With a renovation of the entire store, customers will notice the new flooring and ceilings, bright paint and takeout area, with deli cases of grab and go items, as well as prepared foods that have been popular through the decades.

These days, Iris and her son, Harvey continue to elevate this business that has earned a reputation of serving kosher style foods that brings customers back for more.

“It was time to make some changes and give our customers something fresh and new,” Iris pointed out.

“We have been such a huge part of this community for 45 years, and that is why it was important to upgrade.”

What Sage Bagel & Deli has built their reputation on through the years is serving quality food and a bagel that you just cannot find anywhere else. It was the many New York transplants who first started to pack the restaurant during the season to experience what they have back home.

The experience of walking into a deli and inhaling the aromas of meats, fish, soups, baked goods and roasted chickens, is what many fondly remember.

PREPARED FOODS HAVE ALWAYS BEEN GREAT “In the beginning, it was about educating those people who grew up here about what a traditional deli should be all about,” Harvey explained. “Seeing display cases filled with deli meats, such as corned beef, turkey breast, brisket, pastrami, beef tongue, salami and kosher style fish such as poached salmon, lox/nova, smoked whitefish, sable, sturgeon and herring was something that many down here never had the opportunity to see.”

In addition to the deli meats and fish, there are several varieties of Italian and Mediterranean dishes that generations of customers planned their week around picking out an assortment of delights, such as meatballs and spaghetti, eggplant parmigiana, stuffed cabbage, rotisserie chicken and turkey, potato kugel, kasha and potato latkes.

THE FOOD IS OUTSTANDING By now Sage Bagel and Appetizer Shop has earned a solid reputation for the food. From early morning breakfast, to overstuffed sandwiches for lunch, no one leaves disappointed.

Sage’s breakfast menu is extensive. There are 10 different kinds of omelets and eggs any style, with your choice of yummy sides such as bacon, sausage and corned beef hash. MIND-BOGGLING TRAFFIC It Is Something Our Communities Have Learned To Live With This Time of Year

By Larry Blustein sfsuntimes@aol.com With Thanksgiving coming up next week, you can already see the traffic starting to build with more and more visitors beginning to take their places in the sun.

“The Season” has officially arrived - as “snowbirds” from around

the world - head to this region of the country to set up life for the next five plus months.

At a time when many of the communities have continued to grow, adding new residences and many new businesses, the traffic continues to be a problem that is not what locals are

used to.

As bad as this pressing issue may seem, we are often reminded that it is all about the economy, and those extra 10-15 minutes shouldn’t really be a bother. But it is for many who travel the roads daily.

“It’s give and take for our economy,” said Hol-

lywood business owner Colleen Smart. “Traffic is traffic - and while all of us get angry with waiting longer to get to our destinations - you have to believe that it’s better all the way around.”

With many projects either started or getting ready to start, much of the anger for the locals is the timing of many construction starts. Instead of planning out when many of the road closures and detours would take place, it seems that cities are on their own schedule and not ours.

That compounds their already traffic woes during the months ahead.

What the season does for the economy is tremendous. There is no way that many of our coastal communities would look like they do without the boost that is

given from November until late March.

For as long as anyone can remember, area merchants have banked on these months. It is something that has been dictated by those who are part-time residents, who will shop, dine and spend entertainment dollars.

“As someone who has been in this area all of my life, I have watched how many of these communities have become destinations,” Anthony Murrillo pointed out. “I grew up in Aventura, moved to Hallandale Beach and now enjoy my Hollywood neighborhood. Being in the food service business, there is no doubt what the season does for all of us. I can deal with the crazy traffic.”

The best way to deal

with traffic is to take different routes. Streets that people from outside the area wouldn’t know about. Also, avoid using U.S. 1 (Biscayne Blvd.) or A1A unless you have to.

“The traffic is a nightmare, and I am sure the cities are doing what they can to alleviate the situation,” Murrillo explained. “Living in a tourist destination has its pluses and minuses.

Kiwanis Club of Hallandale Beach Hosts A 50’s Style Sock Hop

By Steve Cummings The Kiwanis Club of Hallandale Beach hosted a fifties style sock hop last Saturday evening that packed the Hallandale Beach Cultural Center with ladies sporting poodle skirts and saddle shoes while the men arrived with greased back hair wearing white Tee shirts, black leather jackets and blue jeans with rolled up cuffs.

The proceeds from the event benefitted Project Alive which seeks to find a cure for a rare genetic disease named Hunter Syndrome. This malicious disorder affects less than 500 boys in the United States caused by a missing enzyme that breaks down cellular waste. Victims lose their ability to walk, talk and eat that often lead toward premature death in their teens.

Kiwanian Katy Lizana is impassioned about finding a cure as her three-year-old son has a playmate that suffers from Hunters Syndrome.

In my twenty-five years performing community service with the Kiwanis Club of Hallandale Beach, I have never met an individual with the indefatigable energy as Lizana and the skill organizing fundraising events with limited assistance from others.

Katy exemplifies superior leadership and directs volunteers with calmness and precision as her gregarious manner is infectious.

The entire décor of the room reflected an era of tranquility and happier times in our country where teens congregated at malt shops eating burgers and drinking milk shakes and egg creams dancing to music that is still popular in modern times.

Jaxson’s Ice Cream in Dania Beach supplied ice cream and patrons were treated to root beer floats and feasted on Ziti provided by Carini’s Restaurant in Hallandale Beach and hot dogs with fixings that included a choice of sauerkraut, onions, chili or cheese.

Many thanks to local chiropractor Dr. Joseph A. Amunategui II who secured the Boogie Brothers Band playing all the memorable hits from an era of unforgettable love songs. People danced to their music for three continuous hours.

Lizana enhanced the festivities hiring pin up girls dressed in fifties garb and a photographer that took your picture behind a setting reflecting the time period.

Additional funds were raised with a fifty fifty raffle and an auction that featured original photos of crooners such as Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin and a chance to win a trip to Mexico.

The success of this evening was a result of the collaborative efforts of all our Kiwanis members and the dedication

of Katy Lizana.

We were honored that attendees included Hallandale Beach Police Chief Sonia Quinones who has been a constant fixture at community events as well as City Commissioner Anabelle Lima-Taub.

Hallandale Beach has voted in a new Mayor in Joy Adams and she cordially addressed the crowd with an enthusiastic reception as did our new City Commissioner Sabrina Javellana(pronounced Ha-vell-yahna) who is the youngest commissioner in our city’s history recently turning 21 years old .

Sabrina was a Past President of the Hallandale High School Key Club that I supervise with faculty advisor Sylvia Childs and Sabrina won every award possible for outstanding leadership. She is a very mature lady with a great deal of passion for her community and I am sure she will serve with

Traditional Thanksgiving Meal • Small handful of rosemary sprigs • 1 small handful sage leaves • 1 head garlic, halved crosswise • 1/2 c. melted butter • 2 c. chicken broth

By this time next Thursday, you will have your Thanksgiving meal in the oven - or at least getting things ready for this festive holiday.

From the traditional turkey to stuffing, potatoes, vegetables and dessert, we will all be enjoying some of the best foods.

Today - with a week left to prepare - we give you some ideas that may end up part of this Thanksgiving.

Enjoy and have a happy and safe holiday.

ROASTED TURKEY • 1 12-14 lb. whole turkey, neck and • giblets removed • Kosher salt • Freshly ground black pepper • 1 onion, cut into wedges • 1 bunch thyme

Position rack to the lower third of your oven and preheat oven to 450°. Pat turkey dry with paper towels and season the cavity generously with salt and pepper. Stuff the cavity with onion, thyme, rosemary, sage and garlic.

Tie the legs together with kitchen twine and tuck the wing tips under the body.

Brush butter all over turkey then season generously with salt and pepper. Place turkey breast side up on a roasting rack inside of a large pan. Pour chicken broth into the pan. Transfer to oven and immediately reduce oven heat to 350°.

Baste every 30 to 45 minutes with the juices on the bottom of the pan, and roast for 3 to 4 hours, or until the juices run clear when you cut between the leg and thigh.

(The meat temperature should be 165°).

Cover cooked turkey with aluminum foil and let rest for 20 minutes before carving.

MASHED POTATOES • 3 lb. potatoes (about 4 large, • combo of Russets and Yukon Golds) • Kosher salt • 1 stick butter, plus 2 tablespoons for garnish • 1/2 c. milk • 1/2 c. sour cream • Freshly ground black pepper

In a large pot, cover potatoes with water and add a generous pinch of salt. Bring to a boil and cook until totally soft, 16 to 18 minutes. Drain and return potatoes to pot.

Use a potato masher to mash potatoes until smooth.

Meanwhile, in a small saucepan, melt butter and milk until warm.

Pour over warm milk-butter mixture and stir until com-

pletely combined and creamy. Add sour cream and stir until everything is combined. Season mashed potatoes generously with salt and pepper.

Transfer potatoes to a serving bowl and top with remaining two tablespoons butter. Season with more pepper before serving.

HOLIDAY STUFFING • 2 baguettes, country, or sourdough • bread (1 pound) • 8 tbsp. butter, plus more for baking dish • 1 large onion, diced (about 2 1/4 cups) • 4 stalks celery, thinly sliced • 2 cloves garlic, minced • 1/2 c. freshly chopped parsley • 1 tbsp. freshly chopped sage, minced • 1 tbsp. fresh thyme leaves, minced • 1/2 tbsp. freshly chopped rosemary • Kosher salt • Freshly ground black pepper • 4 c. low-sodium chicken broth • 2 large eggs, beaten

The day before: Tear or slice bread into 1/4" cubes and leave out overnight to dry out. (Alternately, place bread on baking sheets and bake at 200º for 20 minutes.)

When you're ready to make the stuffing: Preheat oven to 350º and butter a large baking dish. In a large skillet over medium heat, melt butter. Add onion and celery and cook until soft and fragrant, 8 minutes. Stir in garlic, parsley, sage, thyme, and rosemary and cook until fragrant, 1 minute more. Season with salt and pepper.

Place bread in a large bowl and add skillet mixture.

Toss to combine. In a medium bowl, whisk together chicken broth and beaten eggs and pour over bread mixture. Season generously with salt and pepper and toss until completely coated.

Transfer mixture to prepared baking dish and cover with foil. Bake until cooked through, 45 minutes, then remove foil and cook until bread is golden, 15-20 minutes.
