SOL PEARLMAN ZEST FOR LIFE By Lynne Peterson - Aventura Digest

Friendly Sol Pearlman knows a good deal when he sees it whether buying and restoring antique Indian motorcycles, getting tickets for the theater or spending time with his family traveling to Cape Cod. Now, Sol can enjoy life even more after having successful eye surgery done by Board Certified Ophthamologist Dr. Stanley Braverman of Hallandale Beach. When Sol was a youngster growing up in Brooklyn, New York, he was playing in the street with a ball that bounced into a storm drain on the curb. Eagerly, he tried to retrieve the ball with a wire hanger. Regrettably, the hanger poked the child in the left eye which affected the pupil,

cornea and optic nerve. His mother took the child immediately to the hospital where a doctor patched him up, but the eye, to his family’s dismay, would not work normally. “From the age of six, my left eye was partially closed and I only saw shadows. As a result, I became bored reading, cut classes and had trouble paying attention. I did not excel in school as my brother and sister did and I turned out to be the black sheep of my family. As I became older, I did my best and worked in management and eventually found satisfying work as a caregiver,” Sol said. During an annual eye exam with optometrist Dr. Norman

Hershkovich in Fort Lauderdale, Sol asked the doctor about his eye trauma from childhood. “The doctor said he knows of an ophthalmologist, Dr. Stanley Braverman, who might be able to help me. At first, I thought the doctor was kidding because fifteen doctors previously said nothing could be done with my one eye and just to leave it alone.” Sol followed up and made an appointment with Dr. Stanley Braverman. After a thorough eye examination and evaluation, Dr. Braverman determined that the injury had caused a corneal laceration and Sol had severe corneal astigmatism because of the injury. Sol also had cataracts in both eyes. Dr. Braverman

“I saw fifteen doctors and Dr Braverman was the only one to say ‘yes’, he could help me!” explained that by removing the cataract and by implanting a Toric Lens for astigmatism in his left eye, as well as by doing additional astigmatism correcting incisions in the

cornea, this would be able to improve the vision in his eye as well as correct the severe astigmatism from the childhood

“Normally I am very scared of the dentist. Hence, I had not been to one in 10 years. But Dr. Gupta was very calming. He assured me that I would not be in pain, and he was right.” – Robyn Almodonai

(Office Manager) Brittney (Patient Coordinator, Elsa (Dental Hygienist), and Marilyn (Senior Dental Assistant) go out of their way to make patients feel at home and their visits enjoyable. Snap-On Smile WHY Snap-On Smile? No shots. No drilling. No adhesives. You can even eat while wearing the Snap-On Smile® appliance. Patients looking for a noninvasive, reversible, affordable approach to restorative and cosmetic dentistry are excellent candidates for Snap-On Smile. It’s an easy, quick and affordable solution for patients who want to feel better, look better, and function better. Patients using Snap-On Smile report an immediate boost to confidence and self esteem. Most are impressed with the natural look and feel of Snap-On Smile and are grateful for the brief time investment - about two weeks - to achieve such life changing results. This revolutionary appliance is the ideal solution for solving a wide variety of short- and long-term clinical challenges, as it serves as both a non-invasive restorative option as well as a diagnostic appliance. Applications include using Snap-On Smile as aesthetic provisionals for implant restorations, as cosmetic removable partial dentures, and even as a long-term smile Laser Dentistry Many people, both adults and children, dread going to the dentist because they fear the Novocain and drilling that have long been the standard treatment for cavities and other tooth repairs. Now, laser dentistry can eliminate the need for both of them. “The laser can cut teeth and gums, fix cavities, do gum and bone surgery,” Dr. Gupta says. Because there is no drilling necessary, the annoying and sometimes frightening sound of the drill is also eliminated. “The dental laser uses water to cut, not the heat of the laser,” Dr. Gupta explains. “It

checks bleeding immediately, making it easy for the doctor to see exactly what he is doing, and it instantly kills any germs it touches, which helps to prevent the possibility of infection. The motto for the laser is, “no shot, no pain, no drilling, no kidding!’ and it’s certainly true.” Electronic Injection, Nitrous Oxide, & Oral Sedation For the times when an injection for anesthesia is necessary, the Midwest Electronic Injection machine makes the process easier and virtually pain-free. The device electronically measures the amount of pressure in tissues so when the liquid anesthesia enters, it is precisely the right amount.” Anxious patients can benefit from nitrous oxide, commonly known as laughing gas, and a single oral dose of sedation medication before any injection. “Many fearful patients prefer this type of anesthesia,” Dr. Gupta says. Temporo-Mandibular Joint (TMJ) Pain Syndrome Another piece of equipment treats TMJ pain syndrome. The removable retainer type device creates space and flexibility in the jaw, allowing more blood to flow and causing pain to lessen. “TMJ can be a debilitating disorder,” Dr. Gupta says. “With this device, we can help the patient get back to normal.” Professional Whitening Professional whitening can be achieved in two ways: bleaching at home, or with an in-office procedure. With at-home bleaching, the dental professional creates a custom-fitted tray molded to the patient’s teeth. A spacer material coating the tray allows exactly the right amount of bleach into the tray, a process that eliminates overflow or waste. The patient uses the trays at home according to instructions given by the dentist. When bleaching is performed in the office, the dental professional can

carefully control the bleaching material. Some of the brand name bleaching systems being used at Brighten Dental Care are Zoom, Sapphire, and the most powerful, Deep Bleaching System K O R whitening. Gone are the days when straightening crooked teeth required unsightly metal bands, brackets, and wires. Instead, Dr. Gupta is certified in the use of Invisalign, braces that are virtually invisible. Implementing the latest advances in 3-D computer technology, the lab creates a series of precisely customized invisible aligners. Now you can have a beautiful smile with invisible braces within six months to a year, without a metal mouth. The invisible braces are a set of aligners which you change every two weeks. Apart from teens, adults are perfect candidates for invisible braces. No messy and awkward metal brackets and wires, less frequent visits, usually 6 to 8 weeks and Brush and floss as usual. Dental Implants Implants are a wonderful alternative to dentures or bridges. They can also be an adjunct to make dentures more comfortable. Once they are put in, they are as strong as real teeth, and can look just as attractive. “You can replace just a single tooth, or all missing teeth with dental implants,” Dr. Gupta says. Veneer Smile Make-Over If teeth have permanent stains or are uneven, broken, misshapen, or have noticeable gaps, laminates or veneers may be the best way to create a beautiful smile. Dr. Gupta uses an amazing product called Lumineer by Denmat.. These thin porcelain laminates bond to the front of the teeth to create a nearly perfect surface. The procedure is permanent and carries a three- to five-year warranty, although many veneers have been shown to last 15 years or longer. A Perfect Smile For Every Budget With interest free or low interest payment plans from Care-Credit and Chase Health Advance, you can have the quality dentistry now and pay it later in small monthly payments (subject to credit approval). So no more excuses, you can have the extraordinary smile you always wanted without any fear of pain or Pesos.

Chen Medical Doctors Are Passionate About Nutrition And Providing Their Patients With Tips For Maintaining A Healthy Body Chen Medical Centers is an advocate for healthy living. Our doctors understand that maintaining a healthy lifestyle is important to overall health and wellness. Chen Medical encourages all patients to eat a balanced diet and engage in exercise regularly. Here are few tips from your ChenMed doctors on how to maintain a healthy body: Fill up on fruits and vegetables. Eat a variety and remember…no single food supplies all of the nutrients you need for balanced nutrition. Drink plenty of water throughout your day to flush toxins and avoid dehydration. Limit your sugar and salt intake. Foods high in sugar can leave you feeling sluggish, while

foods high in sodium are damaging for your heart. The key to maintaining a healthy diet is preparation…so plan to eat healthy! Create weekly menus and make an effort to shop for fresh, wholesome foods. Eat plenty of whole grains, such as whole wheat bread, brown or wild rice, and whole wheat pasta. Exercise regularly for at least 30 minutes. A simple exercise routine may include a morning or evening walk, swimming, or water aerobics. Eat moderate portions and have regular meals to maintain a healthy blood sugar level and steady metabolism. Choose foods low in saturated fat and high in fiber whenever possible. Foods high in fiber, such as beans, spinach, and popcorn will keep you feeling fuller longer. Cook at home more often. Eating out can be expensive, and it is also less healthy than cooking your meals at home. Eat breakfast! Start your day and your metabolism with a nutritious breakfast every day. and out. It’s comparable to having a conversation with somebody; for instance, you bump into a friend on the street and it is not a scripted conversation and talk about things in general. My shows are similar to a conversation with the audience. What other comics do you identify with? I credit Robin Williams for the opportunity to perform for myself and for many other comics among my graduating class. He invigorated the audience interest in stand-up comedy during the late 70’s and changed what the audience came to expect. He was really like the Tasmanian devil; Robin was everywhere. Because of that, he definitely reignited people’s interest in the stand-up comic. What’s your opinion on Internet social networking? I have teenagers and don’t allow them to do much of that because it is addicting. Internet social networking does not strike me as a tool for developing friendships, social and communication skills. I try to teach my family to have conversations and to look at each other. Although I’m guilty of checking my email when I am around my kids, I really try hard not to do that. Sometimes it is easier to recognize when other individuals do it than to recognize it in yourself. When I am out and see families looking at some hand-held device while sitting together, it troubles me. Unless it is something very important that I am expecting, it can wait until I am alone and my children are in school.

There are comedians that make you laugh and then there are those who make you want to come back for more. Paula Poundstone is that person who can deliver a witty performance that you’ll always remember. She would rather be busy than bored and is an author of two books, a national spokesperson advocating libraries, loves to read, talk about her foster children and her menagerie of pets. Having recently performed at Mardi Gras Casino in Hallandale Beach, onstage Paula Poundstone is a presence similar to a jazz musician as she improvises and informally interacts with the audience leaving them laughing in the aisles. Currently on tour, she is promoting her latest CD, I Heart Jokes. Now that you live in Santa Monica, do you consider yourself a beach person? In California I rarely ever go to the beach. I am originally from Massachusetts and go to the beach when I am there. When my children were little, we use to do some kind of beachy activity. Most of the year, I have a busy work schedule, do social networking; it’s fun yet burdensome at the same time. As for a Florida beach experience, I was in Daytona Beach where I flew a kite over the ocean way up high and the kite string snapped and that was the end of my kite day. Do you typically do unscripted live performances and why? I enjoy the response of laughter. I can’t remember stuff very well and get easily distracted even if I have a routine memorized. When I walk onto the stage, something generally throws me off. At first I thought that was bad that I could not be professional and do my scripted set. Eventually, I discovered the real magic of the night is when I connect with the audience in the room. That is the exciting part. Now, I allow myself to do that and try to set it up to have the optimum ability to think and move. Do you look at the audience and see something humorous and build from there? I’ll do the time-honored routine of ‘what you do for a living’ and weave it in

injury. “When I heard this, it was an emotional moment for me because I’ve been looking at life through one eye since I was six years old.” “It’s been almost a year since I had the successful cataract operation in both eyes. My left eye has the Toric Lens implant for my astigmatism and sees 20/30 without any corrective lenses and 20/20 with a mild prescription; and my right eye has the Tecnis Multifocal lens implant and sees 20/20 without any corrective lenses. I can read the smallest print on anything with no reading glasses and now have 20/ 20 vision at night. Now when I pick up a book, I can read and enjoy reading and don’t have to use glasses.” Sol said, “I saw fifteen doctors and Dr. Braverman was the only one to say ‘yes.’ He is a real people person without an attitude. Having the surgery was definitely worth the money and I would do it again! Dr. Braverman made the comment that “it is the best feeling in the entire world to be able to help people to this degree. Over the last twenty years, I have seen incredible changes in all of our surgical procedures. Our surgical technology has moved forward by leaps and bounds. We can do things today that I would not have dreamt that we would have been able to do twenty years ago.” WHAT ARE CATARACTS? A cataract is formed when the natural lens of the eye, responsible for focusing light and producing sharp images, becomes cloudy and hardens, resulting in a loss of visual function. The lens of the eye is clear at birth but is one of the first parts of the body to show the effects of aging. A cataract is painless and usually develops gradually over several months or years. The onset of a cataract in one or both eyes may cause decreased night vision, impaired depth perception, and increased color distortion. Cataracts are the leading cause of vision loss among adults age 55 and older. In fact, poor vision from cataracts affects 60 percent of all adults over age 60. However, cataracts also can result from injury, heredity, or medications, so they can affect people of all ages. Understanding that no two conditions or patients are the same, Dr. Braverman analyzes the patient’s symptoms, performs a comprehensive eye exam, and may test for glare disability and contrast sensitivity before making a diagnosis. The final decision to proceed with the surgery belongs to the patient. Your optometrist or Dr. Braverman may prescribe glasses, medication or surgery depending on your symptoms, complaints and age. Usually surgery will

not be recommended until glasses no longer work to make you visually happy. In the case of lensectomy surgery, the patient cosmetically wants to get rid of their glasses. CATARACT SURGERY: What to expect Cataract surgery is the removal of your cloudy natural lens, which is usually dissolved using high frequency ultrasound through a small (less than 3 millimeter) opening. An artificial lens is then placed inside the eye where the cloudy lens used to be. Cataract surgery continues to improve. Recent developments include nostitch surgery, topical anesthesia, surgical correction of astigmatism, and new upgraded lens designs. Eye drops are given to the patient to aid in the healing of the eye, which takes a few months, but the patient is able to return to normal activity almost immediately after surgery and usually sees well within just days. If the eye is otherwise healthy, cataract surgery is successful in more than 98% of patients and they enjoy improved vision after the procedure. ABOUT DR. STANLEY BRAVERMAN Dr. Stanley Braverman is a Voluntary Assistant Clinical Professor at the University of Miami’s Bascom Palmer Eye Institute and an Adjunct Associate Clinical Professor at Nova Southeastern School of Optometry. In addition to treating patients, Dr. Braverman, a boardcertified ophthalmologist, is a medical researcher, the inventor of several eye surgical instruments and author of many articles for medical journals. He has recently co-authored a text book on all laser Z-Lasik. He has lectured at professional meetings about upgraded lens implants and advances in cataract surgery both nationally and internationally.

Curtain Up - Success ! By David Myles - Aventura Digest

The Aventura Arts & Cultural Center recently held Curtain Up giving theater goers an exciting preview of the new arts season. There is something for everyone with three new series, Broadway shows and fantastic musicals. The Curtain Up event featured nonstop entertainment on two stages, in the theatre and outside. Among the entertainers who performed were the Arts Ballet Theatre of Florida, Kirova Ballet Academy, Orchestra Miami, Universal Dance Studios, Barbra Streisand tribute artist Carla DelVillaggio, and stand-up comics from Low Brow Entertainment. “The community embraced the Center during its inaugural season and we are excited to say thank you with this special event and show them what we have lined up for this year,” said Aventura Mayor Susan Gottlieb. “We are very excited about the Curtain Up event and have many new cultural events planned with more variety. Don’t Let Foreclosure Stop You from Reclaiming Your American Dream! We all know the obvious consequences of facing foreclosure. Losing your home, facing a deficiency judgment for the difference between the value of your home and the amount of your mortgage, and dealing with damaged credit are a few; but unfortunately there is so much more associated with this process than just your finances. Emotionally, losing a home can be extremely difficult. Often times, people build up a veritable carousel of dreams in their mind composed of all the good things they expect to happen in their home as they grow older. Feeling hopeless as you seemingly watch those hopes and dreams slowly slip away only adds to the emotional loss. Couple the financial and emotional loss with the newly released scientific research that reveals a rise in stress related physical ailments discussed in a recent New York Times article titled “Foreclosures are Killing Us,” and it’s easy to see that foreclosure is not something to be taken lightly. So what do you do? There have been several stories in the news about so called loan modification experts who will either do nothing but take your money in exchange for a slew of ‘too good to be true’ promises, or who will, possibly in good faith but still unwisely so, submit your private financial information to a bank numerous times hoping the bank will respond to a plea for help. The

overwhelming failure of the federal government’s modification program only serves to highlight the fact that an approach which relies solely on corresponding with banks to ask for a modification is unfortunately rarely feasible. Moreover, divulging your financial history is not only irrelevant to any legal issue at hand but it is also typically not in your best interest to do so. The larger concern is the servicers’ repeated requests for financial information under the guise of a loan modification might instead just be a fishing expedition to see if you have any assets which would be recoverable in a deficiency. However, there is hope. Thanks to a handful of highly trained, extremely hard-working and dedicated litigation lawyers, homeowners can fight back and with very fair fee structures, they can do so for far less than you might think. These lawyers are seizing upon the opportunity left behind as a by-product of the banks’ rush to profit both when these mortgages were formed and now as they are falling apart. Through the application of leverage resulting from numerous legitimate legal and ethical defenses, while simultaneously educating the lender how they would be far better off in a workout than they will be post foreclosure; with one of these highly trained professionals, you have a chance to

substantially alter your circumstances. It can be a new day in court for homeowners armed with the right representation but take your time before jumping in with just any lawyer. Foreclosure defense and all its inter-related topics are part of a burgeoning new area of law. In addition to exploring all possible legal defenses and counterclaims that can be used in protecting your home, there are also several alternative actions a well-trained attorney can help you with in order to possibly eliminate your liability to the bank and/or prevent them from obtaining a deficiency against you. Be sure you ask for a lawyer’s credentials before signing up, see if they offer a free consultation and during that consultation ask questions to make sure they are well versed in real estate law, bankruptcy, civil procedure and all of the various state and federal consumer protection statutes. With the forthright, aggressive and well-informed approach from a true legal professional, you have a greater chance of saving your home, getting your finances in order, and getting back on track to reclaiming your piece of the American dream! JAZZ FEST By David Udoff - Aventura Digest

sounds of a romance. Not venturing afar, “Catching the Sun” had the same effectiveness in instrumental space. Another highlight of the evening featured Scott Ambush doing an electric bass solo on a custom five-string to the song “The Deep End” combining an impressive fluidity of scales making the instrument sound similar to a drum with popping flatulence. Considered a tourist money maker for the hotels and restaurants, Jazz Fest is a much anticipated event for the barrier island city that alludes to the catchphrase “Florida’s Riviera.” “This is a fantastic four-day festival that began on Thursday with the Miami food trucks meeting at Pelican Park. There was an evening of music at the Newport Beachside Hotel, our main event Spyro Gyra, and concluding on Sunday with a jazz brunch at Solé on the Ocean,” said Sunny Isles Beach Mayor Norman Edelcup. In addition, Jazz Fest pays homage to the City’s colorful history. During the 50’s through 80’s era, Sunny Isles was known as “Motel Row” and promoted the “Fun in the Sun” tourism with a variety of entertainment found at thematic motel and conventional hotel stages. In 1959, the famous drummer and band leader Gene Krupa played at the Golden Strand bar for the entire winter. Jazz is an American art form painted with a full spectrum palette morphed with complexities; moreover, it is an important part in our nation during good and bad times. “Spyro Gyra is what I consider smooth jazz and very tropical. The band that originated from Buffalo has been together now for 38 years; a real testimony to staying power,” said Grant.

For those who enjoy jazz music on the smooth side, Grammy winner Spyro Gyra was the act to catch at the fourth Annual Sunny Isles Beach Jazz Fest. This three-day weekend event in October gave jazz fans top-notch entertainment. Produced by the City in partnership with the Sunny Isles Beach Resort Association, proceeds from the event benefited the Joshua’s Heart Foundation and Miami Children’s Hospital. Master of Ceremonies Stu Grant, jazz radio personality, elucidated the audience on the art form and its influential contribution to music culture. Along with Spyro Gyra, special performances by other jazz artists included Tony Madruga and Frost School of Music’s Henry Mancini Institute Jazz Septet brought a cool vibe to the nightly atmosphere. The Saturday night main event was held at the recently built 5-acre Heritage Park at Collins Avenue. It was an intermittent rainy night, one of the reasons some fans stayed away; nevertheless, a devoted crowd huddled underneath umbrellas. The audience listened to jazz, sipped wine and had dinner while sitting on folding chairs on the park grass. Spyro Gyra, a technically well-versed tight band, played their instruments in precision seemingly effortlessly exploring a modern jazz repertoire of buoyant tones congruent with elements of jazz, Latin, funk and R&B. Jay Beckenstein, the leader is a wonderful saxophone player and lit up the night with a diversity of sounds. Performing the melodic “Morning Dance,” Beckenstein expressed the warm

HOROSCOPES Aries (March 21 - April 19) As you enter November, the gorgeous new moon that appeared on October 26 will still be sending you golden vibrations. Money will begin to pour in to your bank account in the first week, and that’s always fantastic news.

of last month (October), do so soon, for you won’t have a moment to spare.

Gemini (May 21 - June 20) You have a golden opportunity to increase your health and fitness as November opens. The new moon will exert a strong energy flow for at least another week, so if you have not taken any steps to become stronger, healthier, and fit, then you still have a chance to take full advantage of these spectacular vibes.

Taurus (April 20- May 20) Only two days after that new moon last month, on October 28, Jupiter, the planet of good fortune, now in Taurus, sent Pluto, the planet of transformations and power, a major vibration, indicating you may have had substantial financial talks to conduct, papers to sign, or an agreement to negotiate. If you didn’t conclude things at the end

Cancer (June 21 - July 22) You have been dealing with plenty of pressure over the past two years, due to the presence of the eclipses in your sign and the appearance of the

grand cardinal cross angry planets working at cross purposes to each other, adding an additional layer of at times crushing tension. You have had considerable responsibilities at home, too, either because you have been worried about covering the rent or mortgage, or because you have a parent who desperately needs your assistance.

Leo (July 23- August 22) As the month opens, you’ve just experienced a fabulous new moon in your fourth house of real estate, home, and family on October 26, and an exciting option might have already come to you at that time that you will still

want to investigate in early November. You may be looking at a new space, or considering plans to renovate or refresh your present space. All new moons are strong for two weeks, but you would have to focus in on this goal and make it a priority in early November for best results. Virgo (Aug 23 - Sept 22) Your time is coming, dear Virgo. After having come through a very hard time from late 2007 to mid2010, you are deserving of some special care from a loving universe. It’s coming now, at long last. This could turn out to be a major turning point month for you, where all sorts of wonderful things finally start to happen. Things that have been pending will get settled soon, so have patience. Libra (Sept 23 - Oct 22) November and December will be big, important months, because planets

will be playing musical chairs and shifting into new positions. By having planets in new signs, new elements will be added to your life, and things won’t feel as stuck as they have felt for you lately. Last month, from October 5 to 13, was likely a very tough time, so hearing that just about any changes are due is a welcome thought. Scorpio (Oct 23 - Nov 21) November should be a glorious month for you, and not just because it is birthday time! You have some of the most beautiful things going on in your chart, thanks to the nice work your two rulers, Pluto and Mars, are doing on your behalf. Actually, you’ve been able to sidestep many of the difficulties the other signs have been dealing with lately. If you feel that life hasn’t been THAT wonderful in the past few months, be open minded. Sagittarius (Nov 22 - Dec 21) This will be a delicious month, dear Sagittarius, and one of your favorites of all of 2011. You’ve been

working hard, and finally you have come to the point when your talents will be recognized and you can attempt to reach for the brass ring. A much better position, one with all the responsibility and power that you always wanted, is now within reach, and to that end, Mars will help you. Capricorn (Dec 22 - Jan 19) Last month was a heavyduty month, for Saturn was quite prominent in most of the aspects during October’s first half, especially near October 56 and 12-13. Saturn rules Capricorn, so perhaps you dealt with all that happened more gracefully than the rest of us. No matter; that no-frills month is over, and now a much better month is in store for you. Aquarius (Jan 20 - Feb 18) As you begin November, if you feel your career progress has been too slow to suit you, be quick to jump on opportunities that will start to emerge. You are now in the very best portion of the year to make stellar career gains, but you must work fast. Open talks now, but realize you don’t have to actually win the job yet, as big jobs often take weeks or months to be awarded. Pisces (Feb 19 - March 20) What an exciting month you have in store! November holds an outstandingly friendly solar eclipse, November 25, in Sagittarius 3 degrees, to fall at the very pinnacle of your chart, lighting your tenth house of prestigious career honors, awards, and achievement. This should be a moment when so much of the hard work you did in past years elevates you to a new and lofty post in your industry. The eclipse comes in the form of new moon and is known to open doors.

Way To The Forum Opens At The Byron Carlyle Theatre Miami Beach By Eleanor Hannan - Aventura Digest

This widely acclaimed, multiple Tony-Award winning musical, has earned Tony Awards for Best musical, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor, Best Book and Best Director. In fact, every actor who has starred in the musical, Zero Mostel, Phil Silver, and Nathan Lane has won a Tony. It made its first debut in 1962, as Broadway’s greatest fast-paced, witty farce, and one of the most humorous musicals ever written, with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim. This non-stop laugh fest is full of

elements of uninhibited puns, gags, cases of mistaken identity and surprises. Inspired by ancient Roman playwright Plateaus, the musical tells the bawdy story of a slave named Pseudolus and his attempt to win his freedom by helping his young master, named Hero, who has fallen in love with the lovely virgin Philia, living in the house next door, in the house of Lycus, a slave dealer specializing in beautiful women. The slave concocts a deal, so perfect, he would definitely be freed once the girl is turned over to his master.

As all plans, everything goes terribly wrong. The ensuing machinations, gender disguises, and cases of mistaken identity are both mind-boggling and side splitting. The show is now on stage, at the Miami Beach Theatre, under the direction of The Broward Stage Door Theatre through November 13, 2011, located at 500 71st Street, Miami Beach. Performances are evenings at 8 p.m. Matinees 2 p.m. Tickets are $38 & $42 at the box office. For all other information call 954-3447765.

U.S. pets getting sicker; decline in vet visits blamed (ARA) - When Michele Sebesto, of Staten Island, N.Y., adopted JC 10 years ago, she said the chihuahua was an invaluable source of comfort. As a New Yorker, she’d just gone through the 9/11 attacks, and the two developed a special bond. Unfortunately, JC had some minor but persistent health problems. About twice a year, JC would get a urinary tract infection. During an annual preventive care appointment when JC was about 4, Sebesto’s veterinarian took an Xray and made a startling discovery. “When she showed me the X-ray, I couldn’t believe it. The kidney stone was the size of a grape, which is pretty big for a chihuahua,” Sebesto says. “My veterinarian did surgery to remove it, and I was pleasantly surprised at how fast JC bounced back.” After the surgery, JC was put on a special diet, and the dog, now 10, sees the veterinarian for regular checkups and has been healthy and free of urinary tract infections since the surgery. Unfortunately, Sebesto is part of a

shrinking population in the United States. Recent studies show that while the number of pets in America is increasing, fewer pet owners are bringing their pets in for regular checkups, and this could be causing a rise in preventable diseases. “Despite the ever-increasing emotional bond we have with our pets, research shows pets are getting less preventive health care,” says Dr. Rene A. Carlson, president of the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). “At the same time, illnesses that are totally preventable, such as dental infections, ear infections, diabetes, intestinal worms and heartworms, are increasing.” Troubling trends AVMA research shows that veterinary visits for cats and dogs have been on the decline for at least a decade. The average number of annual veterinary visits dropped between 2001 and 2006 from two visits a year for dogs to 1.5 and from one visit per year for cats to 0.7 visits, according to the AVMA’s 2007 U.S. Pet Ownership and Demographics

Dr. Shelly Rubin examines Larry the dog at Blum Animal Hospital in Chicago, Ill. Sourcebook. Perhaps it shouldn’t be a surprise that, while veterinary care appointments have been declining, incidents of pet diseases have increased. In particular, totally preventable diseases are on the increase. The Banfield Pet Hospital’s State of Pet Health 2011 Report found that since 2006 flea infestations were up in dogs by 16 percent and 12 percent in cats, diabetes increased 32 percent in dogs and 16 percent in cats, and hookworm infections in dogs were up 30 percent and 3.5 percent in cats.

An ounce of prevention The vast majority of pet owners care deeply about their pet’s health, says Carlson. In fact 59 percent of dog owners and 53 percent of cat owners say they would, in fact, take their pets to the veterinarian more often if they thought it would help their pet live longer, according to the Veterinary Care Usage Study. “This study shows us that pet owners really do care about their pet’s health and

well-being, but they may not correlate the importance of regular checkups with maintaining health,” Carlson says. “Pet owners shouldn’t wait until a pet is sick to take it to the veterinarian, because pets, particularly cats, will often hide the symptoms of illness when they are sick. So your pet may be sick or in a great deal of pain and it would be very difficult for you to know.” Pets excluding tortoises and some exotic birds - have much shorter lifespans than humans, and, as a result, diseases can develop more quickly. An annual checkup for dogs and cats is like a person going to see their doctor once every seven years. What’s more, pets with existing health problems, like obesity, are

at an even greater risk of developing a chronic condition. “It is estimated that 40 percent of dogs and cats are obese. That’s 54 million dogs and cats. Obesity can result in lifethreatening illnesses such as diabetes, heart disease, and arthritis,” Dr. Carlson says. With so much information now available on the Internet, it is estimated that about 40 percent of pet owners turn to the Internet before their veterinarian for pet health care information. But are they getting the right information from credible sources? “While some websites may provide valuable background information on diseases, many do not. And relying on what may be misinformation may

delay the inevitable visit to the veterinarian. By the time the owner finally gives up on what might likely be incorrect information from an untrained source or advice from other pet owners in a chat room, the pet may be twice as sick or the cure may be many times more difficult or costly. Your pet’s veterinarian is the best source for advice on how you can keep your pets healthy, happy and with your family for a lifetime,” Carlson says. Sebesto agrees. “I think that when you own an animal, you have to make a commitment to provide them with veterinary care,” Sebesto says. “I take my dog into the veterinarian every year.”

Health Decipher a headache’s clues to determine most effective treatment options (ARA) - Nothing ruins a perfectly fine day quite like a headache. The pain can be impeding, disorienting and sometimes even nauseating. Roughly 45 million Americans suffer from recurring headaches, according to the National Headache Foundation. However, not all headaches are created equal. There are several different types, each with varying symptoms. Understanding different headache causes and treatments can help individuals be prepared. Tension headaches, otherwise known as “stress” headaches, are the most common among adults. Symptoms include mild to moderate pain across the forehead or on the sides and back of the head and neck. This headache is often accompanied by a feeling of pressure or tightness. Tension headaches can be triggered by a wide range of factors, such as stress, fatigue, anxiety, hunger or poor posture. The most effective way to treat a tension headache is to take an over-the-counter (OTC) pain reliever and rest until the symptoms subside. Migraine headache symptoms may involve moderate to severe pain. Patients

who have sensitivity to light and sound may also experience nausea and dizziness. Migraine pain is often described as pounding or throbbing and is usually one-sided, lasting between four hours and three days. Unfortunately for migraine sufferers, these headaches are often hereditary and recurring. An OTC analgesic combination can be used as a first-line treatment, but this is most effective when used at or near the onset of a headache, or in conjunction with a prescription medication indicated for the treatment of migraines. Cluster headaches are another variation, and are the least common. Cluster headaches occur more often in men, and happen several times a day, at the same time of day, for a period of time lasting five minutes to an hour. These headaches can cycle for up to a month or longer. This intense pain can be described as a burning or piercing feeling in or around the eye on one side of the head. The patient may also experience eyelid swelling, redness and tearing on one side. Those who suffer from cluster headaches often feel they cannot sit still and will

Distinguishing the difference between fact and fiction this flu season (ARA) - It’s that time of year again - flu season. The weather is turning colder and the sweaters are coming out of the closet, along with the sniffles, coughing, sneezing, sore throat and muscle aches. The seasonal flu, which is also known as influenza, is not the same as a head cold, and should not be taken lightly. In fact, the Center for Disease Control estimates that the flu affects anywhere from 5 to 20 percent of the U.S. population each year, and that approximately 200,000 people are hospitalized each year due to flu-related complications. How can you separate fact from fiction about the flu, and protect yourself and your family? Everest College’s nursing instructors bust some common, flurelated myths to set the record straight. Fact or fiction: The flu vaccine can cause the flu. Fiction. “This is a complete myth. And it is a dangerous one to spread. The No. 1 most important thing that you can do to prevent the flu and flu-related complications is to get the flu vaccine each year,” says Orvella Bradford, a licensed vocational nurse and vocational nursing instructor at Everest College in Anaheim, Calif. There are many strains of flu viruses, but the flu vaccine protects against the three most prevalent

strains each year. There are two common ways of receiving the flu vaccine - the seasonal shot and a nasal spray. The seasonal shot is recommended for most individuals over 6 months old and contains an inactivated form of the vaccine, which cannot make you sick. The nasal spray, which contains a live, but very weak strain of the flu, is recommended for healthy individuals, ages 2 to 49. “Although I strongly recommend getting the flu vaccine, it is important to recognize that the flu vaccine is not intended for everyone, particularly individuals with severe allergic reactions to eggs. It is important to talk to your doctor if you are concerned about the potential side effects from the vaccine,” says Bradford. Fact or fiction: I got the flu vaccine last year, so I don’t have to worry this year. Fiction. The influenza virus that causes the flu is constantly evolving, and the most common strains of the virus can change from year to year. “Even if you got the flu vaccine last year, you are still at risk for getting it again this year, so it is important to get a flu shot once each season,” says Bradford. Fact or fiction: I’m a healthy adult. I can fight the flu off on my own, so I don’t need a flu shot. Fiction.

Even if you are a healthy adult, if you contract the flu then you can start spreading the virus up to a full day before you exhibit symptoms, and for five to seven days afterwards. “This means that even if you are healthy enough to fight off the flu on your own, you could be putting others at risk of infection without even realizing it. This is why we recommend the flu vaccine for everyone who is able to take it,” says Bradford. Fact or fiction: I can wait to get the flu vaccine. Fiction. In fact, the timing of flu season is unpredictable - it can come as early as October or as late as May. The most common months for flu season are January and February, but everyone is encouraged to get a flu shot as soon as it becomes available in their area. “We never know when the flu will hit - it could come early this year. It takes about two weeks for the vaccine to take effect, so don’t wait until it’s too late to get the vaccine,” says Critical Care Registered Nurse Jan Adams, a nursing instructor at Everest University in Brandon, Fla. Getting a flu shot before December is highly recommended to help you avoid the peak flu season. In addition, many locations can run low on vaccinations periodically throughout the flu season due to the difficulties in manufacturing and distributing the high volume of vaccinations needed each year. “This means that it is important to act early - getting the vaccine when it is available and convenient for you will help you avoid a last-minute search for the vaccine,” says Adams.

Americans paying credit cards on time, but lag on mortgages (ARA) - While more Americans are paying their credit card bills on time, a growing number are paying their mortgages 60 or more days late, according to research by Experian, the leading global information services company. Nationally, since 2007, the number of credit card payments that are 60 days or more overdue declined by 20 percent, the study found. In contrast, 25 percent more consumers are paying their mortgages 60 days late. In 30 of the nation’s largest metropolitan areas, the percentage of late credit card payments decreased significantly, with Cleveland showing the most improvement, Experian reports. Residents of the “Rock and Roll Capital of the World” improved their payment rate by nearly 35 percent between 2007 and 2011. Mortgage payment rates, however, did not fare as well over the same time period in many metropolitan areas across the country. The percentage of missed mortgage payments (considered to be payments 60 or more days overdue), rose dramatically in 26 regions in the study, and improved in just four. Portland, Ore., fared the worst, with nearly a 100 percent increase in the number of missed mortgage payments. Phoenix (78.4 percent), Baltimore (66.8 percent), Seattle (65.1 percent)

and New York (49.4 percent) rounded out the list of the five cities with the highest increase in missed payments. At the other end of the spectrum, the number of late mortgage payments actually declined in Cleveland, Minneapolis, Denver and Detroit. “In looking at the numbers, we’re seeing that even in the cities at the bottom of the list, consumers are meeting their bankcard payment obligations better than before the recession,” says Michele Raneri, vice president of analytics, Experian. “While the Experian data shows an overall improvement to these 60-day delinquencies, as much as a 30 percent improvement is seen in the key Texas cities, which is a positive sign in what has been a slow economic recovery.” While the trend is positive on the bankcard side, the mortgage side is continuing to suffer in most of the markets. Delinquent payments and collections can have a major negative impact on a credit score and a consumer’s ability to obtain credit. Experian offers these tips for consumers to consider regarding payment behavior: • Make sure your payments are current, and do not let them be late again. The longer your history of on-time payments, the less impact the delinquencies will have on your
