It’s exciting Florida Derby week

Racing fans aren’t the only ones excited about what these five days mean to the local communities & businesses that can use some help

From the coverage the race attracts worldwide - to the week of activities that have gone on at Gulfstream Park & Casino in Hallandale Beach - things are falling into place for this much-anticipated event.

With the Kentucky Derby coming up, the Xpressbet.com Florida Derby is certainly one of those races that feature many of the thoroughbreds that we will

be watching all summer. The best of the best head south for this storied Saturday of racing.

Keith Miller has been attending the Florida Derby since the 1960’s - and while times have changed in the industry - it certainly has not diminished the enthusiasm for racing - and of course new racing fans to come out and take in the atmosphere.

“It’s like a Super Bowl feeling,” Miller said. “It used to be just the Saturday, but because of promotions and other things, it has become much bigger.”

New Parking Rates for Hollywood Allied Hearing Centers keeps Beach go into effect on May 1st you connected with the world Hollywood - To keep beach parking affordable for Hollywood residents, the City of Hollywood is offering a resident parking rate. Hollywood residents must register their vehicle(s) annually with the City’s Parking Division to enjoy an hourly parking rate of $1.50 per hour Monday through Thursday and $2.00 per hour Friday through Sunday and on holidays on Hollywood Beach. This rate is 50% less than the new nonresident rate of $3.00 per hour Monday through Thursday and $4.00 per hour Friday through Sunday and on holidays, going into effect May 1.

Annual Pasta Dinner has been moved to June Longtime Vice Mayor Bill Julian has stepped up for his community more than anyone else who has either served in office - or lived in Hallandale Beach.

He has many causes and equally as many passions to help make the community a much better place to live, work and play. One of those passions was raising money and hosting the Annual Kiwanis Pasta Dinner.

The dinner, which is heading into its amazing 12th year, is something

that Julian has long believed is the one community-based event that brings everyone together. It has indeed been his passion.

Last week, the event - scheduled for Friday, April 7, had to be moved back - when Julian suffered a massive stroke, leaving his friends and those who share that same passion, stunned and at a loss for words.

By Mayor Joy Cooper Hallandale Beach - Over the past weeks, our State legislators have begun session in Tallahassee. As usual, it does not look very good for our cities. There are many bills that will erode our local control - which means we will have less ability to enact local laws that our residents want.

One such bill will remove our ability to regulate vacation rentals. Our City finally had the chance to adopt an ordinance, not banning them, but providing regulations to protect our neighborhoods from nuisances. Our ability to control basic items including parking, amount of people in homes, fire codes and the requirement to have owners and or managers accessible 24 hours, is now being threatened.

Once again, the State is meddling with our ability to set mileage rates to pay for our City services. One bill provides that every city must go to roll back. If they need to exceed the roll back, it must pass by super majority.

Another is adding an additional $25,000 homestead exemption. One bill is capping commercial assessments by 9 percent. These at first glance, may sound great to property owners.

The problem is cities have one

major source of revenue, property taxes. Once you add homestead exemption the difference is made up by non-homesteaded properties. The good example is a balloon you can push to one side and the other side expands. I find that it’s amazing that the state legislators who do not provide police, fire, water and other city services are making decisions that should be left to municipal governments. These cuts could have a chilling effect of the health, safety and welfare of our residents.

There is another battle taking place between the telecom industry and the cities this year. There is a bill that will provide the ability for these utilities to install broadband boxes within our right of ways - without any local control or guidelines. This means without proof of necessity, boxes can be place anywhere, without safety or aesthetic guidelines. Obviously, the City is opposed to this. We have limited sidewalk space as it is. I asked that there also needs to be regulations for when the companies can perform construction.

Currently, they can close road lanes whenever they want, jeopardizing emergency access. In urban areas like ours, construction should not be allowed during peak hours.

The worst bill to date is the total preemption of a city to enact any new ordinances or regulation of local businesses. Cities could not create new business taxes, ban or regulate any new business or create new regulation control for existing businesses. In addition, there would be a cap of $25 on any business tax. This fee would not even cover the staff cost required to register or inspect businesses.

The other major bill proposed is an all-out “nuclear option” on Community Redevelopment Associations. No more CRAS after July 2017, all existing would be terminated by 2037, no new projects for CRA’s, current CRA’s cannot borrow and leverage their TIF to build infrastructure projects. No CRA’s could expand. Any expenditures must be approved by the county, whether chartered or not. This is another bill that is being opposed strongly from all corners of the state.

On the home front, we are very concerned about the state funding for the Hepburn Center. We receive funding to support our senior program. This funding is being cut. We are working with our lobbyist and state legislators to get it back into the budget.

It is only the fourth week of session.

The budget and appropriations list will

be released this week. We will continue to follow all these issues closely.

Breaking Ground On Foster Plaza This week we broke ground on another park project, Foster Plaza. This project is a linear park across from Foster Park that can be used for various functions. The CRA purchased the lots and will be adding parking, a stage and memorial wall. The plaza will work well with Foster Park.

Please make a note the first meeting in April was cancelled. The next meeting will be our monthly work shop and CRA meeting on Monday, April 17. The regular meeting will be held starting at 4 PM on Wednesday the 19th.

Aventura City Commission enters agreement to purchase land to develop a much needed Charter High School Aventura - The Aventura City Commission has entered into an Agreement with Gulfstream Park Racing Association, Inc. to purchase 2 acres of property next to Waterways Park. The City is in the planning stages of developing a charter high school with capacity for 800 students on this site. The school would likely open in August 2019 with 9th and 10th grade classes. The upper classes would be added over the following two years. The City

Commission has authorized the City Manager to negotiate agreements with Charter Schools USA to assist in the planning of the school and the overall management once it is opened.

Since 2003, the City of Aventura has operated the Aventura City of Excellence School, which is also a charter school serving 1020 K-8 students.

The City plans on filing an application for the school with the Miami-Dade County School Board and

begin construction in the fall of this year. As proposed, the school would provide preference to Aventura residents. The high school would provide another educational choice for the children of the City of Aventura. A public meeting to discuss the school with the community will be scheduled in the near future.

While the crowds are always well over 20,000 people, it is not just about the one race that brings in people such as Ron Twardzak and his wife, Adrianna, from Atlantic City. Both have planned their vacation around the Derby since last summer.

They arrived last week - went to Key West over to Fort Myers and back to the Hallandale Beach area for the weekend of racing. They took off to Orlando for three days to do the tourist thing and will be back - front and center - at Gulfstream Park this weekend.

“We love racing a lot,” Ron said. “So, what we did this year is to make this a racing/vacation two weeks,” he explained. “Never been to Key West or Fort Myers before, so this has been a total vacation.”

In addition, the three days of big time racing as well as taking advantage of the other points of interest is what also makes things special.

Aileen Summers-Witten grew up in North Miami Beach. When she was young, her memory of Gulfstream was a place her family would do trade shows and attend flea markets. She was too young for racing.

Living in Boston since 1975, Summers-Witten has followed her former hometown area - and when she came back to show her grandson, the University of Miami, Gulfstream Park and her hometown were the places she wanted to see.

“I have not been back here in over 40 years,” Summers-Witten said. “You move away, go to

school, get married, raise a family and become a part of that community, leaving this all behind.”

One day last October - when she knew that she and her husband would be taking their grandson south, that is when the plans were made.

“We passed by Gulfstream Park coming from the airport and I was blown away,” she explained.

“When I last left, Biscayne Boulevard was 2 lanes and Aventura had just started to be built. But we are definitely looking forward to this Saturday - because we are all going to the Florida Derby and I am excited.”

Hosts Start-up Competition for Tech Innovators and Entrepreneurs

Hollywood – Spark Hollywood, a coalition of local organizations focused on growing and supporting the technology sector and entrepreneurs in Hollywood, announced that its hosting its first ‘start-up competition’, Spark Hollywood, on May 11, 2017—5:00 PM to 8:00 PM. Spark Hollywood is an event that promotes innovation and entrepreneurship for local inventors, entrepreneurs and small businesses.

The event will feature a ‘quick pitch’ competition where entrepreneurs and start-up business vie for cash and in kind prizes. The event will be held on Thursday, May 11th, 2017 at Hollywood’s ArtsPark from 5pm to 8pm, located at 1 East Young Circle in Hollywood.

On Feb. 28, 2014, breeders Pam and Jim Robinson sprung into action to save the life of Unbridled Rage when the 19-year-old broodmare began to hemorrhage while delivering a healthy, leggy colt.

The daughter of Unbridled seemed to be rallying over the next few days before suddenly passing away, orphaning the colt who would go on to become Gunnevera, who will enter Saturday’s $1 million Xpressbet.com Florida Derby (G1) at Gulfstream Park as the leading candidate for this year’s Kentucky Derby (G1) on the basis of points-acqualifying crued.

“She hemorrhaged and after about three days we had her stable,” said Pam Robinson, who owns and operates Brandywine Farm in Paris, Ky. with her husband, Jim. “She was

doing quite well, but 10 days after foaling, she dropped dead from a heart attack. It was so unfortunate.”

The Robinsons brought in a Paint mare to nurse Gunnevera, the orphaned son of Dialed In. “Most of those nurse mares produce so much milk, lots of good rich milk,” Robinson said.

“They’re kind of like milk cows, so he got plenty of nutrition early on, that’s for sure.”

Gunnevera flourished under such abundant nourishment and extra attention.

“He was probably extra spoiled,” Robinson said. “He was always at

the gate wanting to be played with – almost like a big puppy dog.”

Gunnevera was very much the colt she had envisioned him to be when she decided to breed Unbridled Rage to Dialed In. “Dialed In, when I saw him, is a big, good-looking horse. You couldn’t ask for a better conformation horse,” said Robinson, who purchased two breeding rights to the 2011 Florida Derby winner. “The two, physically, I thought should produce a big strong horse, which they did. Gunnevera has always been a big colt, a very athletic colt.”

The Kentucky-bred

colt didn’t attract much attention at the 2015 Keeneland September Sale, bringing a top bid of $16,000 from South Florida-based trainer Antonio Sano for Peacock Racing Stables.

“We were very disappointed. We thought he’d bring a lot more than that, but we’re in the business of breeding, so we can’t just accumulate them,” Robinson said. “I think he was the second yearling going through the ring that day, and there was nobody there.

Personally, if I’m trying to buy something, I take a very good look at the first horses going through the ring. Usually, the first horses and the last horses – people tend to get there late and leave early – that’s when you seem to get your best bargains, your best buys.”

Gunnevera has gone on to amass more than $1 million in purse earnings while becoming a multiple graded-stakes winner with victories in the Saratoga Special (G2), the $1 million Delta Downs Jackpot (G3) and, most recently, the Fountain of Youth (G2) at Gulfstream March 4.

“It’s a wonderful feeling seeing one of our babies go on to accomplish things. I also follow my horses that run in claiming races, maiden special weights and allowance races,” Robinson said. “They’re all

kind of our kids. Whenever they can perform at the top of their ability, you’re always happy.”

Stephen Upchurch, the former Brandywine farm manager and longtime employee before venturing out on his own, is a co-breeder of Gunnevera.

“We gave him a third of the mare,” Robinson said.

The Robinsons were considerable more successful at the 2015 Keeneland September Sale while selling a son of Uncle Mo for $300,000. Royal Mo has gone on to capture the Robert B. Lewis (G3) at Santa Anita in February.

They’ve also bred 2011 Belmont Stakes (G1) winner Ruler On Ice, 2013 Arkansas Derby (G1) victor and Kentucky Derby third-place finisher Danza, multiple gradedstakes winner and 2013 Preakness (G1) runnerup Itsmyluckyday and multiple graded stakeswinning millionaire Majestic Harbor.

“When Ruler On Ice,

who was our first Classic horse, won the Belmont and then ran third in the Breeders’ Cup Classic, I’m not sure we really understood what an accomplishment that was,” Robinson said. “It’s becoming more and more apparent that these are great treats. When we got to Danza, it started to hit home a little bit. He got such a bad trip in the Derby.”

Robinson is the retired director of the graduate program for sports medicine at UNC-Chapel Hill and she served on the U.S. Olympic physiological testing committee.

“I worked for elite athletes for 25 years, so you’d think some things carry over [to Thoroughbreds],” said Robinson, whose husband is a retired engineer at General Telephone and Electronics.

The Robinsons, who operated a farm in North Carolina, moved to Kentucky and purchased the 600-acre Brandywine Farm in 1998.

You Ready To Take The Delicious Burger Challenge?

Turkey, Lamb and a juicy All-Beef patty will certainly steal the show very gently with a fork to combine, being careful not to overwork meat (which would make burgers dense).

Gently form meat into 4 equal-size patties, 4 inches in diameter and 1 inch thick. Press thumb in the center of each patty to make an indentation approximately 1/2-inch deep (this helps keep burgers flat during grilling).

Moisten a folded paper towel with oil; grasp with tongs and rub over grates. Season burgers with salt and pepper; grill until cooked throughout, 5 to 8 minutes per side. Serve on buns (toasted on grill, if you like), with desired toppings.

It’s a Sunday afternoon, and as your family tries to figure out what to have for dinner, you remember the article you saw in the South Florida Sun Times, offering up an array of burgers.

No sooner do you head to your local supermarket to pick up the ingredients to make a turkey burger, lamb burger or an all-beef burger, you cannot decide.

Well, we are hear today to refresh your memory a little.

Check out what we have to get your spring off to a great start:

SOUTHWESTERN TURKEY BURGER • 1½ lb. ground dark meat turkey (93% lean) • 1 jalapeno chile • 2 ounce grated Monterey Jack cheese • ¼ cup plain dried breadcrumbs • 2 tablespoons mayonnaise • Coarse salt and ground pepper • Vegetable oil • 4 Hamburger buns • Desired toppings

Heat grill to medium-high. In a medium bowl, place turkey, jalapeno, cheese, breadcrumbs, mayonnaise, 1 teaspoon coarse salt, and 1/4 teaspoon pepper. Mix

GREEK LAMB BURGER • 1 ½ pounds ground lamb • 1 small onion, minced • 1 garlic clove, minced • 3 tablespoons finely chopped mint • 3 tablespoons finely chopped flat-leaf parsley • Kosher salt and freshly ground pepper • Olive oil, for brushing • 4 pocketless pita breads or nan, about • 8 inches in diameter • 4 romaine lettuce leaves • 4 thin tomato slices • 4 paper-thin red onion slices • Yogurt-Cucumber Sauce

In a medium bowl, lightly knead the ground lamb with the onion, garlic, mint, parsley and 1 scant teaspoon each of salt and pepper. Shape the meat into 4 long oval patties about 1/2 inch thick, and transfer them to a plate lined with plastic wrap. Lightly brush the burgers with olive oil.

Light a grill. When the fire is medium hot, brush the grate with olive oil. Grill the lamb burgers for about 12 minutes, turning once, for medium meat. Move the burgers away from the heat and grill the pita until lightly toasted on both sides, about 1 minute.

Set the burgers on the pita breads and top them with the lettuce, tomato, onion and a spoonful of Yo-

gurt-Cucumber Sauce. Fold the pitas over the burgers and serve right away, passing the remaining yogurt sauce alongside.

DELICIOUS BEEF BURGER • 1 ½ pounds 80% lean ground beef chuck • Kosher salt and freshly ground pepper • 8 thin slices cheddar cheese (optional) • 4 soft sesame buns, split • Bibb lettuce and sliced tomato, for topping

Sprinkle the ground beef evenly with 1/2 teaspoon salt in a large bowl. Gently form the meat into 4 balls, then lightly press into 4-inch-wide, 1-inch-thick patties.

Make a 2-inch-wide indentation in the center of each with your thumb to prevent the burgers from bulging when grilled.

Preheat a grill to high. Season the patties with salt and pepper. Grill, undisturbed, until marked on the bottom, 3 to 5 minutes. Turn and grill until the other side is marked and the patties feel firm, 3 to 5 more minutes; if desired, top each burger with 2 slices cheese during the last 2 minutes of cooking and cover with a disposable aluminum pan to melt.

Serve the patties on the buns; top with lettuce and tomato.

Fiber: What it is and why you need more of it in your diet (BPT) - Eat more fiber.

If your doctor didn't give you this advice at your last checkup, she probably should have: 97 percent of Americans don't get the recommended daily amount of dietary fiber they need to stay healthy. But what is fiber, and why is it good for you?

Dietary fiber, sometimes called "roughage," is a plant-based carbohydrate found in fruits, vegetables, beans, nuts, seeds and whole grains such as rice and wheat.

Our bodies have a difficult time digesting fiber, which is actually a good thing - as fiber passes through the body undigested, it does a lot of good along the way!

Fiber has many

proven health benefits. It has been shown to improve heart health, lower cholesterol, control blood sugar, decrease the risk of stroke, help you feel fuller longer, prevent constipation and boost digestive health and your immune system.

Experts like the Food and Drug Administration recommend we consume about 28 grams of fiber each day - which, it turns out, is a lot of food. You'd have to eat about 94 baby carrots, 47 stalks of celery, or 15 slices of whole-wheat bread to get your daily dose of fiber from food alone!

To help people get the fiber they need, the FDA has approved seven ingredients that can be taken as supplements or added to food to boost

the amount of dietary fiber they contain. One of those ingredients you may find on your food label is cellulose gel, or microcrystalline cellulose.

Cellulose gel is derived from cellulose, an essential component of fruits, vegetables and trees. In fact, cellulose is so important to plants in nature, it is the most abundant organic compound on Earth!

Is seaweed really the next superfood?
