Teachers & Guns Not A Popular Choice Miami-Dade & Broward Opt To Let Professionals Handle Campus Security
By Larry Blustein sfsuntimes@aol.com It is an emotional topic that many have weighed in on, and last week, the state of Florida had its say. Florida’s legislature passed a bill allowing teachers to carry guns in the classroom, expanding a program launched after the deadly high school shooting at Douglas High in Parkland - with the aim of preventing another such massacre. That news was met with mixed reactions and emotions, and despite Broward County being the epicenter for this horrible tragedy that took 17 lives, School Superintendent Robert Runcie said thanks, but no thanks to the bill. Along with Miami-Dade School Superintendent Albert Carvalho, both agreed that arming teachers at their schools, would not happen, and despite some anger from many who had supported it, you will NOT see this in the two largest school districts in Florida. “From what I’ve heard from a number of my colleagues, particularly here in the south Florida community, we will not be opting into the program” said Carvalho in a statement this past week. “I think they’ve paid close attention to the stakeholder communities of

Understanding Periodontal Disease Like diabetes, periodontal disease can be a warning. As detailed by the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research, gum disease starts when bacteria in your mouth forms a sticky plaque biofilm that adheres to your teeth, especially around the gum line. If not removed regularly and thoroughly, the
By Larry Blustein sfsuntimes@aol.com The stigma that athletes have lived under for decades - is if you are great on the football field or in any other arena, you are not getting it done in the classroom. Not anymore! Three years ago, when Hallandale High standout football players Tyler Huntley, Demari Simpkins and Zack Moss went all the way out to the University of Utah, the odds of staying that far
away were not that great. If you even thought of adding in getting a degree, it would be that much more impressive. Forget getting that degree in three years – it would be totally out of the question. Last week, the trio, who have made a major impact on the football field, walked across the stage and received a diploma from the University of Utah – and in the process made many very
