JANUARY 2024 • AVENTURA DIGEST • PG 10

The sun hung low in the sky, casting a golden hue over the streets of Aventura as a group of warriors gathered, ready to embark on a remarkable journey. Their mission was not one of camaraderie, strength, and healing. These were the courageous participants of the Wounded Warrior Project’s Soldier Ride, a multi-day cycling event designed to empower and uplift those who’ve served their nation. The roots of the Wounded Warrior Project trace back to 2003, emerging as a beacon of hope for Service Members returning from the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. From humble beginnings of providing bedside comfort items, WWP evolved to address the diverse needs of Veterans. Among its transformative programs stands the Soldier Ride, an embodiment of resilience and unity. Soldier Ride is more than just a cycling event; it’s a transformative experience fostering confidence, camaraderie, and physical prowess. Regardless of ability, warriors pedal together, fostering the same unity they once shared in their Military Service. Initially focused on road cycling, the event has since expanded to encompass various ride options, ensuring inclusivity for all warriors. Whether it’s road Biking, Mountain Biking, Skiing, Snowboarding, Virtual Events, or Skill Development Camps, Soldier Ride offers a platform for warriors to challenge themselves and discover new strengths. The heartwarming support for these courageous riders was palpable during a recent sendoff by the City of Aventura Police and guests. Their journey took them through the picturesque landscapes of the Florida Keys, a scenic route that painted a backdrop of natural beauty and resilience. As they traversed U.S.-1 and conquered the iconic Seven Mile Bridge, their determination resonated with the onlookers, igniting a sense of pride and admiration. Cathy Crane, Monroe County Veterans Affairs Director and Event Coordinator, expressed the significance of the Soldier Ride: “The Wounded Warrior Project Soldier Ride is an opportunity for those who honorably serve or have served our nation to build confidence and strength from wounds incurred in service. Moving On Without Letting Go Widower’s new book shares keys to surviving the journey through grief

JANUARY 2024 • AVENTURA DIGEST • PG 15

Everyone experiences grief differently. Some want to move on immediately; others let grief flow through them, following its natural course; still others get stuck — they can’t or don’t want to move on, because their grief is the last thread of connection they have with their loved one. To let go would make the loss feel even more final and devastating. The comforting message at the core of It All Belongs: Love, Loss, and Learning to Live Again, a new book from Judy and Roy Smoot, is that it’s OK to be part of the latter group. “The essence of It All Belongs is to help more people allow (even embrace) their grief as necessary to healing and honoring their loved one lost — and to move gently with it, through to the other side,” said Smoot, who lost his wife, Judy, to Brain Cancer in 2016. Smoot’s book also offers an intimate window into Judy’s own grief while she travels from devastating diagnosis to the end of her life. In It All Belongs, Judy shows people how to live — and how to die — with grace, vulnerability, fear, and humble acceptance. In its special juxtaposition of stories, It All Belongs traces Judy and Roy Smoot’s final four years together, weaving in tools and practices to create an immersive reader experience. POMP, SNOW & CIRQUEumstance-A Fantastical Book Becomes A Phenomenal Show This past holiday season, South Florida’s entertainment landscape was filled with a variety of cheerful happenings, colorful displays and traditional entertainment. There were Christmas attractions and standard holiday shows all around town. The highlight of the season for my family was the new book-to-stage-show premiere of POMP, SNOW & CIRQUEumstace at the Diplomat Beach Resort in Hollywood. I hadn’t been to the Diplomat in a decade and thought it an unusual location for what was billed as a holiday cirque show. Fortunately, there are creative minds like Neil Goldberg, who wrote the book, created the show, and invents new ways and places for the world to be entertained. Together with LA-based Capture Studio Group, the Diplomat was transformed with an abundance of imagination into a wondrous land of enchantment. Once inside the resort, the POMP, SNOW & CIRQUEumstace experience was like following the Yellow Brick Road into a Wonka Factory at Hogwarts. Worthwhile you ask? Categorically, yes, and undeniably gave us a lot to smile and cheer about. My kids read the book before seeing the show and even though the holidays are over, can’t put it down or

stop singing the songs. They were in awe, my wife and I thoroughly entertained, and my parents were surprisingly mesmerized. These people know how to put on a show! The talent was top-notch, original music joyfully contagious and the costumes like nothing we’d ever seen before. Add to the non-stop action a colossal setting surrounding a packed audience with imagery and special effects, and you’ve been transported into the POMP, SNOW & CIRQUEumstance Universe, a place I can’t wait to take the family again.

Sexy, Savvy 70-Year-Old A New Kind of Hero for the Modern Era

JANUARY 2024 • AVENTURA DIGEST • PG 18

Sexy, intelligent and resourceful septuagenarian Lori Brill finds herself caught in the web of a murder investigation during what should have been an enjoyable vacation in London to visit her granddaughter in the lively, award-winning mystery from Charlene Wexler, Murder Across the Ocean. As the story begins, Lori, a silver-haired spitfire long divorced from her alcoholic husband, enjoys an unexpected night of passion in a London hotel with old flame Josh Wheeler. Like Lori, Josh’s looks and appetite for adventure belie his 70-plus years, and Lori finds herself mesmerized by his blue eyes and sweet talk. Lori is all smiles as she steps out of the shower the next morning — until she sees his bloody corpse lying in the bed where they had just made love. The London police naturally suspect Lori, but the case becomes infinitely more complicated when it’s discovered that plenty of people have a motive to murder Josh. On the case is Scotland Yard Inspector Geoffrey Holmes, American FBI agent Jordan Gould, and Lori’s granddaughter Cate and her fiancé, Joseph, who both happen to be London solicitors. Sparks fly, as Cate and Jordan Gould experience a growing mutual attraction, as do Lori and Inspector Holmes. Adding another twist is that Lori’s family has an unforeseen connection to Joseph’s father, Lord Roger Lunt, and to the wealthy German nobleman Baron Joseph Braun and the horror of the Holocaust. So who killed Josh? Was it Josh’s beautiful girlfriend Suzi, who unexpectedly appears in London? Josh’s

Chinese financial backers? British mobsters, who kidnap Lori in an attempt to find Josh’s hidden millions? Was it Baron Braun, who summons Lori to Germany to tell her a 70-year-old secret? Or was it someone else entirely? Murder Across the Ocean can be read as a standalone murder mystery or as the follow-up to Wexler’s book, Lori, the origin story of the plucky protagonist. “Lori Brill combines the unexpected smarts of Miss Marple; the genteel strength of character and family circle of Jessica Fletcher; and the hard-boiled sexiness of V.I. Warshawski,” Wexler said. “Readers who enjoy books about those characters will enjoy Murder Across the Ocean. Mature female readers, who have not yet found a hero who is like them, will at last have one in Lori Brill.” About the Author A native Chicagoan, Charlene Wexler has been a teacher, wife, dental office manager, mother and grandmother. In retirement, her lifelong passion for writing has led her to create several essays and novels. Her other books include Murder on Skid Row, Milk and Oranges, Lori and Elephants In The Room. Her newest books, Farewell To South Shore and We Won’t Go Back, are scheduled for publication in 2024. Her work has also appeared in Chicago Magazine, The Chicago Tribune, The Northwest Herald, The JUF Magazine, the Gazette newspaper of Chicago, North Shore Magazine, the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Dentistry’s Vision magazine, Alpha Omegan magazine and several blogs.

People have about 60,000 thoughts a day, and 70% of those are negative, said Author, Coach and Speaker Rob Cross. “No wonder we feel somewhat stuck, lost, aimless … in our business, in our marriage, with love, with friendships and with parenting,” Cross said in a recent interview. “There’s so much that we want that we’re pushing away, just by how we think.” In his transformational book Flip Your Thinking: To Ignite Your World, Cross shares the refreshingly simple yet radical approach to life he calls “flipology” to challenge readers to question their perspectives on 36 widely held assumptions that prevent people from having the lives they deserve. “Your mind is so powerful that it not only shapes your perception of things, but it also convinces you that it’s the truth,” Cross said. “That becomes your reality. You alone determine what you make things mean.” Cross’ quirky and relatable “flips” — My choice to forgive you sets ME free, not you; Love stays when I let it leave and leaves when I make it stay; To be heard I need to talk less — will have readers wondering if they’ve been viewing life backward and upside-down all along. “I’m going to invite you to FLIP IT!” Cross quipped. “On the other side, you’ll have more love, more peace, and more business than you can shake a stick at!” From how people define professional success to how they approach personal relationships, readers will discover that their circumstances today are outward displays of their inward thoughts and beliefs. A Vision of Enhanced Connectivity and Lush Green Spaces Hallandale Beach Community Redevelopment Agency Invests $3 Million to Transform Cityscape The City of Hallandale Beach Community Redevelopment Agency (HBCRA) proudly announces a monumental investment of $3 Million in transformative Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) projects championed by Burkhardt Construction in the creation of new sidewalks and tree planting around the City of Hallandale Beach. This strategic initiative underscores the HBCRA’s steadfast commitment to advancing community development and elevating the living experience. At the core of the CRA’s comprehensive redevelopment plan are projects that foster enhanced connectivity through added sidewalks and enriched green spaces throughout the city. Residents

within the CRA boundary received informative letters on November 28, 2023, shedding light on the construction details and its anticipated impact on traffic and pedestrian flow. The benefits of these projects extend far beyond construction, reaching into the heart of our community’s well-being. Sidewalk connectivity enhances public safety, providing designated spaces for pedestrians and promoting a sense of community interaction. Walkable neighborhoods have proven to increase property values, creating a favorable economic ripple effect for homeowners and local businesses. Additionally, the focus on sidewalks encourages physical activity and pedes-

trian safety, contributing to the health and wellness of residents. Simultaneously, the tree planting program is poised to transform the cityscape in multiple ways. Beyond the aesthetic appeal, trees play a pivotal role in environmental stewardship. They act as natural purifiers, absorbing carbon dioxide and contributing to a sustainable urban environment. The strategic planting of trees provides shade and helps regulate temperatures, addressing urban heat island effects. Furthermore, trees attract and support diverse wildlife, enriching the ecological balance within our community. Faith Phinn, Deputy Executive Director of the HBCRA, emphasizes, “The

Hallandale Beach CRA has not merely responded to community concerns; we have taken decisive action, aligning these projects with the community’s aspirations for a more connected, aesthetically pleasing, and enriched environment.” The projects reassure residents that the HBCRA is progressing toward a more vibrant, accessible, and harmonious Hallandale Beach. Faith Phinn adds, “These projects signify the city’s commitment to enhancing the quality of life for our residents.” The City of Hallandale Beach CRA remains steadfast in its dedication to substantial community investments, envisioning a city prioritizing connectivity, green spaces, and an elevated overall quality of life.

In the ever-evolving landscape of comedy, where trends come and go and humor continually finds new angles, there exists a league of extraordinary women. These aren’t just comedians; they are pioneers, trendsetters, and masters of their craft. They are the “Funny Women of a Certain Age.” This groundbreaking showcase, born from the vision of Stand-Up Veteran Carole Montgomery, wasn’t just about laughter; it was a movement. Montgomery, with over four decades of experience, saw an opportunity to celebrate not just comedy but the seasoned brilliance of women who have weathered life’s storms and emerged with a comedic flair unmatched by any other generation. What began as a platform for Montgomery and her friends to share their stories and humor swiftly transformed into a cultural phenomenon. The Showtime specials shattered records, introducing the world to a cadre of comedians who didn’t just command laughter; they demanded respect and admiration. These women, whose names read like a who’s who of comedy royalty, have etched their legacies through sheer talent, wit, and fearlessness. Fran Drescher, known for her iconic voice and magnetic presence, joined the ranks of luminaries like Luenell, Janeane Garofalo, Caroline Rhea, Marsha Warfield, and Thea Vidale, among many others. Their humor isn’t just about punchlines; it’s about life experiences and unapologetic truths. They’re not afraid to tackle taboo topics or navigate the complexities of relationships, aging, and societal expectations with an authenticity that resonates deeply. Montgomery’s vision wasn’t confined to a television screen. It blossomed into a national tour, a testament to the hunger of audiences craving more than just scripted gags and rehearsed routines. These women brought raw, unfiltered authenticity to every stage they graced. For those fortunate enough to witness their brilliance, the upcoming show at the Aventura Arts & Cultural Center on Friday, March 22nd, 2024, is a golden opportunity. Tickets, available through Ticketmaster or directly at the box office, promise an evening steeped in laughter, insight, and unbridled entertainment. The Aventura Arts & Cultural Center, nestled at 3385 Northeast 188th Street, Aventura, Florida 33180, isn’t just a venue; it’s a haven where legendary talents converge to create unforgettable moments. A Tale Of Courage And Survival Nilo Cruz’s Play ‘Two Sisters And A Piano’, Set In 1991 Havana

JANUARY 2024 • AVENTURA DIGEST • PG 28

Miami New Drama is thrilled to present the upcoming production of ‘Two Sisters and a Piano’, a riveting play written and directed by Nilo Cruz, the Pulitzer PrizeWinning Author of ‘Anna In The Tropics.’ This extraordinary tale of courage and survival is set in 1991 Havana and is slated to run at the Colony Theatre on Lincoln Road from January 25th, 2024 to February 18th, 2024. ‘Two Sisters and a Piano’ takes place in the wake of the Soviet bloc’s collapse. The play follows the story of two women held in captivity for defying an oppressive system, and a lieutenant who comes from a world of strict militarism. But what begins as a dangerous life-threatening scenario slowly turns into something compelling, as the lines between politics and intimacy converge, invoking a world of escape through love and art. Variety Magazine has already hailed the play “as open as a Havana landscape, with all of its flavors, scents, and sensory overloads at full tilt.” Nilo Cruz, renowned for his work ‘Anna in the Tropics,’ brings this compelling narrative to the stage, one that resonates with themes of freedom, resilience, and the human spirit. His direction promises to immerse the audience in an intimate, emotionally charged experience. “We are honored to bring Nilo Cruz’s vision to life at the Colony Theatre,” said Michel Hausmann, Artistic Director of Miami New Drama. “This play is not just a story; it’s a journey through the struggles and dreams that define the human experience, particularly in the context of recent Cuban history.”

The play’s cast features performances by Thais Menendez, a TV, Film and theater actress, as Maria Cela and Stephanie Machado, a former co-star on CBS’s “Evil” as Sofia. Their portrayals of the sisters are expected to be both powerful and poignant. Maurice Compte, known for his roles as Gaff in Breaking Bad, Santiago “Big Evil” Flores in End of Watch, and Colonel Carrillo in Narcos will be portraying Lieutenant Portundo. Gabriell Salgado, who was recently awarded a ‘Best Actor in a Male Role’ award from the Miami New Times: Miami’s Best Of’ series for his work in Red Speedo, El Huracan and Anna In The Tropics, will portray Manuel Vincent. The creative team includes Director/Playwright Nilo Cruz, Associate Director Samantha Pazos, Scenic Designers Christopher Swader and Justin Swader, Costume Designer Michiko Skinner Kitayama, Assistant Costume Designer Nico Walker, Lighting Designers David Lander and Leo Urbina, Original Music and Sound Designer Salomon Lerner, and Fight Director Lee Soroko. ‘Two Sisters and a Piano’ runs from January 26th, 2024, through February 18th, 2024 at the Colony Theatre, located at 1040 Lincoln Road, Miami Beach, Florida 33139 with an opening night scheduled for January 27th, 2024. Performances are scheduled Thursdays through Saturdays at 8:00 p.m. and Sundays at 3:00 p.m. Tickets go from: $40 - $70 and are on sale at: www.miaminewdrama.org Or by calling Miami New Drama’s Box Office at: (305) 674 -1040. Scoot Safe Sunny Isles Beach The City Is Rolling Out A Motorized Scooter Registration Program Calling all Sunny Isles Beach Residents and visitors with a motorized scooter – there’s a new requirement. The city is rolling out a Motorized Scooter Registration Program to enhance your Safety and Security. We’re introducing Scoot Safe! Sunny Isles Beach. If you plan to operate your motorized scooter within city limits, it’s now required to complete the Registration Process under Ordinance 2023-609. But here’s the good news – this registration is not just about following the rules; it’s about safeguarding your scooter. In the unfortunate event of theft and other security concerns, having your scooter registered can make all the difference. Getting on board with the program is easy as a breeze. Just go online and register your motorized scooter. After completing the Online Registration Form, applicants will be mailed a Registration Decal. The Decal must be affixed to the scooter in a visible location. This Decal is like your scooter’s very own badge – simply pop it on the front of your scooter (we recommend within 12 inches from the top), and you’re ready to hit the road! Decals are NOT transferable from one scooter to another. However, a Decal is transferable from one person to another when there has been a change in ownership of the scooter and in accordance with a change in the registration of the motorized scooter. In addition to registration, this ordinance outlines some important rules for safe scooter operation. Here’s the scoop: Follow Traffic Signals: Just like any other vehicle, riders must obey official traffic-control signals and signs. It’s all about keeping everyone safe and sound. Speed Limit: Motorized scooters should not exceed 15 miles per hour on sidewalks and should not exceed 20 miles per hour on the roadway. It’s a fun ride, but let’s keep it safe. Ride With Traffic: Scooters must ride with the flow of traffic and follow traffic signals, using extra caution around intersections and driveways.

Stay in Line: If you are riding alongside another scooter rider, you must ride in a single file line. Ears Open: While cruising, ditch the cell phone, headset, headphone, or listening device, except for a hearing aid. We need you to stay aware of your surroundings. Be Visible: Your scooter should sport a reflective front white light, visible from 500 feet away, and a reflective rear red light, visible from 600 feet away. Safety first, even in the dark! In addition to registration, all who operate a motorized scooter within the City of Sunny Isles Beach must adhere to the rules set forth in Ordinance 2023-609. Failure to do so may result in a citation. For the first violation you will receive a written warning, for the second violation you will receive a minimum fine of $25. For the third and Subsequent Violations there will be a minimum fine of $50, with a maximum penalty of $500 for a single violation. Violators may face non-criminal traffic or pedestrian infractions and officers have the authority to confiscate the scooter.
