By Marc YahrshevskyArchaeology is a remarkable tool for uncovering the layers of history buried beneath our feet. For the Jewish people, the ancient city of Jerusalem holds a profound and multifaceted significance, both religiously and culturally. Rabbi Avrohom Stolik, the presenter, has received wide acclaim as a biblical archaeological scholar. In the presenta-
tion, he will share his extensive knowledge of Jewish history and secular Bible study, as well as his passion for biblical archaeology. You Snore? Are You Always Tired?
Snoring Is No Laughing Matter!
It may be more than just an annoying habit, it may be a sign of Sleep Apnea
What Exactly is Sleep Apnea?
When the muscles that control the upper airway relax, some people begin to snore. When the airway becomes completely blocked and the person temporarily stops breathing, this is an episode of “Obstructive Apnea.” Each Apnea event may last for a few seconds or up to a couple minutes or more. Events may happen frequently - even several hundred times a night.
Can This Condition Be Treated? How?
There are many effective treatments for snoring. A widely accepted treatment for Sleep Apnea is oral appliance therapy. An oral device custom fit by your dentist is designed to keep your airway open and help prevent Apneas.
The American Academy of Sleep Medicine
Recommends an oral appliance as a first-line treatment option for patients with mild to moderate Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA), and for those with severe OSA who either decline CPAP Therapy or are unable to successfully use CPAP Therapy. This treatment does not involve medications or surgery and helps hundreds of thousands of people all over the world enjoy sleeping safely for a healthier life. Many experience the benefits quickly - often during the first night of use.

Retirees and Seniors Find Joy in a Conversational Yiddish Course
By Marc YahrshevskyA five-session, Zoom conversational Yiddish course will start on Monday, July 8th to benefit the retiree and senior community. This will bring tremendous joy andhappinesstomanyFloridians.
As individuals age, their connection to their roots and early experiences becomes more significant. For many retirees and seniors, speaking the language of their youth is a cherished practice that brings immense joy and comfort. This linguistic journey back to their formative years serves as a bridge to their past and a means to preserve their cultural identity and heritage. Language is deeply intertwined with emotion and memory. According to research, speaking one’s mother tongue can trigger memories and emotions associated with childhood and significant life events. For seniors, conversing in the language they first learned often evokes a profound sense of nostalgia and belonging. This is particularly true for those who immigrated to new countries and had to adapt to new languages and cultures. Speaking their native language can feel like returning home, providing comfort and familiarity that is especiallyvaluableinlaterlife.
The instructor, Gilda Simpkin is a
Yiddish teacher at Norwalk Community College, a learning consultant and corporate trainer for 30 years. She carries an M.S. in Counseling and Human Resource Development. Gilda is on the faculty of Fairfield and Marymount Colleges. She is alsotheauthorofMyBabyChase.
Yiddish, the Lingua of Nostalgia
Yiddish holds a special place in the hearts of many elderly Jewish individuals. For these seniors, Yiddish is more than just a means of communication; it is a vital link to their cultural heritage and communalhistory.
For many elderly Jews, Yiddish connects them to the rich tapestry of Yiddish literature, music, and theater. Engaging in conversations or listening to Yiddish songs and stories allows seniors to relive their past, and ensure that their cultural heritageendures.
Engaging with the language of one’s youth has been shown to have several psychological benefits for seniors. It can enhance cognitive function, as using multiple languages helps keep the brain active and engaged. Moreover, it provides a sense of purpose and belonging, reducing feelings of loneliness and isolation thatarecommoninolderage.
For retirees and seniors, consider joining a conversational Yiddish course for emotional well-being, memory health, and brain stimulation. The comfort of familiar words and phrases offers a timeless solace. United Jewish Generations, a Chabad organization for retirees and seniors, is offering a 5 session Conversational Yiddish Course on Zoom starting Monday, July 8th. their homes cool and comfortable while sticking to their household budgets,” said Michael Williford, HVAC Service Manager at Hiller Plumbing, Heating, Cooling & Electrical. “We work with customers to keep their current HVAC systems running smoothly or upgrade to more efficient systems, which can make a huge difference in their utility bills. In addition, there are many other ways homeowners can keep their energy costs down during the hotsummermonths.”
Consider these smart, practical, cost-cutting tips for dialing down your energy bills.
Use Appliances During Non-Peak Hours
Throughout the course of each day, the demand for electricity moves up and down. During “peak” demand periods –such as summer afternoons when airconditioning usage is high, for example –the cost of generating electricity is more expensive. There are also daily “off-peak” periods when electricity usage is lower, making the cost of producing electricity
late in the evening. FPL’s “peak” hours vary by the time or year, meaning using appliances that heat up your home outside of this timeframe when conventional cooling systems are likely running full throttlecanhelplowerenergycosts.
FPL’s “Peak”
Hours
November 1st - March 31st: Monday through Friday between 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m., and 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. excluding Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day and NewYear’sDay.
April 1st – October 31st: Monday through Friday during the hours from 12:00 p.m. Noon to 9:00 p.m., excluding Memorial Day, Independence Day and LaborDay.
All other hours are considered “offpeak” and therefore more expensive to operateyourcoolingsystems.
Service HVAC Systems Regularly
To ensure the best cooling performance and efficiency possible, one of the easiest ways to service your home AC systemistochangethefilter, thiswillputless stress on the unit. For more complex
ensure proper function of ductwork and electricalcomponentsisalsoessential.
Stop Cooling Empty Rooms
One mistake many homeowners make is forgetting to adjust their temperature settings when leaving the house. Whether you’re headed to the beach for the weekend or just headed to work for the day, blasting the air conditioner in an empty house can result in unnecessarily high utility bills. Multi-zone, all-electric heat pumps like those from Mitsubishi Electric allowhomeownerstosetthecomfortlevel and adjust the temperature in each room, so you don’t have to waste energy cooling unoccupied rooms. With a smartphone app, you can even adjust the settings remotely.
Upgrade Your Systems to an Energy-Saving Heat Pump
The Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) incentivizes homeowners who opt for energy-efficient HVAC upgrades, includ-
ing qualified heat pumps, which can boost seasonal energy efficiency ratios and increase efficiencies. There are some pumps that provide more energy-efficient cooling that may equal cost and energy
print for homeowners. These systems are equipped with inverter or variable-speed matically ramp up or down the required amount of energy depending on the room’s capacity. Although annual savings vary, some homeowners can save as much as $1,000 per year by switching to an allelectricheatpump.
Fire Up the Grill
When temperatures soar, use the grill for cooking to help lower energy usage and save on air-conditioning costs. Alternatively, toaster ovens, air fryers and slow cookers use less energy than larger conventional stoves or ovens. Get creative by cooking a pizza in a chiminea or smoking favorite meats as alternatives to using youroven.
Install a Smart Electric Panel
Installing a smart electrical panel alongside an all-electric heat pump enables homeowners to monitor and control energy consumption on-site or remotely using a smartphone for better overallefficiencyandutilitycostsavings.

Summer Deals For Florida Residents
Hotel Staycations Have Never Been More Affordable
By John BernardoSummer returns soon and our Peak Visitor Season in Broward County has already ended. Now snowbirds and spring breakers have settled back in their homes in Canada, New York, Europe, and other frost-beltregions.
Tourist Season (November to April) is over and now hotel managers and staff from as far north as Deerfield Beach and as far south as Hollywood are no longer attracting out-of-towners. Nevertheless, to keep generating revenue during the Summer and Off-Season, hotels in our area are promoting and marketing their businesses to Broward and other Florida residents.
Over the years, hotels in Broward County have ceased operations after April due to low occupancy levels. However, now managers of local beachfront resorts know they can’t depend on Winter and Spring Season revenue alone. So, to rectify that situation, they are preparing for the Summer Season by offering local and Florida residents more amenities, lower prices, andoverall, betterdeals.

Another Pompano Beach resort, the Beachcomber and Villas at 1200 S. Ocean Boulevard, is also trying to drum up businessthissummer.
Oliver Segall, General Manager of the Beachcomber, said in order to attract more guests this summer, the hotel will reduceitsrates.
“The bottom line is room rates and during the summer, locals and Florida residents mainly want to relax at our pool and on the beach,” he said. “One option we’re looking at now is to waive resort fees (including parking fees) and dependingonthelengthoftheirstay, wewilloffer a room rate discount anywhere from 10% up to 30% except during the holidays.” Formoreinformationcall:(954)941-7830.
At Fort Lauderdale Beach, Sonesta Fort Lauderdale Beach at 999 North Fort Lauderdale Beach Boulevard is trying to entice more Florida residents to stay there thissummer.

For moreinformation,call:(954)602-6000.
Digressing to our Summer Season, Broward’s hotel industry remains competitive and managers know how critical it is to attract guests to their hotels allyear round. Of course, in the winter and spring, it’s all about promoting “Escape the Cold” & “Sun In The Fun Vacation” dealstoattractsnowbirds.
But right now and throughout summertime, managers must promote and market “Staycations and summer deals” so they can occupy their rooms with locals and Florida residents. That way, hotels in Broward County can generate more revenue and remain financially stable even though the tourists and out-of-towners aren’t around!
Aventura Forges Historic Bond
Sister City Agreement With Modi’in Seals Friendship & Commitment
The City of Aventura has established its first-ever sister city agreement with Modi’in, a residential municipality in Israel located between Jerusalem and Tel Aviv. Haim Bibas, the Mayor of Modi’in, attended to accept the proclamation and a Magen David Adom ambulance Aventuraisdonatingtohiscity.
The ancient city of Modi’in in was known as the hometown of the Hasmoneans – the place where the Hasmonean Revolt took place and where Judah the Maccabi and his brothers were buried.
The history of the Hasmonean serves as a historical example of the heroism of the Jewish people for generations. The modern city of Modi’in was built near the findings of ancient Modi’in. The first residents brought with them their pioneering spirit and community involvement which resonatesthroughoutthecityeventoday.
The establishment of Modi’in, a large new city in the center of the country was granted, in part, for the strategic need to create an urban continuity from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem and to meet the needs of the housing shortage in the center of the country.
The city provides a solution for people who wish to live in the center but without the hustle and bustle of a big city while enjoying plentiful landscapes, clean air and nature. The city is composed of a young diverse population who chose this new city with all its unique advantages in whichtoliveandtoraisetheirchildren.
Modi’in, the country’s first planned city is spread over 55,000 dunams – half comprises developed areas and the other half green areas. The city was planned in two phases: the first phase will house approximately 125,000 residents and the second will house close to a quarter of a millionresidents.Modi’inwasdesignedto benefit from the natural terrain spreading over the hills and valleys. The roads were laid out to outline the valleys and green publicareas.
Modi’in is known for its comfortable temperatures, being 300 meters above sea level, is open to the north-west breeze andhaslowhumidity.
The city is divided into four main zones: residential areas, main business centers, a light industrial zone and a technology park. Each zone is surrounded by green areas. The planning of the city dis-
tinguishes between residential areas, industrial zones and commercial areas in order to ensure quality of life for residents.
The residential neighborhoods are built around the heart of the city – the urban business center and the central train station. Upon completion, the City Center will encompass public institutions, municipal buildings and commercial centers. In the heart of every neighborhood is a shopping center which provides a convenient shopping solution for the residents.
The City of Aventura is deeply proud to call Modi’in its sister city. With the ambulance the people of Aventura have provided to Magen David Adom, lives will be savedandbebetter.
Magen David Adom (MDA) is Israel’s Emergency Medical Services System – a non-governmental, volunteer-based organization, entrusted with protecting lives by operating a world-class Emergency Medical Response Infrastructure that uses technology to assure emergency care for all Israelis regardless of their religion, ethnicity or race, saving and giving lives via ambu-
lances and blood services and as Israel’s NationalRedCrossSociety.
MDA represents the best of Israel –Jews, Muslims, Christians, Druze – working together to save lives. Each EMS team member, including call takers and dispatchers, is trained as a medical professional and is able to respond to medical emergencies. MDA operates a fleet of over 1,500 ambulances and mobile intensive care units, hundreds of first-aid motorcycles, helicopters, ATVs, ambulanceboats, and dozens of mobile blood collectionvehicles.
Over 200 MDA stations cover the entire country with a network of life saving professionals.
“There is an unbreakable bond between Aventura and the state of Israel, we look forward to sharing ideas, successes, and culture as we deepen our ties.” AventuraMayorHowardWeinberg
City of Aventura leaders look forward to collaborating with Modi’in’s leaders on innovative solutions and best practices to improve both cities.
