early morning flight back to Florida.

What an ordeal followed. However, at least mom was not physically harmed!

Although I had resisted going through an agency due to a slightly higher cost, I began a rapid search of getting competent help as soon as possible, calling mom’s doctors and going online. The name Always Classic Care came up several times. When I called, the staff was most professional asking about mom’s status and needs. The owner, Terry Adler, joined the conversation with more specific questions about mom’s personality and capability status, as well as my concerns and services I felt mom would need. All of their healthcare workers must submit to a rigorous screening process that includes FBI fingerprinting for any history of wrong doing. Dr. Adler Using Laser In Battle Against Toe Fungus

According to the American Podiatric Medical Association, approximately 40% of patients visiting a podiatrist have complaints or signs of toe fungus. It may begin with tenderness or pain in the toe, developing into an unsightly thick, darkened nail, and it can spread from toe to toe. In fact, the fungus can get so out of control that it can infect the foot and ankle.

Topical treatment such as Lamisil cream usually is the first course of therapy for a mild or moderate case. However, long-term use or oral antifungal medication is not recommended due to the toxic side effects Lamisil can have on the liver. This is a special risk if a patient is taking other medications, including excessive use of Tylenol that can manifest the same hepatic damage.

Over the past few years, Dr. Charlton Adler has been following closely the application and reported results of laser therapy on fungus toenails and other podiatric and wound situations. “The introduction of laser in treating toe fungus has had a major impact on attacking this uncomfortable and unsightly problem,” says Dr. Adler. Because of the intensity of the heat generated by laser rays, Enrique Mechulon a specially trained and certified laser technician working with Dr. Adler, says that both he and the patient wear laser protective glasses and take several rest periods during the 40-minute process.

“I have already witnessed many success stories where patients have spent years and thousands of dollars to get rid of their nail fungus,” says Mechulon. “Depending on the patient’s general health and nail problem, it can take anywhere from one to nine treatments, but the results are there with minimum risk to the body,” he adds.

“I have wanted to offer this therapy for quite a while,” says Dr. Adler. “However, I am cautious in my approach, and I needed more proof on studies and reports.” Dr Adler adds that research shows that 80% of all toe fungus has been healed using laser therapy. “This is in contrast to topical ointments that only work 50% of the time,” says Adler, “and with topical treatment, the infection usually returns.”

Making St. Patrick’s Day very special this year Traditional corned beef is always great - but Irish Soda Bread is a hit as well medium heat. Brown the lamb in batches, adding more oil as needed. When all the lamb is browned, remove it and set aside. Add the carrots, onions, and garlic and cook, stirring occasionally, until the vegetables start to caramelize, about 10 minutes.

Return the lamb to the casserole. Add the wine, bay leaves, and lemon peel. Bring to a simmer, cover, and place on bottom rack of oven. Cook until the lamb is very tender, about 2 hours. Serve with Cucumber Yogurt and New Potatoes With Olives.

Well, it’s just about St. Patrick’s Day - and while many are planning where to go out and let loose on Friday, March 17, others are thinking about what to make at home.

So this year, before you think about going out, here are some dishes that you just may want to cook at home.

LAMB STEW WITH NEW POTATOES • 3 pounds lamb-stew meat, cut into 2-inch chunks • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour • 1 tablespoon dried oregano • 1 tablespoon kosher salt • 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper • 3 to 6 tablespoons olive oil • 4 carrots, peeled and cut into 1/2-inch-thick slices • 3 medium onions, sliced • 4 cloves garlic, crushed • 1 750-milliliter bottle full-bodied red wine, • such as Cotes du Rhone • 2 bay leaves • 4 strips fresh lemon peel • Cucumber Yogurt • New Potatoes With Olives

Preheat oven to 350° F. Pat the lamb dry with paper towels and place in a large bowl. In a shallow bowl, combine the flour, oregano, salt, and pepper. Sprinkle the flour mixture evenly over the lamb and toss well.

Heat 3 tablespoons of oil in a heavy casserole over

ALE-BRAISED CORNED BEEF, BRUSSELS SPROUTS, AND CARROTS • 1 3-pound piece corned beef brisket (with spice • packet, if included) • 1 pound carrots, peeled and cut into 3-inch lengths • 1 12-ounce bottle amber ale • 3/4 pound Brussels sprouts • 1/2 cup sour cream • 2 tablespoons whole-grain mustard • 1 tablespoon chopped fresh tarragon

In a 5 to 6-quart slow cooker, place the beef, the contents of the spice packet (if included), carrots, and ale.

Cook, covered, until the beef is tender, on high for 4 to 5 hours or on low for 7 to 8 hours.

Ten minutes before serving, thinly slice the Brussels sprouts. (This is easiest to do in a food processor with the slicing blade.)

Transfer the beef from the slow cooker to a cutting board; if the slow cooker is on the low setting, turn it to high. Add the Brussels sprouts to the carrots and liquid in the slow cooker. Cook, covered, until the Brussels sprouts are tender, somewhere between 4 to 6 minutes.

Meanwhile, in a small bowl, combine the sour cream, mustard, and tarragon.

Slice the beef. Serve with the vegetables and sour cream sauce.

CABBAGE AND SAUSAGE CASSEROLE • 2 pounds Napa, savoy, or green cabbage • 2 pounds Italian sausage (sweet or hot) • 1/2 cup sour cream • 1 tablespoon prepared horseradish or mustard

Heat oven to 400°. Slice the cabbage 1/2 inch thick.

Place 1/3 of the cabbage in a Dutch oven or casserole.

From each sausage, trim 1 end and, starting at the other end, squeeze to remove the meat from the casing.

Arrange half the sausage on top of the cabbage. Press firmly. Top with half the remaining cabbage and all the remaining sausage and press again. Spread the remaining cabbage over the sausage.

Cover with foil and bake until the cabbage is tender, about 1 hour, 40 minutes. Remove from oven.

Let stand for 5 minutes. Meanwhile, in a small bowl, combine the sour cream and horseradish or mustard. Slice the casserole into wedges and serve with the sour cream mixture.

IRISH SODA BREAD • 3 cups all-purpose flour, spooned • and leveled, plus more for the work surface • 1/2 cup whole-wheat flour, spooned and leveled • 1 tablespoons sugar • 2 teaspoons kosher salt • 1 teaspoon baking powder • 1 teaspoon baking soda • 8 tablespoons cold unsalted butter, • cut into pieces • 1 cup raisins • 2 tablespoons caraway seeds • 1 1/3 cups buttermilk

Heat oven to 350° F. In a large bowl, whisk together the flours, sugar, salt, baking powder, and baking soda. With your hands or a pastry cutter, cut in the butter until the mixture is the consistency of coarse crumbs. Add the raisins and caraway and mix to combine. Add the buttermilk and mix just until the dough comes together but is still slightly shaggy.

Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured work surface and gently knead 8 to 10 times until a uniform dough forms. Shape the dough into a 7-inch round, about 1½ inches thick. Transfer to a parchment-lined baking sheet and score a large X in the top, about ¾ inch deep. Bake, rotating once, until the bread sounds hallow when tapped on the bottom, 55 to 65 minutes. Transfer to a wire rack to cool.
