Call it subtropical, tropical or anything else you would like, but at the end of the day, it can only signal that it’s time to be prepared.

With this past Memorial Day weekend serving as a reminder to start making those final preparations for the next six long months, we saw street flooding and heavy rains.

“Sort of something we needed to wake some of these people up down

here,” Alice Kornman of Hollywood said, waiting for her ride at Publix Supermarket. “The rain is coming down here in buckets – coupled by higher winds and the streets starting to get flooded is certainly something that got all of our attention.”

Fresh from the memory of the devastating 2017 season – where Florida was brushed, but other areas of the Caribbean were not so lucky, we begin another hurricane season that proves that nothing is ever an exact science when it comes to Mother Nature.

On Friday night, June 1, the Kiwanis Club of Hallandale Beach will host it’s 13th Annual Pasta Dinner Fundraiser benefitting Gulfstream Academy, Hallandale High School Key Club and the Hallandale Beach Police Athletic League.

and people, many are still without power. Those haunting images have stayed with so many of us – realizing that even if a storm happens to brush us – we will still pay the price in some way.

Look at Hurricane Irma. While not a direct hit, many are still digging out from that storm – and what about the families of those who lost lives in the Hollywood Assisted Living facility?

While listening to predictions, following statistics and watching every weather channel available will make you smart, it won’t always make you right – so being prepared is the only way to go.

Whether it’s 16 named storms or 8, all a hurricane season needs to go south is just one bad thing happening. A band that is from a tropical system hundreds of miles away that happens to have a tornado embedded in it can ruin your day quickly.

BEING READY FOR THE SEASON The worst thing that people who live along coast-

lines can do is not to prepare for tropical storms and hurricanes.

The two key factors contributing to weather safety during hurricanes are preparing in advance for the risks and to act on those preparations when alerted by emergency officials.

HAVE AN EVACUATION PLAN The main reason people have to evacuate during hurricanes is from a storm surge, which is an abnormal rise of water generated by a storm’s winds that can reach heights well over 20 feet and can span hundreds of miles of coastlines.

HAVING SUPPLIES The most important thing – and this needs to be started in February – is to have supplies.

Remember, stores may not have power or enough food and water – and your local pharmacy may not be up and running – so have at least a two-three week supply of all meds. Once you take a look at the basic items, consider what unique needs your family might have, such as supplies for pets, or seniors.

A basic emergency supply kit could include the fol-

lowing recommended items: Water - one gallon of water per person per day for at least three days, for drinking and sanitation.

Food - at least a three-day supply of non-perishable food.

Battery-powered or hand crank radio and a NOAA Weather Radio with tone alert.

Also, flashlights, first aid kit, extra batteries, whistle to signal for help, manual can opener for food, local maps and a cell phone with chargers and a backup battery.

“Having lived down here for a number of hurricane seasons, the only advice I can give is to never take anything for granted,” Hallandale Beach resident Michael Baxter pointed out. “There will be long lines everywhere when a storm approaches - so until December - when you go to the grocery store, purchase extra water and non perishables. You can always use them during the course of the year. That is what we do.”

This camp is designed to provide a fun supervised environment that helps improve the participant’s academic performance, provides social skills development, offers daily physical fitness opportunities, and teach the children how to work together while conducting community service learning projects. Activities include emphasis on reading, math and science; swimming, arts & crafts, weekly themes, sports, games, group activities, and field trips. This summer camp runs from June 7 through August 14 and is being held at several community centers in Hollywood.

There is space available at Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Washington Park and Community Centers.

Camp fees are based on a sliding fee scale with income verification.

For those who like the outdoors, kids can spend their summer at Hollywood’s popular Science, Education and Adventure (S.E.A.) Camp at the Hollywood Beach Culture & Community Center. S.E.A. Camp offers a classroom without walls with a focus on marine life and natural sciences. Campers will explore our beach areas, marshes, and other natural areas of interest, learning about fascinating creatures, natural habitats, ecosystems and environmental issues. S.E.A. Camp sessions are 3 weeks and begin June 11.

For parents wanting to encourage their children in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) the Department of Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts is offering week-long camps on topics ranging from video game design and computer graphics and animation to LEGO robotics and Chess. These camps are offered at various times and locations through the week of August 8.

Field trips, indoor and outdoor fun and games, arts & crafts, and special performances and events will go on all summer long at Driftwood and David Park Community Centers at camps operated by Sunshine Child Programs. Weekly sessions start

Children ages 8 to 17 can learn all about ocean and beach safety in the Beach Junior Lifeguard Program. Campers will learn lifesaving techniques; rescue board and ocean kayak skills, ecology, first aid and have a chance to compete in ocean lifeguard events. In addition to summer camps, the City of Hollywood is also offering swim lessons at Driftwood Community Pool for children ages 6 months and up all summer long. Think you're too old to quit smoking? Think again

(BPT) - It's no secret that tobacco smoke can be deadly. It is strongly linked to everything from cancer and stroke to pulmonary issues and heart disease.

Although the prevalence of smoking in the U.S. decreased from 21 percent to 17 percent of adults over the past five years, according to America's Health Rankings, the risk of dying from cigarette smoking has not decreased. In

fact, the risk has increased over the past 50 years, and, according to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), one in five deaths is estimated to be attributed to smoking.

One reason it's still so deadly is that tobacco addiction is tough to break. Much of the dramatic drop in smoking rates over the past quarter century is due not to people quitting but to fewer starting in the first

place.

Even as overall smoking rates have declined, the rate has hardly budged among those 65 and older.

Nearly 9 percent of adults aged 65 and were regular older smokers in 2017, meaning more than 4 million older adults could benefit from kicking the habit.

Several common misconceptions about smoking and older adults persist. Eliminat-

Big Lick Farm’s Lover’s Key is scheduled to seek a return to stakes-winning form in Thursday’s $75,000 Christmas Past at Gulfstream Park, The 4-year-old daughter of Frost Giant is slated to make her third start off a layoff in the mile turf event for fillies and mares that haven’t won a stakes in 2018.

Lover’s Key established herself as a stakes winner in 2017, capturing the $100,000 New York Stallion Stakes at Saratoga last August – a rewarding development for owner/trainer Reid Nagle, who claimed the New York-bred filly for $50,000 out of an eighth-place finish in a January 2017 maiden test at Gulfstream.

“I take a lot of risks, so I end up with a few wonderful horses and a lot of not-so wonderful horses,” Nagle said. “I liked her pedigree. I liked the fact that she was a New York-bred, and they were bringing her to Florida over the wintertime, so I thought, ‘She must be fit.’”

Nagle didn’t enjoy immediate success with Lover’s Key, who finished ninth in her first start off the claim in a $50,000 maiden claimer before being dropped into a $25,000 claiming race a month later.

Cool Off This Summer With Refreshing Salads • 1/4 c. extra-virgin olive oil

In a large bowl, stir together tomatoes, cucumber, olives, and red onion. Gently fold in feta.

In a small bowl, make dressing: Combine vinegar, lemon juice, and oregano and season with salt and pepper. Slowly add olive oil, whisking to combine.

Drizzle dressing over salad.

As you look at the calendar, nobody needs to remind you that summer is almost here.

The heat, humidity and rain showers tell us all we need to know.

Last week, we shared some dressing recipes with you, giving out some traditional as well as some not-so-traditional.

Today, it’s time to introduce some summer salads that are going to be a hit.

GREEK SALAD For The Salad • 1 pint grape or cherry tomatoes, halved • 1 cucumber, thinly sliced into half moons • 1 c. halved kalamata olives • 1/2 red onion, thinly sliced • 3/4 c. crumbled feta

For The Dressing • 2 tbsp. red wine vinegar • Juice of 1/2 a lemon • 1 tsp. dried oregano • kosher salt • Freshly ground black pepper

GERMAN POTATO SALAD • 2 lb. baby potatoes, halved • 6 slices bacon • 1 red onion, finely chopped • 1/4 c. apple cider vinegar • 2 tbsp. water • 1 tbsp. extra-virgin olive oil • 1 tbsp. dijon mustard • 1/2 tsp. granulated sugar • Kosher salt • Freshly ground black pepper • 8 green onions, sliced

In a large pot, cover potatoes with water and season generously with salt. Bring water to a boil and cook until potatoes are easily pierced with a knife, 15 to 20 minutes. Drain and let cool slightly before transferring to a large serving bowl.

In a large skillet over medium heat, cook bacon until crispy, about 8 minutes.

Reserve about 2 tablespoons of fat in pan, and transfer bacon to a paper towel-lined plate to drain.

Add red onion and cook over medium heat until starting to soften, about 3 minutes.

Whisk in in apple cider vinegar, water, olive oil, dijon mustard, and sugar. Bring mixture to a simmer, then turn off heat and season with salt and pepper.

Stir in green onions and gradually pour mixture over potatoes.

Toss to combine and serve warm.

SHRIMP SALAD For The Salad • 1 lb. shrimp, peeled and deveined

1 tbsp. olive oil Kosher salt Freshly ground black pepper 1/4 red onion, finely chopped 1 stalk celery, finely chopped 2 tbsp. minced dill Butterhead or romaine lettuce, for serving

For The Dressing • 1/2 c. mayonnaise • Juice and zest of 1 lemon • 1 tsp. dijon mustard

Preheat oven to 400°F and toss shrimp with olive oil on a large baking sheet. Season with salt and pepper and bake until shrimp are completely opaque, 5 to 7 minutes.

In a large bowl, whisk together mayonnaise, lemon juice and zest, and dijon mustard. Season with salt and pepper. Add cooked shrimp, red onion, celery, and dill to the bowl and toss to combine.

Serve on bread or over lettuce.

SPINACH SALAD • 5 oz. fresh spinach • 1 apple, such as Fuji, thinly sliced • 1/3 c. crumbled feta • 1/4 red onion, thinly sliced 1/4 c. sliced almonds, toasted

For The Dressing • 1/3 c. olive oil • 3 tbsp. red wine vinegar • 1 clove garlic, minced • 2 tsp. dijon mustard • Kosher salt • Freshly ground black pepper

In a medium bowl, whisk together all dressing ingredients until completely incorporated. Season with salt and pepper.

Combine all salad ingredients in a large bowl.

Add dressing, toss to combine, and serve immediately.

Chabad of South Broward are the South Florida leaders in Jewish education, outreach, and social services. Founded December 1980, in Chabad of South Broward is home to over forty five institutions and agencies, and is the Headquarters of nearly 20 Chabad Centers in Broward County.
