As many returned or started school this week and next week - students come into the new year with plenty of optimism.

After a long, hot summer, it’s all about having a plan and sticking with it.

For first year South Broward High freshman Alison Parker-Jones, the anticipation of a new school year and a new school has had her thinking about setting goals this summer. She even started preparing for the first year in high school by reading two books this summer.

“I feel that if I come to my new school and have a plan, I will be much better off,” she explained.

“From having an older brother, I already know

that things will be different at first, but as time moves along, you start to feel right at home.”

Because her mother is a teacher, Parker-Jones is perhaps more qualified than most students, but that doesn’t mean she has to work any less than everyone else.

For any student, the new school year always brings with it plenty of new challenges. Even if you really don’t really like

“You don’t know a lot of people, and all the new classes seem really hard at first,” said 5th grade teacher Kathy Hope of Hollywood. “It gets better, and I have personally watched students who never liked school, seem to get into the flow when new friends are met - along with teachers who challenge them in the classroom.”

It is important to recognize that an education is a privilege and learning new things can be fun. Taking your studies seriously WILL prepare you for a bright future.

Hope recommends setting goals for yourself before the school year begins. Commit to these goals because how this school year goes academically is really up to how much time and effort the student puts in. Believe in yourself. You can do this!

“Go to class every day and take it seriously,” Hope explained. “People who skip a lot of classes, end up skipping life. When you miss a day, or even a class, it’s easy to fall behind. Nobody likes to feel like they’re behind, or in the dark. It can be hard to catch up and then pretty soon you might just give up.”

“I can recall when I was a student, my mother told me to make friends,” Hope said. “I remember I met my best friend by sitting with her because she was alone. Reaching out to them, find out who they are, and what they like to do is essential in embracing new friends.”

In a world that is never easy, it’s up to you to decide what kind of school year you’re going to have. Make the most of it while you can.

Mobility Improvements Project Set to Begin on Hollywood Boulevard Hollywood - Construction will begin next week on a $2.3 million mobility improvement project along Hollywood Boulevard and Pines Boulevard from east of US 27 to just west of I-95 and on Flamingo Road from Pembroke Road to NW 4th Street. The project begins on August 25, 2018 with an anticipated completion of Summer of 2019.

The Broward Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) is investing over $300 million to create safer, healthier communities in

Broward. This project is one of many within a larger plan to create enhanced bicycle, pedestrian, and transportation access public throughout the Broward region.

Mobility improvements planned for the City of Hollywood include:

• Widening, resurfacing, and restriping roadway to add bike lanes in both directions • Upgrading pedestrian ramps and crosswalks • Extending the length of turn lanes

Making Some Key Decisions Today To Sustain The Future of Hallandale Beach

Over the past few days, I have been delighted to see the smiles of children and parents participating at the three back to community school events. This was made possible with assistance from our community partners: Hallandale High (Go Chargers!), the Children’s Services Council, Signarama, Liberty Tax, Tony’s Barbershop, the Broward Regional Health Planning Council, among many others. These partnerships came together to promote the back to school season with backpacks, clothes, sneakers, school supplies and communitybased program

information. Kudos to the City of Hallandale Beach Staff as well for organizing the community unity event on Friday August 10, 2018 which was unfortunately moved indoors due to inclement weather.

I am excited to see the NHL Florida Panthers visit our local library to promote reading literacy skills for local youngsters.

This was the first-annual summer reading tour program pairing Panther guests, alumni and media personalities with libraries to offer reading programs within Broward libraries. It was exciting to see Florida Panther Radio Announcer Doug Plagen read to Hallandale Beach children.

In anticipation of the new school year, I wish all students a great year and encourage all of them to continue learning and seeking for opportunities growth. By David Myles Udoff davidudoff@gmail.com Miami - Many happy student faces could be seen at the annual Kiwanis Club of Northeast Miami-Dade school knapsack giveaway program that recently took place at the local Walmart. Prior to the charity event, Kiwanis members held their monthly dinner meeting at Duffy’s where the group filled a quantity of colorful knapsacks with heaps of school supplies from pens to notebooks.

School counselors decided which students met the financial eligibility for the program designed for youngsters who come from low economic families. At the event everyone gathered and enjoyed a light breakfast of cereal, bagels, fruit and coffee.

Not one to sit on the sidelines, Lewis Thaler made the transition from being a city vice mayor to engage in social, political and philanthropic work. “This year the Kiwanis knapsack giveaway program is expanding to Sunny Isles Beach. Another program we have started is to create a library with book replenishment at the Foxy Lady Laundry to encourage a reading program,” said Thaler president, Kiwanis.

Spearheaded by Milton Fisher, the Kiwanis knapsack giveaway program does help these families in need. Fisher came up with the idea when he saw how much money he shelled out for school supplies required by teachers back when his kids were in

“We partner with the Lions Club to make this event possible. Kiwanis members distributed the knapsacks filled with school supplies and the Lions Club gave a $50.00 gift card for clothing. Walmart donated the space and employee time,” said, Ken Kruger, secretary, Kiwanis.

Elizabeth Feldman, high school lieutenant governor, Key Club, responsibility is to oversee eight Key Clubs in schools in the Northeast Miami-Dade area.

“I spend every week with the Kiwanis and attend their

meetings and projects. The schools offer fun meetings and any student is welcome to join us,” said Feldman.

The Kiwanis mission is serving the children of the world. Since 1957, this local chapter has a positive history of community and charity work. The Kiwanis Club sponsors eleven area South Florida public schools for students to join including: Circle-K for college students; Key Club for high school; Builders Club 6th through 8th grade; K-Kids 3rd to 5th grade.

The purpose of the various school clubs is to interest young people to get involved with community awareness to improve the quality of life for all Save the Date. The Kiwanis Club of Northeast Miami-Dade will be celebrating their 61st Anniversary Gala-Silent Auction on October 17, 2018, at 6:30 P.M. Saving Santa's Sleigh With Plenty of Help

By Marguerite Goulet, President Rotary Club of Hallandale Beach - Aventura The Rotary Club of Hallandale Beach-Aventura owns the Santa's Sleigh trailer float that it has used every Christmas Eve for the past 50+ years to spread good will and holiday cheer to the citizens of Hallandale Beach. Each year dedicated Rotarians dust off

the Santa's Sleigh, make necessary repairs, get together to prepare treats for Santa to give out to eager children and send the sleigh around town with Santa and his helpers and goodies in tow! Some parents arrange with Santa in advance for the special delivery of gifts too! The City of Hallandale Beach also uses the float for a separate holiday event in the city.

Because the City of Hallandale Beach sold the property that provided storage for our 40’ container that houses our Santa's Sleigh trailer, we were seeking a new storage place for several months with no luck. Now we had reached the nth hour with threats of towing and impound.

This year we have developed a partnership between our Rotary Club and the staff at The Gulfstream Early Childhood Center. I asked Fran Markowitz, our club Secretary to quickly craft a letter in this nth hour appealing to Dr. Lori Canning to assist us with a place to put our Santa's Sleigh. As luck would have it, a place was found! Thanks to Dr. Canning and Christine Moss.

Now to coordinate moving the container with the

sleigh! Hector Miranda, our member that is the custodian of the sleigh, was out of the country. He had arranged for Blueline Containers to move the container, but he did not know they could not move it with the sleigh inside! So now we had to find someone that had a vehicle and the skills to move the sleigh! All the while the City is tapping their fingers on the desk because the deadline is approaching.

The only person we could find with a vehicle and the skills was not available during the hours necessary to make the move. Our Secretary Fran Markowitz gave me Cathie Schanz’s phone number. Cathie Schanz is the Director of The City of Hallandale Beach Parks and Recreation. Now here is a our hero! Cathie agreed to enlist Joe Tullis to move the sleigh!!! Joe is the city employee that is the custodian of the Santa's Sleigh for the City’s holiday event, so I knew the Santa's Sleigh was in good hands! That's how Santa's Sleigh was saved this July!!

The results of the American Heart Association 2018 Workplace Health Achievement Index were announced today and Broward County achieved Gold Level recognition for taking significant steps to build a culture of good health in the workplace.

The American Heart Association created the Index with its CEO Roundtable members, a leadership collaborative of more than 40 CEOs from some of America’s largest companies who are committed to applying evidence-based ap-

proaches to improve their employees’ overall health. The Index uses best science-based practices to evaluate the overall quality and comprehensiveness of their workplace health programs. There’s plenty to do with delicious leftover ham From chowder to baked ziti and quiche - the recipes are indeed endless add the cheeses, garlic powder and pepper. Cook and stir until cheese is melted.

Drain ziti; add to sauce mixture. Stir in ham and spinach. Transfer to a greased 13x9-in. baking dish.

Bake, uncovered, at 375° for 20-25 minutes or until heated through. Yield: 6 servings.

You just bought a ham - and while you also made some delicious side dishes - there is plenty left over.

What do you do?

While freezing is also a great idea, there are some tremendous leftover recipes that your friends and family will say YES to. Check some of these tremendous dishes out.

HAM & CHEESE ZITI • 1 package (16 ounces) ziti • 1/4 cup butter, cubed • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour • 2 cups 2% milk • 2 cups (8 ounces) shredded white • cheddar cheese • 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese • 1 teaspoon garlic powder • 1/2 teaspoon pepper • 3 cups cubed fully cooked ham • 1 package (10 ounces) frozen • chopped spinach, thawed and squeezed dry

Prepare ziti according to package directions.

Meanwhile, in a Dutch oven, melt butter. Stir in flour until smooth; gradually add milk. Bring to a boil; cook and stir for 2 minutes or until thickened. Reduce heat;

CHEESY HAM CHOWDER • 10 bacon strips, diced • 1 large onion, chopped • 1 cup diced carrots • 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour • 3 cups milk • 1-1/2 cups water • 2-1/2 cups cubed potatoes • 1 can (15-1/4 ounces) whole • kernel corn, drained • 2 teaspoons chicken bouillon granules • Pepper to taste • 3 cups (12 ounces) shredded cheddar cheese • 2 cups cubed fully cooked ham

In a Dutch oven, cook the bacon over medium heat until crisp. Using a slotted spoon, remove to paper towels to drain. In the drippings, saute onion and carrots until tender. Stir in flour until blended. Gradually add milk and water. Bring to a boil; cook and stir for 2 minutes or until thickened.

Add the potatoes, corn, bouillon and pepper. Reduce heat; simmer, uncovered, for 20 minutes or until potatoes are tender. Add cheese and ham; heat until cheese is melted. Stir in bacon. Yield: 10 servings.

HAM & CHEESE QUICHE • 1 package (14.1 ounces) refrigerated pie pastry • 2 cups diced fully cooked ham • 2 cups (8 ounces) shredded sharp • cheddar cheese • 2 teaspoons dried minced onion • 4 large eggs

• 2 cups half-and-half cream • 1/2 teaspoon salt • 1/4 teaspoon pepper

Preheat oven to 400°. Unroll pastry sheets into two 9-in. pie plates; flute edges. Line unpricked pastry shells with a double thickness of heavy-duty foil. Fill with pie weights, dried beans or uncooked rice. Bake 10-12 minutes or until light golden brown. Remove foil and weights; bake 3-5 minutes longer or until bottom is golden brown. Cool on wire racks.

Divide ham, cheese and onion between shells. In a large bowl, whisk eggs, cream, salt and pepper until blended. Pour into shells. Cover edges loosely with foil.

Bake 35-40 minutes or until a knife inserted near the center comes out clean. Let stand 5-10 minutes before cutting.

Freeze option: Cover and freeze unbaked quiche. To use, remove from freezer 30 minutes before baking (do not thaw). Preheat oven to 350°. Place quiche on a baking sheet; cover edge loosely with foil. Bake as directed, increasing time as necessary for a knife inserted near the center to come out clean. Yield: 2 quiches (6 servings each).

NAVY BEAN VEGETABLE SOUP • 4 medium carrots, thinly sliced • 2 celery ribs, chopped • 1 medium onion, chopped • 2 cups cubed fully cooked ham • 1-1/2 cups dried navy beans • 1 envelope vegetable recipe mix • 1 envelope onion soup mix • 1 bay leaf • 1/2 teaspoon pepper • 8 cups water

In a 5-qt. slow cooker, combine the first nine ingredients. Stir in water. Cover and cook on low for 9-10 hours or until beans are tender. Discard bay leaf. Yield: 12 servings (3 quarts).

Annual Water Line Flushing Program Hollywood - The City of Hollywood Department of Public Utilities is conducting its annual water line flushing program. The flushing of water distribution lines will continue across the City through August 17. The Annual Flushing Program is required by the Florida Department of Health - Broward County to help rid the water distribution pipelines of any accumulated sediments. The hydrant flushing may tem-

porarily cause cloudy or discolored water, which should settle and clear a few hours after flushing.

The cloudiness is due to the sediments in the pipeline and is not harmful or hazardous.

Flushing will take place in one section of the City at a time, Sunday through Friday, during the day and evening hours. During the water line flushing period, the Water Treatment Plant will temporarily change its

method of disinfection from chloramines to free chlorination. It will be necessary

This Week’s ArtsPark Movie Night features ‘Captain Underpants’

Hollywood - Another exciting week is on tap for the City of Hollywood.

Starting Friday night, things will come alive with the ArtsPark Movie Night featuring “Captain Underpants” (PG).

The ArtsPark Friday Night Movie is featuring the animated movie “Captain Underpants.” George and Harold are two overly imaginative pranksters who spend hours in a treehouse creating comic books. When their mean principal threatens to separate them into different classes, the boys hypnotize him into thinking he is a superhero named Captain Underpants.
