"That's where we come in," Levitis explains. "The truth of the matter is that a lot of individuals get a fraction of what they need to fully fix their house. After the hurricane or storm hits a lot of insurance companies use out of state adjusters which results in less money for the policy holders."

When it comes to using a public adjuster, Levitis is serious about correcting the mistakes that the insurance companies have left behind.

It happens every year, and without DisasterStruck Public Adjusters Inc., homeowners would be lost.

“I had an instance where the old board did not want to provide insurance info to the new board, even though, they are supposed to do that.

It's very important that we get that message across to all new boards, he continued.”

While admitting that he is willing to come to the aid of homeowners in a variety of loss claims cases, Levitis concedes that the majority of the damages he deals with, are from the after effects of Hurricanes or storms.

"Our company can help with any kind of damage," Levitis adds.

"At the moment, however, we find ourselves dealing with the damage inflicted from the recent storm, we are here to help you.”

While dealing with several homeowners in the past, Levitis made a point to mention his efforts towards working with Condo Associations in the present and near future.

"We are able to work with both homeowners and Condo Associations," Levitis states clearly. "To me, a Condo Association manages and represents the entire building. I basically work with the Condo Association towards helping them recover the proper fees towards repairing their buildings.”

Levi’s also noticed that a lot of Condo Associations are strapped for budgets and can't get financing from banks.

When talking further about Condo Associations in the south Florida area, Levitis insists that there are an abundance of cases that go unnoticed.

"I've been working with a lot of Condo Associations in Aventura and in Hollywood," Levitis notes. "A lot of them had their roofs torn off back in 2005 during Hurricane Wilma and they weren't compensated for it. A lot of the balconies were ripped off and you can find situations like that all throughout Aventura.

The insurance company tried to say that it was old damage and that it didn't meet the deductible."

"When we're there with you from the beginning, we can work beside you throughout the entire process,” Levitis said. “When the insurance company sends out their own adjuster, we'll be there too, as your own personal advocate to oversee the process."

up failing miserably to make a critical decision that ended in the death of eight residents. Six died from heat-related issues; the causes of the other two deaths will remain under investigation.

Even though there were “personal” calls made to Governor Scott to advise him that the facility's air conditioning system was not fully functional, not getting immediate help from right next door at Memorial is indeed the reason that this will be in the spotlight for years and years to come.

“We were told that this was a place where my mother would be safe for a storm,” said Bendetta Craig of Miramar. “Safe does not mean someone neglected the most important details with seniors who are at your facility for a reason.”

While Craig’s mother, Edna Jefferson survived this “calamity,” she was not hiding her feelings at all, and that was the theme from those who had family members and friends residing there.

“If I had the chance to tell the owners my true feelings, I would tell them ‘shame on you – shame on you,’” said Craig. “How does this happen? There has to be blame to go around.”

While this assisted living facility was indeed a tragedy, could it happen at others throughout a very senior-populated South Florida?

Miko Thomas is a nurse in Miami-Dade and Broward Counties. She has been working with rehab centers for 20 years, privately and as a staff member.

She is often amazed at how unprepared people are – especially when they need to step up and make positives happen.

“You hate to pile on top of any tragic situation, but my belief is that any assisted living facility should be equipped with everything possible,” Thomas said.

It has been over a decade since any real storm has affected this area, and 25 since a truly life-altering system has affected South Florida. In that time, every business - including assisted living facilities needed to go over every plan and scenario possible.

“We probably have as large a senior population as anyone, and for that reason alone, things like generators that could hook up air conditioning should have been more than a priority,” Private Nurse Alison Parker explained. “It’s just so frustrating to think that this tragedy should have never happened.”

When the rooms at a Hollywood nursing home became too hot earlier in the week, some of the elderly patients were rolled out in their beds and wheelchairs into the hallway on the second floor.

Many family members said at a Thursday press conference that they had no idea of the conditions at the facility, which lost power during Hurricane Irma.

They said they learned about the multiple deaths from news reports on Wednesday.

The Hollywood Police Department opened a criminal investigation that many believe could lead to manslaughter charges if the Broward state attorney’s office concludes that employees, administrators or the owner of the center acted with culpable negligence — “an utter disregard for the safety” of the deceased elderly patients.

“Like anything, until the facts are all in, this potential manslaughter case would also depend on what steps, if any, the center’s employees and administrators took to address the lack of power at the facility,” Hallandale Beach Attorney Marcia Kerwin said. “It doesn’t sound real promising, but we were not there

Sadly, the Broward Medical Examiner’s office released the names of the dead Wednesday. They were: Carolyn Eatherly, 78; Miguel Antonio Franco, 92; Estella Hendricks, 71; Betty Hibbard, 84; Manuel Mario Mendieta, 96; Gail Nova, 71; Bobby Owens, 84; and Albertina Vega, 99.

Because we live in South Florida, and yes, will be impacted by some kind of tropical system, every resident, in every city should speak up and help write laws that will protect everyone.

If you research the issue through the years, FP&L has long warned all about keeping limbs away from power lines, but all they can do is tell you – and cannot enforce it.

That is where cities come into play. While it will be expensive, and not everyone will agree, if fines start being sent out by each city, residents and business owners will get it. That way in the aftermath of a storm, the time without power will drop dramatically.

As cleanup continues, it could have been a lot worse in Hallandale Beach

By Mayor Joy Cooper Hallandale Beach - It is hard to imagine how different our City would be if Irma stayed her course. I along with my colleagues have had the opportunity to witness first hand our staff working hard towards recovery. Many residents are unaware what really goes on behind the scene. Every single staff person has a duty. They all worked well into Thursday before having the chance to secure their own homes. Many also stay at the EOC before during and after the storm. This storm still took its toll. As of the writing of the article 4 condominiums still did not have power.

Cable services were still sporadic.

Crews are still picking up debris. As a note, all debris must be separated.

Household items and other damaged goods mustbe piled three feet apart. Below is the letter I sent to our leadership team who were in charge of our 400 plus employees.

I wanted to thank you all for getting us through Irma. We were very fortunate to be spared what could have been a catastrophic event for many of our residents especially the most vulnerable. There are two things I worry about as the Mayor of the city; the call letting us know there was a shooting death of an officer or resident and flooding, severe damage and possible loss of life from hurricanes.

Having been through a few of these storms. I know that we have a great team and are fortunate to have the “people power” to cover our residents and city unlike many contract cities. From the men and woman at DPW to our first responders in HBPD and HBFD I witnessed time and time again our employees stepping up to the plate uniting and getting the job done.

From the time, we issued the Declaration of Emergency your leadership and the leadership of Chief Mark Ellis ensured our plan was followed. It was an honor to sit through one of the briefings and support you and all our staff. Every issue was worked through thoughtfully and with expedience.

As a note, I am not sure what department checked in our nursing facilities before and after the storm but thank you all for that policy.

Nydia what can I say. You are a true tested leader and know this city like the back of your hand. You did not skip a beat even with your parents in Puerto Rico.

Steve wow!! Two water mains fixed during this event!! Kudos. Also, every worker has been amazing from the management of the traffic signs and lights, monitoring pumping and lift stations, trash removal and cleaning up the streets so quickly I am proud and grateful. So are many of our residents.

Even with the EOC glitch our commission and residents were kept up to date on all timely information and notices. After sitting through daily Mayor confer-

ence calls and county briefings I can say we had the best information and the best anchorman! Jeremy as the newest member of the team I know you were part of the EOC and want to thank you for your continued service during the storm.

On a brighter note the City Manager has made the decision to hire Major Sonia Quinones as our new Chief of Police. Chief Quinones is a twenty for year veteran of our police force that has come up thru the ranks. She was selected out of 60 applicants 6 of which were internal candidates. Many of our residents already know Chief for here professionalism and leadership. I along with the commission agree that it is wonderful to have so many internal candidates.

I want to thank them for offering their services. I am sure they will agree with me that Chief Quinones enthusiasm understanding of the department and more importantly her knowledge of our community will make her and excellent Chief. Congratulations Chief Sonia Quinones.!!!

Hollywood - The City of Hollywood’s garbage collections have resumed per the normal collection schedule. Gray garbage carts should be placed out in front of your property, even if you have an alleyway.

All alley collections have been suspended; garbage collections will take place curbside until further notice.

Recycling collections are set to resume on Monday, September 25th per the regular collection schedule. Blue recycling carts should also be placed out in front of your property for collection. If your recycling cart is currently overflowing and you cannot wait for collections to resume next week, you may choose to place your blue recycling cart curbside to be collected as garbage.

Normal commingled collections for household items such as hard junk, furniture and mattresses are suspended until further notice. Residents are being asked to refrain from placing these items out until normal commingled collections resume.

STORM-RELATED DEBRIS COLLECTIONS Broward County is currently experiencing a shortage of qualified, equipped contractors and laborers to remove Hurricane Irma storm debris. This regional resource shortage is directly impacting the City of Hollywood’s storm recovery efforts. The City is working with Federal, State and County officials as well as contracted vendors to address the issue and get more crews working on debris collections in Hollywood.

Due to the sheer volume of storm debris, coupled with the extensive labor shortages in the County, recovery and clean-up efforts are now anticipated to take several months. Residents are asked to do their part by separating downed tree limbs, palm fronds and other vegetation from construction or bulky items damaged in the storm. Storm damaged items, such as downed fencing, carpet or appliances should be placed in a separate pile away from vegetation.

Storm debris collection services are for residential properties only. The City’s debris management companies will not collect debris that is placed curbside at commercial properties.

Hollywood, as a participating City, allows residents wishing to have their pile cleared more quickly the option of bringing their residential debris to any of the three Broward County Residential Drop-Off Centers.

Drop-off Centers are located at 5601 W. Hallandale Beach Boulevard in West Park; 5490 Reese Road in Davie and 2780 N. Powerline Road in Pompano Beach. Due to Hurricane Irma, the hours of operation at these sites have been extended to Thursday, September 21 through Saturday, September 23 from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Proof of Hollywood residency is required. By Larry Blustein sfsuntimes@aol.com There is nobody that needs to remind South Floridians that we still have nearly three months left in the 2017 hurricane season.

As Hurricane Irma skirted South Florida and Jose headed toward the northeast, we now see that major Hurricane Maria will also be in the neighborhood by the weekend - and while projections at press time - had the massive storm moving east of us - this past 10 days has certainly taught all of us a lot about what we need to do in getting ready to prepare for the rest of the season.

Until the end of November, when the tropical waters cool down a bit, we are going to be - as we are every year - on

guard. While Irma did impact us - many believe it was a dress rehearsal for that Cat 5, like Andrew, that greatly impacts this area.

“For years, we have all had that attitude that yes, a hurricane can hit, but all those close calls didn’t get the attention they should have,” Emily Brown of Hollywood said. “I was born the year after Andrew hit, so I do not have those vivid memories. I can only listen to those who have gone through this before.”

As 80 percent of the local population has never been through a life-altering hurricane in South Florida, did they learn anything from this brush that rendered over 1 million without power?

“While stocking up with supplies and securing your home, there were a million things that could have been done differ-

ently,” Brown said. “Chargers, pre-buying more fuel for the generator and understanding that gas stations and stores do not open right away, were among those challenges that I never thought about.”

You can have all the preparedness events and give away first aid kits all you want, but the only way that anyone is going to be able to fully prepare for a storm is to go through it yourself. There are no seminars that can prepare you for your roof blowing off - or two feet of water rushing into your home. Experience is key in everything, and a majority of those who are telling you what to do, have never gone through a storm themselves.

“So many people were quick to evacuate and get out of the area that they didn’t think about those who were left behind to battle the storm,” McKenzie Parker of

Broward County residents trash schedule Regular garbage and recycling collection has resumed in the Broward Municipal Services District (BMSD), and hurricane debris removal will commence starting this week.

Residents of the BMSD are encouraged to follow the guidelines listed below when placing hurricane debris curbside to ensure that it is picked up.

DO: Continue to watch the news for information regarding the reinstatement of garbage and recycling services.

Keep waste separated at the curb for easier collection (yard debris and bulk waste).

Cut all tree limbs into sections 4 feet in length and 50 pounds or less and stack neatly at the curb.

Place all debris curbside. (Collection contractors can only pick up debris from the curb.) It will take several weeks to completely clear debris.

Understand that all services will resume as soon as possible, although it may be several weeks before bulk waste collections are reinstated and hurricane debris is removed. The first priority will be to remove hurricane debris prior to reinstating bulk waste collection.

Prepare your debris for collection according to the guidelines above if FPL or AT&T cuts down branches or trees in your yard.

DON'T: Use garbage bags, plastic bags, paper bags or cardboard boxes for putting out household garbage.

Rely on County personnel and collection contractors to remove debris from locations other than curbsides or public roadways.

You risk property damage or personal injury by placing debris near a fence, mailbox, poles, or

on top of power line equipment.

•Place items in front of vacant lots-they won't be collected.

Relax this weekend with some delicious cocktails

After Hurricane Irma, we all needed a tasty way to beat the stress & unwind of the shaker over cherries and serve immediately.

CLASSIC MARGARITA • Lime wedge, plus 2 lime wheels for garnish.

• 1 tablespoon coarse salt, for glass rims.

• 4 ounces high quality blanco tequila • (see note above).

• 2 ounces Cointreau • 1 1/2 ounces fresh juice from 2 limes

With Hurricane Irma now passed us - and many have their power back on - it’s time to spend this weekend relaxing and kicking back.

No shutters, generators, standing on line for gas and water. Just you and some great cocktails to wind down what has been a tough two weeks in our region.

Today, we give some quick and easy, but very tasty beverages to enjoy.

MARTINI • 2 ounces dry gin • 1 ounce dry vermouth • 1 dash orange bitters (optional, but • highly recommended)

Combine ingredients in a mixing glass and fill with ice. Stir well to chill and strain into a chilled cocktail glass. Twist a piece of lemon peel over the drink and use as garnish, or, if you must, toss in an olive.

1 ounce Dolin Blanc vermouth.

1/2 ounce Cocchi Americano (sub Bonal or Suze if desired). lemon twist, for garnish.

Combine gin, Dolin, and Cocchi Americano in a mixing glass filled with ice. Stir until well chilled.

Strain into chilled cocktail glass. Add garnish and serve.

MANHATTAN COCKTAIL • 4 ounces rye whiskey • 2 ounces sweet vermouth • 4 dashes Angostura bitters • Garnish: 2 Maraschino cherries

Pour the whiskey, sweet vermouth, and bitters into a mixing glass filled with ice. Stir until outside of shaker is very cold to touch.

Place a maraschino cherry in each of two chilled cocktail glasses. Dividing evenly, strain the contents

Run lime wedge around the outer rims of two rocks glasses and dip rims in salt. Set aside.

In cocktail shaker, combine tequila, Cointreau, and lime juice. Fill with ice and shake until thoroughly chilled, about 15 seconds (the bottom of a metal shaker should frost over).

Fill glasses with fresh ice and strain margarita into both glasses. Garnish with lime wheels and serve.

CAIPIRINHA • 2 ounces cachaça • 1/2 of a fresh lime, cut into quarters • 1 to 2 teaspoon superfine sugar, to taste

Place the lime pieces and sugar in the cocktail shaker and crush with the muddler. Add cachaça and a handful of ice; shake well and pour, unstrained, into a rocks or old fashioned glass.

GRAPEFRUIT & GINGER SPARKLER • 1 ounce fresh squeezed grapefruit juice • 1/2 ounce Domaine de Canton ginger liqueur • 3 to 4 ounces Prosecco or other sparkling wine • Grapefruit wedge to garnish

Pour the grapefruit juice and Domain de Canton in a champagne glass. Gently pour the prosecco over top until glass is nearly full. Garnish with a grapefruit wedge.

A GROUND-BREAKING HIRE Hallandale Beach Names Sonia Quiñones As Police Chief

On Monday, Major Sonia Quiñones was named as new Hallandale Beach Police Chief, effective Oct. 1. She has been with the department for 24 years.

By Larry Blustein sfsuntimes@aol.com For the past 24 years, Sonia Quiñones has done it all for the Hallandale Beach Police Department.

From her diligent work in the field, to the community service she has put in throughout the entire City, Quiñones has been admired and appreciated. On Monday, she found out just how important she was.

Currently a Major, Quiñones broke the ceiling when she was appointed as Police Chief, and will take over on Oct. 1 - as Dwayne Flournoy, chief for the past seven years, steps down.

“I’m very excited and blessed for this amazing opportunity,” Quinones said. “As chief, I will act as an agent of change while cultivating a positive culture.

My key goals will be improving public safety, public trust and employee morale.”

Quiñones, who will oversee 143 employees, including 101 full-time officers, was chosen from among more than 60 applicants nationwide — including “five internal” candidates.

“She’s distinguished herself and has a vision of where our police department needs to go,” City Manager Roger Carlton said. “She is one of the most respected by the entire police department.”

Carlton spoke about her leadership in adverse situations - such as the community’s recent brush

with a very unpredictable Hurricane Irma.

“I watched her in action during the recent storm, where she was in charge of the police department a number of times. She handled herself the way you want anyone who happens to be in charge,” Carlton explained.

Flournoy, who began in the Hallandale Beach Police Department as a resource officer at Hallandale High, came a long way, implementing changes throughout the past seven years. He told the City of Hallandale Beach that he will remain on board for a couple months as an advisor to the City Manager to help with the transition.

“It’s always good when a department can promote from within,” Flournoy said.

Major Quiñones has been a member of the department since June 1993 and has risen through the ranks. She has a Master’s Degree in Public Administration (2011) and a Bachelor’s Degree in Public Administration (2007), both from Barry University.

In addition, Chief Quiñones is a graduate of the FBI Academy in Quantico Virginia (2012). Chief Quiñones has attended many other courses and achieved numerous awards and accolades during her 24-year career with the Hallandale Beach Police Department.
