Bruised and battered Hurricane Irma brings high winds, tornadoes and street flooding

As all of the southeastern United States watched Hurricane Irma churn in the open waters of the Atlantic, eye-popping numbers such as 180 mile an hour sustained winds and 210

mile per hour gusts were enough for many to make plans way in advance.

Flying to the north, driving anywhere this giant of a storm wasn’t projected to come ashore. It was the most powerful storm the Atlantic Basin had ever seen.

As the days drew closer and the projections were more clearer, south Florida would not be

spared. High winds and flooding would indeed be present - and while there was not a direct hit, every community from Surfside through Sunny Isles Beach, North Miami Beach, Aventura, Hallandale Beach, Hollywood and Dania Beach would lose power and have their share of damage.

Hallandale Beach In Recovery Phase The City of Hallandale Beach continues to be in the Hurricane Irma recovery phase. Below is a bulletin update from Hallandale Beach City Manager Roger Carlton.

Power Status: FPL is aware of power issues in the City and is working on restoration. Residents are advised to call FPL directly at 1-800-4OUTAGE (1-800468-8243). Not the City, to check on the status of power outages.

Fire Rescue Chief Ellis discussed the City’s critical infrastructure sites with FPL representatives and on repowering and emphasized the need to restore our community as quickly as possible. FPL has committed that they should have the majority of South Florida back online by the weekend. Right now the following critical sites are without electricity (as of September 12th): • Department of Public Works / Emergency Operations Center (we have a generator and fuel has been delivered) • City Hall • OB Johnson Park • Fire Station Main, Fire Station Beach, Fire Station 3 Isles • Private Dialysis Center (patients are receiving service at an alternate site) Public Safety: The Police Department states that they have not had major new

incidents reported. A total of 45 sworn Police personnel are actively deployed throughout the City and performing patrol, business security detail and intersection management functions.

Fire and Rescue service remain at full capacity to meet the need of our residents.

All motorists are reminded to treat nonworking traffic signals a a four way stop.

Traffic signals flashing red are to be treated ad a stop sign. Flashing yellow traffic signals mean you may proceed slowly with caution. Please be courteous.

EOC:The Emergency Operations Center (EOC) continues to run from 8am - 8pm. Thee is limited telecommunication to the EOC, as we have experienced circuit failures from AT&T and Comcast.

The EOC hotline (954-457-3101) is still being answered b staff. Phone lines and cellular service has been intermittent. We have experienced the the most resilient form of communication with the public is email an social media.

Emergency management documentation, photographs, incident reports are being collected as required by FEMA. The city moved EOC operations to City Hall on Wednesday m09/13/17 at 8:00AM to have better telecommunications connectivity. The new number for the EOC, is 954-457-1319.

Utilities: The Finance Department has waived let fees and shutoffs during this period. A boil water notice remains in effect for DeSoto Pro South Condominium community, and the homes on SW 8 Ave between SW 7th and 11th St. The boil specific area water notices will remain open for at least till Thursday the 14th., since the 12th was the first opportunity for the laboratory to test samples.. The City has notified the community via social media channels and code red robots call.

These are the only areas in Hallandale Beach wit boil water notices. The rumors about other ares are to true.

Garbage Pickup: Garbage collection for multi-family and residential units are being performed and should be back to normal schedule by this weekend. This schedule is dependent on fuel being available.

Vegetive storm debris can be placed in the right-of way in front of your property, not on the pavement as that will impede ongoing restoration activities. Please keep the negative debris (tree limbs, leaves, branches) in a separate pile from all other wastes. Also, please keep the storm drains clear of storm debris. Non negative storm debris (roofing materials, boards and construction material) must be kept in your yard and will be picked up

later. A new post will be made as soon as we learn the exact dates and schedule for picking up non negative hurricane debris.

When we begin picking up the non-vegetive debris, customers will ned to move t to the right of way.

Development Services: Fees have been waived for Emergency small repairs related to storm damage. For more information, visit www.cohb.org/emergencyrepair. Te Building Division is available to assist residents and businesses with damage and related questions. Only two customers visited development services of non-emergency related permits. Although there were many people in the lobby today, the public was there for AC and to recharge their phones. Staff installed additional power outlets to assist the public with their power needs.

Other update: The Minibus service has resumed normal service. All City Parks are closed until further notice. The city is trying to get the parks open as soon as possible.All primary and secondary roadster open and the pavement is cleared of bedrid.

Restaurants and food stores are starting to open as power is urned on.

The First Budget Hearings has been rescheduled to Monday September 18th at 5:05 PM in City Hall.

Sunny Isles Beach Resources for Residents Post-Hurricane Irma Insurance Claims Depending on where you live, insurance adjusters may not be able to get in right away due to downed power lines or flooding. Now is the time to preemptively reach out and let your agents know your home and vehicle have sustained storm damage. That helps insurers know where to go to look for damage, and where to find you in the coming days and weeks to provide additional assistance. Report your claim as soon as possible. After you file the claim, write down your claim number and keep it handy for easy reference.

Keep receipts for any expenses related to immediate repairs you had to make to secure your home as well as any living expenses if you could not return to your home in the wake of the storm.

FEMA Assistance Anyone who suffered damage due to Hurricane Irma can apply for assistance from FEMA. Miami-Dade County has been approved for assistance. You can be either a homeowner or a renter to qualify and you don’t necessarily have to be insured. Visit disasterassistance.gov or call FEMA at 1-800-621FEMA.

Debris Removal Residents should begin to place their hurricane debris at the curbside.

Debris collection by the County’s Hurricane Irma recovery contractors will begin at a later date. Residents are discouraged from mixing yard trash and other household items such as furniture, carpeting, etc. Condos are re-

sponsible for their own debris removal through their usual dumpster/disposal service. Code Enforcement will be monitoring illegal dumping.

Waste Collection Residential and commercial garbage service resumed Tuesday, September 12. Residents whose regular garbage collection service falls on Tuesday should have their carts at the curbside for collection.

Residents whose garbage collection day was Monday, September 11 were serviced on Wednesday, September 13. This served as the makeup day for Monday’s suspended service.

Bulky waste scheduling remains suspended until further notice. No calls or online/phone app scheduling is

available to the public. However, there are bulky crews in the field who are addressing curbside trash piles.

Curbside recycling service will be suspended until Monday, September 18.

Penny Morris and her family rode out the storm in their home. While the only thing they lost was a few trees and of course, power, it was a chance that she took by keeping her family home.

“When we saw the direction it was headed there was no way that we were going to leave,” she said. “No matter where you went, the storm would have eventually followed and kept us from getting back. I am glad we stayed, but

next time, we would have to evaluate like we did this time and see what was best for us.”

While it was certainly no Category 3, 4 or 5, what Irma did to many of the communities was seriously disable the infrastructure. Flooding and damage from the dreaded “dirty side of the storm” kept this entire region on edge.

There were a number of tornadoes that added to the damage that the gusts of wind brought.

Several homes and businesses everywhere in southern Florida suffered some kind of damage due to the winds and flooding. Power stayed on in several areas, but for the majority -

some 70 percent - were, and still are, without power.

While it is no time to start finger pointing and many are frustrated from being hot and tired - we did escape the fury of the storm. Yes, we got hit, and no matter who you talk to - it was strong tropical storm to a low, low end hurricane - but the question many are asking is why was there were so many power outages, when winds were not nearly as strong as expected.

“It just seems that many of these outages could have been prevented,” Alison Parker-Sosa of Hallandale Beach explained. “I have often wondered why cities do not issue fines for

trees near power lines. I have been through enough storms to know how power is knocked out.”

When a storm arrives like this one, and the power goes out, the conversation about underground power lines begins. While it seems like a solution, there is much more to it - and the cost of doing it is an expense that many are not ready for.

Hurricane Irma: Recovery Efforts Underway in Hollywood

Hollywood - Recovery efforts from Hurricane Irma are well underway in the City of Hollywood. While many are still without power and there is substantial storm debris, the City did not suffer the devastating impacts a direct hit from a major hurricane would have brought. Street lights and traffic signals re-

main out, piles of storm debris line the streets, and the City remains under a boil water advisory.

Hollywood’s Department of Public Works is working to cleanup Hollywood Beach with heavy equipment being used to move sand off the Hollywood Beach Broadwalk, side streets and Surf Rd. Crews are

also using hand shovels to clear sand in areas that equipment cannot reach. While this work is underway, the City is asking people to avoid the beach area for the next few days. This will allow work to take place more quickly and without risk to the public.

The initial assessment of the City indicated downed trees and

power lines throughout Hollywood, minor property damage along with flooding in eastern neighborhoods. Extensive structural damage appears to be isolated.

The City has mobilized its debris contractor and efforts are focused on clearing primary corridors, then secondary roadways, neighborhood streets and alleyways.

Modified garbage service in Hollywood has resumed with residents being asked to put their garbage carts and all debris at the front curb even if they have a service alley. This will allow the alleys to be cleared and power crews from FPL to do their work.

As the winds from Hurricane Irma ripped trees from the ground, several water mains were broken.

This caused the water system in Hollywood to lose pressure creating the

need for the City’s Department of Public Utilities to issue a Boil Water Advisory. This advisory remains in effect.

Residents should not drink their tap water without boiling it first.

Bring all water to a rolling boil for one minute. Only boiled or bottled water should be used for drinking, making ice, brushing teeth, hand-washing dishes, and food preparation.

Utilities crews repaired all of the lines in the days immediately after the storm and now water testing is underway.

Once the tests come back clear, the City’s website and other notification systems will be used to let residents know the advisory has been lifted.

Thousands of residents have gotten information from the City’s website, www.hollywoodfl.org and Facebook pages, City of Hollywood, FL Govern-

ment and Hollywood Police Department, during the storm. Currently the website features helpful information about disaster assistance both for homeowners and businesses that the City hopes will be helpful as the community recovers from Irma.

With the changes being made with the insurance companies only paying out what their adjusters advised, that leaves many homeowners and condo associations without sufficient funds in order to perform all of the repairs.

"That's where we come in," Levitis explains. "The truth of the matter is that a lot of individuals get a fraction of what they need to fully fix their house. After the hurricane or storm hits a lot of insurance companies use out of state adjusters which results in less money for the policy holders."

When it comes to using a public adjuster, Levitis is serious about correcting the mistakes that the insurance companies have left behind.

Making some sense of nutrition labels

(BPT) - You can find them on the side of most every product at your local grocery store. They are plain and kind of boring but nutrition labels were designed to contain vitally important information for good health and wise food choices. These labels tell you the number of servings in a container, how many calories per serving, and what amounts of vitamins and essential nutrients (like sodium) they contain.

However, they don't just give you the raw data, they also tell you what percentage of your daily allowance of needed nutrients you are getting. When it comes to sodium, however, that may be a problem. The daily allowances are based on the 2015-2020 Dietary Guidelines, with guidance from the Institute of Medicine (IOM), now known as the Health and Medicine Division (HMD) of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (the National Academies).

The current FDA Dietary Guidelines call for

a maximum daily sodium allowance of 2,300 mg, well below what the average American eats, which is about 3,400 mg per day of sodium. But, when the IOM studied this issue and released their report in 2013, "Sodium Intake in Populations: Assessment of Evidence," they found no evidence to lower the daily allowance below 2,300 mg per day and some indication that doing so would be harmful. The level set by the FDA not only represents a significant populationwide sodium reduction effort, it also ignores the latest evidence.

An increasing amount of research is contradicting the FDA's sodium guidelines. A 2014 study, published in the New England Journal of Medicine found that the healthy range for sodium consumption was between 3,000 and 6,000 mg per day and eating less than 3,000 mg per day may increase the risk of death or cardiovascular incidents. And a 2011 study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association

Dr. Adler Using Laser In Battle Against Toe Fungus

According to the American Podiatric Medical Association, approximately 40% of patients visiting a podiatrist have complaints or signs of toe fungus. It may begin with tenderness or pain in the toe, developing into an unsightly thick, darkened nail, and it can spread from toe to toe. In fact, the fungus can get so out of control that it can infect the foot and ankle.

Topical treatment such as Lamisil cream usually is the first course of therapy for a mild or moderate case. However, long-term use or oral antifungal medication is not recommended due to the toxic side effects Lamisil can have on the liver. This is a special risk if a patient is taking other medications, including excessive use of Tylenol that can manifest the same hepatic damage.

Over the past few years, Dr. Charlton Adler has been following closely the application and reported results of laser therapy on fungus toenails and other podiatric and wound situations. He is pleased to announce that he now is able to add this service as a therapeutic option in his office in North Miami Beach.

“The introduction of laser in treating toe fungus has had a major impact on attacking this uncomfortable and unsightly problem,” says Dr. Adler. He further explains that Onychomycosis, the medical term for fungal infection of the nail, is often ignored because it can be present for years without causing pain. “When the fungus imbeds itself under the nail,” he adds, “ the nail surface can become darker in color and the area can develop an odor.

The fungus lives on debris under the nail, and white marks can appear on the nail plate.”

Approved for the treatment of nail fungus five years ago by the Food and Drug Administration, the special appeal of lasers is that it selectively heats and destroys harmful fungi while sparing healthy surrounding skin. Because of the intensity of the heat generated by laser rays, Enrique Mechulon a specially trained and certified laser technician working with Dr. Adler, says that both he and the patient wear laser protective glasses and take several rest periods during the 40-minute process.

“I have already witnessed many success stories where patients have spent years and thousands of dollars to get rid of their nail fungus,” says Mechulon. “Depending on the patient’s general health and nail problem, it can take anywhere from one to nine treatments, but the results are there with minimum risk to the body,” he adds.

“I have wanted to offer this therapy for quite a while,” says Dr. Adler. “However, I am cautious in my approach, and I needed more proof on studies and reports.” Dr Adler adds that research shows that 80% of all toe fungus has been healed using laser therapy. “This is in contrast to topical ointments that only work 50% of the time,” says Adler, “and with topical treatment, the infection usually returns.”

Lessons Learned In Hiring A Private Aide By the daughter of an Aventura mom

Finally, I found the perfect person to look after mom, who could no longer live alone safely. Marie, the aide, was referred by another aide in mom’s building, who seemed to take great care of a very demanding neighbor who was showing signs of confusion like my mother. During the interview process, Marie demonstrated patience, attentiveness to mom’s needs, and had glowing references. I even called two of them, who were out of state, but who affirmed how good Marie was to them or their family member. What a relief! After three weeks in Florida, I finally was able to return to my family in Ohio and feel that mom was in good hands.

At first, all was fabulous. Mom said Marie helped her with showering, picking out her clothes, made small meals, and they went to dinner a lot. Mom also said Marie helped her clean out her drawers and closets, and helped her organize her things.

Then, mom began to complain that Marie moves things around, and mom cannot find them. She told Marie to keep things in one place, and that Marie raising her voice to her. I spoke to Marie, who said mom moves things around herself, and then cannot find them. I suggested that since mom can get confused, it might be best to organize things the way it would be easier for her. The next day, mom called and said her diamond ring and earrings were missing, and the $400 spare money that she has kept in the corner of her bedside table for years was also missing. I asked to speak to Marie. Mom informed me that Marie went down to the store and had not yet returned.

When I called back later, mom said Marie still had not returned and she did not know what she should do for dinner. I called Security in mom’s building. They had not seen the aide since she left in the morning. I asked them to check on mom. Feeling upset myself, I called another neighbor, asking if she could either include my mother in her dinner plans or help mom order delivery from a local restaurant, and then see to it that she had something for breakfast in the morning.

I called the Aventura police to report a possible theft, and booked an early morning flight back to Florida.

What an ordeal followed. However, at least mom was not physically harmed!

Although I had resisted going through an agency due to a slightly higher cost, I began a rapid search of getting competent help as soon as possible, calling mom’s doctors and going online. The name Always Classic Care came up several times. When I called, the staff was most professional asking about mom’s status and needs. The owner, Terry Adler, joined the conversation with more specific questions about mom’s personality and capability status, as well as my concerns and services I felt mom would need. Terry advised me that she and her staff would confer immediately to select the most suitable aide, and that she would personally supervise the case. To my surprise, once paperwork was completed with staff, Terry called me back to report she had someone very special for mom who could start later that evening or first thing in the morning. I was amazed. Well, mom hit it off with the new aide immediately, and she has now been with mom for the over a year. It definitely was a great match.

Although I had avoided going through an agency because of the slightly higher cost, it took a bad experience for me to realize the many advantages of using a home health agency or nurse registry.

Aside from dealing with professionals, home health agencies are regulated by the State of Florida. All of their healthcare workers must submit to a rigorous screening process that includes FBI fingerprinting for any history of wrong doing. A registered agency such as Always Classic Care requires a personal interview conducted by a professional staff who also scrutinize documentation of training, references and work history, and applicants are required to complete preemployment testing as to knowledge of various levels of care. Also, if there is any problem , question, personality or communication issue once the aide is assigned, the agency will get involved and make immediate changes. And, as in the case of the missing Marie, Terry told me they would have become integrally involved in the investigation. I found that the agency may cost a few dollars more per hour than a private hiring, but now, the cost seems minimal when compared to the open communication and peace of mind that it can bring.

Hallandale Beach braced for the worst

By Mayor Joy Cooper Hallandale Beach - Irma “the Goddess of War”, luckily she was not as strong as we anticipated, but she did do plenty of damage. As an elected official for a city of 38,000 plus residents these are the times we look to our Emergency Coordinator and our professional staff. As mayor, I along with the city manager declare an emergency but the process begins way before.

Just like residents and businesses prepare, our entire city must be prepared. That means every facility and all infrastructure must be secured. We also must make sure all construction sites are secured. This takes every department and their directors’ leader. Once a warning is posted we work the plan. The city manager meets with all staff directors for briefings. The Emergency Operation Center is activated. Our Fire Chief Mark Ellis is the EOC head and key contact. This year our city was working on communications thru many avenues code red, Facebook, email alerts. These are great but not one hundred present once internet goes down. I keep pushing information though Facebook.

you thought was best. Our city manager requested and I agreed that messages had to remain consistent. So, keeping with the critical nature of information I and other elected officials sent out the generated updates by our city manager, our staff or Broward County.

Our staff was working around the clock and are still is in recovery mode. We really dodged a bullet. The biggest complaint that I have received has been about electric. To put matters in perspective during Andrew 1.5 million lost power, this storm effected 6.5 million. The storm hit on Saturday and by Tuesday over half the city had power. City Hall and other critical sites on Tuesday still did not have power. We are lucky to have generators on site at many of our facilities.

I know if you did not have power you were still frustrated. During Wilma, our city was without power for eight days, hopefully your power is on if it is not please call me or FPL. I wanted to publicly to thank all our employees, every single person is part of a great team. City Manager Roger Carlton made sure everything was covered, we are lucky to have our own staff. Many cities do not have staff but depend of contracted services. Our Fire has been working the EOC. Police staff out and about manning intersections DPW insuring our water and sewer is functioning. Some special thanks go out to our DPW workers that repaired a water main break on Saturday during the storm. Without it many would be without water.
