ARE YOU REALLY READY THIS YEAR? There’s Nothing Certain About The Hurricane Season By Larry Blustein sfsuntimes@aol.com Ellen Reese knows the drill too well. She has lived it for 44 years. Raised in South Miami and living in Hollywood the past 21 years, there is little about hurricane season that she doesn’t know about - and living 11 blocks from the ocean, this is the time of year when panic begins to set in. Even with the start officially on Saturday (June 1), the season actually began this past week - with Andrea becoming the first named storm of 2019, which may or may not indicate how much we have to watch over the next six months. “I was a kid when Hurricane Andrew hit our area of the state,” she recalled. “Even though I was young, I still remember the destruction that we saw when my parents drove us around Homestead and other parts of that area.” Even as a child, Reese recalled the devastation and being without power for 12 days, and that memory has driven her ever since. “We saw people with Mercedes and Cadillacs standing in the same lines as we were for food, water and other supplies,” Reese remembered. “It was certainly, something at a young age, that you do not forget.” If you believe in predictions, which as we said for years, is tough enough, especially when they are coming from Colorado - you are foolish. Another Tragedy In The Community The Shooting of 17-Year-Old Josh Ancrum Leaves Many Questions By Larry Blustein sfsuntimes@aol.com It’s been over a week since the tragic shooting of one-time area high school football standout Joshua “Josh” Ancrum, and the hurt around south Florida and this tight community just won’t go away. While anger is the first emotion that comes to mind, you have to take a step back and understand that this will happen again - and again - tragically, again! Coming to grips with the loss of anyone is tough, but losing a child is so difficult for any of us to comprehend. While you can host as many community meetings or rallies against gun control and this senseless violence, you won’t even dent what 2019 is all about. This is a culture that is out of control - and truly without adult accountability. How many out there have a laundry list of questions in these tough days after yet another promising student/athlete loses his life and tears apart a community and a culture that has done its best to protect? I have a million. “As an older guy, I have seen everything on the streets,” Tim Jordan Jr. of Miami Gardens said. “I grew up in Miami - and for the past six decades have been in - and around some of the toughest neighborhoods in America - trying to do my part to ensure that these young men and women can wake up and feel positive about themselves. I know thousands of others who

have been positive role models.” We are a culture that has long attempted to get it right, and as fingers are pointed in every direction, perhaps looking at each tragedy individually will illustrate that everything starts at home - or the lack of a home. No matter where it is these days, many children start their lives in a hole. Several are products of terrible environments, where family units do not exist. It is a culture where guns and drugs are introduced at a very young age, and while law enforcement continues

Memorial Day had double meaning this year - as a day of celebration was held in Miami Gardens for Josh Ancrum. Grandfather Bernard Ancrum, event organizer Brett Goetz and Josh’s mom Lisa Alvarez joined the hundreds who came out.

Community Comes Out For Josh Ancrum By Larry Blustein sfsuntimes@aol.com Miami Gardens – On a Memorial Day Monday, when we are paying respects to those who have fought and continue to fight for our freedom – at home and abroad - there was another event that shared that spotlight.

Less than a week after Josh Ancrum lost his life to a senseless shooting, hundreds poured into Carol City Park in Northeast Miami-Dade to celebrate the life of a former student/athlete who has become a symbol to a
