Social Media Helps The World Run Daily

By Larry Blustein sfsuntimes@aol.com At the age of 64, April Klein is the last person you would expect would be a “poster person” for social media.

Over the past five years, when the Hallandale Beach resident was at home, battling cancer, her loneliness and being in a situation where she had very little control, she needed to reach out and talk to people.

As she watched her 7-year-old grandson play on the computer and communicate with friends via Facebook and Twitter, Klein stumbled upon something she had very little knowledge of before - the internet!

With the help of her grandson and

daughter, she began to surf the ‘information superhighway’ -finding things that actually helped in her battle with cancer.

“I never knew anything about computers, since I was in nursing and very rarely worked on them back in the days,” Klein explained. “The first thing I did when I was learning to search things was look for everything that was related to the disease and what kind of diet and exercise program would help combat it.”

Using her developing knowledge of the computer and how to go online, Klein started to join social media outlets such as Facebook, Twitter, Snap Chat

I am more optimistic than ever about our beautiful city. We are

currently one of the most progressive cities across South Florida. I commend Commissioner Dally for bringing forward and spear heading the straw ban ordinance proposal, and applaud Vice Mayor Lazarow with her pet friendly efforts and bringing awareness of Pet safety to our community. We are working hard to position ourselves to handle the increased growth our City has experienced in the past years. With proposals to enhance our

infrastructure, proper alignment for a wellmanaged city government and support from new businesses coming into the area, our future is bright and vibrant.

As Mayor, one of my focal points is holding up the appeal and cleanliness of the City.

Why Public Transit Is A Key Economic Issue For Growing Cities (BPT) - We'd love to take our daily commute for granted. Except, we can't. It is essential that we continue to make public transportation as efficient as possible for commuters.

Over the decades, as a nation we have put investing in our transportation infrastructure, particularly our bus and rail systems, on the back burner. The result: Today's public transit backlog sits at $90 billion, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation. This is a missed opportunity to make our public transportation systems more efficient and our cities more productive, and it has serious economic implications.

For instance, a lack of investment in our public transportation infrastructure costs the U.S. economy $340 billion in revenue over a six-year period, according to the study, "The Economic Cost of Failing to Modernize Public Transportation."

"Our failure as a nation to address America's public transit modernization needs has wide-ranging negative effects," says APTA president and CEO Paul P. Skoutelas, "because lost time in travel makes a region's economy less productive."

Scott’s legacy will be mixed. Ask any Republican and they will tell you straight out that for six years of his term, all he did was anger people and alienate those who voted for him. It’s only since President Trump has been in office has Scott become anything close to positive.

“The race for governor is very important,” Jackie Frazier of Hallandale Beach pointed out. “I am a voting Democrat, but will certainly cast my ballot for the person or issues that will do the best job for all of us. I am one of those who didn’t think Rick Scott was good at all. I am not the only person who feels that way.”

We have over 1,000 people who follow us on Instagram and Facebook. Some may not be potential customers, but if we get a few jobs, and promote the ones we have done, things change.”

NEGATIVE CAMPAIGNING - MORE THAN A TURNOFF From Palm Beach billionaire Jeff Greene to Bob Graham’s daughter, Gwen, Andrew Gillum and former Miami Beach Mayor Philip Levine, the Democratic governor's race has been unusual.

While Greene and Levine are a huge part of the most costly primary ever, the way they have advertised has made voters very uncomfortable. It’s been like a prize fight between two candidates that are not even in the lead. They continue to attack Trump without telling voters what they need to hear.

“I have watched so many commercials with Greene and Levine and they are terrible,” Houston played a role in State Farm Insurance's bid to locate 8,000 new jobs there. One year ago, when Amazon asked cities to create proposals for its second headquarters, the online retailer indicated that it wanted to hear from cities with access to public transit.

The good news is, Congress has allocated a spending increase for the 2018 fiscal year budget for public transit.

"While this is a positive step forward in helping to address the nation's aging public transit infrastructure," Skoutelas says, "this momentum must be maintained by providing similar funding levels for 2019."

During the Trump administration, DeSantis raised his national profile with his frequent attacks on special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into the Trump administration and Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential election.

Hollywood Fire Rescue Distributes 1,600 ‘Stop the Bleed’ Kits

Hollywood - Thousands of small, red, lifesaving kits and information on how to use them will soon be spread throughout Broward County thanks to the efforts of the City of Hollywood Department of Fire Rescue and Beach Safety and Memorial Healthcare System. The two teamed up to promote a national effort to give ordinary people the tools they need to respond to traumatic injuries caused by accidents or acts of public violence. The city and the hospital system obtained $73,000 in grant funding to purchase lifesaving bleeding control kits and to train individuals with no medical background on how to use

them.

Earlier this week, Hollywood Fire Rescue personnel distributed the $42 kits to Fire Rescue agencies from nearly every municipality within Broward County, as well as Broward County Fire Rescue.

Memorial Healthcare System staff provided an overview on

how to use the first aid items in the kit. A person who is bleeding can die from blood loss within five minutes. Those nearest to them can help prevent loss of life by providing initial care.

The idea is to install the bleeding control kits in highly visible locations where people commonly

gather from parks and community centers to schools. Last year, Hollywood installed 115 kits in public areas throughout the city from City Hall to the ArtsPark at Young Circle to sports facilities and community centers.

“The success of the Stop the Bleed program so far in Hollywood has been tremendous. We have the kits in place now, many residents are trained to use them and we’ve raised awareness in our community. We want every member of

our community to have this life-saving tool at their disposal and the knowledge to use it. It’s their action that might help save a life,” said

Chris Del Campo, Hollywood Fire Rescue Division Chief, who spearheaded the effort to secure grant funding for the kits.

Pie Is Always A Sweet Treat That We All Just Love Key Lime, Pecan and Chocolate Peanut Butter are all favorites

When it comes to dessert, we love something sinful and delicious.

As the weather is still hot outside, and it’s a few months away from our fall temperatures, there is nothing like a homemade pie to top off any late summer, early fall meal.

Today, we have brought you a little sampling of pies that we all love - and remember fondly from our childhood.

CHOCOLATE PEANUT BUTTER PIE • 8 ounces chocolate wafers, crushed into • fine crumbs • 4 tablespoons butter, melted • 6 ounces dark chocolate, chopped finely • 1/3 cup heavy cream • 4 ounces cream cheese, room temperature • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, room temperature • 1 cup peanut butter • 1 cup powdered sugar • 14 fluid ounces sweetened condensed milk • 2 tablespoons milk • chocolate chips

Preheat oven to 350°F. Mix together the wafer cookie

crumbs and the butter until evenly coated.

Press the crumbs into the bottom of a 9" pie plate, pressing firmly to keep in place. Bake for 10 minutes. Remove and cool.

In a double boiler, melt the dark chocolate. Once melted, remove from heat and immediately whisk in 1/3 cup heavy cream; continue whisking until thick. Pour the ganache over the bottom of the pie crust, gently spreading with an offset spatula to cover the entire bottom.

In a large mixing bowl, whip together the cream cheese, remaining 4 tablespoons butter, and the peanut butter until smooth. Stir in the powdered sugar, followed by the sweetened condensed milk.

Pour the peanut butter mixture into the pie plate.

Refrigerate for 3 hours or until ready to eat. Top the pie with the chocolate chips as garnish. Serve cold.

KEY LIME PIE • 1 pinch salt • 1 1/2 c. all-purpose flour • 2 tbsp. all-purpose flour • 1 extra-large egg • 1/2 tsp. vanilla extract • 2 tbsp. molasses • 1/2 tbsp. ground ginger • 1/4 tsp. ground cinnamon

Filling: • 1 can sweetened condensed milk • 1/2 c. Key Lime Juice • 4 extra-large egg yolks • 1 tbsp. vanilla extract

For Crust: Preheat oven to 325 degrees F. In a medium bowl, mix cream sugar, butter, and salt until smooth. Add flour, egg, vanilla, molasses, ginger, and cinnamon and mix well to

form a smooth dough. Roll out dough on a lightly floured surface into a circle about 13 inches wide and 1/4 inch thick. Line a tart pan with a removable bottom with dough.

Trim excess dough. Bake crust until browned, 12 to 15 minutes.

For Filling: In a medium bowl, whisk together all ingredients. Pour into pie shell and bake until filling sets to consistency of a soft custard, about 15 minutes. Cool pie completely on a wire rack.

PECAN PIE • 1 pie crust • 1 3/4 c. pecan halves • 3/4 c. corn syrup • 1/2 c. dark brown sugar • 4 tbsp. butter • 1 tsp. vanilla extract • 3 large eggs

Preheat oven to 425ºF. Line a 9-inch glass pie plate with the pie-crust dough. Fold overhang under and pinch to form a decorative edge.

Line the pie shell with foil, fill with dried beans or uncooked rice and bake 15 minutes. Remove foil with beans or rice and return to oven until golden, 5 to 10 minutes longer. Cool on a wire rack.

Reduce oven temperature to 350ºF. Coarsely chop 1 cup pecans; reserve remaining pecan halves.

In large bowl, with wire whisk, mix corn syrup, brown sugar, melted butter, vanilla and eggs until blended. Stir in chopped pecans and pecan halves.

Pour filling into crust. Bake 45 to 50 minutes, until edges of filling are set (center will jiggle slightly). Cool completely on wire rack. Garnish with whipped cream before serving, if you like.

ArtsPark Friday Night Movie This Week Is ‘Nine Lives’; Fantastic Friday & Solar Blast Summer Concert Series

Hollywood - Each and every week, the City of Hollywood rolls out some impressive events - and this coming week will be no exception.

The weekend kicks off with the ArtsPark Friday Night Movie, featuring the movie “Nine Lives.” Tom is a billionaire whose workaholic lifestyle takes him away from his loving wife Lara and adorable daughter Rebecca. Needing a present for Rebecca's 11th birthday, he buys a seemingly harmless cat from a mysterious pet store. Suddenly, a bizarre turn of events traps Tom inside the animal's body. The pet store owner tells him that he has one week to reconnect with his family, or live out the rest of his days as a cute and furry feline named Mr. Fuzzypants.

Nine Lives is rated PG and show time is at 8:00 p.m. The ArtsPark at Young Circle Amphitheater is located at 1 Young Circle in Downtown Hollywood.

Solar Blast Summer Concert Saturday, August 25 Visitors to the ArtsPark at Young Circle in Downtown Hollywood may have noticed the solar trees recently installed by Florida Power and Light. The trees are, in part, powering the amphitheater stage equipment, as well as other ArtsPark fixtures.

In celebration of this green partnership, the Department of Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts is hosting a series of “Solar Blast Summer Fun Concerts” featuring local, live tribute bands. On Saturday, August 25th come out to enjoy “California Gwen,” a Katy Perry & No Doubt tribute band, set to perform at 8:00 p.m. Solar Blast Summer Concerts are free and lawn seating is available.
