Danger Signs

From Totalitarian Paranoia

To Authoritarian Madness

Unless we work together to push back against the government’s overreach, excesses and abuse, 2023 will be yet another terrible, horrible, no good, very bad year for freedom

The danger signs were everywherein2022.

With every new law enacted by federal and state legislatures, every new ruling handed down by government courts, every new military weapon, invasive tactic and egregious protocol employed by government agents, we were reminded that in the eyes of thegovernmentanditscorporate accomplices, “we the people” possess no rights except for that which the Deep State grants on anas-neededbasis.

Totalitarian paranoia spiked.

In a Machiavellian attempt to expand its powers, the government unleashed all manner of dangers on an unsuspecting populace in order to justify its demands for additional powers to protect “we the people” from emerging threats, whether legitimate, manufactured or overblown.

The state of our nation suffered. The nation remained politically polarized, controlled by forces beyond the purview of the average American and rapidly moving the nation away from its freedomfoundation.

Do You Need Travel Insurance For Your 2023 Vacation?

Before you buy anything, you owe it to yourself to check the type of insurance you already have

Mark Graham is planning a trip to Sicily and France with his wife this summer. He’s still working out some of the details, but one thing he is sure of: getting travel insurance. Graham can’t imaginetravelingwithoutit.

“We feel better knowing we have the safety of insurance,” says Graham, a retired telecommunications worker from Danville,Calif.

And who can blame him? The Pandemic made travel insurance a must-have item for many travelers, including people like Graham, who fit the “must be insured” profile (retired, overseas travel, cruising). Others who are planning their 2023 trips may still be on the fence. I can help you decide.

It’s going to be another interesting year for travel, experts say.

“Between flight disruptions, weather issues, and unexpected medical emergencies, travel is unpredictable and will continue to be so in 2023,” says Carol Mueller, a vice president at Berkshire Hathaway Travel Protection.

In my last article, I reviewed the process we are going through in our City to address our Infrastructure. City Infrastructure includes everything in our public right of way and everything that is underground up to the property lines. They also include: our buildings, park systems and transportation systems. Obviously, these assets are very expensive to maintain and replace. In Hallandale Beach’s case, we are looking for hundredsofmillionsofdollars.

I received a question after the article was published on what funding we are receiving through other government agencies particularly the Federal Government. As a medium-sized City with a population of 40,000 people as of the Census, we are not a direct recipient of Federal Funding. Cities with populations of 50,000 or more are. Those Cities and Counties are called entitlementcommunities.

Being located in Broward County, we are very fortunate to haveawillingpartnershiptohave dollars allocated from the Federal Government as part of formula grants. These funds include: Annual Community Development Block Grants, Area Council on Aging and Early Learning Coalition. We use these pass through dollars for our Hepburn Center, After School Program, Food Relief and some of our Public Works Infrastructure. On average these funds run between $200,000 to $300,000 depending on what is approved by the FederalGovernment.

Recently under President Biden, the Federal Government issued the Cares Relief and American Recovery Act Funding. These funds were also distributed by the State and County on a formula basis. The COVID-19 Relief Dollars were spent addressing the costs associated with COVID-19. Some direct funding was received by the

Hepburn Center but the other funding for rental assistance was handled by the County. This was approximately $100,000. Our CRA actually did a program for assistance during that time to helprenters.

The ARRP Dollars were the largest amount that was passed through the State. This was $19 Million Dollars. The U.S. Conference of Mayors, Nation League of Cities and Nation Association of Counties lobbied for months to ensure that every government agency was at the table and received relief. Our City spread the allocation over three years to address operational costs as well as staffing costs. This budget year will be the last allocationofrelief.

People may ask, “Well doesn’t the City still get property taxes? Why would they use this for Infrastructure? During COVID-19 all revenues were down. Property taxes are just a portion of our revenues. They pay for our

facilities and set up remote working systems. In addition, the building was never shut down during the Pandemic, so we still had development services fully operational. We were also tasked with additional Code Inspections and the enforcement of COVID19 Restrictions. Without ARRP many cities would have gone bankrupt, including ours. So, every penny of this relief fund was used to address what it was intendedfor.

The next question is, what about all the new Build America Programs? We have applied for and received dollars from the Federal Government. When elected officials use the platform against these types of programs they are doing a great injustice to their constituents. These dollars are our tax dollars. They should be distributed to address needs throughout our country and community. The transposition Program alone will transform our country. As an elected official, I have been fighting alongside my

To date, we have received over $1.5 Million in funding for our EV Charging Station for our Fleet. We have submitted and are anticipating $5 Million for the overall project through various agenciesasapassthrough.

Next week, I will go further into what we have applied for and are working hard to receive to offset the cost to our taxpayers. It needs to be noted that many of the Federal Programs had taken some time for rules promulgating these programs. Energy Development Block Grants are one such program. They have released a program for residential improvements that include tax credits. Cites too will be able to retrofit older Infrastructure.

I will continue in my next article with our Grants and pipes, pumpsandroadways.

I look forward to continuing to serve and keeping our residents informed. As always, I am available for your questions, concerns and ideas to help make our City a better place. New Year, New State: Poll Of Florida Families Finds That Most Would Relocate To Colorado

After another challenging year, this time with high food and gas prices and a summer of travel chaos, it’s not surprising that many people want to pack it all in and live somewhere completely different. But if we had thechoice, wherewouldwego?

www.FamilyDestinationsGuid e.com, the kid-friendly vacation ideas site, surveyed 3,000 families to find out where families would move to, if they could hypothetically have a clean break and move somewhere else - with someinterestingresults!

It’s no great surprise to see that families from some of the colder states wanted a bit of heat and sunshine; who wouldn’t happily trade -30º F winter weather for the warmth of Florida or the beautiful beaches of Hawaii.

So where would Floridians move to, if they had the choice? Perhaps surprisingly, they’d want to move to Colorado. The state is known for its stunning natural beauty, with its Rocky Mountains, forests and a variety of outdoor recreational oppor-

get for punishment. Those who criticized the governmentwhether that criticism manifested itself in word, deed or thoughtwere flagged as dangerous alongside consumers and spreaders of “mis-dis-and malinformation.”

Speech was muzzled. Those who want to monitor, muzzle, catalog and censor speech continued to push for social media monitoring, censorship of flagged content that could be construed as dangerous or hateful and limitations on free speech activities, particularly online. The government spoke in a language of violence. Police violence kills three people a day. Warrior cops—trained in the worst-case scenario and thus ready to shoot first and ask questions later—did not make us or themselves any safer. Despite this, President Biden pledged to expand law enforcement and so-called crime prevention through a $30 Billion “FundthePolice”Program.

Cancel culture became more intolerant. Cancel culture shifted us into an Age of Intolerance, policed by techno-censors, social media bullies and government watchdogs. Everything has now become fair game for censorship if it can be construed as hateful, hurtful, bigoted or offensive provided that it runs counter totheestablishedviewpoint.

Homes were invaded. Government agents routinely violated

tunities. Colorado is also known for its vibrant culture, with a thriving arts and music scene and a diverse and lively food culture. In addition to its cultural offerings, Colorado has a strong economy, with a diverse range of industries including technology, healthcare and manufacturing. The state is also home to a number of major univer sities and a highly edu cated workforce, mak ing it an ideal location for those looking to fur ther their education or start a career.

Additionally, Colorado has a moderate climate with four distinct sea sons and plenty of sun shine, making it a great place for those who enjoy outdooractivities.

The poll did reveal some other surprises. Californians, for example, are happy to turn their backs on permanent sunshine and heat and move to the chilly east coast to New York. However, New York

the Fourth Amendment at will under the pretext of public health and safety. This doesn’t even begin to touch on the many ways thegovernmentanditscorporate partners-in-crime used surveillance technology to invade homes: with wiretaps, thermal imaging, surveillance cameras andothermonitoringdevices.

Political theater kept the public distracted. Having devolved into a carefully calibrated exercise in how to manipulate, polarize, propagandize and control a population, the political scene provided ample diversions with its televised January 6th, 2023 Committee Hearings, the RussiaUkraine Crisis, the Ketanji Brown Jackson Confirmation Hearings andmore.

Bodily integrity was undermined. Although the Supreme Court overturned its earlier rulings recognizing abortion as a constitutional right under the Fourteenth Amendment, it did nothing to resolve the larger problem that plagues us today: namely, that all along the spectrum of life-from the unborn child to the aged—the government continues to play fast and loose withthelivesofthecitizenry.

The government’s fiscal insanity reached new heights. The national debt amount that the federal government has borrowed over the years and must pay back hit $30 Trillion. That debt is expected to be twice the size of the U.S. Economy by 2051.

Surveillance got creepier. On any given day, the average

employees who liaise with European-basedcolleagues.

Wisconsinites would head to Arizona, which offers a sunnier climate, good job growth, a reasonable cost of living, some incredible natural experiences, such as the Grand Canyon and

American going about his daily business was monitored, surveilled, spied on and tracked in more than 20 different ways, by both government and corporate eyes and ears. In such a surveillance ecosystem, we’re all suspects and data bits to be tracked, catalogedandtargeted.

Precrime became more fact than fiction. Under the pretext of helping overwhelmed government agencies work more efficiently, AI predictive and surveillance technologies were used to classify, segregate and flag the populace with little concern for privacyrightsordueprocess.

Gun confiscation laws put a target on the back of every American. Red flag gun laws which authorize government officials to seize guns from individuals viewed as a danger to themselves or others and gained traction as a legislative means by which to allow police to remove guns from people suspected of being threats. Red flag gun laws merely push us that much closer towards a suspect society where everyone is potentially guilty of some crime or another and must be preemptively rendered harmless.

The Supreme Court turned America into a Constitution-free zone. Although the Court’s rulings on qualified immunity for police who engage in official misconduct were largely overshad-

theRedRocksofSedona.

The surveyors also asked 3,000 families which would be their first choice if they were to move to an entirely different country in 2023 – a more challenging endeavor. Most chose the U.K., perhaps because there’s no language barrier, plus it’s full of history, not to mention the Royal Family.

However, Floridians would opt for Italy. The country offers American families a high quality of life, a strong economy, beautiful scenery, proximity to other European countries and the opportunity for cultural immersion. Moving to Southern Europe can be a rewarding and enriching experience for families looking for a change of pace and a new culturalexperience.

Bravest of all? Granite Staters would be happy to try their luck inJapan!

owed by its politically polarizing rulings on abortion, gun ownership and religion, they were no less devastating. The bottom line: there will be no consequences for cops who brutalizethecitizenryandnojusticefor thevictimsofpolicebrutality.

The FBI went rogue. The FBI’s laundry list of crimes against the American people ran the gamut from surveillance, disinformation, blackmail, entrapment and intimidation tactics to harassment and indoctrination, governmental overreach, abuse, misconduct, trespassing, enabling criminal activity and damaging private property, and that’s just based onwhatweknow.

The government waged war on political freedom. In more and more cases, the government declared war on what should be protected political speech whenever it challenges the government’s power, reveals the government’s corruption, exposes the government’s lies and encourages the citizenry to push back against the government’s manyinjustices.

Themilitaryindustrialcomplex waged more wars. America’s part in the showdown between Russia and the Ukraine conveniently followed on the heels of a long line of other crises which have occurred like clockwork in order to keep Americans distracted, deluded, amused and

They also wanted to find out the main reason people would be up for living elsewhere and the results included better weather 16%; a healthier lifestyle 24%; better job opportunities 32% and betterpay24%.

The survey also revealed that 14% have seriously thought about permanently moving over the past year - but what would they miss the most if they moved abroad? The survey revealed what they would miss the most if they moved abroad: unsurprisingly, 40% would miss family and just 8% would miss their friends possibly because it’s so easy to keep in touch these days and there’s also the prospect of making new ones. 32% said the familiarity of how things work and20%saidAmericanCulture.

And finally, if Americans could purchase another passport from any other country, the average amount they’d be prepared to spend would be $7,155. Not a huge amount considering it would be both literally and metaphorically a passport to a new life.

insulated from the government’s steady encroachments on our freedoms.

Authoritarian madness escalated. You didn’t have to be a conspiracy theorist or even antigovernment to recognize the slippery slope that starts with well-meaning intentions for the greater good and ends with tyrannical abuses no one should tolerate. When any government is empowered to adopt a comply-or-suffer-the-consequences mindset that is enforced through mandates, lockdowns, penalties, detention centers, martial law and an utter disregard for the rights of the individual, there should be reason for concern.

The takeaway: the more things changed, the more they stayedthesame.

As I make clear in my book Battlefield America: The War on the American People and in its fictional counterpart The Erik Blair Diaries, if there is any means left to us for thwarting the government in its relentless march towards outright dictatorship, it rests—as it always has— at the local level, with “we the people.”

Unless we work together to push back against the government’s overreach, excesses and abuse, 2023 will be yet another terrible, horrible, no good, very badyearforfreedom.

should they do? Graham’s concerns are common. For example, what if there’s another COVID outbreak or the war in Ukraine affects his cruise? He’s also worried about a possible trip disruption or medical emergency.

Those are issues that a standard travel insurance policy can address. But there are so many choices.

“Travelers are more interested in purchasing travel insurance than ever,” says Karisa Cernera, a director at Redpoint Travel Protection, a travel insurance company. “But choosing a travel protection plan can be overwhelming.”

What kind of insurance is availableforyour2023trip?

If you’re planning to spend more than $5,000 on a trip and you have prepaid, nonrefundable expenses like airfare and a hotel, you need some kind of insurance.

Here are your options:

• Most standard travel insurance policies cover “named” perils such as trip cancellation, delays, medical emergencies, medical evacuation, interruptions, and lost luggage. They cost between 5% and 7% of your nonrefundable, prepaid trip expenses.

• A “cancel for any reason” policy covers all of the above -- plus, you can cancel your trip for any reason and get anywhere between 50% and 75% of your money back. A “cancel for any reason” policy costs between 9% and 12% of the cost of your trip.

• You may also have coverage through your homeowner’s or renter’s insurance, auto insurance, or credit card. You’re already paying for them, so you may be able to skip a separate policy.

Before you buy anything, you owe it to yourself to check the type of insurance you already have. It may be enough. That’s what Anand Kumar, a program manager from San Ramon, Calif., discovered when he booked a Balticcruise.

“I concluded that my credit card provides reasonable travel insurance as well as other bene-

fits, so long as I booked my trip withthecard,”hesays.

Why should you buy travel insurancein2023?

Do you need a travel insurance policy? That depends on who you are -- and your circumstances. Here’s a checklist. If any of these apply, you may needapolicy.

Peace of mind. That’s the number one reason people buy insurance. “They want assurances that if the worst happens, they’re covered,” says Dan Richards, CEO of Global Rescue, a company that provides medical, security, evacuation and travel risk management services. That’s top of mind for 2023, with a war and instability continuing tothreatenmanyvacations.

Medical coverage. That’s a lesson Francesca Owens, a travel coach who moderates Travel The Inside Out Facebook group, learned while traveling internationally. She says she “stupidly” skipped insurance and had to pay cash to settle her hospital bills in Prague. Now she insists that her clients always get insurance. “If they won’t buy insurance,” she says, “I won’t workwiththem.”

Trip interruption and travel

delay benefits. Last summer’s airline disruptions made travelers think about ways of avoiding the chaos. “Travelers want security,” explains Terry Boynton, president of Yonder Travel Insurance. “They want to know that if the travel industry is still still not fully stable in 2023, travel insurance will help foot the bill for trip interruptions, travel delays, and lost ordelayedbaggage.”

Cancellation protection. If you can’t if you can’t afford to lose the money you paid toward your trip, then you might want to splurge for a more expensive “cancel for any reason” policy, say experts like Melissa Beers, co-owner of MyJourneyBeginsTravel.com. Anything else can be a headache when you file a claim, and there’s no guarantee you’ll be covered. “Generally, you have to back it up with medical information and other proof before a travel insurance company will pay the claim,” she says. But do the math before you buy one: You may be spending more than you wouldgetifyoufileaclaim.

How do I know what kind of insuranceIneed?

Which policy is right for you? That isn’t easy to answer

because each traveler is different.

If you’re a 20-something adventure seeker, you’ll need a policy like Redpoint’s Ripcord policies, which include rescue. If you’re retired, you’ll want a comprehensive policy. For example, Graham has decided to buy a policy through Seven Corners, which he found after extensive research. It covers the basics, “and it has a good reputation for claims,”hesays.

Consulting with a travel professional can help. But don’t rely on a travel agent. Instead, conduct independent research online. (I publish a free guide on travelinsurancethatmayhelp.)

Geoffrey Millstone, a travel advisor with Clarksburg Travel, says travel insurance has changed since the pandemic.

Regular “named perils” policies have new rules that make claims more tedious, and lately travel insurance companies have been slower because of this summer’s travel disruptions. He warns that you have to read the fine print carefully.

“Cancel for any reason policies work, but they can take between 60 and 90 days to processtheclaim,”headds.

Whether or not you buy travel insuranceforyour2023trip,travelers say you should at least consider it. Ross Copas, an industrial electrician from Tweed, Canada, says he had a close call on a recent polar cruise that reminded him of the importance ofinsurance.

“There were a few anxious days before we were tested for COVID and boarded the ship,” he remembers. “We had not bought cruise cancellation coverage for that cruise and were looking at losing a significant amount of money if we tested positive.”

Most major travel insurance policies cover COVID but require you to be hospitalized. There’s a workaround. You can also buy travel insurance through a company like Covac Global, a membership program that specializes in covering infectious diseases like COVID and medical evacuation without hospitalization requirements.

Fortunately, Copas tested negative. But he learned an important lesson: Always consider your travel insurance options before you book your trip. He says he won’t make that mistakenexttime.

The killjoys who canceled a lot of Dr. Seuss’s delightful books didn’t get around to How TheGrinchStoleChristmas-yet.

But comparing what I have seen this season with the magical celebrations of my childhood, I think there’s a real Grinch out there. And he is not going to be converted, will not bring the goodies back and definitely will not carve the roast beast.

Many homes might have had to forgo roast beast. British Commentator Alexander Mercouris reported that a Christmas goose was not obtainable, even in an affluent part of London. In America, if you had a turkey with all the trimmings, you paid much moreforitthanyoudidlastyear.

This situation is not expected to be temporary. The world eats too much meat, say the oracles and needs to cut the amount from an average 70 kg per person per year to 24. In the Netherlands, the world’s second largest exporter of food, the government is expropriating 3,000 farms to meet “sustainable

goals. Livestock emits methane and nitrogen-containing waste, a.k.a. fertilizer. So, it must be sacrificed.

Instead, we are supposed to adopt entomophagy - eating bugs. Raising insects is supposed to be much better for the Planet than raising livestock. Insects are said to require about 4 percent of the water and 10 percent of the amount of grain that a cow would require to produce the same amount of food biomass. Also, livestock require a lot of space, which will be needed for all those wind turbinesandsolarpanels.

Among the benefits touted by the New Yorker: “Insects are natural recyclers, capable of eating old cardboard, manure and by-products from food manufacturing and insect husbandry is humane: bugs like teeming and thrive in filthy, crowded conditions.”

If you managed to have a Christmas feast this year despite inflation, an insect-based diet couldhelpyouloseweight.

Did you enjoy a Yule log or

fire? In San Francisco, that could costyoua$500fine.

The Grinch pushed the Christmas tree up the chimney. In many places, most of the decorations are gone. Long ago, there were bells and tinsel on Tucson downtown streets. We drove around to see them. Hospital halls were decked with boughsofhollyortheequivalent.

Grocery stores played carols, as did Rush Limbaugh and some radio stations — and not just the ditties about Rudolph and Frosty. Getting rid of songs like The Little Drummer Boy did not stop the Grinch’s “noise, noise, noise, noise.” That we still have aplenty, asinlewdrapsongs.

The Grinch took the presents. We still have shopping mania, but who knows for how long. Extravagances that don’t meet ESG environmental, social and governance goals might be blocked by your digital bank account even if you are willing to work extra or economize elsewhere.

The Grinch was impressed by the Whos’ demonstrating that

store,” but “means a little bit more.”

There’s the real problem, though Dr. Seuss avoids naming it. Nativity scenes are under attack by secular, atheist extremists. How offensive! A baby, a loving mother, a responsible husband, livestock! Who can bear to look at it! And of course, we must not allow public expression of faith in God, the universal ultimate Lawgiver, who will eventually topple all the oppressors from their thrones. The King Herods of the world have to squelchthisveryidea.

Christmas is about joy, hope, love, merriment, life and light. Resentment or envy of these blessings explains why the real Grinches stand there on Christmas Eve hating the Whos. Their Grinch feet are not ice-cold in the snow. But they don’t care if you and your baby and your grandmother are freezing in the dark and eating bugs to meet the demands they impose with pretensionsofgodlikeauthority.

For ordinary people, Grinches want it to be “always winter and
