For a nine month period - parents, students and teachers will watch their lives change - as school dominates the landscape, and becomes the conversation each and every day.

For parents Mike and Mindy Cross of Hollywood, they are ready to send their third child off to face a new world where mom and dad are not going to be around every second for advice and decision making.

New Exhibit opening at the ArtsPark at Young Circle Gallery

Hollywood - The ArtsPark at Young Circle Gallery is hosting an extraordinary art show entitled “Variations on the same Subjects: People, Nature and Geometry.”

This exhibition, presented by Contemporary Art Projects USA, showcases twentyone contemporary emerging and career artists, widely exhibited in the United States and abroad, unique and excellent in technique and artistic proposal. The focus of the exhibition is on unique works of art in which the artist presents his/her point of view in subjects like nature, human beings, abstract and/or geometric art.

The exhibition opens August 19th and will continue through September 13th. The public is invited to the opening reception which will take place at the ArtsPark at Young Circle Gallery, One Young Circle, US-1 and Hollywood Boulevard, on Saturday, August 19, 2017 during the monthly Downtown Hollywood Art Walk which runs from 5:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. Admission is free.

Hallandale Beach gets some free assistance from Bloomberg Philanthropies to run a smoother City

By Mayor Joy Cooper Hallandale Beach - This past Tuesday, we were fortunate enough to have had Bloomberg Philanthropies send a free facilitator to provide assistance on a grant that we will be applying for.

We were selected as one of 300 cities in the nation to receive this free workshop. The early bird catches the worm. As soon as I saw this great opportunity was available through the U.S. Conference of Mayors Partnership, I submitted our interest. The grant is a competitive grant among U.S. Cities who chose to apply.

Barbara Morgan came to the City for a day long workshop to help share extremely useful guidelines, tools and suggestions to help prepare the grant. The meeting was an all-day workshop with all department directors, assistant City Managers and the City Manager. Just for the record: All commissioners were invited.

Not only did we receive tools, but we were all taught how to generate ideas and engage the public and our partners to solve serious issues in our City. The workshop lessons will help all of our directors to look differently at how to tackle problems, internally and externally.

The completion is to best address a top issue for our City and create an implementable solution. The solutions will need to be started within a 3-year plan that can be transferable and more importantly, shared with other cities. The Bloomberg Philanthropies have done this Mayors Challenge before in the United States, South America and internationally.

This year, it was brought back to the U.S. Thirty five projects will be brought forward at a special Accelerator Conference, where all the finalists will have a chance to share ideas. In the end, there will be five winners; four at $1 million and the grand prize of $5 million.

At the meeting, we discussed the main issue in our community; traffic. While there are many

external causes and controls outside of our City that impact traffic, the goal will be focused on full mobility within our City and solutions that we can work towards. As we progress, staff will be developing the plan and gathering data from our records and other agencies that work with transportation. This is called number crunching, it will outline and create a true basis for the issues.

There will also be data collected by engaging with all of the stakeholders. These stakeholders include one-on-one interviews with residents, visitors and business owners. In addition, there will be focus groups established with various stakeholders to ask about their observations and ideas. The grant writing and submissions will be on a tight time line. Please stay tuned and if you have any observations, creative ideas or suggested improvements, please share them with me at any time.

EMERGENCY VOTE UPDATE I need to also write about a very crucial decision that was just made over the summer and ratified by the commission during the last meeting, regarding Diana Drive. I did not vote yes for this item. Those residents that left our meeting last year with the comfort of knowing their parking will not be impacted, need to know that the commission reverted to the original plan, this means any parking that is within the City’s right of way will be removed.

I pleaded with the commission not to take this action, and if they did, it would come back to haunt them. Since built years ago, many of the condo owners have presumed the parking is theirs and will remain theirs. In most cases, these spots have even been assigned to their units.

My suggestion was to deed the right of way back to the residents and not to remove the spots. One commissioner called our residents “squatters,” refusing to listen to reason. The ar-

gument was that there will be more on-street parking created with the original design. There is one huge problem with this argument - on street parking is not assigned nor guaranteed.

I am a big supporter of complete streets, but not to the detriment of our taxpaying residents.

Not only will they lose their spots, it will hurt property values and in turn hurt our tax base.

The plan approved, would have worked. Was it perfect? No. It proved sidewalks and did not harm anyone. Please contact your commissioners and tell them to rescind their vote, that is their job, to represent you, the taxpaying resident. They cannot just make a decision without seeing exactly who it effects - and why!

I am also concerned that the same may play out on Atlantic Shores Boulevard. We are planning to redo that entire roadway and condo parking. In any other community, the commissioners do extensive research and have to understand that decisions made have far-reaching affects.

Richard Levin, M.D., FACS: Minimally invasive treatment options in fighting Kidney Cancer When it comes to renal cancer and treatment options, Dr. Richard Levin has been at the forefront.

Richard Levin, M.D.,FACS, a board certified urologist, is among the first physicians in South Florida to treat renal cancers with ablation via cryotherapy.

The procedure, also known as kidney cryosurgery or cryoablation, destroys cancerous tissue by freezing the tumor cells while preserving normal tissue. Cryoablation is the latest advance in Nephron-Sparing surgery.

“It allows the treatment of suspicious tumors while sparing healthy kidney,” Dr. Levin explains.

Dr. Levin also points out that “Various treatments for kidney cancer often can result in loss of kidney function, such as bleeding and urine leaks; an average of 12,000 kidney cancer-related deaths occur each year.”

Nephron (kidney) Sparing surgery is grossly under-utilized, especially at non-academic settings and community hospitals. The entire procedure may be performed through a laparoscope, minimizing pain and time to recover.

matter how many jobs you have - or hours you work a week - it is essential to get involved in some way.

For Cartagena, it’s as simple as doing what you can to be a part of what’s going on.

“If you can attend the school open house, you will be introduced to your child's environment for the school year,” Cartagena explained. “Also, if you know things, share your expertise. If you have an interesting job or fun hobby - teachers and kids want to hear about it.”

Every school has a fundraising event: Bake sales, car washes and silent auctions are regular events at most schools. The funds raised support a variety of programs in the school.

“Do what you can to make that school better,” Cartagena says. “That is the one thing that I have been fortunate in doing. I have watched firsthand as parents who give of their time have really made a huge impact - and when they leave - there is a large void to fill.”

Kiwanis Knapsack and Supplies for Schools

The Kiwanis Club of North Miami Beach - Sunny Isles Beach recently hosted their annual knapsack & school supplies giveaway program to the delight of boys and girls and their respective families.

By David Udoff davidudoff@gmail.com North Miami Beach - It felt like Christmas in July at the local Walmart where the Kiwanis Club of North Miami Beach - Sunny Isles Beach recently hosted their annual knapsack and school supplies giveaway program to the delight of boys and girls and their respective families.

“The Kiwanis have been doing this for 20 years.

We purchased 125 knapsacks with donated supplies and are giving them to the children who need it the most. The Kiwanis partnered with the Lions Club and they provided a $50.00 gift card for families to buy school clothing,” said Lewis Thaler, president, Kiwanis.

The smile on a child’s face spread joy when each youngster received a brand new colorful knapsack filled with every school supply one could wish upon from pencils to notebooks.

School counselors decided which students met the financial eligibility for this program. These children typically come from low economic families who are trying to make ends meet in a metropolis where the gap between rich and poor has widened in these challenging times.

Milton Fisher is a financial advisor and he spearheaded the Kiwanis knapsack giveaway program. “I am a past president and have been active in the club for 26 years. I came up with the idea when my children were in school and they brought home a list of school supplies required by their teachers. I looked at the list and was amazed and thought of the cost and time to gather all the items,” said Fisher.

Walmart set up the spread where families gathered and enjoyed a light breakfast of cereal, bagels,

and fruit. With extended generosity, Miami-Dade County Commissioner Sally A. Heyman brought donuts for everyone. North Miami Beach Mayor George Vallejo was also present.

The Kiwanis motto is "Serving the Children of the World.” Since 1957, this local chapter has a venerated history of community service and all services are at no cost to the recipients. The local Kiwanis sponsors eleven area South Florida public schools for students to join including: Circle-K for college students; Key Club for high school; Builders Club 6th through 8th grade; K-Kids 3rd to 5th grade. The purpose of the various school clubs is to interest young people to get involved with community awareness to improve the quality of life for all.

The Kiwanis Club of North Miami Beach - Sunny Isles Beach hold their monthly luncheon meeting the first Wednesday of the month at 11:30 A.M. and dinner meetings the third Wednesday of the month at 6:30 P.M. at Duffy’s Sports Grill, North Miami Beach.

It’s all about delicious & versatile potato salad

Mixed with corned beef and cabbage, it is truly a taste treat that is different toes, celery, and onion to mixture and stir gently until evenly coated. Refrigerate for 2 hours, or until ready to serve.

Notes: Fresh herbs will bring out the summer flavor of this potato salad. Try adding some chopped parsley, snipped basil, or whatever herbs you like best.

CORNED BEEF RED POTATO SALAD • 1 pound cooked corned beef, diced • 1 – 1 ½ pound of red potatoes, diced • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter • White cabbage, sliced • 1 tablespoon chopped fresh flat-leaf parsley

While it’s the summer, and we are always looking for creative ways to eat, potato salad is always an idea that will please everyone.

Who really does not like a potato? When made into a potato salad and mixed with other ingredients, they become meal. Check these dishes out:

SUMMER POTATO SALAD • 4 pounds Russet Idaho® potatoes, • peeled and cut into 1-inch chunks • 1 cup mayonnaise • 3 tablespoons apple cider vinegar • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder • 1 1/2 teaspoons salt • 3/4 teaspoon black pepper • 1 cup diced celery • 1/2 cup diced red onion

Place potatoes in a large pot and add enough water to cover them. Bring to a boil over high heat and cook 15 to 20 minutes, or until fork tender.

Drain and cool.

In a large bowl, combine mayonnaise, vinegar, garlic powder, salt and pepper, mix well. Add pota-

Shanagarry Dressing Ingredients: • 2 eggs, soft boiled • 1 tablespoon dark soft brown sugar • pinch of salt • 1 level teaspoon dry mustard • 1 tablespoon brown malt vinegar • 1/4 cup cream, more if needed • to thin the dressing • Black pepper to season

Soft boil the eggs for the salad dressing, and then plunge into cold water to stop them from cooking.

Once cool, shell the egg, and separate the yolk from the white by cutting into the egg white and spooning out the yolk. Mash the yolk until smooth and do the same for the egg whites.

In a mixing bowl, add the brown sugar, a pinch of salt and the mustard and whisk until smooth.

Blend in the vinegar and cream slowing and then add the egg whites, then the yolk. Whisk together until creamy.

Allow the dressing to rest while you make the salad.

Boil the potatoes until fork tender, drain and set

aside in a large mixing bowl while you pan fry the cabbage in butter. Just before they are done, toss in the parsley and allow them to warm through. Add to the potatoes, and pan fry the corned beef until they start to brown. Add to the bowl and fold together with the cabbage and red potatoes.

Finish by dressing the salad. Delicious served while it is still warm, excellent served chilled after a few hours in the fridge.

GAUCAMOLE POTATO SALAD • 2 pounds Idaho® Mixed Medley • Fingerling potatoes • 2 ripe avocados, peeled, pitted and diced • 1/4 cup sour cream • 2 tablespoons fresh lime juice • 2 teaspoons minced garlic • 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin • 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt • 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper • 2 Roma tomatoes, chopped • 1 medium jalapeño, minced • 1/2 cup chopped red onion • 1/2 cup chopped fresh cilantro

Place potatoes in large saucepan and cover with cold water; heat to boiling over medium-high heat.

Cook 12 to 15 minutes or until potatoes are just tender. Drain; rinse with cold water until cool.

Transfer potatoes to cutting board; cut into 1-inch pieces.

Meanwhile, in large bowl, place avocados, sour cream, lime juice, garlic, cumin, salt and pepper.

Use fork to mash together until smooth.

Add tomatoes, jalapeño, onion and potatoes to bowl with avocado mixture; gently toss to combine.

Refrigerate at least 1 hour, or up to 2 hours before serving. Just before serving, gently fold in cilantro.

Care-taking for Alzheimer’s patients is never easy ness they are experiencing can be unbearable.. Feelings of guilt often exist about whether or not to put their loved one in a facility that could better take care of their needs. Strong intense guilt feelings may also occur when the care-takers succumb to feelings of helplessness, and at times, wish their loved-one would finally die to end the suffering for everybody. … This is a tough place to be.

The decision about finding a nursing home for your mom involves many factors. They include the current condition of your mom, your financial resources, your personal resources, including your own support system, and the resources available for your

Q… Dr. Ron, I have been care-taking for my mom, who has been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Disease.

Life has not been the same since. I feel guilty to put her in a home. Are other people in my situation as stressed as me?

A… The feelings that you have expressed are very common ones, and they are very understandable to anyone that has been a care-taker for a loved one with Alzheimer’s. I hope after you read my response you feel a little less alone, and troubled.

Alzheimer’s Disease is the most common form of irreversible dementia. It is normally not diagnosed until later in life. By age 65 approximately 5% of the adult population will be diagnosed with this disease, by age 75 approximately 20-40%, and almost half of all Americans will be diagnosed with Alzheimer’s if they live to age 85. Although under much speculation, at this point there is no known cause for the onset of Alzheimer’s, and no known cure. While certain drugs have been developed that temporarily offer some relief of symptoms for some people, their effectiveness can diminish rapidly. Symptoms include severe memory and cognitive decline (to the point of not even recognizing one’s family members), physical dysfunction, and disruptive change in mood and personality. Death will normally occur within 8 years from the time of diagnosis. The effects of this sinister disease not only causes suffering to the diagnosed individual, but wreaks havoc upon the entire family. The effect on the main care-taker can be overwhelming… ….

Dr. Adler Using Laser In Battle Against Toe Fungus

According to the American Podiatric Medical Association, approximately 40% of patients visiting a podiatrist have complaints or signs of toe fungus. It may begin with tenderness or pain in the toe, developing into an unsightly thick, darkened nail, and it can spread from toe to toe. In fact, the fungus can get so out of control that it can infect the foot and ankle.

Topical treatment such as Lamisil cream usually is the first course of therapy for a mild or moderate case. However, long-term use or oral antifungal medication is not recommended due to the toxic side effects Lamisil can have on the liver. This is a special risk if a patient is taking other medications, including excessive use of Tylenol that can manifest the same hepatic damage.

Over the past few years, Dr. Charlton Adler has been following closely the application and reported results of laser therapy on fungus toenails and other podiatric and wound situations. He is pleased to announce that he now is able to add this service as a therapeutic option in his office in North Miami Beach.

“The introduction of laser in treating toe fungus has had a major impact on attacking this uncomfortable and unsightly problem,” says Dr. Adler. He further explains that Onychomycosis, the medical term for fungal infection of the nail, is often ignored because it can be present for years without causing pain. “When the fungus imbeds itself under the nail,” he adds, “ the nail surface can become darker in color and the area can develop an odor.

The fungus lives on debris under the nail, and white marks can appear on the nail plate.”

Approved for the treatment of nail fungus five years ago by the Food and Drug Administration, the special appeal of lasers is that it selectively heats and destroys harmful fungi while sparing healthy surrounding skin. Because of the intensity of the heat generated by laser rays, Enrique Mechulon a specially trained and certified laser technician working with Dr. Adler, says that both he and the patient wear laser protective glasses and take several rest periods during the 40-minute process.

“I have already witnessed many success stories where patients have spent years and thousands of dollars to get rid of their nail fungus,” says Mechulon. “Depending on the patient’s general health and nail problem, it can take anywhere from one to nine treatments, but the results are there with minimum risk to the body,” he adds.

“I have wanted to offer this therapy for quite a while,” says Dr. Adler. “However, I am cautious in my approach, and I needed more proof on studies and reports.” Dr Adler adds that research shows that 80% of all toe fungus has been healed using laser therapy. “This is in contrast to topical ointments that only work 50% of the time,” says Adler, “and with topical treatment, the infection usually returns.”

Lessons Learned In Hiring A Private Aide By the daughter of an Aventura mom

Finally, I found the perfect person to look after mom, who could no longer live alone safely. Marie, the aide, was referred by another aide in mom’s building, who seemed to take great care of a very demanding neighbor who was showing signs of confusion like my mother. During the interview process, Marie demonstrated patience, attentiveness to mom’s needs, and had glowing references. I even called two of them, who were out of state, but who affirmed how good Marie was to them or their family member. What a relief! After three weeks in Florida, I finally was able to return to my family in Ohio and feel that mom was in good hands.

At first, all was fabulous. Mom said Marie helped her with showering, picking out her clothes, made small meals, and they went to dinner a lot. Mom also said Marie helped her clean out her drawers and closets, and helped her organize her things.

Then, mom began to complain that Marie moves things around, and mom cannot find them. She told Marie to keep things in one place, and that Marie raising her voice to her. I spoke to Marie, who said mom moves things around herself, and then cannot find them. I suggested that since mom can get confused, it might be best to organize things the way it would be easier for her. The next day, mom called and said her diamond ring and earrings were missing, and the $400 spare money that she has kept in the corner of her bedside table for years was also missing. I asked to speak to Marie. Mom informed me that Marie went down to the store and had not yet returned.

When I called back later, mom said Marie still had not returned and she did not know what she should do for dinner. I called Security in mom’s building. They had not seen the aide since she left in the morning. I asked them to check on mom. Feeling upset myself, I called another neighbor, asking if she could either include my mother in her dinner plans or help mom order delivery from a local restaurant, and then see to it that she had something for breakfast in the morning.

I called the Aventura police to report a possible theft, and booked an early morning flight back to Florida.

What an ordeal followed. However, at least mom was not physically harmed!

Although I had resisted going through an agency due to a slightly higher cost, I began a rapid search of getting competent help as soon as possible, calling mom’s doctors and going online. The name Always Classic Care came up several times. When I called, the staff was most professional asking about mom’s status and needs. The owner, Terry Adler, joined the conversation with more specific questions about mom’s personality and capability status, as well as my concerns and services I felt mom would need. Terry advised me that she and her staff would confer immediately to select the most suitable aide, and that she would personally supervise the case. To my surprise, once paperwork was completed with staff, Terry called me back to report she had someone very special for mom who could start later that evening or first thing in the morning. I was amazed. Well, mom hit it off with the new aide immediately, and she has now been with mom for the over a year. It definitely was a great match.

Although I had avoided going through an agency because of the slightly higher cost, it took a bad experience for me to realize the many advantages of using a home health agency or nurse registry.

Aside from dealing with professionals, home health agencies are regulated by the State of Florida. All of their healthcare workers must submit to a rigorous screening process that includes FBI fingerprinting for any history of wrong doing. A registered agency such as Always Classic Care requires a personal interview conducted by a professional staff who also scrutinize documentation of training, references and work history, and applicants are required to complete preemployment testing as to knowledge of various levels of care. Also, if there is any problem , question, personality or communication issue once the aide is assigned, the agency will get involved and make immediate changes. And, as in the case of the missing Marie, Terry told me they would have become integrally involved in the investigation. I found that the agency may cost a few dollars more per hour than a private hiring, but now, the cost seems minimal when compared to the open communication and peace of mind that it can bring.

Keeping up with the Aventura activities in August City of Aventura Announces the 2017-18 Youth Sports Season: Registration for the City of Aventura’s Youth Sports 2017-18 Season is now open for residents and starts on Monday, August 14, 2017 for nonresidents. Children are offered the opportunity to participate in a variety of recreational seasonal sports leagues including basketball, girls’ soccer and boys’ soccer for ages 5-15. Travel soccer is available for boys ages 8-9 and co-ed travel basketball is available for ages 8-13, which allow players to compete in games and tournaments throughout the state of Florida. After-school sports leagues are also available and are scheduled with a convenient time slot allowing players to enjoy sports activity right after their regular school day ends. After-school soccer is available to children in grades K-5, and after-school basketball is available to children in grades K-8.

The complete Youth Sports 2017-18 season schedule, fees and information is available exclusively online at cityofaventura.com/ors, the City’s Online Registration System (ORS).

Returning participants can complete registration online using the ORS. New participants as well as returning participants may register in person at the following locations:

Non-residents will be required to pay the park entrance fee ($5 per adult and $3 per child under the age of 18, as long as they are accompanied by an adult) upon arrival to Founders Park. All first time visitors will be required to fill out a waiver of liability upon entering the park for class.

Founders Park is located at 3105 NE 190 Street.
