Creative Richard Kluft Blown Away By The Results At Braverman Eye Center Hollywood - At the age of 70, Richard Kluft is certainly not your average retiree.

First of all, many of us know his work from such major films such as “Cape Fear”, “Rock of Ages” and the legendary “Wizard of Oz” to name a few.

Kluft was a longtime skilled post production professional who was responsible for colorizing and transforming older film into digital. He was a colorist, and a darn good one.

“Need your eyes a lot for that,” said Kluft, laughing. “Plenty of detail involved and that was something I did most of my adult life.”

So skilled and well respected was Kluft that he had the pleasure of working on elite movies such as Cape Fear, which was shot in South Florida.

With all the work he did for so many years, using his eyes for everything, Kluft never had problems. Other than the minor this or that, he was fortunate

that with all of his work depending on his eyesight that nothing serious ever developed.

But like most of us, age seems to catch up - one way or another - and when he was 50, the first signs of eye problems began, but it was something that he monitored, and years later, when things started to decline, Kluft found out that cataract surgery would make his life a lot better.

“Obviously when I was told by Dr. (Stanley) Braverman that it was time for me to have the cataract surgery, I was a bit apprehensive,” Kluft recalled. “But that was just temporary.”

what Are Cataracts?

A cataract is formed when the natural lens of the eye, responsible for focusing light and producing sharp images, becomes cloudy and hardens, resulting in a loss of visual function. The lens of the eye is clear at birth but is one of the first parts of the body to show the effects of aging. A cataract is painless and usually develops gradually over several months or years. The onset of a cataract in one or both eyes may cause decreased night vision, impaired depth perception, and increased color distortion.

Cataracts are the leading cause of vision loss among adults age 55 and older. In fact, poor vision from cataracts affects 60 percent of all adults over age 60. However, cataracts also can result from injury, heredity, or medications, so they can affect people of all ages.

Understanding that no two conditions or patients are the same, Dr. Braverman analyzes the patient’s symptoms, performs a comprehensive eye exam, and may test for glare disability and contrast sensitivity before making a diagnosis. The final decision to proceed with the surgery belongs to the patient.

Your optometrist or Dr. Braverman may prescribe glasses, medication or surgery depending on your symptoms, complaints and age. Usually surgery will not be recommended until glasses no longer work to make you visually happy. In the case of clear lensectomy surgery, the patient cosmetically wants to get rid of their glasses, but they are out of the LASIK treatment range.

Cataract Surgery: what To Expect Thanks to new advancements, this is a great time to have cataract surgery. Your eye is like a camera. It has photographic paper (the retina), and a camera lens. Two excellent options exist for cataract surgery. The choice is yours. Traditional Cataract Surgery is the removal of your cloudy natural camera lens, which is usually dissolved using high frequency ultrasound through a small (less than 3 millimeter) opening. This Hanukkah, much of the attention is on Israel

By Mayor Joy Cooper Hallandale Beach - A very Happy Hanukkah to everyone!

There have been major discussions nationally on the announcement about the American Embassy moving to Jerusalem and President Trump’s announcement acknowledging that the Capital of Israel, is Jerusalem. In my book, this is a great movement in the right direction. While I understand that every action has the opposite and equal reaction, in my opinion Israel can now move forward in strength with its strongest allies. President Putin announced his support first. While I am not a fan of either, I am very happy with this unity with Israelis. The American Jewish Congress and other groups have continued to come out and support the position.

The opposite reaction of further acts of violence is concerning. We, here in the United States that have not visited Israel may not have an understanding about how Jews exist under the constant threat of attacks. I know we read about them in the news and how these attacks have spread globally not just against Jews, but Christians and Mus-

lims that support the acceptance of all religious beliefs. Through my experience, I can say Israel remains safe due to the steadfast strength of its people and we need to continue to support them.

A sea of change hopefully will be coming. I have been fortunate to visit Israel. It is a beautiful country and home to many religions. I have fond memories of waking up to the sounds of Jerusalem. The church bells were ringing and the Muslim call to prayers while we walked to the Wailing Wall. These experiences strengthened my belief that the city belongs to the Jewish people.

For thousands of years, they were and have been under siege, kicked out and persecuted.

There will always be extreme views and there will also be some people that want to rewrite history and deny what we know. A group of mayors had the chance to sit, and have a dialogue with the new generation that is working to move forward in peace and this unity was very promising. Just like here in the states, we need to work to create peace.

As we celebrate the holiday, we need unite in understanding and respect of all

religions, despite our own ethnic origins.

Hanukah is the celebration of light, but the origin of the holiday is from the yet another attack on the Temple. The first miracle was the incredible victory of the Maccabees, over a powerful Greek military force controlling the Land of Israel more than 2,000 years ago, yet our ancient sages downplayed the military miracle. It was the second miracle that is the centerpiece of Hanukkah and it is the relighting of Menorah in the Holy Temple in Jerusalem after the occupation. The little oil that was left after the battle should have kept the menorah lit for only 24 hours. It lasted for eight days.

Hence, we light the first candle in celebration and every day for eight days.

The symbolisms are that even in the deepest darkness, the light of one candle can light the way. This means that even one person can make a difference.

VoLuNTEERS NEEDED FoR THE 2018 HoMELESS PoINT-IN-TIME CouNT The Broward County Homeless Initiative Partnership, in collaboration with the Broward Regional Health Planning Council, Broward Sheriff's Office, and Nova Southeastern University, is seeking volunteers to assist with the 2018 Homeless Point-in-Time Count Survey and Built for Zero 2018 Registry.

400 volunteers are needed on Tuesday, January 23rd into Wednesday, January 24th to count people experiencing homelessness during a 24-hour period. The count includes both sheltered and unsheltered homeless. Volunteers are required to attend an orientation session that will cover survey tools, enumerator training, safety, and coordination procedures and regulations. She is an exhibiting photographer who is a stalwart promoter of local artists and art programs in our community, including the Center. Cookies Are Very Popular For The Holidays Ahead

Traditional Sweet Treats Are Now Better & More Tastier Than Ever Before Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. On waxed paper, combine flour, baking soda, and salt.

In large bowl, with mixer on medium speed, beat butter and brown and granulated sugars until creamy, occasionally scraping bowl with rubber spatula. Beat in egg and vanilla. Reduce speed to low; gradually beat in flour mixture just until blended, occasionally scraping bowl. With spoon, stir in oats, raisins, and chocolate chips.

Drop dough by heaping measuring tablespoons, 2 inches apart, on ungreased large cookie sheet. Bake cookies 13 to 15 minutes or until tops are golden.

Transfer cookies to wire racks to cool.

Repeat with remaining dough. Store cookies in tightly covered container at room temperature up to 1 week or in freezer up to 3 months.

oATMEAL CooKIES • 1 1/2 c. all-purpose flour • 1 tsp. baking soda • 1/2 tsp. salt • 1 c. butter or margarine • 3/4 c. brown sugar • 1/2 c. granulated sugar • 1 large egg • 1 tsp. vanilla extract • 3 c. old-fashioned oats • 1 c. raisins • 1 package semisweet chocolate chips (1 cup)

oRNAMENT CooKIES • 1 (16.5-oz.) log sugar cookie dough • 1 can vanilla frosting • Mini M&Ms • decorative sprinkles • 16 Rolos

Preheat oven to 350° and line two large baking sheets with parchment paper. Scoop tablespoon-sized rounds of cookie dough and roll into balls.

Place on baking sheets and bake until the cookies are just beginning to turn golden around the edges, 10 to 15 minutes. Let cool slightly on baking sheets then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.

Frost each cooled cookie, then decorate with M&Ms and sprinkles. Place a Rolo on top of each baked cookie.

SHoRTBREAD BITES • 1 1/4 c. all-purpose flour • 3 tbsp. powdered sugar • 1/4 tsp. kosher salt

• 1/2 tsp. vanilla extract • 1/2 c. unsalted butter • 1 tbsp. red and green nonpareils or sprinkles

Preheat oven to 325 degrees F. In food processor, combine flour, sugar, salt, vanilla, and butter until combined. Place dough in bowl and knead until it comes together.Add nonpareils and knead to combine.

On waxed paper, roll dough into a ½”-thick square.

Freeze 15 minutes. Cut dough into 1/2-inch squares.

Place dough onto large cookie sheet.

Bake until cookies are light brown, 18 to 20 minutes.

SuGAR CooKIES • 3 c. all-purpose flour, plus more for surface • 1 tsp. baking powder • 1/2 tsp. kosher salt • 2 sticks butter, softened • 1 c. sugar • 1 large egg • 1 tsp. vanilla • 1 tbsp. milk

In a large bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt and set aside.

Beat butter and sugar until fluffy and pale in color.

Add egg, milk, and vanilla and beat until combined, then add flour mixture gradually until totally combined.

Shape into a disk and wrap in plastic. Refrigerate 1 hour.

When ready to roll, preheat oven to 350º. Lightly flour a clean work surface and roll out dough until 1/8” thick. Cut out shapes and transfer to parchment-lined baking sheets. Freeze 10 minutes (so your shapes hold while baking!).

Bake until edges are lightly golden, 8 to 10 minutes.

Transfer to a cooling rack. Once cool, frost.

Fort Lauderdale - PAWS, the auxiliary group for the Humane Society of Broward County, has renamed their annual golf tournament The Marti Huizenga PAWS on the Green Ladies’ Invitational Golf Tournament, in honor of beloved Humane Society supporter and dear friend Marti Huizenga. The tournament, now in its 19th year and themed “Bubbles & Birdies,” was presented by AutoNation and Mercedes-Benz of Fort Lauderdale. It took place at Grande Oaks Golf Club on November 6 and 7.

Chairs Monica Correll, Andria Cunningham, Michelle Howland, Alice Jackson and Ursula Scott announced that the event raised over $134,000.

Participants enjoyed a pre-tournament dinner party at the home of S. Donald Sussman and Michelle Howland, where they were treated to stunning water views and a starlit night overhead, thanks to a gorgeous glass tent where the dining and dancing took place. Players even had the opportunity to do a little shopping that night with a couple vendors who were present and a portion of those sales were donated back to the Humane Society.

Just before teeing off on the first day of the tournament a beautiful ceremony honoring Marti’s mem-

ory took place. A bag piper’s tune began the ceremony, followed by a bench unveiling with Huizenga family members in attendance. The inscribed bench will have a permanent home at Grande Oaks Golf Club.

Players then enjoyed two days of golf, a silent auction with a wide array of items to bid on, a live auction, and then an awards luncheon to wrap up the event. Blue Martini offered delicious cocktails on both days, and representatives from Drew James Salon treated the ladies to pampering and blowouts pre-dinner on Monday evening. A heartfelt champagne toast was also held on Monday night in honor of Marti Huizenga. In addition, the ladies enjoyed dazzling tunes by the talented Billy Bones and a prize drawing was available for the chance to win a stunning 18k Gold “Silver Lining” Necklace with Small Cocholong Cloud and Three Accent Diamonds, which was generously donated by Pamela Huizenga Jewelry. A delighted Tammy Tubandt was the lucky winner. Another highlight of the tournament were the animals that were on-site and available for adoption.

Of which, 6 happy furry friends found their forever homes.

The Clasico Internacional del Caribe, the premier Thoroughbred event in Latin America and the Caribbean, arrived for the first time in 50 years in North America Saturday and it was a hit at Gulfstream Park.

The highlight of the five-race Clasico came just before 5 p.m., when the 3-year-old filly Jala Jala from Mexico carried jockey Irad Ortiz Jr. to a nine-length victory over Panama’s Fray Angelico and the Clasico del Caribe presented by Fasig-Tipton.

Horses participating in the Clasico Internacional del Caribe were from the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Mexico, Panama, Puerto Rico and Venezuela.

Gulfstream was shoulder-to-shoulder

Baby Boomers: 10 reasons to go nuts For the roughly 75 million Americans who make up the baby boom generation, a healthy diet and lifestyle are the best weapons against age-related diseases.

Dr. Adler Using Laser In Battle Against Toe Fungus

According to the American Podiatric Medical Association, approximately 40% of patients visiting a podiatrist have complaints or signs of toe fungus. It may begin with tenderness or pain in the toe, developing into an unsightly thick, darkened nail, and it can spread from toe to toe. In fact, the fungus can get so out of control that it can infect the foot and ankle.

Topical treatment such as Lamisil cream usually is the first course of therapy for a mild or moderate case. However, long-term use or oral antifungal medication is not recommended due to the toxic side effects Lamisil can have on the liver. This is a special risk if a patient is taking other medications, including excessive use of Tylenol that can manifest the same hepatic damage.

Over the past few years, Dr. Charlton Adler has been following closely the application and reported results of laser therapy on fungus toenails and other podiatric and wound situations. He is pleased to announce that he now is able to add this service as a therapeutic option in his office in North Miami Beach.

“The introduction of laser in treating toe fungus has had a major impact on attacking this uncomfortable and unsightly problem,” says Dr. Adler. He further explains that Onychomycosis, the medical term for fungal infection of the nail, is often ignored because it can be present for years without causing pain. “When the fungus imbeds itself under the nail,” he adds, “ the nail surface can become darker in color and the area can develop an odor.

Because of the intensity of the heat generated by laser rays, Enrique Mechulon a specially trained and certified laser technician working with Dr. Adler, says that both he and the patient wear laser protective glasses and take several rest periods during the 40-minute process.

“I have already witnessed many success stories where patients have spent years and thousands of dollars to get rid of their nail fungus,” says Mechulon. “Depending on the patient’s general health and nail problem, it can take anywhere from one to nine treatments, but the results are there with minimum risk to the body,” he adds.

“I have wanted to offer this therapy for quite a while,” says Dr. Adler. “However, I am cautious in my approach, and I needed more proof on studies and reports.” Dr Adler adds that research shows that 80% of all toe fungus has been healed using laser therapy. “This is in contrast to topical ointments that only work 50% of the time,” says Adler, “and with topical treatment, the infection usually returns.”

Lessons Learned In Hiring A Private Aide By the daughter of an Aventura mom

Finally, I found the perfect person to look after mom, who could no longer live alone safely. Marie, the aide, was referred by another aide in mom’s building, who seemed to take great care of a very demanding neighbor who was showing signs of confusion like my mother. During the interview process, Marie demonstrated patience, attentiveness to mom’s needs, and had glowing references. I even called two of them, who were out of state, but who affirmed how good Marie was to them or their family member. What a relief! After three weeks in Florida, I finally was able to return to my family in Ohio and feel that mom was in good hands.

At first, all was fabulous. Mom said Marie helped her with showering, picking out her clothes, made small meals, and they went to dinner a lot. Mom also said Marie helped her clean out her drawers and closets, and helped her organize her things.

Then, mom began to complain that Marie moves things around, and mom cannot find them. She told Marie to keep things in one place, and that Marie raising her voice to her. I spoke to Marie, who said mom moves things around herself, and then cannot find them. I suggested that since mom can get confused, it might be best to organize things the way it would be easier for her. The next day, mom called and said her diamond ring and earrings were missing, and the $400 spare money that she has kept in the corner of her bedside table for years was also missing. I asked to speak to Marie. Mom informed me that Marie went down to the store and had not yet returned.

When I called back later, mom said Marie still had not returned and she did not know what she should do for dinner. I called Security in mom’s building. They had not seen the aide since she left in the morning. I asked them to check on mom. Feeling upset myself, I called another neighbor, asking if she could either include my mother in her dinner plans or help mom order delivery from a local restaurant, and then see to it that she had something for breakfast in the morning.

I called the Aventura police to report a possible theft, and booked an early morning flight back to Florida.

What an ordeal followed. However, at least mom was not physically harmed!

Although I had resisted going through an agency due to a slightly higher cost, I began a rapid search of getting competent help as soon as possible, calling mom’s doctors and going online. The name Always Classic Care came up several times. When I called, the staff was most professional asking about mom’s status and needs. The owner, Terry Adler, joined the conversation with more specific questions about mom’s personality and capability status, as well as my concerns and services I felt mom would need. Terry advised me that she and her staff would confer immediately to select the most suitable aide, and that she would personally supervise the case. To my surprise, once paperwork was completed with staff, Terry called me back to report she had someone very special for mom who could start later that evening or first thing in the morning. I was amazed. Well, mom hit it off with the new aide immediately, and she has now been with mom for the over a year. It definitely was a great match.

Although I had avoided going through an agency because of the slightly higher cost, it took a bad experience for me to realize the many advantages of using a home health agency or nurse registry.

Aside from dealing with professionals, home health agencies are regulated by the State of Florida. All of their healthcare workers must submit to a rigorous screening process that includes FBI fingerprinting for any history of wrong doing. A registered agency such as Always Classic Care requires a personal interview conducted by a professional staff who also scrutinize documentation of training, references and work history, and applicants are required to complete preemployment testing as to knowledge of various levels of care. Also, if there is any problem , question, personality or communication issue once the aide is assigned, the agency will get involved and make immediate changes. And, as in the case of the missing Marie, Terry told me they would have become integrally involved in the investigation. I found that the agency may cost a few dollars more per hour than a private hiring, but now, the cost seems minimal when compared to the open communication and peace of mind that it can bring.
