TRAGEDY STRIKES AGAIN

Another Reminder That Hate & Anti-Semitism Is Not Going Away

By Larry Blustein sfsuntimes@aol.com For those who hate and are sick enough to carry out acts of violence in houses of worship, there are no words.

This past Saturday, when Jews across the world were celebrating the last day of Passover - and remembering those who have sacrificed their lives in the name of hate and anti semitism, it happened again.

A lone gunman with an agenda to kill Jews in Poway, Ca., carried out this act, taking one life and injuring several others - including a 9-year-old and Brooklyn native Rabbi Yisroel Goldstein, who moved to this small community northeast of San Diego 30 years ago because it was safe.

In what is becoming too familiar all over the world, preventing this from happening will be nearly impossible - no matter how much gun laws are changed.

What happened in California is something that nobody should go through, but this is 2019 - and with mentally unstable people running around with agendas of their own, you can change all the gun laws and add all the security you want.

As we have talked about over and over again - this is a problem that will not go away. There is no way on earth that any of us can guard against what happened last Saturday - on the Sabbath - in a house of worship - when praying and giving thanks was disrupted by someone with an agenda.

On Saturday Rabbi Goldstein had just finished comforting a congregant as she prepared to say the traditional prayer for the dead in honor of her mother when life changed.

Johnny Moreno was at the Pulse Nightclub in Orlando in the days after the tragic shooting, trying to make some sense of what happened. As he talked to police, clergy and residents - gun control was certainly an issue - but not the only topic that was talked about.

“What I wanted to know - not just in Orlando or Pittsburgh or Parkland was the motivation behind these violent acts that took lives and changed the course of the future,” Moreno explained. “What it comes down to in many circles - besides the obvious mental health - is what we are taught. Teaching your children to be kind, to be aware of other people’s feelings, to give back and to take care of others is certainly something to start with.”

Teaching anyone to respect all people or all races creeds and colors may not stop this hate from happening, but it will curb some from talking bad about others or to express hate.

There are lots or people in the world that need care and help. When someone volunteers their time and energy to help someone else — hearts are healed and hatred dissipates. It’s hard to hate when you see people care about you. We must start listening to other people with an open mind and trying to understand their world, their perspective.

Hate tears society along racial, ethnic, gender, and religious lines. The U.S. Department of Justice warned

that hate crimes, more than any other crime, can trigger community conflict, civil disturbances, and even riots. For all their “patriotic” rhetoric, hate groups and their imitators are really trying to divide us; their views are fundamentally anti-democratic. True patriots fight hate.

Take seriously the smallest hint of hate — even what appears to be simple name-calling. Slurs often escalate to harassment, harassment to threats, and threats to physical violence.

“Victims of hate crimes often feel terribly alone and afraid,” Moreno pointed out. “They have been attacked simply for being who they are — for their disability, their ethnicity, their sexual orientation. Often, hate attacks include vicious symbols: a burning cross, a noose, a swastika. Such symbols evoke a history of hatred. They also reverberate beyond individual victims, leaving entire communities vulnerable and afraid.”

In closing, while some of the things that President Trump says and does angers many, to hold him responsible for this - or any other unspeakable act - is not valid. Many people in this world say things that may get blood boiling, but unless there is mental instability in someone - people do not carry out these acts!

Quiet Zones To Go Into Effect Saturday, May 18th in Hollywood

The final safety upgrades to the Florida East Coast (FEC) rail corridor have been completed, prompting the Quiet Zones to go into effect at midnight on Saturday, May 18, 2019.

As a region, South Florida will have the single longest Quiet Zone in the country with 10.

Quiet Zones are designated stretches of a 1/2 a mile of railway track around a public crossing, where the routine sounding of train horns is not required on approach. Quiet Zones will be along the entire stretch of FEC tracks through the City of Hollywood at all public rail crossing.

Minimum warning devices for public crossings designated as Quiet Zones can include flashing light signals, bells, digital signs, fourquadrant gates, raised medians and curbs, constant warning time train detection circuitry and power-off indicators

visible to the train crew.

Since 2005, communities across the country have been establishing Quiet Zones as more and more railway agencies have been installing the minimum required safety features so train engineers don't have to blow their horns as a warning. Engineers will still be allowed to use their horn in emergency situations.

While Quiet Zones provide an equal or greater amount of safety at public crossings, this change to the status quo should also serve as a warning to those

crossing railway tracks.

When pedestrians and motorists see railway tracks, they should always think about a train.

Always stop and look before crossing the tracks, never go around gates and do not, under any circumstance, attempt to beat the train across the tracks. Wait your turn and allow the train to pass.

Annual Water Line Flushing Program Set To Begin - Sunday, May 19th through Wednesday, July 3rd

Hollywood – The City of Hollywood Department of Public Utilities will begin its Annual Free Chlorine Line Flushing Program on Sunday, May 19, 2019. The free chlorine portion of this program will end on Friday, June 21, 2019. If necessary, flushing may continue across the City through Wednesday, July 3rd to achieve optimal system maintenance.

The Annual Flushing Program is used to help rid the water distribution pipelines of any accumulated sediments. The hydrant flushing may temporarily cause cloudy or discolored water, which should clear in a few hours after flushing. The cloudiness is due to sediment in the pipelines and is not harmful or hazardous.

Typically, flushing will take place in the evening hours between 9:00 p.m. and 2:00 a.m. when the demand for water is low. Residents may notice a change in the look and/or taste of their water during this time.

PLEASE NOTE: The City will discontinue Free Chlorination as of June 21, 2019. Owners and managers of businesses with fish and shellfish holding tanks and users of kidney dialysis machines are advised that regular methods for testing and removing free chlorine will not be effective during the remainder of the flushing period. It will be necessary to test and adjust for chloramines after June 21, 2019.

Thank you to the Public Works team, led by Alyssa Jones-Wood, for their hard work bringing this event together. I’m already looking forward to next year.

Hollywood Designated ‘Florida Green’ City by Florida Green Building Coalition

HOLLYWOOD - The Florida Green Building Coalition (FGBC), the leading certifier of green projects in the state, has designated Hollywood, Fla. a “Florida Green” local government.

The city achieved 32 percent of its 311 applicable points, earning them a Silver-level designation. The City of Hollywood has been a certified green city since 2012.

In a presentation to the city commission C. J. Davila, FGBC executive director said: “The FGBC Green Local Government program is truly unique within the country. It creates an environment of communication and coordination amongst

FPL Hardens Hollywood Area Ahead of The Storm Season Florida Power & Light Company (FPL) continues to upgrade its system in the Hollywood area as part of its ongoing work to strengthen the energy grid and improve the reliability of its service for customers. Company investments, which include strengthening power lines and poles, trimming trees near power lines and installing smart grid technology, help make the grid more reliable day-to-day and speed restoration efforts following major storms.

"We continue to build one of the nation’s strongest, smartest and most storm-resilient energy grids to provide our customers with reliable service year-round, while keeping our typical residential bills among the lowest in the country," said Eric Silagy, president and CEO of FPL. "Our ongoing investments in strengthening the grid and using advanced smart grid technology continue to help us deliver electricity our customers can count on in good weather and bad.

2019 IMPROVEMENTS IN THE HOLLYWOOD AREA During this year, FPL plans to make the following improvements in and near Hollywood: Strengthening nine main power lines, including those that serve critical services that are necessary for communities to recover faster after major storms.

Clearing tree branches and vegetation — a major cause of power outages — from 227 miles of power lines.

Inspecting 5,797 power poles and strengthening or replacing those that no longer meet FPL’s standards for strength.

Installing smart grid technology, including 13 automated switches on main and neighborhood power lines to help detect problems and restore service faster when outages occur.

Inspecting eight main power lines and equipment using infrared technology to detect issues before they cause a power interruption.

When the planned 2019 work is completed, FPL will have made the following improvements in and near Hollywood since the historic 2004-2005 hurricane seasons: Strengthened 27 main power lines, including those that serve critical service.

Cleared tree branches and vegetation from 2,620 miles of power lines, an average of 201 miles per year.

Installed smart grid technology, including 1,627 automated switches on main and neighborhood power lines.

Inspected 138 main power lines and equipment using infrared technology.

As a lesson learned from Hurricane Irma, the company started the Storm Secure Underground Program, a three-year pilot that focuses on using new technologies and processes to find less expensive ways to underground neighborhood power lines, which will further enhance customers’ service reliability and the energy grid’s resiliency. The pilot is focusing on areas that experienced an outage during Hurricanes Matthew and/or Irma, and have a history of outages caused primarily by vegetation, which in Florida grows year-round. This year, six projects are planned in Hollywood.

“FPL is a national leader in the reliability of service to its customers, but we’re never satisfied,” said Manny Miranda, senior vice president of power delivery for FPL. “We continue to implement projects that have demonstrated their value to our customers, while looking at the latest technology and lessons learned from past storms to develop new ways of enhancing the reliability of our service.”

To date 88 local municipalities, city and county, have participated in the FGBC “Florida Green” Local Government program.

The green certification program scores the city’s sustainability in terms of categories. These categories include: Energy efficiency, Water, Economic Development, Tourism, Emergency Management, Planning and Zoning and many more. In each category there are points that can be achieved.

The Florida Green Building Coalition was formed

in 2000 and is the leading certifying agency for green building within the state of Florida having just surpassed 19,000 projects.

FGBC is by far the largest certifier of green residential and commercial construction, residential communities and local governments in the state.

Unlike other national and international certifications, FGBC five certifications are the only standards developed with Florida-specific criteria. They address the state’s hot-humid climate, environment, unique topography, geology and natural disasters.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Broward County Names Big Brother and Big Sister of the Year

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Broward County recently chose two stand-out mentors – Big Brother Steven Samuels and Big Sister Quanese Alexander – as the 2019 Big Brother and Big Sister of the Year.

Chosen from more than 1,000 mentors who partici-

pate in the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Broward County program, Samuels and Alexander epitomize what it means to be a “Big” mentor.

“Steven and Quanese completely go above and beyond for the children they mentor,” said Ana M. Cedeno, President and CEO of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Broward County.

“We know that their Big-Little connections will positively influence these children for a lifetime. We are so proud to honor them.”

Samuels, a CPA and resident of Parkland, said he found out about the Big Brothers Big Sisters program from a longtime men-

tor who serves on the organization’s board of directors.

“For years he had told me about his lifetime of unforgettable Big experiences, how he has mentored and followed his many Littles from their childhood through adulthood and how much joy and pride these experiences had given him,” said Samuels. “He continually suggested that I consider becoming a Big – I finally agreed to give it a shot.”

Samuels was paired with Trent in 2014, who was then 9. Over the last four-and-a-half years, the two have spent time together at soccer games, movies, science museums

and many other activities.

Samuels helps Trent, who has ADHD, harness his boundless energy, while offering sound life skills advice.

“I have learned from Steve that you don't always get what you want,” said Trent, now 13. “He taught me that’s it’s important to appreciate what you have.”

Big Sister of the Year Quanese Alexander, a Hollywood resident and entrepreneur with a fragrance line, has been matched with Solielle, 12, for two years.

“I’ve always had a passion for helping others” said Alexander. “We all need someone to talk to ,

show they care and help encourage you. I’m so grateful to be able to be a Big Sister to Solielle, who is an amazing child.”

Solielle, who noted that her outings with Quanese are always “super fun,” also feels completely connected to her Big. “Quanese is my best friend,” she said. “I talk to her when I am feeling sad and down, and she’s always there to cheer me up.

I can be insecure, and she provides a safe place for me to feel free to open up about my feelings. I think everybody deserves to have someone that they can trust with their feelings.”

BCPS and Broward Teachers Union Announce Tentative Contract Agreements

Broward County Public Schools (BCPS) and Broward Teachers Union (BTU) are pleased to announce tentative contract agreements for the Educational Professional bargaining unit represented by the BTU. The tentative contract agreements represent the shared commitment of BCPS and the BTU toward ensuring every student receives the best possible education in safe and secure learning environments.

HIGHER WAGES Most educators will receive an across the board 2.16% base salary increase; Pay for Performance Highly Effective educators will receive a 2.17% salary increase; and Pay for Performance Effective teachers will receive a 1.6% salary increase for the fiscal year 18/19 effective from January 1, 2019.

They will also receive referendum supplements ranging from $2,300 to $8,000 effective July 1, 2019. Referendum fund-

ing will be available for the bargaining unit all four years of the Referendum (2019/20 – 2022/23) at the same level negotiated in the 2018/19 re-opener.

Specific distribution of referendum amounts will be negotiated each year.

In addition, the District will reopen negotiations for 2019/20 for any additional increase as soon as the legislature finalizes its budget deliberations.

INSURANCE PLANS The District will continue to pay 100% of the cost of health insurance for employee-only coverage throughout 2019. Thereafter, the District and BTU will work collaboratively to implement cost effective improvements to the plan.

IMPROVEMENTS TO TEACHERS’ EVALUATIONS The School Board and Teachers Union agreed to adjust all three components of the evaluation system for the 2018/19 school year, which will result in a higher percentage of Highly Effective

teachers and afford them a better opportunity to earn Best and Brightest awards.

“The dedication of our teachers and instructional staff is evident each and every day in their efforts to ensure our students receive a world-class education to prepare them for their futures,” said Superintendent Robert W. Runcie. “The School Board and I are excited to reach the tentative contract agreements and commend both negotiating teams for their efforts during negotiations.”

“We’re pleased to have reached tentative agreements with the District,” said BTU President Anna Fusco. “Our bargaining team worked very hard and we appreciated the activism of our members throughout the negotiation process.”

Upon successful ratifications by the bargaining unit and School Board approval, the District will work to provide the agreed upon salary increases as soon as possible.

Tasty Cocktails For Saturday’s Kentucky Derby

If you are one of those sports fans who loves to hosts a party, this Saturday’s annual running of the Kentucky Derby may be something to look forward to.

From great racing to tremendous parties, this is a day that is also about food and of course - delicious drinks. Here some some cocktails that everyone will love.

DERBY DAY MINT JULEP • 2 cups sugar • 2 cups water • Sprigs of fresh mint • Crushed ice • Your Favorite Blend of Whisky • Silver Julep Cups

Make a simple syrup by boiling sugar and water together for five minutes. Cool and place in a covered container with six or eight sprigs of fresh mint, then refrigerate overnight. Make one julep at a time by filling a julep cup with crushed ice, adding one tablespoon mint syrup and two ounces of Old Forester Kentucky Whisky. Stir rapidly with a spoon to frost

the outside of the cup. Garnish with fresh mint.

MOJITO • 12 fresh mint leaves • 2 teaspoons granulated sugar • 1/2 lime, cut into 3 wedges • 2 tablespoons (1 ounce) rum • 1/2 cup club soda • 3/4 cup ice

Place mint leaves in a tall glass. Add sugar and lime wedges. Muddle well with a wooden spoon or a muddler (see Note).

Add remaining ingredients then stir well and serve immediately.

Note: Muddling means to mash the ingredients together. Muddlers are available at most kitchenware stores, but a wooden spoon works fine. If you'd like, garnish with an additional sprig of mint and/or a lime slice.

STRAWBERRY MARGARITA • 3/4 cup tequila • 1/4 cup triple sec

1/4 cup lime juice 1/3 cup sugar 1 cup fresh strawberries + extra for garnish 5 cups ice cubes

In a blender, combine tequila, triple sec, lime juice, sugar, 1 cup strawberries, and the ice cubes; blend until well mixed and thick.

Pour into glasses and garnish with strawberries.

Serve immediately.

REFRESHING LEMONADE • 3/4 cup sugar • 1 cup hot water • 4 cups cold water • 1/2 cup fresh lemon juice • 1 lemon, thinly sliced

In a pitcher, combine the sugar and hot water, stirring until the sugar has dissolved.

Add cold water, lemon juice, and lemon slices; mix well.

Serve, or chill until ready to serve.

Makes about 1-1/2 quarts.

Microchipped Dog Is Reunited After 2 Years!

Lost Microchipped Dog from Southwest Ranches found in Colorado 2 years later and Reunited with family.

Fort Lauderdale – Two years ago, the Peterson family of Southwest Ranches experienced a horrible loss. Their 4 month old German shepherd puppy, Cedar, disappeared from their property and they believe she was stolen, as their other dogs were still at home, but their front gate left open. After frantically searching for weeks, hiring a pet detective and posting flyers everywhere, they weren’t sure if they would ever see Cedar again. Fast forward to Hugo, Colorado – more than 1,900 miles away where a county marshal found a dog in a snow covered ditch.

The marshal took the dog to a veterinary hospital where she was scanned for a microchip that was traced back to Dr. Balasky’s office in Davie, a South Florida vet who had implanted the chip when Cedar was a puppy.

The Peterson family were thrilled, but a bit shocked when they received the call in late March that Cedar had been found, but are unsure how she ended up

in Colorado.

Thanks to Wings of Rescue, Cloud Nine Rescue Flights and the Humane Society of Broward County, Cedar was flown to South Florida on Saturday, April 20th where she was reunited with her family on the tarmac at Fort Lauderdale ExecuCedar tive Airport. wagged her tail as she left the plane, and gave a few barks to pilot Ted DuPuis as if to thank him for bringing her home.

Microchipping your pet is an essential way to prove ownership and help reunite lost pets.

The Humane Society of Broward County offers microchipping for owned pets Monday – Friday – no appointment necessary and the cost is $20 plus tax.

WINGS OF RESCUE Wings of Rescue is a donation-based charity flying large scale transports of endangered pets from overcrowded shelters and disaster areas to shelters where there is empty kennel space and where no local shelter pets are displaced by the flights.

Founded in 2012, Wings of Rescue has a squadron of volunteer pilots flying rescue missions in their own planes as well as a fleet of chartered cargo planes. Since inception, 35,000 shelter pets have flown to safety. All personnel at Wings of Rescue are unpaid volunteers and the organization relies entirely on donations to fly its lifesaving missions.

DREAM CAR CLASSIC SUNDAY, MAY 5 On Sunday, May 5th the monthly Downtown Hollywood Dream Car Classic takes place along Hollywood Boulevard between 19th and 20th Avenues from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. The Dream Car Classic features dozens of classic cars, trucks and other one-of-a-kind vehicles on display. Attendance is free.

There is a $20.00 charge for those who wish to have their vehicles on display.

Stop by to see the City’s new electric shuttle “The Sun Shuttle” by Circuit. An
