You remember – when we last left you, the state of Florida – with all the excitement of a child sitting

down to a plate of broccoli - proclaimed that medical marijuana was now legal.

Yeah, now let’s go back to being dull and trying to block everything and anything.

For some reason, the state of Florida, which should be voting on a money-making legalization of marijuana for

recreational purposes, seems to be dead set against anything that is progressive and anything that will make some money for a state that needs it.

Fourth of July Celebrations To Light Up The Skies

There is no getting around the fact that South Floridians just love their Fourth of July celebration - and whether it falls on a weekend - or in the middle of the week like we have this year - it’s all about family, food, beach and fireworks.

It plays out every year - where the Fourth of July becomes a day that we all have our own little fun - and as

neighborhood plan parties that culminate with local pyrotechnics - many head to the beach and make a full day out of it.

“To me, since I was a kid this is the one holiday that is all about family, food and fun,” Andi Cinicotti of Hollywood said. “Last year we had just welcomed our third child, so he was a bit young, but now at 15 months, we will be heading to the beach early, cooking out and then go back home to watch the fireworks.”

“I tried pot when I was 17 and never did it again – because it wasn’t me,” Eileen Dahl said. “I know my son has done it for years – on and off – and while you take your chances in anything that can alter your mind (alcohol included), when you are of age, nobody should be able to tell you what you can and cannot have. Especially when it exists in many states across the country.”

Best To Leave Fireworks To The Experts This Year

Every year we are all warned about the dangers of home fireworks. We have all watched and heard about those who continue to tempt fate. This year - instead of showing off and risk losing a hand or something worse, think for just a second first.

If you have lived in South Florida for any length of time, you already know that summer is synonymous with barbecues, parades and fireworks displays. But along with all the festivities are plenty of visits to emergency rooms – especially during July.

In 2017, at least four people died and about 13,000 were injured badly enough to require medical treatment after fireworks-related incidents, according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. And while the majority of these incidents were due to amateurs attempting to use professional-grade, homemade or other illegal fireworks or explosives, thousands were from less powerful devices like small firecrackers and sparklers.

The statistics are for real - and while many of us choose to ignore them until you become a statistic, you never pay attention.

On a typical Fourth of July, fireworks account for two out of five of all reported fires. Each year, fireworks cause on average 1,300 structure fires, 300 vehicle fires and nearly 17,000 other fires resulting in thousands of injuries.

Local South Florida agencies warn everyone to stay away from all consumer fireworks and to only enjoy fireworks at a public display conducted by professionals.

The one thing that many of us do not comprehend is just because they are legal doesn't mean they're safe.

Here is a list that everyone should know about:

Sparklers Every year, young children can be found along parade routes and at festivals with sparklers in hand, but they are a lot more dangerous than most people think. Parents don't realize they burn at about 2,000 degrees – hot enough to melt some metals.

Sparklers can quickly ignite clothing, and many children have received severe burns from dropping sparklers on their feet.

Bottle Rockets These small rockets are attached to a stick, lit by a fuse and typically fired from a bottle. Teens have been known to have bottle rocket wars, firing them at one another and causing chest,

head and eye injuries.

Roman Candles Roman candles eject multiple exploding shells from a tube the user holds in his or her hand. There have been numerous reports of children losing fingers, severe burns and other injuries, which are sometimes caused when the device gets jammed.

Firecrackers Firecrackers are designed to explode on the ground. They are often linked together by one long fuse and explode in a series. They are designed to be very noisy, but they also can cause burns and other serious injuries.

M-Class You hear them go off every year: M80s, M-100s, even M-250s. The unmistakable explosions associated with these devices can rattle the windows of homes for blocks. They are produced illegally and without quality control, have short fuses and cause hundreds of extremely severe injuries each year. They are very dangerous and everyone should stay away!

Important Home Fireworks If fireworks are legal to buy where you live and you choose to use them, be sure to follow the following safety tips: • Never use fireworks while impaired by drugs or alcohol.

• Never allow young children to handle fireworks.

• Older children should use them only under close adult supervision.

• Anyone using fireworks or standing nearby should wear protective eyewear.

• Never light them indoors.

• Only use them away from people, houses and flammable material.

• Only light one device at a time and maintain a safe distance after lighting.

• Never ignite devices in a container.

• Do not try to re-light or handle malfunctioning fireworks.

• Soak unused fireworks in water for a few hours before discarding.

• Keep a bucket of water nearby to fully extinguish fireworks that don't go off or in case of fire.

• Better yet, grab a blanket and a patch of lawn, kick back and let the experts handle the show.

Broward County Mosquito Control to Conduct Truck Spraying for Mosquito Larvae through Friday in the Hollywood area

Hollywood - Broward County Mosquito Control to Conduct Truck Spraying for Mosquito Larvae The recent heavy rains in Broward are prompting the need for the Mosquito Control Section to spray some areas of the County to reduce the mosquito larvae population. The mosquito being targeted is the Aedes Aegypti, a known disease-carring mosquito. Residents and business owners are urged to survey their properties to remove any standing water to prevent mosquito breeding, bites and diseases.

The Mosquito Control Section will perform preventive truck larviciding between the hours of 10:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m., weather permitting, through June 29th in some areas of Hollywood and Dania Beach, Davie, Hallandale Beach, Miramar, Pembroke Park, Pembroke Pines and West Park.

Specific spray schedule information and map of the targeted areas can be found on the informative Broward County Mosquito Control website at:

The active ingredient is Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis (Bti, strain AM6552), a naturally occurring, biodegradable bacterial mosquito larvicide which IS NOT harmful to humans, pets, bees, aquatic habitats or environmentally sensitive areas. It is certified by the Organic Materials Review Institute (OMRI) and is registered for use by the US Environmental Protection Agency.

In addition, VectoBac WDG has been reviewed by the World Health Organization and is listed as a recommended formulation for control of mosquito larvae. People living in the area who have registered with the State to be alerted prior to spraying will be notified.

Hollywood - All are welcome to celebrate our nation’s 242nd birthday on Hollywood Beach on Wednesday, July 4, 2018 at the annual Star-Spangled Spectacular 4th of July Celebration. Sponsored by the City of Hollywood Department of Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts and the Hollywood Community Redevelopment Agency-Beach District, this annual event features entertainment beginning at 5:00 p.m., highlighted by a dazzling offshore fireworks display at 9:00 p.m.

INFORMATION TO HELP MAKE IT A SAFE AND HAZARD-FREE HOLIDAY Alcoholic beverages, fireworks of all types, sparklers, glass containers, coolers larger than 36” long and barbecue grills are prohibited on the beach and could be confiscated by Hollywood Police. Small soft-sided coolers are preferred outside designated picnicking areas. Picnicking is permitted on the sandy beach only between Sherman and Custer streets as well as within Charnow Park at Garfield Street, Keating Park at Magnolia Terrace, and Harry Berry Park at Azalea Terrace.

It is prime nesting season for several protected species of sea turtles. Turtle nesting activity is normal and should not be considered an emergency.

If you plan to stake out a spot on the sand to watch the fireworks, please remember the nesting habits of sea turtles can be impacted by light sources, including flashlights. If you do encounter a sea turtle or sea turtle nest, do not disturb it. Knowingly interfering with a sea turtle nest could result in civil or even criminal penalties and fines.

All boaters are advised to travel at safe speeds and to watch for endangered species including manatees and sea turtles. Any collisions with or injury to sea turtles, manatees or other protected species must be reported to Sea Turtle Emergency Line (24 hours) at 954.328.0580 and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission at 1.888.404.FWCC. Spectator boats are not allowed to anchor on or above sea grass, hard bottom or coral reef structures and could face fines or crimi-

nal penalties for doing so. This is a condition of the event permit from the U.S. Coast Guard. Boaters also must remain at least 1,400 feet from the fireworks barge. The Hollywood Police Department Marine Unit will be on hand to assure boaters follow these regulations.

Public restrooms are located at Tyler, Fillmore, Johnson, Garfield, Taft and Missouri Streets on the Broadwalk for your convenience.

TRAFFIC INFORMATION Construction on A1A is impacting the flow of traffic. As such, a modified traffic plan will be in place on the 4th of July. Due to the anticipated heavy traffic and limited parking options, spectators are encouraged to utilize the free shuttle buses departing from two downtown parking garage locations to Johnson Street and N. Ocean Drive. The shuttle information is as follows: Radius Garage (HOURLY PARKING RATES APPLY) 250 N 19th Avenue Van Buren Garage (HOURLY PARKING RATES APPLY) 251 S 20th Avenue.

The free shuttles will run from 5:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. Please note the last shuttles will leave for the beach at 8:00 p.m., with returning shuttles running from 9:30 p.m. at the conclusion of the fireworks display until 11:00 p.m.

Parking at the Garfield Garage, 300 Connecticut Street on Hollywood Beach will be a flat special event rate of $30 for the day.

Intracoastal Waterway bridges will maintain their regular schedules throughout the day and early evening, but from 8 p.m. to midnight the following bridges will remain in the down position to allow vehicular traffic to enter and exit the beach: Dania Beach Boulevard, Sheridan Street and Hollywood Boulevard.

Mosquito Borne Virus Information Mosquitoes can carry dangerous diseases including a virus called the Zika virus. According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), Zika illness is generally mild with a rash, fever and joint pain, but the bigger concern among health officials is the possible link between the virus and harm to unborn babies if the expectant mother contracts the virus during pregnancy. The CDC recommends that pregnant women who have

traveled to countries with local-transmission of Zika undergo antibody testing for the virus. It is also recommended that women who are pregnant or thinking of becoming pregnant postpone travel to countries where Zika is being locally transmitted.

There’s nothing like grilling on the Fourth of July

Hot dogs, sausages and peppers, delicious turkey burgers and beans powder and 1/4 teaspoon salt. Roast at 450 degrees F in oven, 20 to 25 minutes or until crisp, shaking once.

Mix ground turkey breast with garlic, cilantro, remaining chili powder, and remaining salt. Form into 4 patties.

Grill on medium 12 to 15 minutes or until cooked through (165 degrees F), turning once.

Mash avocado with lime juice. Place burgers on whole-grain sandwich thins; top with avocado and tomato, cucumber, lettuce and sprouts as desired. Serve with fries.

This coming Wednesday is July Fourth. It is a time when food, fun and outdoor actives go together.

Part of that fun is enjoying some great foods - and today, we get you ready for the holiday with some mouthwater recipes right in time to celebrate Americas’ birthday.

TURKEY BURGER & SWEET POTATO FRIES • 2 small sweet potatoes (1 lb.)

• 2 tbsp. olive oil • 2 tsp. chili powder, divided • ½ tsp. salt • 1 lb. ground turkey breast • 2 cloves garlic, pressed • ½ c. Chopped cilantro • ½ avocado, plus more for serving • 2 tsp. lime juice • 4 toasted whole-grain sandwich thins • tomato, for serving • cucumber, for serving • Lettuce, for serving • sprouts, for serving

Cut sweet potatoes into 1/4-inch-wide sticks; toss, on large rimmed baking sheet, with olive oil, 1 teaspoon chili

GRILLED REUBEN DOGS • 1 tbsp. canola oil • ½ c. chopped onion • 1 c. sauerkraut or new kraut (which is less tangy) • 4 sun-dried tomato halves (not in oil) • ½ tsp. caraway seeds • ¼ tsp. Kosher salt • ¼ tsp. ground pepper • c. dry white wine • 4 top-split hot dog buns • c. Thousand Island dressing • 4 slice Swiss cheese • 4 all-beef hot dogs • 4 bread-and-butter “sandwich stacker” pickles

Heat oil in a skillet over medium heat; add onion and sauté 6 minutes or until lightly browned. Add sauerkraut, tomatoes, caraway, salt, and pepper; sauté 3 minutes.

Pour in wine and bring to boil; reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer 5 minutes or until wine is absorbed.

Heat oven to 350 degrees F. Heat a stovetop grill pan over medium heat. Toast insides of buns on grill pan, 2 minutes. Spread insides of buns with half of the dressing, then nestle 1 slice cheese in each bun over dressing.

Grill hot dogs all over, about 3 minutes. Place in buns and put on a baking sheet. Spread tops of hot dogs with remaining dressing, then spoon warmed sauerkraut mixture down the middle. Lay pickle halves along each side.

Place dogs in oven for 3 minutes or until cheese melts.

SAUSAGE-PEPPER KABOBS

• ¼ c. olive oil • 2 clove garlic • ½ tsp. dried oregano • salt and pepper • 2 large onions • 2 medium purple or green peppers • 3 medium red peppers • 2 lb. fully cooked kielbasa (smoked Polish sausage) • 12 Metal or bamboo skewers

If using bamboo skewers, soak skewers in cold water at least 30 minutes to prevent burning. Prepare outdoor grill for covered direct grilling on medium.

In small bowl, combine oil, garlic, oregano, 1/8 teaspoon salt, and 1/8 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper. Let stand while you cut onions, peppers, and sausages into 1-in. chunks.

Thread peppers, 2 at a time and alternating with onion and sausage, onto skewers. Brush skewers with oil mixture.

Place on hot grill grate; cover and cook 10 to 12 minutes or until browned, turning occasionally. Place on platter to serve.

CAMPFIRE BAKED BEANS • 6 slices bacon • 1 onion, chopped • 1 green pepper, chopped • ¼ tsp. Kosher salt • 3 (15-oz.) cans navy beans, drained • 1 ¼ c. GH Original Homemade Ketchup • ¼ c. molasses • 4 tsp. dry mustard • ½ tsp. Freshly ground black pepper

In a 12" oven-safe skillet, cook bacon on medium heat until fat is rendered. Transfer to plate; coarsely crumble.

To skillet, add onion, green pepper, and salt. Cook for 8 minutes.

Food Trucks Coming To Hallandale Beach, June 30-July 12

With many searching for things to do during the summer, the City of Hallandale Beach has come up with a bit of a game changer.

With a number of destinations already in place, bringing in thousands daily, there will now be another lure to attract locals as well as those looking for something unique and different.

With the popular Cafe Cita On The Beach taking a vacation for two weeks, those who are always looking for something delicious to eat, will be treated 14 days of food trucks on South City Beach Park.

The same trucks that have been getting plenty of publicity for being culinary hotspots on wheels will call 1870 South Ocean Drive in Hallandale Beach home from this Saturday, June 30th through Thursday, July 12th.

“We come down to the beach all the time and have eaten at a few places, so this is kind of a treat for us,” Hollywood Beach resident Mayam Stern pointed out. “We live less than a half mile from here, so we walk and enjoy. I am really looking forward to the trucks.”

(BPT) - Staying hydrated is a necessity, but sometimes it's difficult to tell when your body needs water, especially during warmer months.

Experts say on average men need 15 cups (3.6 liters) and women need 11 cups (2.6 liters) of water per day. Our bodies are about 60 percent water, and just losing 1.5 percent can be the tipping point for mild dehydration. Culligan International, a world leader in the treatment of water, is offering tips to keep you and your people well hydrated.

1. Bring water on the go. Going to work, the park, the pool or the library? Wherever you are headed, always bring a reusable water bottle. This goes for your people too. Have each member of your household choose their own water bottle and label it with their name. Allowing young children to pick a favorite water bottle provides added incentive to take frequent water breaks. Set the water bottles in a high-traffic area or close to the door so you don't forget them when leaving home.

And refill, refill, refill whenever empty.

2. Drink good water. Not all water is created equal. Filling your reusable bottle with filtered water can ensure it not only tastes better, but is also better for you. Home filtration or reverse osmosis (RO) systems work to reduce contaminants that may be in your tap water. According to the Mayo Clinic, if you exercise or engage in any activity that makes you sweat, you need to drink extra water to compensate for fluid loss. An extra 1.4 to 2.5 cups (.33 to .60 liters) of water should suffice for short bouts of exercise, but intense exercise lasting more than an hour requires more fluid intake. How much depends on how much you sweat and the duration and type of exercise. And don't rely on water fountains; be sure to bring your reusable water bottle to workout sessions.

5. Load up on fruits and veggies. Fruits and vegetables are high in water content and an excellent way to complement water intake and stay

hydrated. Watermelon, cantaloupe and strawberries are among fruits with the highest water content. For vegetables, it's cucumbers, iceberg lettuce, celery, tomatoes and zucchini. Before eating, be sure to rinse produce under filtered water to safely clean and maintain the health benefits.

(BPT) - Haiti has among the highest rates of elephantiasis (lymphotic filariasis), which attacks the lymphatm, leading to abnormal enlargement of body parts, disfigurement, pain, disability and social ostracism. The World Health Organization

estimates that 856.4 million people in 53 countries remain threatened by elephantiasis. The Haitian population also suffers from widespread iodine deficiency. The Haitian Ministry of Health has established a goal to completely eradicate elephantiasis and iodine deficiency disorders in Haiti by 2020. Fortunately, there is a simple cure for these conditions: salt fortified with iodine and diethylcarbamazine citrate (DEC).

Iodine is an essential element for healthy human life, enabling the function of thyroid glands to produce needed hormones for proper metabolism. When children in the womb don't get enough iodine from their mother, fetal brain development is impaired. During pregnancy, iodine deficiency can cause a child to develop learning and intellectual disabilities as well as developmental problems affecting speech, hearing and growth.

"Iodine deficiency disorder (IDD) is the single greatest cause of preventable mental retardation," says Kul Gautam, the for-

mer deputy executive director of UNICEF. "Severe deficiencies cause cretinism, stillbirth and miscarriage. But even mild deficiency can significantly affect the learning ability of populations. Scientific evidence shows alarming effects of IDD. Even a moderate deficiency, especially in pregnant women and infants, lowers their intelligence by 10-15 IQ points."

Kiwanis International, a worldwide service organization in more than 82 nations and geographic areas, partnered with UNICEF in a global effort to eliminate iodine deficiency disorders (IDD). In just 10 years, starting in 1990, the percentage of the world population consuming iodized salt went from 20 percent to 70 percent.

Kiwanis ultimately provided nearly $105 million to protect children from preventable mental and physical disabilities.

"There is no reward greater in life than helping children, and seeing them live healthy, vibrant lives. Our clubs and members understand the importance of helping children in their communities, and in com-

munities around the world, and have proudly contributed to protecting more than 80 million children from the devastating effects of iodine deficiency," said Stan D. Soderstrom, executive director of Kiwanis International, during a Kiwanis sponsored presentation at the 2018 World Salt Symposium in Park City, Utah.

Iodine deficiency was a problem in the United States as well, until American salt producers started adding iodine to table salt more than a century ago. Today, about 70 percent of the table salt sold in the United States is iodized. In fact, salt has been and remains the primary source for iodine in the American diet. The effect of this public health initiative has been to virtually eliminate the incidence of thyroid related illness, including goiters. "Iodized salt has been one of the greatest and most economical public health successes and it continues to help raise healthy, smart children," said Lori Roman, President of the Salt Institute, which hosted the 2018 World Salt Symposium.
