As former Miami Beach Mayor Philip Levine, billionaire Palm Beach businessman Jeff Greene and Gwen Graham, the daughter of former Governor Bob Graham, beat each other up over the past two months with a campaign that centered around attacks rather than substance, it was Andrew Gillum, who surprised everyone when he grabbed the Democratic nomination and becomes the first ever African-

American gubernatorial candidate for the office.

The 39-year-old former Tallahassee Mayor came into the race with substance and knowledge as well as what needed to be done to change the Republican stranglehold in this state..

“What it came down to were the voters being tired of attacks and what has happened in the past year and a half in this White House administration,” Karen Thomaselli of North Miami Beach said. “There is too much hate and division in this America and Mr. Gillum and his supporters want to change that.”

By Larry Blustein sfsuntimes@aol.com With the primaries now behind us and all those lies and campaign promises that will never get fulfilled - getting many of the politicians nowhere - it’s time to talk about a different subject.

Florida needs to legalize marijuana for recreational usage - just like other states have, giving adults the right to do what they want with their own bodies.

Growing tired of hearing Morgan & Morgan and all these attention grabbing, no results kind of people, it’s time to take this to the voters - without the influence of politicians that can’t remember when they last told the truth.

What this comes down to is adults making a choice - much like they do with

alcohol and other mind-relaxing products.

“Florida is two different states in one,” Attorney A.J. Miller said. “The progressive part - which is south of Orlando - and north Florida, which very well be considered part of the good old south Bible Belt. To be of age and told that you cannot do this or that is somewhat demeaning.”

The very fact that so many states have passed the law is in the name of making money. After the government comes in and rips states off, by taking an unreal amount of cash without ever doing a thing to earn it, local economies have already watched the difference -

Hallandale Beach: Learning How To Balance The Budget

I have been asked is there any other way to balance the budget other than raising the millage rate?

Allow me to break the answer to this question down into four parts: Zero based budgeting – Early in August, the City Commission

With this exercise, City Department Directors were able to strategize and reduce budgets in the ranges from 3-18% and close the revenue deficit. We did not cut any proposed Public Safety staff and included seven sworn police personnel and six new fire rescue staff for next fiscal year.

Over the last 5 years, the prior administration has spent approximately $40 million in reserves.

Also the experts informed the commission, the projected sale of sanitation franchise would not produce the $3.1 million dollars in the first budget draft. Another $1.5 Million Dollars for reimbursement from FEMA for Hurricanes Irma and Maria which will not be received this fiscal year.

The FEMA reimbursements would also need to go back into reserves, instead of the General Fund, since the monies came from reserves to begin with.

Revenues - A nineyear streak of not raising

When these two square off on Nov. 6, it will be very important to see who is progressive and who is not. That is going to be the difference - and not about the money that had been thrown around by these candidates.

The months leading up to the primary, while crowded with candidates and hopefuls, will pale over the next two months - with the Democrats and Republicans trying to hold the edge.

From potential impeachment talks, to vital health care costs and just about anything that matters, this midterm election really has the potential to shake up things - in a major way. That’s why if you are not planning to vote, you should just stop reading this article now.

“This for our country is the most important midterm election that I can recall,” Alex Thomas said.

“I voted early for the primary and will do the same for the November election. It is our future that hangs in the balance. Living here in Aventura, we face local issues that will also impact us.”

A midterm election refers to a type of election where the people can elect their representatives in the middle of the term of the executive or of another set of members. In this country, the president and vice president are elected every four years in indirect (electoral college) presidential elections.

There is a list of things that await the winner of November’s election in Florida.

It will come down to which candidate gets in, and that is the reason why there will be a huge turnout.

Never before has something been so vital to everyone in Florida - and across the country.

Finally, it’s time to stop living in the past and understand that legalization of marijuana - with the same laws that alcohol and tobacco carry with them should certainly gain traction.

The state needs money, and no matter what is said negatively, the revenue that would come with it is something that so many states have not turned their backs to.

Decriminalizing the possession of marijuana is long overdue. Nine U.S. states have legalized marijuana for recreational use. Another 20 states have legalized just medical marijuana, including Florida, which did so through a state constitutional amendment that received the support of 71 percent of voters in 2016.

As we already know, Florida officials have done a terrible job implementing the amendment, putting roadblocks in the way of patients seeking to use marijuana to treat pain and other symptoms of debilitating diseases.

“As someone who would vote for it in a second, I am so over politicians like Governor Scott, who has never even taken the time to see what it would do for his own state,” Kiki Barnes of Hollywood pointed out.

To any clear thinking, rational human being that does not have “dictator” in their job title, legalizing marijuana would also free up our courts to handle real criminals and not someone who decided to smoke a joint.

As we already have stated several times in the past years, research has shown marijuana is less harmful than alcohol, and its medical benefits don’t come with the addictive nature and nasty side effects of prescription painkillers.

“To sit here and try to convince ignorant people who are old school thinkers with no progressive bones in their bodies is impossible,” Barnes said. “Because we are at the mercy of these politicians who don’t care, it continues to be a stalemate.”

As many continue to want to to be the spokesperson for legalizing marijuana, many continue to do more harm than good. Simply not having enough facts to hold a valid conversation is what has hurt the sup-

port.

The very fact that taxing marijuana would generate up to $1 billion in new annual revenue in Florida has fallen on deaf ears with those who need to be convinced. Using the money to bring up the salaries of Florida’s public school teachers would be enough to really gain some traction.

“Isn’t this crazy that we - of all places - are having this conversation,” Miller explained. “At one time, there was more marijuana coming into this state than anywhere in the world, but we never had the people with any intelligence to capitalize on it.”

A recent poll taken here in the Sunshine State revealed a majority of voters now support legalizing marijuana under a similar regulatory framework as alcohol.

LABOR DAY COMING ON MONDAY Labor Day will be observed on Monday, September 3rd this year to honor the many contributions of the individual worker to overall growth and prosperity of the United States. As a reminder, County and City Administrative offices will be closed in observation of the holiday on Monday, however many services will still be available to residents. Port Everglades Receives $2.25 Million in Security Grants Broward County’s Port Everglades will receive more than $2.25 million in U.S. port security grants to advance firefighting capabilities and enhance the seaport’s security infrastructure.

The FY 2018 Port Security Grant Program (PSGP) awards were announced on Friday by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). The program was funded at $100 million, and more than 36 ports received direct grants.

Hummus taken to a delicious & different level

Breaking from the tradition - and enjoy black bean and even boiled peanut drizzle in remaining 4 Tbsp. oil. Transfer purée to a medium bowl and mix in chives and parsley; season with salt and pepper. As more and more of us are finding out about the many ways you can prepare hummus, you would be surprised at how many different ways there are to create this popular dish.

The traditional garbanzo bean - or chickpea - is still the favorite, but you would be surprised at how many different taste treats you can come up with.

With September just a week away, fall is approaching quickly, and many will be looking to create some special meals. Today we give you a few hummus recipes to try.

BLACK-EYED PEA HUMMUS • 1 head of garlic • 5 tablespoons olive oil, divided • Kosher salt, freshly ground pepper • 1 15-ounce can black-eyed peas, rinsed • 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice • Pinch of cayenne pepper • 1 tablespoon chopped fresh chives • 1 tablespoon fresh flat-leaf parsley

Preheat oven to 425°. Rub off papery skins from outside of garlic and trim 1/2" off top. Place on a sheet of foil, drizzle with 1 Tbsp. oil, and season with salt and pepper. Wrap up in the foil, place on a baking sheet, and roast until tender, 30–35 minutes; let cool slightly.

Squeeze garlic cloves into a food processor. Add black-eyed peas, lemon juice, and cayenne, and pulse until a coarse purée forms. With motor running,

BLACK BEAN HUMMUS • 1 cup cooked black beans • 1 garlic clove, minced • 2 tablespoons olive oil • 2 tablespoons lemon juice • 1 tablespoon white wine vinegar • 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin • Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper • 1/2 head iceberg lettuce, cut into wedges

Blend all the ingredients, except the lettuce, in a food processor until almost smooth. Let sit for 15 minutes before serving with iceberg lettuce wedges.

SWEET POTATO HUMMUS • 1 cup mashed, cooked sweet potato • (about 1 medium sized potato; • baked or steamed • 1 3/4 cups cooked chickpeas (or 1 15-ounce • can chickpeas, rinsed and drained well) • 1/4 cup tahini • 2 tablespoons freshly squeezed lemon juice • 1 clove garlic, roughly chopped • 1/2 teaspoon salt • 1 teaspoon toasted sesame oil • 1/3 cup water • Sweet or smoked ground paprika, for garnish

Place all ingredients except for the water in a food processor fitted with the S blade. Pulse a few times

to break the chickpeas down.

Run the motor of the food processor and drizzle the water in in a thin stream. Continue processing for 2-3 minutes, or until the hummus is completely smooth. Sprinkle with paprika and serve. Leftover hummus will keep in an airtight container in the fridge for up to five days.

BOILED PEANUT HUMMUS • 1 cup shelled, boiled peanuts • (from about 2 cans) • 2 tablespoons tahini (sesame seed paste) • 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice • 1/4 teaspoon ground cumin • 1/8 teaspoon cayenne pepper • 1 small garlic clove • 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil • Kosher salt • Chips or pita

Put boiled peanuts, tahini, lemon juice, cumin, cayenne, and garlic in a food processor and pulse to combine. With processor running, slowly add oil.

Continue puréeing peanut mixture, adding water 1 tablespoon at a time, until the hummus is smooth. Season to taste with salt. Serve with chips or pita.

WHITE BEAN HUMMUS • 1 (24-ounce) can cannellini beans • 1 lemon, juiced • 1 teaspoon ground cumin • 2 garlic cloves, chopped • 1/2 cup tahini paste • Salt and pepper • 1/2 cup extra-virgin olive oil

Put the beans into the bowl of a food processor.

Add the lemon juice, cumin, garlic, tahini paste, and salt and pepper, to taste. Turn the processor on and slowly pour in the olive oil. Process until smooth and thick.

Humane Society of Broward County Receives $39,000 In Grant Funding Fort Lauderdale The Humane Society of Broward County (HSBC) announced its receipt of two grants from PetSmart Charities, the leading funder of animal welfare in North America.

The first grant for $24,000 will be used to test a new cleaning product and protocol to increase the safety and health of the shelter animals. Testing will include tracking the rate of effectiveness for a twelve month trial, with results shared with PetSmart Charities.

The second grant is for $15,000 to help offset medical expenses related to animals the shelter continues to receive

from Puerto Rico after the devastating hurricanes in 2017.

“We are honored that PetSmart Charities recognizes the valuable work we do for the animals in our community and beyond, and awarded our organization this funding. We are eager to start utilizing the new cleaning product and staff will be undergoing an extensive training to ensure it is properly used according to the manufacturer’s specifications. Our goal is to provide the hundreds of animals we care for daily, with a clean and disease free environment. The medical expense funding will help offset costs as-

sociated with spaying/ neutering, heartworm treatments, vaccinations and other medical conditions for animals that come from Puerto Rico,” said Mary Steffen, Senior VP of Operations for the HSBC.
