This will be the third consecutive year that the HBCRA is partnering with SOBEWFF® to host the Beach Event Series.

All proceeds from the event will benefit the Chaplin School of Hospitality and Tourism Management students at Florida International University. Each year, over 1,200 student volunteers help organize all aspects of the event, including planning, logistics, and overall execution.

Made With Love Set The Table For Romance With a Delicious Date Night At Home

(Family Features) Planning a delicious, romantic date night doesn’t have to take you any further than your own kitchen.

You don’t have to be an accomplished chef to set the table for romance, but you can take inspiration from simple, quality Italian dishes to celebrate the link between food and love.

As these recipes show, a romantic meal can be ready in minutes or, like a great love story, simmered to perfection.

To plan the ultimate date night at home, start by choosing one of these dreamy main dishes made with mouthwatering sauces.

Flavorful sauces make a great Italian meal, but the sauce doesn’t need to be made from scratch (at least, not completely). For example, Bertolli d’Italia sauces are made in Italy for authentically delicious flavor. They are crafted with tomatoes vine-ripened under the Italian sun, finely aged Italian cheeses, fresh cream and Mediterranean olive oil. The result is a sauce that’s perfect for your date-night meal.

Once you select your main course, prepare a simple salad of greens with a drizzle of Italian vinaigrette or Caesar dressing. Pop a loaf of bakery-fresh Italian or focaccia bread into the oven to warm through and serve with butter or olive oil for dipping. Red Wine Braised Beef Short Rib Ragu Prep time: 25 minutes Cook time: 3 hours • 2 tablespoons olive oil • 4 pounds bone-in beef short ribs • salt, to taste • ground black pepper, to taste • 1 stalk celery, chopped • 1 large carrot, peeled and finely diced • 1 small onion, chopped • 8 cloves garlic, finely chopped • 4 tablespoons tomato paste • 1 cup red wine • 4 sprigs fresh rosemary • 2 sprigs fresh sage leaves, chopped • 8 sprigs fresh thyme • 2 bay leaves • 1 jar Bertolli d’Italia Marinara Sauce • 2 cups beef bone broth • water • 24 ounces pappardelle pasta or preferred pasta • freshly grated Parmesan cheese, for garnish Heat oven to 350 F. In 5-quart Dutch oven, heat olive oil over medium heat. Season short ribs with salt and ground black pepper, to taste.

Place one layer of short ribs in pot. Set remaining ribs aside.

Cook ribs 3-4 minutes per side until browned. Transfer to plate and set aside.

Repeat with remaining short ribs.

Add celery, carrots and onion to pot used to brown ribs. Stir and cook until vegetables are browned, about 15 minutes.

Add garlic and stir 1-2 minutes. Add tomato paste. Cook 2-3 minutes.

Carefully pour red wine into pot.

Stir and scrape any browned bits from bottom of pot. Cook 3-4 minutes until wine is almost completely absorbed into vegetables.

Add rosemary, sage, thyme and bay leaves to pot. Add sauce, bone broth and browned ribs. Cover pot and place in oven 2 1/2-3 hours, or until ribs are fallapart tender.

Remove pot from oven. Transfer ribs to plate or cutting board. Remove and discard herb stems and bay leaves. Remove bones from ribs then shred meat into bitesized pieces using two forks or tongs.

Return shredded ribs to pot with ragu. Stir to combine. Set aside.

Bring large stockpot of water to boil.

Boil pappardelle pasta until al dente. Add drained pasta to pot with beef ragu and toss until combined.

Garnish with freshly grated Parmesan cheese.

Creamy Italian Garlic Chicken Pasta Prep time: 10 minutes Cook time: 20 minutes Italian Sausage Spinach and Tomato Rigatoni Prep time: 10 minutes Cook time: 20 minutes • Water • 1/2 box rigatoni pasta • 1 tablespoon olive oil • 1/2 cup onions, chopped • 4 cloves garlic, minced • 1/2 cup mushrooms, sliced • 16 ounces sweet Italian sausage • 1 jar Bertolli d’Italia Marinara Sauce • 2 cups fresh baby spinach • salt, to taste • pepper, to taste • Parmesan cheese, for garnish Bring large stockpot of water to boil.

Boil rigatoni pasta until al dente. Drain and set aside.

In saute pan over medium heat, add olive oil. Add onions, garlic and mushrooms. Saute until vegetables start to brown. Add Italian sausage and cook until done, breaking into small pieces. Add sauce and bring to low boil.

Add baby spinach. Cook until spinach is mostly wilted. Season with salt and pepper, to taste.

Add drained pasta to pan with sausage and sauce. Toss and divide between plates. Garnish with Parmesan cheese.

• 2 tablespoons olive oil • 2 large chicken breasts • 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning • salt, to taste • pepper, to taste • 4 cloves garlic, minced • 1/4 cup onions, chopped • 1/4 cup sun-dried tomatoes, cut into strips • 2 tablespoons capers, drained • 6 fresh basil leaves, sliced • 1 jar Bertolli d’Italia Creamy Rosa Sauce • 1/2 cup heavy cream • water • 1/2 box Casarecce or preferred pasta • parsley, for garnish • Parmesan cheese, for garnish In saute pan over medium heat, add olive oil. Season chicken with Italian seasoning and salt and pepper to taste. Sear chicken breasts on both sides until browned. Remove from pan and set aside.

Add garlic and onions to hot pan. Cook until starting to brown. Add sun-dried tomatoes, capers and basil; stir. Add sauce and heavy cream; cook until mixture starts boiling.

Bring large stockpot of water to boil.

Boil Casarecce pasta until al dente. Divide pasta between two plates. Place one chicken breast over pasta on each plate and top with additional sauce, parsley and Parmesan cheese.

DiCarlo says that his pizzas are shaped in the form of a skateboard because it bakes faster in their new, cutting-edge oven where temperatures can reach as high as 800 degrees.

“Most pizzas that are round take longer to cook,” he said.

“The skateboard shape cooks faster and it’s fresh and hot and ready to enjoy. “It takes 15 to 20 minutes for most places to cook and serve a pizza, or they just give you a re-heated slice of stale pizza. Our pizzas are made fresh to order from scratch and are ready to eat in less than just three minutes. They’re served piping hot and delicious.” This proud pizza owner also adds that while their pizzas are individual size, they are large enough to share for lite eaters.

Don’t feel like choosing your own toppings? No problem!

P.Pole gives customers the option of selecting one of their signature pizzas which are also baked in just over two minutes.

Scrump-tious signature pizza options include the American, Italian, Cuban, Veggie, Meat & Barbeque. “The concept is to build your own pizza, but we also have these signature pizzas where we have chosen the toppings for you,” DiCarlo said.

Prices vary, with $8 for a cheese pizza, $9 for a two-topping pizza and $10 for unlimited toppings where you can let your cravings go crazy! For faster service, customers can order on the restaurants’ app and sign up for their

rewards program. For every dollar spent, customers will earn a coin which accumulates over time so that pizza lovers can eventually use these coins towards purchases in the future.

P.Pole Pizza has also announced that they will be offering their own delivery services in the near future, but for now, customers can get their creative creations delivered via Uber Eats, Door Dash and Grubhub.

Despite opening just a few months ago, P.Pole has already found loyal customers, especially amongst those looking for a healthier pizza alternative. “The weekends have been good and most nights are busy. The experience has been very positive.

We have lot of repeat customers, some who come as many as three or four times a week. We expect to get a lot busier when people know we are here.”

As far as why he chose to open a location in Hallandale Beach, DiCarlo explains that he knows of many other successful businesses and hungry patrons in the area! “I know a lot of people in the city who would enjoy a place where they could grab a quick lunch or dinner to eat without sacrificing quality and taste,” he said. “The pizzas are not greasy they are healthy and delicious.” DiCarlo, who was born in Rhodes Island, has been in the restaurant business since 2004, originally moved to South Florida

three decades ago. This entrepreneur has now made P.Pole the most delicious pizza destination in town. His concept of serving guilt free pies goes back to his experience of previously owning other health-conscious restaurants. He currently owns a gym in Hallandale Beach as well.

The City of Hollywood Celebrates Black History Month In honor of Black History Month, the City of Hollywood’s African American Advisory Council, in coordination with Barry University, will be hosting a Youth Panel Discussion on Mental Health. The discussion will be moderated by Debra Burton, Victim Advocate from Broward Sheriff’s Office and there will be a presentation by Dr. Danna Demezier, Assistant Professor of Counseling at Barry University’s School of Education.

The event will be held in person at Hollywood City Hall, located at 2600 Hollywood Boulevard., in Room 219 on February 17th at 6 p.m. Masks are required to be worn inside of City Hall. Zero Tolerance: Cracking Down on Illegal Dumping

Illegal dumping has been a chronic issue not just for our city but all communities. When I was first elected, I remember having a long discussion with the then City Manager R J Intindola about what can and cannot be done about the issue. The biggest challenge is catching the perpetrators in the act. This is one of the only ways to truly punish those dumping. The second is the property owners are left with the problem and cost to clean up the mess.

Last month Commissioner Taub and I brought up illegal dumping. We had both received complaints about owners of lots having to pay for pick ups which can cost in excess of $100 dollars depending on the amount of trash that had been dumped. I spoke with an owner of a lot in the Southeast area who had already paid three times for clean ups and already had another to have removed. I also received a letter from an owner complaining about the same issue. In the letter he pointed out about what Miami was doing with raising the fine to $1000 dollars if someone is caught. But once again, that is a big if.

At a previous meeting Commissioner Taub had shared a video of someone in that act.

She stopped the person and told him to stop and got his plate.

She then sent it to our police department. We did not get an answer at the time if the person was prosecuted.

During our discussion about the calls and complaints about the issue we agreed, with the support of our colleagues that we would meet and work with staff to develop a better more strategic plan that had more teeth in it. I suggested an award for catching people in action similar to Crime Stoppers. Also offering to work with property owners to put up cameras and not simply giving them a violation. during the meeting that illegal dumping is just that, a crime and criminals can be arrested.

The past month has been a challenge with meeting due to Covid. Commissioner Taub and I had not had a chance to meet with staff yet, which we hope to do soon. After our discussion staff went to work on a draft plan which we received via email. The goal is zero tolerance. There will not be one solution and it will involve multi-departments and our residents to get involved.

The first goal will be to target identified ‘hot spots’ throughout the city. I know we have all seen

them. On a lot I drive by on NE 3rd Street there always seems to have dumping. It is posted but every month there is a pile of furniture or mattresses. To me it seems obvious it is from the rental across the street. Again, without catching them in the act we cannot be certain.

Staff report that due to a lack of staffing resources on code enforcement over the years to address the volume of violations.

In 2020 we added an additional code position and hired a new Code Enforcement Official, Mitch Posner. Illegal dumping cases actually doubled in the past

years from 72 in 2019 to 157 in 2020 and in 2021 to 379. In December 2021 there were 81 trash cases alone.

In addition to code and residents reporting illegal dumping, our parking enforcement officers are also reporting trash. This is a tremendous help. While it is great that we are doing more and more enforcement for dumping, these

calls take resources away from our code enforcement issues.

Staff has also evaluated what are called ‘hot spots’ like the one I mentioned on 3rd street. To date there are 20 of these spots that have been located, they will be working with the property owners to get it resolved. We are encouraging all our residents and businesses to report cases on our HBapp. The HBapp will be linked to Egov where work order tickets will be generated in a timelier manner. Not only does this help alert staff it will help with response times. The HBapp will also provide us with data to be utilized for performance measures, The next step will be with prevention. Hallandale PD has initiated a pilot program to help identify and prosecute violators.

Interdepartmental coordination will be key. DPW handles pick ups so we will be hiring two more code enforcement officers to focus specifically with sanitation.

Education is also a big component. Staff is developing a robust marketing campaign to get the word out about all the new enhancements to our programs. People need to understand our trash pick-up programs, the cost and risk of illegal dumping and the new reward programs. Marketing will be done in email , FB text and other venues.
