Black Friday is upon us – and what that means is, well, what does that mean? It used to hold significance to get up at 4 a.m. and join the others who head to the malls and get those crazy deals – two hours before the rest of the country wakes up from a filling Thanksgiving meal.

But as we all have found out, corporate American has once again stolen the show – and they’ve taken those holiday memories and put them on the shelf

with the rest of the leftovers.

There is no longer a Black Friday. The stores and media can label it as such, but in reality, the shopping has started way before the official day arrives. That’s right, when you get to the mall this Friday to get the TV that was at a ridiculous price, your neighbor got the same one the night before.

There is so much to be thankful for this year

By Mayor Joy Cooper Hallandale Beach - As the holiday season has finally arrived, it is time to reflect on what we have to be thankful for.

Many of us are blessed in so many ways. More importantly, when we do think of these blessings, we all must stop to do our best to help those in need. Poverty is not something that you necessarily see, but we do have many residents that live pay check to pay check. Hallandale Beach residents and business partners always amaze me with their altruism and stepping up to the plate to address those who are less fortunate.

This past week, Davin Joseph’s Dream Team partnered with the Hallandale Beach Kiwanis Key Club to distribute turkeys at our own Hallandale High School. Davin is a local celebrity NFL player that was raised here in Hallandale Beach. He is always giving back. Not only does he give back financially, but he is giving back by helping to teach students, the importance of helping others.

Rodriguez Charities Step Up Once Again

This past Monday, Rodriguez Charities distributed 1,000 turkeys to local needy residents - which was held at the Cheetah Nightclub. Joe Rodriguez has developed his charity to make sure families have food for Thanksgiving and other holidays.

The Marlins Step Up To The Plate This past Tuesday, the Miami Marlins partnered with the Hallandale Food Pantry to distribute not just turkeys, but a balanced meal to over 200 hundred Hallandale Beach residents. It is great to see our own Vice Mayor Julian continuing his service to our residents. He always puts others first - and has always been there to help our hometown hero Paul Snow!

The Hallandale Food Pantry provides food to over 200 families on a weekly basis.

Annual Thanksgiving Feast Has A ‘New’ Home The annual Thanksgiving Feast at our very own Hepburn Center will take place Thanksgiving morning. Many volunteers gather and serve our seniors and those that would otherwise be shut in without family members to cel-

ebrate. A complete dinner is served with a tremendous time had by all.

I am especially proud that my husband (Harry) helps to organize the kitchen along with the Hepburn Center staff. This will be the first dinner served at our brand new center, we are all excited about it. I highly recommend that if you have not been to the center, please stop in.

OB Johnson Park and The Hepburn Center Are Amazing The new OB Johnson Park and the Hepburn Center are amazing facilities.

I was surprised to hear from many people that have not visited the park yet. This is our City park and it is open to all residents. If you want to work out at a gym, there is a free facility right in your backyard. The old center has been raised and we are currently completing this park. When finished, there will be multi-purpose playing fields, basketball courts and a walking path; if you do not have access to computers, there is a state-of-the-art computer lab. There are also many programs offered at the center, located at Pembroke Road and NW 8th Avenue.

Our Parks Are Taking Shape The second phase of our parks construction is well underway. Peter Bluesten Park has been planned and is under design and permitting. This is a facility that will continue to be a hub for activity - year round.

The Golden Isles Park and Tennis Center is moving into planning. This park has not had a masterplan yet, so we will be holding a community meeting to discuss this exciting makeover.

On Tuesday November 29th at 6 pm, at our community cultural center, we will be holding a meeting to discuss the amenities and the layout.

As we begin getting ready for Christmas and Hanukkah please remember to shop local! We have many stores right here in Hallandale Beach to find that perfect gift!

Report Finds Hallandale Beach Among Most Affordable in Broward County

Hallandale Beach is among the most afford-

able incorporated communities in Broward

County, according to a study of 2016 municipal millage rates published in the Greater Fort Lauderdale Alliance/Broward County Economic Source Book. Hallandale Beach’s Fiscal Year 2016 millage rate was 5.1918, 12th among the 31 incorporated governments in the county.

Broward County property tax bills also include assessments by outside taxing authorities that affect your overall tax bill.

Tax bills sent to Hallandale Beach property owners include assessments imposed by County, Broward Broward Schools, Children’s Services, South Broward Hospital District, Florida Inland Navigational District and South Florida Water Management District.

Municipalities have no control over taxes assessed by these outside sources.

“We are very proud of

our record of maintaining a low tax rate while increasing the level of service to our residents,” said Mayor Joy Cooper after seeing the Economic Source Book.

The Greater Fort Lauderdale Alliance /Broward County Economic Source Book provides a breakdown of each community, including statistical data, address, type of government, key officials, business climate,

Indeed, the art of the deal has taken on new forms of getting us to part with our money by enticing all of us with better deals if you come on Thanksgiving eve, morning and during the day.

The world of supply and demand has indeed hit this pre-holiday shopping period, and has now found out that people tend to get bored on Thanksgiving Thursday.

While not everyone loves to watch parades and football, and sit around and tell stories as the turkeys and hams are cooking away, corporate America felt they would help you spend those down times during the holiday and created a four-day shopping period that helps them usher in a month-long barrage of commercials and more deals.

Cliff Morris is a Hallandale Beach business owner who has watched all of this unfold. His re-

tail business is in a strip shopping center on the east side of the City, and while a few stores have begun to open on Thanksgiving Day, he still believes that there is no deal good enough to take a family day away.

“To me, I grew up in New York, and when we were kids, it was the parade followed by lunch, family coming together and finally the Thanksgiving meal,” he explained. “Outside of the Walmarts and Targets and malls, it’s really not important that the smaller stores stay open.

But that is an option that individuals have to decide for themselves.”

• In 1998, Dr Angelo E. Gousse was the very first surgeon to have implanted the Interstim device in patients with overactive bladder in South Florida. He has published numerous peer-reviewed articles on Interstim in respected medical journals.

What Is Overactive Bladder?

Overactive bladder (OAB), also known as overactive bladder syndrome, is a condition where there is a frequent feeling of needing to void to a degree that it negatively affects a person's quality of life.

The frequent need to urinate may occur during the day, at night, or both. Frequent urination at night is called nocturia. When there is loss of bladder control associated with a strong and compelling urge to urinate it is known as urge incontinence OAB wet. Other patients only have urinary urgency and frequency but do not experience leakage (OAB dry). More than 40% of patients with overactive bladder have incontinence. The condition is chronic. Therefore, most patients have this problem for the remaining of their life.

The uniqueness of Interstim is that it offers a trial period before the device is implanted.

The trial assessment takes 3 to 7 days and lets you try neurostimulation to see if it is right for you without making a long-term commitment.

Dr Gousse will help you determine whether neurostimulation is right for you. The treatment is designed to minimize the symptoms of overactive bladder.

How Does It Work?

The exact mechanism by which Interstim works is not known. The first stage of the procedure (called peripheral sacral nerve evaluation (PNE) may be performed in the office or the operating room, depending on the case. Dr Gousse will numb a small skin area and insert a thin, flexible wire around your sacral nerves (near your tailbone).

During the PNE, you will be awake in order the guide proper placement. You will be asked where you feel the nerve stimulation in your body. Dr Gousse

will also note some muscle contractions in your body to guide proper placement. Typically, you will be in the prone position (lying on your stomach). This position allows access to the tail bone and anal area.

Once proper placement is confirmed, the electrical wire is taped to your skin and connected to a small external stimulator (resembling a large beeper) which you’ll wear on your waistband.

The external stimulator sends mild electrical pulses through the wire to a sacral nerve.

Electrical shock or severe nerve damage associated with the therapy has virtually never been reported.

The stimulation may help improve your bladder function or get it working the way it’s supposed to.

During the trial assessment, you can continue many of your daily activities with caution.

You can usually continue to work throughout your trial assessment if your job doesn’t require strenuous movement.

You’ll be asked to document your urinary symptoms which led to the implant.

Dr Gousse or nurse will give you information about operating the test stimulator. He or she will also tell you about any precautions or activity restrictions related to the trial assessment.

Long-term sacral nerve stimulation therapy involves placement of an implantable pulse generator-battery (the size of a stop watch) under the fatty tissues of the upper buttock area. Typically this step (step 2, battery implant), done only after the trial test (step 1) is shown to be successful, is performed in the operating room under local or general anesthesia. The half life of the battery varies according to usage and type and may last 3 to 8 years. Once the entire system is in place, there are no visible wires or batteries outside of the body. One can regain a normal life without limitations. A few patients may experience discomfort at the battery implant site.

Coughing? Bring a Healthy Dose of Sick-Etiquette to Work

When the common cold hits, sharing is not really caring at all

(BPT) - Being considerate of others when you're sick is one of the first steps to good sick etiquette.

For example, you may think you're going to score points for showing up at work despite feeling under the weather.

However, if you were to run this by an etiquette expert like Diane Gottsman, she would probably tell you the reverse is true.

"A recent survey found that half of Americans feel anxious about getting sick when others cough around them," Gottsman says. "So when you cough, your co-workers are likely going to be thinking of themselves and may not sympathize with you."

That's why Gottsman says the best thing you can do is steer clear of the office. If working remotely isn't an option, it is best to take a sick day.

"When you're sick, it's so important to take precautions to keep your germs from infecting others, which should always include staying home from work or other activities until symptoms have subsided," says Gotts-

man. "I understand that sometimes life seems too busy to get sick or a workplace may not offer enough paid time off. So staying home and putting work on the back burner until you're well is not an option for everyone. Still, productivity will decline when you are sick and you may prolong your illness by overexerting yourself."

With that, Gottsman says the name of the game is keeping those germs to yourself. Don't be afraid to be demonstrative about that so you send a clear signal that you care and you don't want to infect anyone - it will put your friends and colleagues at ease. Here are Gottsman's sick etiquette tips: Telecommute: If it is physically possible for you to complete a day's work at home, that is probably the second most ideal solution to taking a sick day. If that's not a typical arrangement at your place of employment, though, frame it as being beneficial to your boss and your fellow employees.

For example: "I understand we have this im-

portant deadline coming up, which is why I would prefer not to spread this bug to others. What if I worked on the project from my home office today instead of coming in? If you sent me the call-in information, I could still join the conference call later. Of course, if you need anything at all, I'm just a phone call or email away."

Touch no one: If a friend moves in for a hug or a handshake, kindly warn them that you are recovering from a cold and would prefer to "play it safe" before extending your hand or leaning in for a hug.

Keep a sickness arsenal: Keep your desk well stocked to help you treat your symptoms and keep common areas germfree. For your kit, consider items like tissues, disinfecting wipes and hand sanitizer, as well as relief for sick symptoms, like pain relievers and a cough syrup like Robitussin.

Avoid shared surfaces: Cold viruses can survive several hours on transferring surfaces, easily to your colleagues.

Germs can be hard to contain and avoid, but you can do your part by wiping down shared areas like a table or chair with a disinfecting wipe when you are finished using them.

Cover your mouth wisely: Coughs and sneezes give germs and viruses a nice little vehicle to get around and infect others nearby. When you must cough or sneeze, use a tissue or cough into your arm or elbow - never your hand, because the hands help spread the germs

around. When using a tissue, promptly dispose of it and sanitize your hands.

Minimize coughing: When people hear someone cough in a crowded space, 26 percent feel annoyed, and 46 percent feel anxious about getting sick themselves, according to a recent online survey conducted by the Harris Poll. Communication, not silence, is golden for men battling prostate cancer While overall prostate cancer numbers have declined, a new study from Northwestern University found an increasing number of newly diagnosed cases of prostate cancer

(BPT) - For the nearly 3 million American men fighting prostate cancer, and the thousands more yet to be diagnosed, silence is not golden. Men who speak up about their disease - to their doctors, loved ones and community - can get the help they need, when they need it, and ensure their treatment plan is tailored to their needs. What's more, they could use their voice to inspire others to be more vocal, especially about symptoms that may indicate the disease may be getting worse.

While overall prostate cancer numbers have declined, a new study from Northwestern University found an increasing number of newly diagnosed cases of prostate cancer are metastatic - meaning the cancer has spread beyond the prostate to other parts of the body.

Advanced stage cancers are more difficult to treat, and fewer patients will recover or survive when their disease has progressed. Unfortunately, men with advanced disease often hesitate to

speak up about the discomfort they experience.

But according to Dr. William Oh, chief of the division of hematology and medical oncology at The Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York, speaking up about these warning signs is a key way men can advocate for themselves.

"During treatment, it's important for men to speak up and share with their doctors any changes in their bodies and symptoms, even if they don't think the changes are related to their prostate cancer," Oh says. "As physicians, we're working to create an environment where men feel comfortable talking about symptoms instead of feeling shame or weakness."

Men living with advanced prostate cancer may remain silent about symptoms, such as fatigue and difficulty with daily tasks, for different reasons. Some don't want to further burden loved ones, whereas others believe the symptoms aren't part of their illness or that they can "tough things out." An in-

ternational survey conducted by the International Prostate Cancer Coalition found that while 99 percent of advanced prostate cancer patients experienced at least one symptom, 68 percent admitted they sometimes ignored symptoms.

"If we really want to help patients, we have to encourage them to come out and tell us exactly what's bothering them," Oh says. "Symptoms can alert physicians that a patient's cancer has progressed and they need to re-evaluate treatment.

Men are sometimes conditioned to be stoic and take the pain - this is counterproductive and if physicians aren't aware, they can't address the symptoms."

These conversations are important, but they aren't always easy. Here are some practical tips to help men with prostate cancer make the most of their next doctor visit: • Prepare a list of specific questions before the appointment, so they are not forgotten.

• Keep a diary or list in a notebook any symptoms.

Any changes in day-to-

day life are important information for doctors to know.

• Ask a family member or loved one to come along to the doctor for support.

• Take a note pad and pen to write down key points from the conversation.

As you figure what to do with the leftovers, your mind wonders and great combinations dance in your head.

As good as that Thanksgiving turkey was, changing things up a little and creating mouth-watering dishes is almost as much fun. Try some of these delcious treats for days following the holiday.

Turkey Stew with Dumplings • 3 cups shredded cooked turkey • 1 large sweet onion, chopped • 1 large potato, peeled and cubed • 2 large carrots, chopped • 2 celery ribs, chopped • 2 bay leaves • 1 teaspoon salt • 1/2 teaspoon poultry seasoning • 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme • 1/4 teaspoon pepper • 1 carton (32 ounces) chicken broth • 1/3 cup cold water • 3 tablespoons cornstarch • 1/2 cup frozen corn, thawed • 1/2 cup frozen peas, thawed • 1 cup biscuit/baking mix • 1/3 cup 2% milk

Thanksgiving Casserole • 3 medium potatoes, peeled and cut into chunks • 3 cups leftover cooked stuffing • 2 cups cubed cooked turkey • 1 can (10-3/4 ounces) condensed • cream of chicken soup, undiluted • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder • 2 tablespoons plus 1/4 cup sour cream, divided • 2 ounces cream cheese, softened • 1/4 teaspoon pepper • 1/8 teaspoon salt • 3/4 cup shredded cheddar cheese

In a 6-qt. slow cooker, combine the first 10 ingredients; stir in broth. Cover and cook on low for 6-7 hours.

In a large skillet, sauté beans and onion in oil until tender. Add garlic; cook 1 minute longer.

Meanwhile, in a small bowl, combine the cranberry sauce, soy sauce, vinegar, salt and pepper; pour over bean mixture. Add turkey; simmer, uncovered, for 4-6 minutes or until heated through. Sprinkle with cashews and, if desired, cilantro. Serve with rice.

Yield: 2 servings Crispy Mashed Potato & Stuffing Patties • 2 eggs, lightly beaten • 2 tablespoons finely chopped onion • 1/4 teaspoon pepper • 2 cups leftover mashed potatoes • 2 cups leftover chopped cooked turkey • 2 cups leftover stuffing • 2 tablespoons butter • 2 tablespoons canola oil

In a large bowl, whisk eggs, onion and pepper. Stir in potatoes, turkey and stuffing.

In a large skillet, heat butter and oil over mediumhigh heat. Working in batches, drop potato mixture by 1/2 cupfuls into pan; press to flatten slightly. Fry 4-5 minutes on each side or until golden brown and heated through. Drain on paper towels. Yield: 12 patties.

For the crust: Stir the butter, oil, sugar, and salt together in a medium bowl until evenly combined. Add the measured flour and stir until a soft dough forms.

Using a measuring cup or your fingers, evenly press the dough into the bottom and up the sides of the plate (flour the cup

or your fingers occasionally to prevent sticking).

Cover with plastic wrap and chill in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes.

For the pie: Heat the oven to 350°F and arrange a rack in the lower third.

Place a baking sheet on the rack while the oven is heating.

Place all of the ingredients except the whipped cream in a large bowl and whisk until smooth and combined.

Pour into the chilled pie crust.

Place the pie on the hot baking sheet and

bake until the top starts to brown and the filling is set but still jiggles slightly in the center, about 50 minutes. Remove from the oven to a

wire rack and let cool completely before serving. Top slices of the pie with whipped cream, if desired.

Hallandale Beach Community Redevelopment Agency (HBCRA), the City of Hallandale Beach and Health in the Hood, a non-profit com-

munity-based organization will hold a “Ground Opening” Celebration for a new community garden project at 10 a.m. next Saturday, Dec.

3, at 23 SW 9th Avenue.

The City, HBCRA and Health in the Hood have been working on setting up the garden for more than a month, preparing

large, spacious growing beds ready for the official planting ceremony.

There are eight beds, 60 feet long and about two feet deep; plenty of room for families and the community to plant.

The soil, seeds and fertilizer all are being provided.

A master gardener, hired by Health in the Hood, will oversee and maintain the garden.

Most of the beds will be community beds with vegetables planted by Health in the Hood and free to all residents.

However, a portion of the community garden has been set aside for families.

“We will have 10 to 15 (places) for families on a first-come, first-serve basis,” said Asha Loring,

Hallandale Beach honored two long-time residents for their dedication and ongoing efforts to improve the community. Fran Markowitz and Richard Allen were named 2016 Hallandale Beach Pioneers by the Mayor and City Commission.

Mrs. Markowitz, has been a resident of the City since 1972. She has been active on the City’s Historic Preservation Board and was instrumental in orchestrating the Curci House’s inclusion on the National register of Historic Places. A native New Yorker, Mr. Allen was chosen a Pioneer by the City’s Historic Preservation Board for his dedication to the storied service to the Hallandale Beach Police Department.

For more than 35 years, Mr. Allen has protected the City’s residents, earning several Meritorious Service Awards for going above and beyond the normal demands of the department. The 2016 Hallandale Beach Pioneers were honored at a recep-

Bringing out the moves at the International Festival

Hallandale Beach joined with Hallandale High School last Thursday for the first International Festival at Charger Stadium. The event celebrated the various cultures of students who attend Hallandale High School and of the diverse backgrounds of the families. Ethnic foods offered a taste of various delicacies and many students dressed to represent their backgrounds. Hallandale Beach Parks & Recreation, Code Compliance, Police and Fire all joined in to explain our backgrounds and about the opportunities offered in the City. Getting involved in the activities, is Sam Brinson, Hallandale Beach Teen Zone director, as he learns a few dance moves from ladies dressed in festive outfits.

“They will have to care for (their garden),” she said. If the families really take good care of the garden, they will be able to decide for themselves what to plant in the future.

The ground opening is a family and community event. Residents are encouraged to bring their children and plan on getting dirty as they get down on their knees and dig in to plant veggies to begin the growing process.
