What is it about politicians that make them think they control the very people who put them in office?

This state is far from progressive and that is why leadership is always looking to raise taxes and searching for handouts from anyone and everyone who wants to do business.

From totally ignoring what legalizing marijuana for recreational usage can do for our economy - to now controlling casino gaming and the billions of dollars

that the industry could pump into the Sunshine State.

As all eyes are on Nov., 6 and who will be the next governor, there are other very important issues that could go a long way in determining what the future of this state, and all of our local communities, are facing.

What Amendment 3 is all about is giving the Voter Control of the Gambling Amendment and it puts Florida’s future in voters’ hands when it comes to gambling. For far too long, gambling interests have flooded Florida’s political system with campaign contributions and Casino, Page 7A

Hallandale Beach Short-term vacation rentals are increasingly common becoming across various communities in South Florida.

The short-term vacation units offer visitors alternative options to visit our great City and provide additional economic activity to Hallandale businesses and services providers. Because of the growth in the disruptive technologies from sites like Air BNB, HomeAway, and VBRO. The City Commission

adopted vacation home rental ordinances to protect the character of our single-family neighborhoods, condominiums and co-ops buildings to address the noise, public safety, trash, parking and traffic which inevitability comes with short-term vacation rentals.

Recently, the first citation was issued for repeated illegal activity at a vacation rental. All residents and property owners should know that short-term vacation rental registration is required in Hallandale Beach. Do you lease or rent your residence to vacationing guests more than three times per year? Do the terms of each lease or rental equal to less than 30 days each? Then you are required to register the property and avoid fines, we encourage compliance with the law.

CITY BUDGET IS APPROVED On another note, I look forward to a new productive fiscal year, which starts on October 1st, 2018. Our recent approval of the City Budget affords the ability to continue delivering core services which all of us enjoy. The Commission approved the budget without dipping into reserves to pay for day to day expenses.

better accountability of each dollar allocated for core city services. Public safety initiatives, road improvement projects, storm water, sewer operations, sanitation, and utility water services will continue to perform and the highest levels, and we look forward to serving you better. One in Three Florida Seniors Think They Made a Mistake When Choosing Their Medicare Advantage Plan A recent survey commissioned by Devoted Health found that 33 percent of Florida seniors polled felt they made a mistake when choosing their Medicare Advantage plan.

The most common reason why, given by 66 percent of the dissatisfied respondents, was that they have more health needs than they did five years ago and their current plan is no longer sufficient. This sentiment was reflected by the nearly half of respondents (49 percent) who said that their current plan did not cover enough.

Additionally, 32 percent of respondents who felt they chose the wrong plan said that something was missing from their relationship with their doctor, citing feelings that their doctor had become too busy to adequately meet their needs, did not listen to them, or did not care about them as individual patients as much as they should.

Devoted Health Florida Market President Dariel Quintana says the annual Medicare Advantage open enrollment period that begins October 15 is a good time for seniors to assess their plans and even consider switching doctors.

“If seniors feel like they could be cared for better, they should consider switching healthcare plans or doctors,” Quintana explained. “Sometimes making a change can result in much better care, coverage, or costs.”

When choosing the right plan, it’s also important for seniors to consider which factors are most important to them. For half of all survey respondents, what mattered most was finding a plan that had their doctor in-network, while 42 percent said they cared most about finding the best price for the right benefits.

“Seniors should make a list of what is important to them as a healthcare consumer,” Quintana said. “The list should include three considerations. What prescription drugs are important to them? What hospitals are important to them? Are there any specific physicians that are important to them? Writing all this down is very helpful in making sure that when they sit down with an insurance agent, they will have a clear understanding of what their Medicare Advantage plan needs to do for them.”

lobbyists. It is time to restore the time-honored standard of requiring voter approval for any casino gambling.

“The thing that has always angered me when it comes to issues like this is, we the citizens of this state, who watch our taxes rise and services cut, have no input,” Brianne Wallace of Dania Beach pointed out. “If we feel that legalizing marijuana for recreational usage is going to help lower our cost of living, then the voters should have a say. It only makes sense.”

While this is NOT about marijuana, which will be legal in 20 states over the next 5-10 years - pumping millions into slumping economies - it is about something that hits close to home for many in this area.

With numerous struggling casino and parimutuel establishments, this is something that will be needed to keep up with an industry that is ever-growing, especially in a slice of heaven such as south Florida.

Regardless of your position on gambling, we can all agree that it isn’t a decision we should take lightly. That one decision can have a huge impact – on our state, on our local communities, on our businesses and families. So we should all have a say on approving new kinds of casino gambling in Florida.

What Amendment 3 ensures is that people, not politicians, control decisions about casino gambling in Florida. For nearly a century, approval of casino gambling was strictly left for voters to decide. Amendment 3 simply seeks to return to that standard to approve casino gambling.

The measure would consider card games, casino games, and slot machines to be casino gambling. The measure would not consider parimutuel wagering on horse racing, dog racing, or jai alai exhibitions to be casino gambling. It would not impact casino gambling on Native American tribal lands established through statetribe compacts.

“This amendment ensures that Florida voters will have the exclusive right to decide whether to authorize casino gambling in the State of Florida,” Lawyer Steven Thomas said. “Gambling is unlike most issues that are often dealt with at the local level. Because of a federal law, called the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act (IGRA), any gambling made legal in Florida must be given to Native American tribes.”

Amendment 3 is that it’s putting Floridians back in charge of making decisions for our future.

HISTORY OF GAMBLING IN FLORIDA Prior to 1931, gambling was outlawed in the Sunshine State. The Florida State Legislature passed a law to allow wagering on horse racing and dog racing, which Gov. Doyle Carlton (D) vetoed. Legislators voted to override the governor's veto, enacting the law on June 5, 1931.

In 1935, the state legalized slot machines, but then repealed the law in 1937 following voters banning slot machines through ballot measures in multiple counties.

In 1987, the state launched the Florida State Lottery after voters approved an amendment the previous year. The vote was 63.57 percent to 36.43 percent.

The Seminole Tribe of Florida began operating a bingo hall in 1979. In 1988, Congress passed the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act (IGRA), allowing tribes to establish casino gambling on tribal land. The act permitted states to form compacts with tribes to regulate Class III gaming, but not to regulate Class I and Class II gaming. Class I and Class II gaming were defined to include traditional tribal gaming with minimal prizes, bingo, and card games.

Delicious Pork Chops Prepared Some Unique Ways

Smothered, stuffed, crispy or any way that you like the tasty ‘other white meat’

• 4 pork chops • 2 tbsp. extra-virgin olive oil, divided In a large bowl, combine cream cheese, sour cream, mayo, artichoke hearts, spinach, garlic, mozzarella and Parmesan. Season with salt and red pepper flakes.

Using a paring knife, cut pockets in the thickest part of the pork chops and stuff with cream cheese mixture.

In a large skillet, heat 1 tablespoon oil over medium heat. Add pork chops and cook 4 minutes per side until golden and cooked through. Repeat with the last two pork chops and serve.

For some, they have never had that WOW moment when it comes to these delicious taste treats. But for others, creations with pork chops has become an obsession.

Today, we give you a few pork chop recipes to try at home.

SMOTHERED PORK CHOPS • 4 thick, bone-in pork chops • kosher salt • Freshly ground pepper • 1 c. all-purpose flour • 2 tsp. garlic powder • 1/4 c. vegetable or canola oil, plus • 3 tablespoons, divided • 2 medium yellow onions, thinly sliced • 2 tbsp. butter • 1 1/2 c. low-sodium chicken broth • 1/4 c. heavy cream • Chopped fresh parsley, for garnish

Season pork chops all over with salt and pepper.

In a shallow dish, mix together flour with garlic powder and chili powder. Coat pork chops in flour, shaking off excess. Reserve 2 tablespoons seasoned flour.

In a large, heavy skillet over medium heat, heat oil until shimmering. In batches, cook pork chops until golden, 4-5 minutes per side. Transfer to plate. Wipe out skillet.

Reduce heat to medium low, pour in remaining oil, and add onions. Season with more salt and pepper and cook until very soft and slightly caramelized, 15-20 minutes. Add butter and let melt, then sprinkle in reserved flour.

Cook until flour is no longer raw, about a minute. Stir in chicken broth and heavy cream and bring to a simmer, until sauce begins to thicken, about 5 minutes.

Return pork chops to skillet and cook until pork is cooked through, about 10 minutes more. Garnish with parsley.

SPINACH & ARTICHOKE STUFFED PORK CHOPS • 8 oz. cream cheese, softened to room temperature • 1/3 c. sour cream • 1/3 c. mayonnaise • 1 can artichoke hearts, drained and chopped • 1 10-oz. package frozen spinach • 2 cloves garlic, minced • 2/3 c. shredded mozzarella • 1/4 c. freshly grated Parmesan • kosher salt • pinch of crushed red pepper flakes

CRISPY PORK CHOPS • 1 1/2 c. panko bread crumbs • 1/4 c. plus 2 tbsp. extra-virgin olive oil, divided • 1/2 tsp. garlic powder • 1/4 tsp. onion powder • 1/4 tsp. dried oregano • 1/4 tsp. Dried Parsley • 1/4 tsp. smoked paprika • kosher salt • Freshly ground black pepper • 4 pork chops, about 3/4"-thick • 1 1/2 lb. fresh green beans

Preheat oven to 400° and set wire rack on baking sheet.

In a small bowl, mix panko, 1/4 cup olive oil, garlic powder, onion powder, oregano, parsley, paprika, and 2 teaspoons salt together until evenly combined. Transfer mixture to a large resealable plastic bag.

Season both sides of pork chops with salt and pepper.

Add pork chops to the bag and shake until evenly coated in seasoned panko mixture.

Place pork chops on wire rack and bake until the pork is cooked through and the bread crumbs are golden, 23 to 25 minutes.

Meanwhile, toss green beans in remaining 2 tablespoons olive oil and season with salt and pepper. Spread in an even layer on a separate baking sheet and bake until tender and beginning to color, about 15 minutes.

Serve warm with pork chops.
