A sign of the times in Hollywood! Some residents want known racists Nathan Bedford FORREST, Robert E. LEE & John Bell HOOD off street signs By Larry Blustein sfsuntimes@aol.com Hollywood - Hillary Miller remembers it well. It was 2013, and as a senior at Jacksonville Nathan B. Forrest High School, she watched as thousands rushed to sign a petition to change the name of the school. When the school opened in 1959, an organization called the Daughters of the Confederacy pushed for the Forrest name despite a number of other non-controversial names that were under discussion. Nathan Bedford Forrest was a Confederate general who infamously slaughtered Black Union soldiers who’d already surrendered and who was a founding member of the original Ku Klux Klan.
Area communities getting ready for a big day/night on Tuesday
“When you go through school, you learn who many of these soldiers, who changed the course of history, really are,” Miller, an FIU student, recalled. “Everyone knew who Forrest was - and that was the tough part, having to see that name every day and understand that he was not a role model - at all.” The school name was changed three years ago to Westside High, but the memories of what Forrest and others who were DID NOT represent what most of us lived by. In fact, it has now spilled over to other cities around the south who have the name of Forrest as well as others on street signs and statues.
