August Is National Black Business Month
By Joyce R. Forchion
Now is the time to recognize the overwhelming economic impact of the Blackowned business.
The influence of an entrepreneur’s success story is apparent in his or her impenetrable brand and capability of fulfilling a need, or void, in the marketplace. Many would immediately recognize the names of wildly popular conglomerates such as Fenty Beauty by Rihanna, World Wide Technology, and the Oprah Winfrey Network. Representing 10% of all businesses in the United States, and 30% of minority businesses nationwide, what are the prospects for profitability among small business owners?
As access to capital increases among Black business owners, the future of growth and development continues to paint a promising picture. According to the U.S. Small Business Administration’s Office of Advocacy, Black-owned businesses account for 3.5 million companies in the nation and more than 1.2 million jobs in competitive industries such as retail, education, finance, hospitality, and technology. For the past 20 years, institutions and professionals acknowledge National Black Business Month in August, urging consumers everywhere to recognize the past and current contributions of Black-owned operations as they cata-

Retirees and Seniors Find Joy in a Conversational Yiddish Course
By Marc Yahrshevsky
A five-session, Zoom conversational Yiddish course will start on Monday, July 8th to benefit the retiree and senior community. This will bring tremendous joy and happiness to many Floridians.
As individuals age, their connection to their roots and early experiences becomes more significant. For many retirees and seniors, speaking the language of their youth is a cherished practice that brings immense joy and comfort. This linguistic journey back to their formative years serves as a bridge to their past and a means to preserve their cultural identity and heritage. Language is deeply intertwined with emotion and memory. According to research, speaking one’s mother tongue can trigger memories and emotions associated with childhood and significant life events. For seniors, conversing in the language they first learned often evokes a profound sense of nostalgia and belonging. This is particularly true for those who immigrated to new countries and had to adapt to new languages and cultures. Speaking their native language can feel like returning home, providing comfort and familiarity that is especially valuable in later life.
The instructor, Gilda Simpkin is a
Yiddish teacher at Norwalk Community College, a learning consultant and corporate trainer for 30 years. She carries an M.S. in Counseling and Human Resource Development. Gilda is on the faculty of Fairfield and Marymount Colleges. She is also the author of My Baby Chase.
Yiddish, the Lingua of Nostalgia
Yiddish holds a special place in the hearts of many elderly Jewish individuals. For these seniors, Yiddish is more than just a means of communication; it is a vital link to their cultural heritage and communal history.
For many elderly Jews, Yiddish connects them to the rich tapestry of Yiddish literature, music, and theater. Engaging in conversations or listening to Yiddish songs and stories allows seniors to relive their past, and ensure that their cultural heritage endures.
Engaging with the language of one’s youth has been shown to have several psychological benefits for seniors. It can enhance cognitive function, as using multiple languages helps keep the brain active and engaged. Moreover, it provides a sense of purpose and belonging, reducing feelings of loneliness and isolation that are common in older age.
For retirees and seniors, consider joining a conversational Yiddish course for emotional well-being, memory health, and brain stimulation. The comfort of familiar words and phrases offers a timeless solace. United Jewish Generations, a Chabad organization for retirees and seniors, is offering a 5 session Conversational Yiddish Course on Zoom starting Monday, July 8th. Sign up at: JewishRetiree.com or call: (954) 458-6000. The course is limited to 30 participants. $50 Early-Bird Price and scholarships are available. Sign up today.

Dogs Love The Aventura Mall
A Canine Adventure Awaits In The Heart Of A Shopping Paradise
Nestled in the vibrant heart of Aventura, the Aventura Mall isn’t just a shopping destination; it’s a haven for dogs and their adoring owners. Proudly wearing its “pup-approved” badge, this sprawling mall has embraced the idea that shopping can be a tail-wagging good time for everyone involved.
From the moment you step foot inside the Aventura Mall, it’s clear that this isn’t your average shopping experience. Amidst the luxurious stores and bustling corridors, dogs of all shapes and sizes are welcomed with open arms — or rather, open paws. “The Mall has seen firsthand how much joy dogs bring to their visitors which is why they made it a priority to create a space where they can feel just as at home as their owners.”
One of the highlights for dog owners at Aventura Mall is Jessica’s Dog Park, strategically located just outside the mall entrance by Serafina. This gated outdoor area is a dog’s dream, offering ample space to stretch their legs, hydrate at dedicated water stations, and even take care of business on the lush green grass. For the convenience of pet parents, a handy pickup station ensures cleanliness is maintained throughout the park.
But the dog-friendly amenities don’t stop there. Recognizing the diverse needs of their furry patrons, Aventura Mall has also installed a secondary Dog Station at the Lower Level entrance, ensuring that no matter where you roam, your dog’s comfort is always a priority.
While shopping can work up a thirst for humans, it’s no different for our canine companions. Aventura Mall has thoughtfully installed two dog water foun-
tains, strategically placed near the outdoor dining areas and Jessica’s Dog Park. These fountains not only keep dogs hydrated but also serve as gathering spots for owners to mingle and share stories of their shopping adventures.
One of the unique charms of Aventura Mall is its pet-friendly dining options. Several restaurants, including: Tap 42 Craft Kitchen and Bar, Pubbelly Sushi, CVI.CHE 105, Serafina, Bella Luna, The Cheesecake Factory, Trattoria Rosalia, PANI, Pollos & Jarras, Motek & Toku, extend a warm welcome to dogs on their outdoor patios. Each patio is equipped with water bowls, ensuring that both owners and pets can enjoy a relaxing meal together.
“We love seeing dogs lounging on our patios,” said John at Tap 42. “It adds a wonderful dynamic to the dining experience and makes Aventura Mall truly special.”

You Snore? Are You Always Tired?
Snoring Is No Laughing Matter!
It may be more than just an annoying habit, it may be a sign of Sleep Apnea
What Exactly is Sleep Apnea?
When the muscles that control the upper airway relax, some people begin to snore. When the airway becomes completely blocked and the person temporarily stops breathing, this is an episode of “Obstructive Apnea.” Each Apnea event may last for a few seconds or up to a couple minutes or more. Events may happen frequently - even several hundred times a night.
Can This Condition Be Treated? How?
There are many effective treatments for snoring. A widely accepted treatment for Sleep Apnea is oral appliance therapy. An oral device custom fit by your dentist is designed to keep your airway open and help prevent Apneas.
The American Academy of Sleep Medicine
Recommends an oral appliance as a first-line treatment option for patients with mild to moderate Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA), and for those with severe OSA who either decline CPAP Therapy or are unable to successfully use CPAP Therapy. This treatment does not involve medications or surgery and helps hundreds of thousands of people all over the world enjoy sleeping safely for a healthier life. Many experience the benefits quickly - often during the first night of use.

A Message from the Mayor of Sunny Isles Beach
By Mayor Larisa Svechin, sibfl.net
As we approach the new budget cycle for the 2024-2025 Fiscal Year, I want to take a moment to discuss our budgeting process and emphasize the importance of transparency and resident involvement.
Our fiscal year runs from October 1 to September 30, but planning for the budget begins many months in advance. The process kicks off in May with a City Commission Vision Workshop, where the Commission shares their ideas and priorities for the upcoming fiscal year. The vision of the Commission is driven by you – our residents. All members of the Commission prepare their top priorities for the budget based on what we learn from speaking with and listening to the citizens of Sunny Isles Beach.
Over the next few weeks, each department works diligently to plan their
budget development. Remember, events happening now are planned many months in advance. To see your ideas come to life, they must be proposed and budgeted for during the budget season, not at the last minute.
Please note that these meetings are tentative pending the county and school board budget hearing dates. Any changes will be updated on our meeting calendar at: sibfl.net/events. I also urge you to sign

Florida Legislature Adopts New Legislation Impacting Condominiums
In a move aimed at bolstering the safety and financial stability of condominiums across Florida, the State Legislature has passed sweeping new legislation that significantly alters the regulatory landscape governing these residential properties. Spearheaded by Senators Jason Pizzo and Jennifer Bradley, alongside support from Senate Democratic Leader Lauren Book and Speaker Designate Daniel Perez, the new laws represent a proactive response to concerns over building safety and financial transparency.
One of the most pivotal changes introduced by the legislation is the revision of recertification timelines for condominium buildings. Under the previous law, buildings were required to undergo recertification 40 years after construction. The new legislation, however, mandates an initial recertification after 25 years, significantly accelerating the timeline for structural and electrical inspections. Subsequent recertifications will then occur every 10 years thereafter, ensuring that buildings are regularly assessed for safety and compliance with updated codes.
For residents and owners in Aventura, this adjustment carries profound implications. “It’s about protecting our homes and ensuring they remain safe for all occupants,” remarked Senator Jason Pizzo during a recent town hall meeting held in Aventura. The event, which drew community leaders and concerned citizens alike, underscored the importance of proactive legislative measures in safeguarding condominium dwellers.
In addition to enhancing physical safety measures, the new legislation places a renewed emphasis on financial preparedness through mandatory reserve studies for condominium associations. These studies, now required every decade, aim to assess and anticipate future financial needs related specifically to structural integrity. By 2025, all associations are mandated to achieve fully funded reserves for structural components, ensuring adequate financial provisions for essential repairs and maintenance. Funds for things such as upgrading the appearance of common areas or replacing fur-
vious practices, where financial planning for long-term maintenance often fell short, leading to unexpected assessments and financial strain on residents. “We are committed to ensuring that condominium associations are financially prepared to maintain their buildings,” affirmed
Senator Jennifer Bradley during the legislative deliberations.
Aventura’s Leading Example
Long recognized as a forward-thinking municipality, Aventura took a pioneering step last year by requiring all condominium buildings within its jurisdiction to submit engineering reports to the city. These reports, which detail the structural condition of buildings, are then published on the city’s website, providing residents with unprecedented access to critical information regarding their homes’ safety and maintenance needs.
“This transparency initiative has set a precedent for the state,” noted Senate Democratic Leader Lauren Book, emphasizing the role of public access in promoting accountability within condominium management. By making engineering reports publicly available, Aventura has empowered residents to make informed
Challenges and Future Prospects
While the new legislation represents a significant stride towards improving condominium safety and financial stability, challenges remain. Some condominium associations have expressed concerns over the financial burden of achieving fully funded reserves within the mandated time frame. Critics argue that the accelerated recertification schedule may also strain resources for older buildings, particularly those requiring substantial renovations to meet updated safety standards. Looking ahead, proponents of the legislation remain optimistic about its long-term benefits. “These measures are about safeguarding our communities and ensuring that our homes are not only safe but also financially secure,” remarked Speaker Designate Daniel Perez, highlighting the collaborative efforts that led to bipartisan support for the reforms.
The passage of the new condominium legislation in Florida represents a significant milestone in the ongoing effort to
enhance residential safety and financial
cation timelines and mandatory reserve studies, the legislation aims to address longstanding concerns over building maintenance and financial transparency. As Aventura continues to lead by example with its transparency initiatives, other municipalities across Florida are expected to follow suit, embracing similar measures to protect residents and preserve the integrity of condominium communities statewide. As these reforms take effect, their impact on condominium owners and associations will undoubtedly shape the future landscape of residential living in Florida for years to come.
Engineering Reports
The safety of the community is a top priority. Building recertification documents are maintained by the City’s Building Division and will be added to the online document center systematically over time. The engineering reports provided by associations are available at: https://www.cityofaventura.com/ DocumentCenter/Index/232

What does Archaeology say about the Jewish Claim to Israel?
By Marc Yahrshevsky
Archaeology is a remarkable tool for uncovering the layers of history buried beneath our feet. For the Jewish people, the ancient city of Jerusalem holds a profound and multifaceted significance, both religiously and culturally. Through meticulous excavation and study, archaeological findings have consistently supported and illuminated the deep historical connections between the Jewish people and Jerusalem, offering tangible proof of their long-standing presence in the land given to them by none other than G-d Himself.
There will be a Two-Part series of a ZOOM Archaeological Seminar about excavations in Jerusalem and the City of David and it will even include audiovisuals of the excavations! The multimedia zoom presentation will take place on Thursday, July 25th and Thursday August 8th at 3 PM – 4:15 PM.
Keep in mind that this is the single most contentious issue in the Middle East conflict between Jews and Arabs. “This presentation will uncover powerful and convincing case for the Biblical story for the Jewish claim to Israel – even for those who have a hard time believing,” says Rabbi Smith, Director of the LeviYitzchok Retiree Academy.
Rabbi Avrohom Stolik, the presenter, has received wide acclaim as a biblical archaeological scholar. In the presenta-
tion, he will share his extensive knowledge of Jewish history and secular Bible study, as well as his passion for biblical archaeology. He has created a unique presentation that includes imagery, diagrams, and videos that can benefit anyone, whether he or she has been to Israel before or has any background in history or archaeology.
The Retiree Academy runs numerous programs and educational programs throughout the year including Talmud, Books of the Prophets, Code of Jewish Law, Chassidic Philosophy and Mysticism, and much more. They just started offering a Conversational Yiddish Seminar as well. Visit: JewishRetiree.com or call: (954) 4586000 for more info about their programs. Archaeology confirms the historical accounts found in religious and historical texts and enriches our understanding of the Jewish people’s enduring connection to Jerusalem. Each artifact, structure, and inscription serves as a tangible link to the past, providing irrefutable evidence of the deep-rooted presence and influence of Jewish civilization in Jerusalem. Join this seminar and find out about your heritage and these new exciting findings.
