P.A.L. is a non-profit, 501 © (3) organization established to use athletic, recreational and educational activities to instill positive life principles and character-building tools in

youths in an effort to deter juvenile crime and violence.

The Police Athletic League of Hallandale Beach is made up of volunteer Police personnel, City Employees and civic minded community residents.

There were many issues the family had to contend with; however, bright success ensued. And that is the goal of this

charity; to devote its fund raising efforts for Organ Transplantation.

What can I do to keep my gums and heart healthy?

Is There a Link Between Gum Disease and Heart Disease?

Overall the data indicates that chronic gum disease may contribute to the development of heart disease, the nation's leading cause of death in both men and women.

Three new projects have been added for local funding in Hallandale Beach

By Mayor Joy Cooper Hallandale Beach- Last week, our City Commission adopted our state legislative action plan. At the last hour, our City Manager added three projects for local funding. We were told that it had to be added at this time due to the process on the state level. This may be true, however, we were not all briefed on what was going to come forward.

Two of the projects for funding requests have been brought forward as capital improvement projects in the past. This means that they have been discussed publicly by the commission and we have reached mutual consent to pursue. One of the projects was discussed twice in the past and was not approved. As a matter of fact, when the concept was brought forth, it was strongly opposed by our residents.

This is a proposal to study placing an elevated parking structure at South Beach Park.

The ask is for a $350,000 study for a parking structure to be built as part of our mobility plan. It is being slated for our residents, but it really is not.

The parking is also mentioned to be for visitor access to other locations aka surrounding cities that do not have a beach and do not pay taxes to support and maintain our park. Our

beach now has 109 spots and is serviced by our mini bus system. I do not and will not support such a project.

There was a motion made by VM L and seconded by Commissioner L to adopt all three additions to the package. I made a motion to pull the parking item which was seconded by Commissioner Taub and the motion failed. Obviously, we need to preserve the last open space along our beach.

We are not Hollywood Beach we are residential, please tell your commissioners, we do not want to commercialize South City Beach Park. It should remain a residential park. Call city hall at: (954) 457-1498.

The other two projects that were added had been agreed upon before this meeting. The first is part of our parks master plan. We have set aside two plus acres at Chaves Lake to provide access to the lake for recreational purposes. We are asking for funding to help clean the lake and mitigate pollution. During the meeting, I had suggested that we consider pursuing brownfield funding. This is a special national program to clean up properties and lands.

The second project, would be for the under-grounding of electricity in the Golden Isles area off Layne boulevard and A1A. We have set up a task

force of residents who will be working with our staff to evaluate all of the pros and cons of under-grounding. The process is very intensive and does not just include electricity. It would include all utilities; cable and telephone. FPL does help offset a portion of the costs but the rest needs to be paid for by the customers.

The committee will also be evaluating methods of funding underground utilities. These may include a special taxing district, tariffs on electric bills, direct assessments or a combination of all. The project would also include completing the streets to include sidewalks and lighting. The commission also will continue to lobby for beach re-nourishment. This issue is moving forward this session. Senator Jack Latvala has filed SB 174. The bill included on going with funding of $50 million per year. With the past storms statewide, there needs to be a continued plan and we are still partnering with Broward County to move forward on our segment.

The other project is our Austin Hepburn Center. For many years, Senator Sobel worked hard to get and keep funding for our center. It was put in as a direct line item for $100,000, then it was reduced during lean times to $82,000. Last year, the process for

funding was changed and all funding requests needed to be specifically requested, even if it was a line item, the program was not funded.

Our package also includes additional programs; gaming, affordable housing, support for a bill against texting and driving, vacation rentals and many more issues that will help our cities address your needs.

The biggest measures we will oppose are, any revenue caps and further erosion of Home Rule Powers.

Home Rule is the ability for our City to run our City without interference or intrusions that will hinder the delivery of services.

On Tuesday, there was a great article on democracy. With everything that is taking place on the local, state and national levels, there is even a greater need for us all to be involved in the process, speak up and get involved. volved.

Bill Julian visits Hallandale Academy for a Veteran’s Day to remember Former Hallandale Beach Vice Mayor Bill Julian was back doing what he does best reach out to his community last week, prior to Veteran’s Day. Julian had the chance too visit Hallandale Academy and share with the students how important it is to show respect and honor those who have fought for our freedom through the decades.

“This was truly a chance to meet with the students and explain to them how important this day is to all Americans,” Julian point out. “We had a lot of fun, sitting down with the kids and the teachers.”

Julian is indeed one of the patriots that we all

look up to for so many reasons. This Air Force veteran takes part in every event that deals with the veterans and those who currently serve this great country.

Three years ago, Julian helped to assemble displays from families

who wanted to showcase their heroes. That display is presented every Memorial and Veteran’s Day throughout the year.

“By creating those displays, it gives all of us a chance to see the people who put their collec-

tive lives on the line for all of us to live a better life,” Julian said. “We plan in the future to get out to more schools and speak with the students who have no idea the sacrifices that were made.”

Side Dishes Take Center Stage This Year

Let the not-so-traditional foods make the difference this Thanksgiving • 2 tablespoons honey • 1 teaspoon fresh lemon juice • 1/2 teaspoon salt

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Peel and cut the sweet potatoes into 1-inch pieces and put in a 9 by 13 baking dish. In a small bowl whisk together olive oil, honey and lemon juice. Pour mixture over potatoes and toss to coat.

Sprinkle with the salt, and bake, stirring occasionally, for about 1 hour, until potatoes are tender.

While the focus is often on the main dishes when it comes to Thanksgiving, how much thought is really put on the sides?

As turkey, ham and other meats and poultry seem to grab the holiday spotlight, this year make it all about the side dishes. Those delicious stuffings, potatoes and vegetables that have long taken a backseat on this Thursday, will be the centerpiece this year.

Try some of these recipes and serve them up this year:

ASPARAGUS WRAPPED IN BACON • 3 bunches asparagus (about • 1 1/2 pounds), trimmed • 3 tablespoons olive oil • 3 cloves garlic, minced • 2 tablespoons minced fresh rosemary • Kosher salt and freshly ground pepper • 1 pound sliced bacon

Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F. Toss the asparagus with the olive oil, garlic and rosemary, and sprinkle with salt and pepper. Separate the spears into piles of 3 or 4. Wrap a slice of bacon around each pile, spreading out the bacon as

you go so just the top and bottom of the spears are showing. Place the bundles on a baking sheet and bake until the bacon is cooked through, 20 to 25 minutes.

PARMESAN PEAS • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter • 3 small shallots, sliced • One 14-ounce bag frozen peas, thawed • 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt, plus a pinch • 2 tablespoons freshly squeezed lemon juice • 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese • Freshly ground black pepper

Melt the butter in a medium skillet over medium heat. Add the shallots and a pinch of salt and cook until soft and translucent, about 4 minutes.

Stir in the peas and 1/2 teaspoon salt and cook until the peas are soft but still bright green, 2 to 3 minutes. Add the lemon juice and toss. Remove from heat and stir in the Parmesan and a generous pinch of black pepper. Serve hot.

HONEY-ROASTED SWEET POTATOES • 2 pounds red-skinned sweet potatoes • 2 tablespoons olive oil

SOUR CREAM AND CHIVE MASHED POTATOES • 2 pounds Yukon gold potatoes, peeled, • quartered • and cut into 1-inch chunks • 8 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted • 1/2 cup half-and-half • 1/2 cup sour cream • 1/4 cup chopped fresh chives, plus more • for garnish • Kosher salt and cracked black pepper to taste

Cover the potatoes with 1 inch of cold water in a large saucepan. Bring to a boil, then reduce to a simmer and cook until the potatoes are fork tender, about 20 minutes. In a small pot over low heat combine half-and-half and butter. Heat until hot but not simmering.

Drain the potatoes in a colander, tossing to remove any excess water. Wipe the saucepan dry.

Add the potatoes back to the saucepan and mash to a uniform consistency (or process through a food mill back into the dry pot). Give it a quick mix with a hand mixer to incorporate some air and ensure a smooth texture. Do not over mix or potatoes will become gummy.

Using a flexible rubber spatula, fold in the melted butter and half-and-half mixture until just incorporated. Fold in sour cream and 1/4 cup chives and season with salt and pepper.

Gulfstream Park’s Symphony of Lights, a popular holiday tradition, will once again light up South Florida from Friday, Nov. 24–Sunday, Dec. 31! Taking place nightly from 6–11 p.m., the annual event is certain to bring out the holiday spirit in all who participate.
