By Larry Blustein sfsuntimes@aol.com As the tourists are starting to empty out from their slice of heaven here in south Florida - and head back home - year round residents will now brace for the reality of hurricane season.

As we needed a reminder of how unsettling those six months can be, Hurricane Michael, which devastated a swath of the Florida Panhandle last fall, was upgraded to a Category 5 storm this past week, only the fourth to make recorded landfall in the United States and the first since 1992.

The announcement last Friday came as no surprise to those still struggling to recover from the storm’s destruction.

National Hurricane Center scientists conducted a detailed post-storm analysis for Hurricane Michael, which made landfall near

Mexico Beach and Tyndall Air Force Base on Oct. 10, 2018. They’ve determined that its estimated intensity at landfall

was 160 mph (257 kph), a 5 mph (8 kph) increase over the operational estimate used last fall, NOAA said in a news release.

That puts Michael just barely over the 157 mph (252 kph) threshold for a category 5 hurricane.

That news, coupled

with the recent prediction for the new season - starting on June 1 - has put Storm, Page 7A

of achieving the American dream! In 1995, she graduated from the University of Miami with a degree in Communications and Political Science. She then became a successful Journalist as an Assignment Editor, Producer and Reporter at South Florida television networks for 15years.

“I learned this work ethic from both of my parents and it’s something that I have continued to live by,” Karla explained. “My mom came here and cleaned houses, my dad worked at restaurants and I saw this all unfold and that inspired me to be the very best I can.”

Work ethic is indeed something that many miss out on, but for Karla, who saw her mother sell sandwiches out of a lunch wagon and then become a Nurse after going to night school for years; it was just the motivation and character-building that has been a trademark in her professional life.

“When you see people that you love and care about so much, working their fingers to the bone to make a better life, those are the things that stick with you and have for many years,” Karla pointed out. “For me, graduating from college and working in the media really shaped me for the future.”

From media to marketing work and just about everything else in between, Karla shattered that glass ceiling and showed what women can do in a society that males have dominated for generations.

THE GREAT HOWARD DAVIS JR. Karla’s life path really changed when she left her journalism career to launch a successful MMA professional fight company: Fight Time Promotions. That was a move that really surprised many, including her mother, who had long been the rock and her support.

The company’s popular events were featured on CBS Sports, FoxSportsNet and HBO Plus just to name a few.

The company was a true labor of love; as she worked alongside Howard Davis Jr., 1976 Boxing Olympic Gold Medalist.

Her association with the legendary boxing champ led to something more. Her passion for life, hard work and challenges brought this TV personality into gyms and seated at some of the best fights in the world.

Karla’s admiration for the sport and for what Davis had accomplished, brought their relationship to another level - when they married and had a daughter in 2010.

Karla and Howard had built the No. 1 MMA show in Florida, and everyone wanted be a part of it - including major sponsors such as JM Lexus and Jack Daniels.

With everything going so well, and Karla a happy mother and wife, the first major life obstacle came about when Davis Jr., was diagnosed with Stage 4 lung cancer in 2015.

“You talk about news hitting like a ton of bricks,” Karla recalled. “I had noticed that Howard had been getting tired a lot and we needed to find out what it was. I remember this so vividly - because I left him at the doctor’s

office for tests and when I came back, I was hit in the face with the news.”

With fundraisers to pay for the high cost of non-traditional treatments, Karla prepared herself and her daughter, Samiha, for life without someone who had been such a difference maker in their lives. Tragically, Davis Jr., passed away from lung cancer 10 months later.

“If I didn’t have my mother for support and daughter to remind me how special Howard was, I don’t know what would have happened,” Karla said. “We stayed with the MMA business for a while, but it wasn’t the same without him.”

As she pondered her future, it was something that she was told that stuck in her head. Because of her passion, zest for life and embracing new challenges, real estate was thought to be her calling - and they were right.

After being a successful agent; she decided to go to the next level as a Broker and launched I Love Mi Casa Realty, LLC in dedication of her late husband’s memory.

Like anything that Karla Guadamuz-Davis has done in her productive career, real estate was a natural progression. Here love for people, telling the truth and dealing with the positives has given her business a major advantage.

“What I have done is fully immerse myself in real estate, knowing the market from top to bottom,” she said.

“The one thing that has helped me to raise the bar in anything that I do is having support. When we hire our agents, they have to be on the same page and share the same strong work ethic and commitment to excellence that make I Love Mi Casa Realty a top boutique real estate agency.”

In 2018, Karla was the top agent in her office and was launching her own company with a brand that’s establishing her business as one of the best in South Florida.

She was happy, surrounded by her family and a great support staff. But that all changed when her mother, Gloria, was diagnosed with Leukemia. She passed three years to the day that her husband died.

“That was something that could have easily pushed me over the edge,” Karla recalled. “My rock and someone who had taught me everything, was gone. But the things that my mother had taught me through the years are what drives me today.”

way they have opened their arms for her new business is something that she wanted to let people know.

At the grand opening a few months ago, it was the Greater Hallandale Beach Chamber of Commerce that made the event special - with employees and area dignitaries coming to the ribbon cutting, and that meant so much to Karla and her employees.

In addition, another positive in the business has been being branded by Zillow as a top agent, which has been a vital tool in buying and selling and has helped Karla work toward her goal of expanding her brand.

We had a great turnout and that is thanks to our Parks and Police Departments, as well as our Police Athletic League (PAL) and the Rotary Club of Hallandale BeachAventura. They put together a high-energy event featuring an egg hunt, breakfast with the Easter Bunny and a cookie decorating booth. Vice Mayor Javellana and Commissioners Lazarow and Butler were in attendance and Im sure they enjoyed the event as much as I did. Be

We held our annual Hurricane Forum last week. This event serves to remind all of us about the importance of being prepared for this upcoming hurricane season.

The City Commission had the pleasure of honoring and meeting our Police Explorers during last week’s Commission meeting. The Explorers are a group of dedicated young adults that participate in an outreach program administered by our Police Department. The

program is managed by Sergeant Smith, Officer Rose and Community Service Aide Clark. The group meets every Tuesday to learn about law enforcement, the value of community service, CPR and how they can become mentors and leaders in their community. Thank you for your hard work! The Commission also recognized the City’s own Yvonne Feijoo as the 2018 State of Florida Fire Educator of the Year. What an incredible accomplishment!

I am excited to welcome yet another new business to our City! Jewelry Depot opened its doors last Thursday and is located at 250 North Federal Highway. Be sure to stop by and welcome them to the Hallandale Beach community.

Earth Day is right around the corner and we would like to invite you to celebrate our beautiful planet at the 10th Annual Green Fest. The event will take place this upcoming Saturday from 10am-2pm at the City Hall complex. There is a ton going on! ‘Roz’ Amunategui: She Meant So Much To Her Family, Community Her smile was contagious. No matter where she went, she had kind and encouraging words for everyone.

What Rosalind (Roz) Amunategui had become in South Florida was someone who everyone gravitated to. Because of her endless quest to make everything around her better, those she touched in her life will forever be grateful.

Surrounded by her family, Roz Amunategui, passed away peacefully on April 17, after a battle with Stage 4 Cancer.

Born February 25, 1940, in The Bronx, New York, to Sidney and Beatrice Indig, Roz grew up in Jamaica Estates, NY, graduating Jamaica High School.

She went on to be a successful Real Estate agent / Broker for 40 years, helping people find their places of retreat.

Her many hobbies included rollerblading, playing handball on the courts along Garfield St. in Hollywood, and enjoying Mah Jong at the Hemispheres.

In addition, Roz loved tennis playing at Golden Isles with “The Golden Girls” and at the Diplomat, receiving many awards and honors - including reaching the nationals in California at the age of 70!

What made Roz the happiest was serving the City of Hallandale Beach in many ways, including being a

part of the Parks and Recreation Department, touching many children’s lives.

Her many endeavors also took Roz to the Kiwanis Club of Hallandale Beach, giving back to the community she loved so much was important to her.

“Roz always had that smile on her face,” said longtime Kiwanis member and South Florida Sun Times Columnist, Stephen Cummings. “No matter what the event was that we hosted, Roz was right in the middle of it - doing her part to elevate the Kiwanis and those involved.”

Those who knew her through the years looked at Roz as someone who lived her life with a forgiving heart and she was always there with a big smile when you needed her.

“I knew Roz for over 30 years and she was always searching for ways to make her community better,” said South Florida Sun Times Editor, Larry Blustein.

“No matter what it was - from supporting causes - to helping with events, she was always the first smiling face you saw. She will be missed.”

Roz is survived by her much beloved four children and their families; Dr. Joseph (Kimberly) Amunategui, (Alexandria, Joseph, Rocco and Victoria); Dr. Andrew (Lee Ann) Amunategui, (Andrew, Nicolas and Matthew); Stacey (Lonny) Reiter; and Michael (Angelika) Amunategui, (Angelica and Michael). Roz also leaves behind sis-

ters, Sandra Indig L.P. and Toby (Gary) Indig Kronick and Goddaughter, Stephanie (Douglas) Comings (Alyssa and Jessica); nieces and nephews.

She was devoted to her family and will be greatly missed by all of her family and the friends whose lives she touched. Her grandkids knew of “Glam Ma” for her always bedazzled and classy nature.

Past Mayor Joy Cooper called her “Hot lips Houlahan”, for her playful Hallandale Halloween costume! All who were able to be in her presence have felt luckier for being so.

Susan Hummer, 76, Longtime Florida Resident Susan Hummer’s passion for tennis, golf, playing cards and sewing were things that she will always be remembered for.

The North Port, Fl. resident always found a way to keep busy and active and for the past 18 years, she met plenty of friends who became a huge part of her life.

Born in Brooklyn, N.Y. on October 7, 1942, Hummer recently passed away at the age of 76, on April 15, 2019.

After losing her husband (Sonny Hummer) in August of 2014, Hummer also lost her parents. Before coming to Florida, she lived in Clinton N.J. and Washington N.J. Hummer leaves behind her sister Eleanore Teabo, who lives in Mount Laurel NJ., brother Thomas Flecker – from Outer Banks S.C., oldest daughter, Deborah Jurgensen, sonin law Mike, who is from Easton PA., younger daughter, Joanne Swayze, son-in law David from Shelbyville IN. - as well as three grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

Hollywood Police, DEA Prescription Take Back

Hollywood - The Hollywood Police Department is participating in the National DEA Prescription Drug Take Back Event on Saturday, April 27th from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. in the lobby of Police Headquarters, located at 3250 Hollywood Boulevard just west of I-95. The Take Back Event is an opportunity for individuals to dispose of old, expired, or unused medications in a safe manner. No liquids or needles, only pills and patches will be accepted. This is a free service, and no questions will be asked.

As many longtime residents of Miami-Dade and Broward will remember, Hurricane Andrew, which was a quick moving storm that spawned dozens of tornadoes, boosted some wind speed past 175 mph.

“You would be surprised what information you can pick up at one of those hurricane preevents,” paredness Laynie Thomas of Hollywood said. “I took my 12 and 15-year-olds to last year’s seminar and we all learned a few things, like having evacuation plans in place. We live near the water and have to know more than most who live further inland.”

Hummus Taken To A Delicious & Different Level Take A Break From Tradition - Try White Bean, Black Bean & Sweet Potato

When it comes to he traditional hummus, garbanzo bean - or chickpea - is still the favorite, but you would be surprised at how many different taste treats you can come up with.

Today, we bring you a few recipes that will certainly be a huge hit at your next family gathering or just a few friends. Check these out:

BLACK BEAN HUMMUS • 1 cup cooked black beans • 1 garlic clove, minced • 2 tablespoons olive oil • 2 tablespoons lemon juice • 1 tablespoon white wine vinegar • 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin • Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper • 1/2 head iceberg lettuce, cut into wedges

Blend all the ingredients, except the lettuce, in a food processor until almost smooth. Let sit for 15

minutes before serving with iceberg lettuce wedges .

SWEET POTATO HUMMUS • 1 cup mashed, cooked sweet potato • (about 1 medium sized potato; • baked or steamed) • 1 3/4 cups cooked chickpeas (or 1 15-ounce • can chickpeas, rinsed and drained well) • 1/4 cup tahini • 2 tablespoons freshly squeezed lemon juice • 1 clove garlic, roughly chopped • 1/2 teaspoon salt • 1 teaspoon toasted sesame oil • 1/3 cup water • Sweet or smoked ground paprika, for garnish

Place all ingredients except for the water in a food processor fitted with the S blade. Pulse a few times to break the chickpeas down.

Run the motor of the food processor and drizzle

the water in a thin stream. Continue processing for 2-3 minutes, or until the hummus is completely smooth. Sprinkle with paprika and serve. Leftover hummus will keep in an airtight container in the fridge for up to five days.

WHITE BEAN HUMMUS • 1 (24-ounce) can cannellini beans • 1 lemon, juiced • 1 teaspoon ground cumin • 2 garlic cloves, chopped • 1/2 cup tahini paste • Salt and pepper • 1/2 cup extra-virgin olive oil

Put the beans into the bowl of a food processor.

Add the lemon juice, cumin, garlic, tahini paste, and salt and pepper, to taste. Turn the processor on and slowly pour in the olive oil. Process until smooth and thick.

Hollywood - In celebration of Earth Day and Arbor Day, FuntaHstic Friday is Going Green at the ArtsPark at Young Circle in Downtown Hollywood on Friday, April 26th beginning at 5 p.m. In addition to the usual kid-friendly Funtastic Friday events, the City’s Green Team Advisory Committee has organized environmental exhibits and activities from area schools, environmental and community organizations.

“Chasing Coral” was filmed over a three year period in 30 countries and includes underwater footage from

Can a Nurse Registry provide home health services?

Absolutely. We provide professional nurses to assess your needs and aides who are carefully screened for the home or for private duty while in the hospital.

As an example, Always Classic Care was referred a case a few weeks ago.

The client had recent falls and the family was asking for 24-hour assistance in the home. We interviewed the family member as to the patient’s personality, medical condition and personal needs.

Learning that the patient had long term care insurance, our staff helped the family initiate insurance, and assigned

an appropriate aide in record time. Our RN visited the client within 3 hours since there was a safety issue involved (usual RN visit is within 48 hours).

Upon assessment, the nurse advised the client to go to the ER and reported the same to her family. The client was admitted. Her aide was able to stay with her in the hospital, assisted with her transfer home, and home care for her is now ongoing.

This continuity of care is of utmost importance in situations like this. It is of tremendous benefit for the patient and provides confidence for her family, who live out of the area and feel assured that their mom is being taken care of under supervision of a professional nurse registry with whom they can communicate.

I don’t need anyone to help me with my shower or getting dressed. I also can put light meals together or pop frozen

dinners or restaurant leftovers in the microwave. What I need is someone to drive me shopping, for errands and to doctor appointments. I also need someone to clean my apartment, because I can’t really do it anymore. Can you help me with this?

These are considered private services. Always Classic Care can provide them for you with carefully screened people at a reasonable outof-pocket cost. (BPT) - As we age, we begin to learn - sometimes firsthand - how devastating a fall can be. It isn't quite as easy as it once was to hop back up and continue on our way.

Each year, more than one in four Americans aged 65 and over experience a fall, which contributes to roughly 3 million emergency room visits and nearly 30,000 deaths per year, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

While the majority of falls are non-life-threatening, they can take a serious toll on quality of life and independence.

The good news, however, is that most falls are preventable.

"Being aware of the risk factors and taking the proper precautions can reduce your chances of serious injury, and help you maintain and improve the quality of your health and remain independent," said Dr. James Metcalf, a medical director with UnitedHealthcare Medicare & Retirement.

Over the next month, here is a challenge to our readers to try to follow these simple health tips.

Here's how it works: Try one tip each day, starting today.

Cut portions.

If you think leaving just a little something on your plate won't matter, think again. It will. Small amounts of uneaten food add up to calories that stay on the plate – not on you.

Have a vegetable at breakfast.

Most people save their veggies for dinner, but it's healthful to think outside the cereal bowl and veg out at breakfast. For example, add a sliced tomato to your cheese sandwich or

Flip the package over.

Read nutrition labels to see what's really in your food. Don't be fooled by a flashy front-of-package claim.

Have a superfood.

Get big on beans.

Beans are the most undervalued food in the supermarket. They are inexpensive, easy to store, rich in protein and fiber, and taste so good.
