The ground-breaking for the new Peter Bluesten Park took place last Saturday and dozens came out to see what the future will be about. Joining City Manager Roger Carlton, Mayor Joy Cooper and Commissioner Michele Lazarow, were several dignitaries and residents.

By Larry Blustein sfsuntimes@aol.com As dozens filed into the recreation center at Peter Bluesten Park in Hallandale Beach on Saturday for the groundbreaking of an all new facility, there was indeed excitement in the air.

From local leaders such as City Manager Roger Carlton, Mayor Joy Cooper and Commissioner Michele Lazarow – to Police Chief Sonia

Quiñones and Parks and Recreation Director Cathie Schantz – this was the perfect setting to usher in a very progressive and bright future.

But before the first dirt is truly tuned over on this impressive and state-ofthe-art facility, it may be wise to understand who Peter Bluesten was – and what he represented.

As much as a Luther Halland and so many other families helped to

shape and mold Hallandale through the decades, it was Bluesten who ushered in a new generation of residents and businesses.

His need to help the community grow and flourish through his real estate endeavors, drew positive attention to a city that has always followed the lead of Gulfstream Park and Mardi Gras Park, Page 3A

“We are looking forward to this partnership with the YMCA and to use this impressive facility,” Carrillo said.

“This is tremendous for every resident of this community as well.”

“Great memories. If people of today really wanted to know why this park is named after him, there’s a pretty good idea that what he did for Hallandale through the years made this community exactly what it is today, Moore added.”

But beyond his need to promote the community to other areas – what Bluesten saw was a coastal city that was tougher than the others. They had residents and merchants who wanted this community to grow, and if it meant making sacrifices, they would do it.

When he started a one page publication back in the early 1960’s, it was an opening for he and his family to do what they did best – support and showcase the community – while making an impact by being a part of just about everything.

The advertising base and popularity of his publication had grown – mainly because of Bluesten. The things that he did for people, businesses and organizations was never done before – and will be hard to duplicate.

“Peter was the genuine article who took care of everyone but himself,” said South Florida Sun Times President Craig Farquhar. “He used to take food and gift baskets to residents and businesses to say thank you for advertising with us and for being loyal to the community.”

Bluesten was also involved in every club and a part of every board – from Sunny Isles to Hollywood – and everywhere in between.

Part of those who were invited to Saturday’s ceremony were the daughter of Bluesten, Norma Deyo, and his grandchild Jeannie Martin Spano.

“My dad was indeed a special man that so many generations have missed out on,” Deyo said. “He had a routine every morning before he went to the office. His bagel deliveries to our advertisers and those who he knew didn’t have much, was the highlight of his day.”

THE NEW PETER BLUESTEN PARK When completed in 2019, the all new Bluesten Park will be one of the best you will find. One of the features of this project will be a new community recreation building that will house an indoor basketball court, weight rooms, meeting rooms, administrative offices, restrooms, and lockers and bathing facilities.

In addition, there will be a family recreational /community pool, tennis courts, basketball courts, multi-purpose sports field, baseball diamonds, racquet ball courts, walking/exercise trails, exercise stations, playgrounds and field house/restrooms.

Also, the partnership between the YMCA and Peter Bluesten Park is going to be special as well. Part of the ceremony on Saturday included President/CEO Sheryl Woods, who spoke about the tie with the facility.

“We are very excited about the opportunity to join such a first class City and facility that will be one of the best you will find,” Woods said. “We will have the chance to introduce so many of our programs here - for children and adults.”

Hallandale Beach was also represented by City Attorney Jennifer Merino, Project Manager Gregg Harris as well as longtime PAL Coordinator Jonathan Carrillo and his staff.

PAL is a national organization that police departments in different cities across the country implement to foster a greater connection between law enforcement, cities, and communities through recreational sports.

PAL runs throughout the year, offering two to three sports children can choose from each month, such as baseball, basketball, boxing, cheerleading, football, soccer, and track and field. The teams travel throughout South Florida for games and are always accompanied

by Hallandale Beach Police officers.

COLOR BARRIER WAS NO MATCH How ironic that the former “City Park” would have Peter Bluesten’s name on it. This is the man who broke down racial barriers in this community – right at the very site that will take on a progressive expansion.

Back in the early 1960’s, racial tension was rampant – with clashes throughout South Florida. The hate was real, but Bluesten, who grew up in New Jersey and Massachusetts, would ignore locals and became Public Enemy No. 1 – when he extended an invitation to the Braves Minor League team to play an exhibition game right there in Hallandale.

Among the minor leaguers on that team traveling from West Palm Beach, were several blacks, including the brother of the great Henry Aaron.

“Talk about crazy, Peter took so much heat for that,” said former Vice Mayor Bill Julian. “Back then, this was a community that was not one community, and a lot of those that lived on the ‘other side of the tracks’ didn’t approve of that.”

That day not only made those in Hallandale understand that if you are going to hate, you are not welcome, but it opened many eyes that if a major league organization recognized this small city, things can really start to take off.

As Gulfstream and other areas started to attract more businesses, which in turn brought in more families, it was Bluesten who helped to develop all sports – including baseball and football.

“When we were growing up, it was always Peter who

His death was very sudden and unexpected. Kevin was in my life for the past 23 years. His passing has left a huge hole in my heart.

Kevin grew up in a loving and affluent family; and had a great childhood which he often reminisced about.

Unfortunately, he lost his mother to cancer when he was only 13, and his father when he was around 17. The loss of both parents while so young was very painful for him.

He was generous to a fault, and had a charitable heart.

He was the most non-materialistic person I ever met. His ultimate goal was to be able to give away quality sneakers to the homeless, as he believed that their feet represented their car. He was dignified and carried himself with pride; yet always selfless. He truly had a heart of gold.

At some point, he had lost touch with his family in Florida. However, I am attempting to get in touch with his relatives to inform them of his untimely death. If you are a relation of Kevin Greenwald, please be kind enough to contact me at 480-580-1322.

Great day for the Hallandale Beach Police Department

By Mayor Joy Cooper Hallandale Beach - This past Monday, Police Chief Sonia Quiñones promoted and recognized her new command staff. It is also great to see many of our officer’s whom I have known for 16 years rise through the ranks. Below is the list of promotions and a brief introduction to this amazing list of Majors and Captains.

Assistant Chief Michel Michel was sworn in as a police officer for the City of Hallandale Beach in 2002. Michel excelled early within the department, joining specialized units such as the SWAT team, Honor Guard and Marine Patrol while serving as a uniformed patrol officer. Assistant Chief Michel served in Investigative Services Division in 2005 as a detective and a member of the sniper team. He supervised several units such as road patrol and traffic while additionally tasked as the Special Events Coordinator, PBA representative, and Project Manager. He became the Assistant Commander of SWAT team and a supervisory role of these specialized units. In 2009, his service was recognized by the HBP as he was named Supervisor of the Year.

Major Paul Robert was sworn in as a police officer for the City of Hallandale Beach in 1997. During his first year of service, he was quickly recognized by the Police Department as 1998 Officer of the Year and designated as a Field Training Officer. Major Robert became a School Resource Officer at Hallandale Adult Community Center while he attended Nova Law School and earned his law degree. In the Uniformed Patrol Division, he worked in the Community Involvement Unit. During this time, Robert ran the Weed and Seed grant program, grew the PAL program, and initiated the Shop with a Cop partnership with Walmart. In 2015, he was reassigned to the newly formed Administrative Operations Division. Robert is an in-house Legal and Use of Force instructor and an Adjunct Professor at Broward Colleges.

Major Ricky Buoni was sworn in as a Police Officer in 2004, where he began his service as a uniform patrol officer and remained until 2007. During this time, Buoni was also selected as a Field Training Officer, SWAT operator and served in the Investigative Services Division. He was promoted and held several supervisory positions such as uniform patrol division and the Community Involvement Unit. In addition to his supervisory roles, Buoni assumed the responsibility as the department’s range master. Throughout his tenure he has remained an active member of the Police Athletic League and currently serves as the Treasurer. He is a catalyst

for fundraising events and through his efforts the “at risk” youth in the community are afforded an opportunity to have a positive experience with law enforcement. Buoni has also been recognized as the Supervisor of the Year, awarded the Administrative Excellence Award, the lifesaving award, as well as several other accolades. He will oversee the Patrol Operations Division Captain Christopher Keating was sworn in as a police officer by the City of Hallandale Beach in October 1996. He has worked as road patrol officer, a motor officer on the traffic unit and on SWAT team, where he served as a sniper. Keating also became heavily involved with the Police Explorers program now and continued to participate with and eventually supervise the Explorers until 2016. He has served on various specialized units and outreach programs such as the Marine Patrol, Honor Guard, and Police Unity Tour. Keating has been the recipient of the Lola Salzman Award, numerous meritorious service awards, the lifesaving award and the Chief’s Special Recognition Award for Community Service. Captain Keating will oversee Bravo shift patrol, SWAT team, Traffic Unit and Marine unit.

Brian Hubbert has received numerous accolades and awards for his service. This includes receiving the department’s Medal of Valor Award twice, Unit Citation Award in 2015, Officer of the Year in 2005, and Outstanding Law Enforcement Officer of the Year by the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

Captain Hubbert will oversee Alpha shift patrol, K9, Field Force, and the Neighborhood Enforcement Team.

Captain Edward McGovern was hired by the City of Hallandale Beach as a Community Service Officer in 1999 and transitioned to a Police Officer in 2000 where he served in the road patrol division.

He served as a detective for the Vice, Intelligence and Narcotics Unit. He also worked with several agencies including the FBI, Secret Service, DEA and the U.S. Marshals. McGovern was reassigned to the Investigative Services Division where he specialized in Computer Crimes. McGovern also took on the role of Range Master and became a member of the shooting review team.

Sergeant Raul Rivera was sworn in as a police officer with the City of Hallandale Beach in 2007.

He began his career as a road patrol officer assigned to the midnight shift. He served as a field training officer, a marine patrol officer and a school resource officer. Sergeant Rivera served on the Neighborhood Enhancement Team and Multi Agency Gang Task Force. He has been serving as

a Traffic Enforcement Officer and Traffic Homicide Investigator.

Rivera served his country in the US Navy until 2007 and currently serves in the US Coast Guard where he holds the rank of Lieutenant Junior Grade. Rivera was recently deployed with the Coast Guard to Puerto Rico following Hurricane Maria to conduct humanitarian efforts. Rivera has also been involved as a baseball coach and umpire for the Police Athletic League. Sergeant, Raul Rivera was promoted to the rank of Sergeant, where he will be assigned to the Patrol Operations Division.

Sergeant Aaron Smith was sworn in as a police officer by the City of Hallandale Beach in 2003, where he served in the uniformed patrol division.

Sergeant Smith has served in the Investigative Services Division in the Property Crimes Unit and became a certified Drug Recognition Expert, which is held by less than 100 people in the state of Florida.

Based on his contributions to the traffic unit through DUI Enforcement, Smith was awarded Officer of the Year in 2009 and the MADD Officer of the Year award for three consecutive years. Sergeant Smith will be a supervisor in the Patrol Operations Division.

BUT NOT UNDERSTAND? Study by Cambridge University in England Reveals Key Answer Until recently, there was no practical way to identify dead regions of hearing cells in the ear. However, a new British-developed procedure using standard test equipment now allows for identi cation of dead hearing cell regions.

The study suggests that the presence or absence of dead regions may have serious implications in the tting of hearing aids.

This research reveals that amplifying dead cells is a mistake which will result in poorer speech understanding in noise. A new type of digitally programmable microcircuit is now available using nanoScience technology that can be programmed to bypass the dead cells. As a result, the patient’s

Morning inspiration: Choosing a better breakfast

You need to kick the quick fix and eat something more nutritious

(BPT) - The alarm beeps as you gaze out the window at the soft sunlight welcoming the day. You roll out of bed and your stomach grumbles. You stumble to the kitchen to see how you can tame the hunger pangs, ultimately reaching for a doughnut or prepackaged breakfast bar.

While this may satisfy momentarily, it won't fuel you through the morning. As your blood sugar spikes, you'll feel a short burst of energy followed by a midmorning crash that leaves you exhausted and hungry. You need to kick the quick fix and instead choose a better breakfast.

When you eat a wholesome meal to start your day, you give your body and mind the fuel it needs all morning long.

Whether at home or on-the-go, eating well during the most important meal of the day is easier than many people think.

Here are a few tips to keep you satisfied: Plenty of protein: Protein helps you feel full longer so you're less likely to

need a mid-morning pick-me-up. Plus, protein is an important building block for the body, helping support bones, muscles, cartilage, skin and blood. Try adding protein-packed foods to your breakfast, such as meat, beans, nut butters and eggs.

Necessary nutrients: According to Registered Dietitian and Nutritionist Dawn Jackson Blatner, eggs are a classic breakfast food, but there's one easy change that can supercharge any meal.

ANYTIME EGG NACHOS • 2 Eggland's Best eggs (large) • 1 large (or 2 small) sweet potatoes,

• washed and sliced into thin chips • 1 tablespoon olive oil • 1 teaspoon salt, divided • 1 teaspoon pepper, divided • 3 tablespoons milk • 1/4 cup shredded cheddar cheese • 1/2 cup black beans, drained • and rinsed • 1/4 cup finely shredded red cabbage • 2 tablespoons fresh • cilantro, chopped • 1/4 cup guacamole • 1/4 cup pico de gallo or favorite salsa • Sour cream, jalapenos or other • additions for serving if desired

Preheat oven to 400 F. Place sweet potatoes on a large sheet pan in a single layer, drizzle with olive oil and sprinkle with half the salt and pepper.

Don't overcrowd the pan. (You may need to use 2 sheet pans.)

Bake for 15-20 minutes. Flip sweet potatoes and bake for another 10 minutes or until potatoes are crispy chips.

Coat a nonstick skillet with cooking spray and bring to medium heat.

Scramble the eggs with milk and remaining salt and pepper, and pour into skillet, stirring often until cooked through.

Set aside.

Remove sweet potatoes from oven and top with half of the cheese, followed by the eggs and beans. Top with remaining cheese.

Place back in the oven until cheese is melted about 5-10 minutes.

Remove from oven and place on serving dish. Top with cabbage, cilantro, guacamole and salsa. Serve immediately.
