This election is one of the most important of this generation

By Mayor Joy Cooper Hallandale Beach - Well, there are officially fives day left until election day and it cannot come soon enough. Even before I considered becoming an elected official, I was always involved in elections.

The minute I turned 18, I worked at the polls as a poll worker. My father, as a public servant, raised us to understand the workings of the government and my mom was the judge of elections for years in our home town of Levittown, PA. Public service, community involvement and volunteerism was ingrained in all six of us as children. We were old school. Love of God, family and community. But this election cycle has been a disgrace both nationally and locally to the point of abyss. Even I am repulsed of how the system has evolved.

Back then, elections were about the issues. They were filled of good old fashion campaigning, handshakes and meet and greet events. They were about the candidates- not big corporations. Who they were, where they lived, the contributions they have given to make life better and what their goals were for the future of our community. I suggest that we need to take a breath and think about the issues here in our City. That is why I have and will continue to be involved. We have a great city! There is always room to improve and some things, we will not always agree upon.

The last survey that was taken by our City showed a 65-overall approval rating. This may sound like a weak number, but per the experts, it is strong. When you peel back the services some receive, it may well be over that number in the 80’s. Most importantly, the top issues are not surprising; security, traffic and flooding. That is what we need to address.

Therefore, we need to make sure who we re-elect and elect understand our City has our back on these issues. I mean, not just talking the talk but, have made sure we pass budgets that move our City forward. Also, who will vote on policies that also move us forward to address traffic and security. It should be about team work and good government. Not power and money.

Those of our readers that know me and have followed the City issues know what I am talking about.

As Hallandale Beach continues to make the headline, the residents need to know what is real when they vote Some occasional readers may not. I want to be clear, you cannot say you are for improvements and then not pay for them. That is hypocritical. Obviously, we all cannot agree 100 percent but a vote NO on the budget is like throwing the baby out with the bath water.

This past budget is a great example. It passed with Vice Mayor Julian, Commissioner Sanders and I voting yes. The budget included funding to address the Southwest area flooding project that will cost millions of dollars even with the federal funds. It included a full replacement of our citywide camera systems and first responder’s radio systems. You cannot say you want to address traffic and continue to vote against a road the will reduce traffic on by Hallandale Beach Boulevard by 25%. Frankly, I am tired of this and you should be too!!

I was not happy that our City was in the news again over the funding of smear campaign on both sides but they finally covered the money that is being spent by Gulfstream to smear Bill Julian and Alex Lewy. Gulfstream does not want a road, but they want their tax break back. The news was not focused on this, but you should be! Gulfstream is not just spending $75,000, they have funneled money into two other political committees.

Gulfstream is also supporting a candidate that changed her driver’s license a few months before election to run in our city. We have a rule that you must have lived here for a year. There is good reason for this. Elected officials should be tied to the community. They should be involved. It is my understanding that a complaint has been filed with the state to challenge her residency.

It goes back to my original premise. No matter what the smears campaign are doing this election, we need get back to the basics. Who are the candidates? Where are they from? What have they done?

What will they do? From my vantage point, the record stands on its own merits.

This is not just about security traffic and floodingwe have many other projects and programs that make our city great! We need to address the future of our road systems, beach renourishment, finish and maintain our park systems, continue to improve our schools through partnership that enhance education, continue to address the needs of our most vulnerable and help improve our economy.

This past week, the Broward County Alliance produced its annual source guide. In it, there is a list of cities and the demographic of each city and the cost of all services. The cost is inclusive of not just property taxes, but everything water sewer, trash etc. The figures in the 31 cities range from 19% to 23% depending on the City. This year, we finally reached the 19% range.

So, do not be pulled into the negativity. Our city has and continues to move in the right direction. This election is about two sides. One side wants to continue to move the City forward and the other is focused on control and dismantling years of success. I am concerned that they have gone down the path of negativity without any regard for the overall wellbeing of our City. The big company’s and press are not concerned about our City.

Our City’s future depends on every vote. Early voting is underway at our community/cultural center from 7 am to 7 pm everyday up to Sunday. On Tuesday, you can vote at your precinct from 7 am to 7 pm.

Please remember, that we are still in Hurricane Season for just over 3 more weeks, so please make sure to be prepared. Have a Happy Hallandale Beach weekend!

Last week, as Walker and Alicia boyfriend, James Petit, stood in line at the Hallandale Beach Cultural Center to take advantage of the early voting, they spoke out about what this city has been like. Both have attended meetings and watched the weekly commission gathering on local cable access.

“We have sat there in amazement some weeks while commissioners walk out during votes, interrupt others and try and make this anything but an organized gathering to get city business accomplished,” Walker said. “Then, you go home and see that the in-fighting spills over to the public. That to me is the worst, and as a taxpayer, I want this stopped.”

Dirty laundry being aired in public on TV and in local newspapers have proven to do nothing more than continue to tear away at the fibers of a city that boasts two of Broward County’s largest taxpayers in Gulfstream Park and Mardi Gras Racing & Casino.

The perception of Hallandale Beach - back in the day - when it was known purely as a retirement mecca - has all but disappeared. More and more affluential people have moved here and are creating more flow to the economy. That adds to the growth, demand for more residences and business - and then developers, which have been known to split city governments.

Still a destination because of the amenities the city has, Hallandale Beach is being packed with year round residents, and unlike the past when the “snowbirds” would dictate the landscape of the community, there are now more year-round families who have helped to change the infrastructure.

“When we first moved here, there were not a lot of people who stayed here year-round,” Petit said. “We have an entire neighborhood of families

Petit feels: “that it’s hard to trust people with your tax dollars and what they are doing with your city when they cannot police themselves.”

With the polls open

and candidates dodging barbs and investigations, the residents continue to head out to vote for two seats that could change the landscape of this “divided” leadership with known “agendas.”

“It seems to me that every election in Hallandale Beach, there is some drama,” Walker explained. “You remember before the last election, one of the commissioners was accused of doing something wrong at one of the condos. After the elec-

tion, you never heard anything about it. If you cannot be transparent and come clean about your motives, I will not vote for you.”

Two Crucial Races With Mayor Joy Cooper running opposed - the focus in this year’s election is square on Seats 3 and 4.

Seat 3 Vice Mayor Bill Julian, a longtime figure on the commission and in the city, has been one of the

figures being attacked before the election.

Newspapers, TV and internet have highlighted negatives. His opponent is a political newcomer, Anabelle Taub, who had never held office before.

Seat 2 With incumbent Michele Lazarow serving her first four years in office, this is a seat that has one-time commissioner Alex Lewy and community activist Ann Henigson, using experience to get the votes.

Hollywood Celebrates its Veterans and Active Duty Service Members with a Free Barbecue on Veterans Day! Veterans From Page 1A Forces. Each year, Mayor Peter Bober works the grill and members of the Hollywood City Commission join with volunteers to serve a free barbecue lunch to local veterans, service members and their families. All Hollywood military personnel, veterans and their families are invited to this special event to celebrate their service.

Traditional barbecue fare is on the menu with barbecue chicken, hamburgers, baked beans, coleslaw, corn on the cob, fruit salad, cookies and

brownies, and an assortment of beverages. Jaxson’s Ice Cream will once again provide complimentary scoops of its world famous ice cream.

Mayor Bober first put forth plans for a barbecue to honor veterans in 2011. Later that year, Hollywood hosted the first Veterans Barbecue as part of Veterans Day Weekend celebrations. “I wanted to do something to make veterans and military personnel in our City feel truly special on the Veterans Day holiday,” says Mayor Bober. “I’d always see lines of people waiting to get into local parks on Veterans Day and and that’s when I decided it’s not that there are too many barbecues on Veterans Day, it’s that there aren’t enough barbecues that specifically celebrate veterans. We’ve changed

that in Hollywood and each year the event gets bigger and better.”

Besides great food and camaraderie, the City of Hollywood Veterans Barbecue will feature music by DiXoN, a banner plane fly-over displaying a message of thanks to Veterans and a wall of honor.

This year’s barbecue is made possible by support from Mayor Peter Bober, Fred Hunter Memorial Services and Jaxson’s Ice Cream Parlour.

Event capacity is 500 people. Please present military ID for barbecue and free park entrance.

The great Florida Cuban Sandwich showdown It comes down to Miami vs. Tampa and one different ingredient TAMPA

MIAMI

No matter where you live in Florida, everyone seems to have their own version of the classic Cuban Sandwich.

The battle between Miami and Tampa has been long-standing - with those from Florida’s west coast wanting to add salami to the already tasty sandwich.

Enjoy!

Cuban Sandwich - Tampa • 3.5 lbs pork butt (Boston butt) • 10 cloves garlic, chopped • 1 large onion, quartered • ½ cup orange juice • ½ cup lime juice • 1 tsp. each Mexican oregano, salt • ½ tsp. each black pepper, cumin • ½ tsp black pepper • ½ pound sliced deli ham • ½ pound sliced Genoa salami • ½ pound Swiss cheese • mustard • dill pickles • Sub Rolls • butter, softened Place garlic, onions, orange juice, lime juice,

oregano, cumin, salt and pepper in a slow cooker; stir to combine.

Place pork on top of mixture, cover and turn heat on low. Cook 6-8 hours.

Once pork has finished cooking, place on a cutting board and shred into large chunks.

Preheat oven to 400 degrees F. Open sub rolls and spread mustard on each side. Layer the bottom of the roll with ham and salami and pickle slices. Next, pile pulled pork on top of the pickles Place Swiss cheese slices on top of pork. Close the sub roll and lightly butter both the top and bottom.

Wrap sandwich in foil and place in oven for 5-10 minutes, allowing the cheese to melt and roll to toast a bit.

Miami Cuban Sandwich • 1 1⁄4 lbs boneless pork roast • 3 tablespoons garlic, minced • 3 tablespoons parsley, minced • 1 tablespoon paprika (preferably hot) • 2 teaspoons ground cumin • 1 teaspoon ground black pepper • 1 teaspoon salt • 2 tablespoons lime juice • 2 tablespoons light corn syrup • 2 tablespoons olive oil

6 cuban rolls (Authentic Cuban Rolls recipe) 1⁄3 lb smoked ham, thinly sliced 3⁄4 lb swiss cheese, thinly sliced 1 1⁄2 large dill pickles, sliced 1⁄4 cup butter, melted

ROASTING THE PORK: Mix all of the marinade ingredients together (all of the ingredients except the pork), and rub this mixture over all surfaces of the pork. Cover well, and refrigerate for 6 to 24 hours.

Place the pork in a roasting pan or ovenproof dish, and roast it in a preheated 425°F oven for 30 to 40 minutes, basting occasionally with the pan juices, until cooked through. Remove the pork from the oven, and cool it completely before slicing thinly.

ASSEMBLING THE SANDWICH: Slice the Cuban loaves in half horizontally. Brush the cut surfaces of the rolls with olive oil or melted butter. Layer the sandwiches as follows: Swiss cheese, sliced pickle, ham, sliced roast pork, then additional cheese.

Now comes the somewhat challenging part. You want to grill these sandwiches, top and bottom, while at the same time flattening them slightly. This helps meld all of the filling ingredients. Heat two large skillets, or a griddle, to medium, about 325°F Lightly grease the griddle and/or skillets. Brush the bottoms of the sandwiches lightly with olive oil or melted butter.

Place them in the greased pan(s). Brush the tops with oil or butter. Top them with a piece of parchment paper or foil, then a flat sheet pan, or other flat, non-meltable object—the point is to provide a flat surface for a weight. Place something heavy atop the pan—a teakettle filled with water makes a good weight, as does a clean brick wrapped in aluminum foil.

Grill the sandwiches for 5 to 7 minutes over medium heat, checking often to make sure the bottoms aren't burning. Adjust the heat downward if the bottoms are becoming brown after only a couple of minutes. Turn the sandwiches over and grill for several more minutes, until they're slightly crisp on both sides, and the cheese is melting.

However, while millions will visit these majestic spots each year, few realize a major challenge faces national parks across the country waste. The National Park Service manages more than 100 million pounds of waste nationally, much of which is generated by serving more than 300 million park visitors per year that's enough to fill the Statue of Liberty more than 1,800 times.

While waste is a major issue in the parks, visitors can make a difference.

Subaru of America, experts in zero-landfill sustainability, is sharing its knowledge of these practices with the National Parks

to help keep the parks beautiful for the next century. As part of that effort, the automaker, alongside National Parks Conservation Association (NPCA), has developed a set of tips that visitors can adopt to help reduce some of the biggest contributors to landfills from national parks, including paper, plastics and glass: Opt for online: While paper maps can be a park staple, there are smartphone apps that provide the same information and more. Even without cell service, some national park apps will give helpful information about where you can spot wildlife, catch a beautiful sunset, or even find a refillable water station.

Mug for the parks: Bring a reusable coffee mug from home or buy one from the souvenir shop to help reduce the 58 billion paper cups that are sent to America's landfills every year.

BYOB (Bring Your Own Bottle): Americans

throw away 2.5 million plastic bottles every hour. Keep a refillable water bottle on hand or buy one at gift shop, while taking advantage of convenient refilling stations around the park.

Ditch the Plastic Bag: Help reduce waste by not using a plastic bag for your souvenirs or groceries that you bring into the parks. Instead, bring your own reusable bag or tote for your items to help eliminate plastic bag waste.

Take Out What You Bring in: Think about what you bring in.

Check to see if it can be recycled or composted in the park you are visiting. If it cannot, try to take it home. It is often far easier to recycle near your home than in rural park areas.

Want a memory boost? Try a hearing test

(BPT) - Intrigued by all the brain-training products out there to keep your mind sharp and spirits young? You may want to consider something else: A hearing test.

That's right. Mounting

evidence links untreated hearing loss to impaired memory and diminished cognitive function. What that means is, if you keep brushing off that suspected hearing loss of yours, your cognition

may pay.

Researchers have found that when people with unaddressed hearing loss strain to hear, they tend to do more poorly on memory tests.

They may figure out what

is being said, but because so much effort goes into just hearing it, their ability to remember what they heard often suffers.

Experts believe this has to do with what they call "cognitive load." That is, in order to compensate for the hearing loss and make out the words, people with untreated hearing loss may draw on cognitive resources they'd normally use to remember what they'veheard. Experts say that untreated hearing loss may even interfere with the person's ability to accurately process and make sense of what was said or heard. fact, research In shows that people with poorer hearing have less gray matter in the auditory cortex, a region of

the brain needed to support speech comprehension.

Other research shows a link between hearing loss and dementia. One Johns Hopkins study found that seniors with hearing loss are significantly more likely to develop dementia over time than those who retain their hearing. Another found that hearing loss is associated with accelerated cognitive decline in older adults. And a third revealed a link between hearing loss and accelerated brain tissue loss.

Some experts believe that interventions, like professionally fitted hearing aids, could potentially help.

The bottom line is we actually "hear" with our brain, not with our ears.

So if you think you

may have hearing loss, do something about it.

A great time at the Annual Halloween Festival

It’s all about fun at the annual Hallandale Beach Parks & Recreation Department Halloween Festival at Peter Bluesten Park. Hundreds of children and parents flooded the park for games, activities, music, a haunted house and plenty of candy. An annual highlight of the event is the costume contest, which was expanded this year to include more winners in each category. Hallandale Beach Mayor and City Commissioners paid respects to American veterans on Tuesday, honoring the brave men and women who devoted so much, to ensure so many could enjoy freedom. Each veteran was presented with a proclamation naming Nov. 11 as Veterans Day in the City of Hallandale Beach. Hallandale Beach will honor all veterans on Friday, Nov. 11, with ceremonies at Hallandale Beach Cemetery at 9:30 a.m., a reception at 10 a.m. at the Cultural Community Center and additional ceremonies at 10:30 a.m., also in the Cultural Center. The events are free.
