A lifeline for any community
Area chambers of commerce have become a bridge between businesses and residents
By Larry Blustein sfsuntimes@aol.com They host business card exchanges, grand openings and ribbon cuttings, but how vital are chambers of commerces to the city and community you live in? From as early as the 1950’s and 60’s, the chambers of commerce in any South Florida city, was a lifeline to promoting the community and its many businesses. While the objective has never changed, many local chambers have had to switch direction and bridge the business community with the residents. One of the area organizations to do that early on, was the Greater Hollywood Chamber of Commerce. An innovative group, there was a need to not only promote the local businesses, but to get Hollywood residents involved, by
planning and hosting events. Through the years, Hollywood has become an event city, and while much is run by the City of Hollywood, it’s the hard work and dedication of longtime CEO/Executive Anne Hotte, COO Marie Suarez and their staff that have elevated this group to an elite level. This is an organization that has raised money for scholarships and has found a way to bring the entire community together - via Leadership Hollywood and many other programs. April Evans recently moved to Hollywood from Pompano Beach. She had been involved with chambers since her family business began back in the 1970’s. She knows how vital the busiChamber, Page 7A
