While the popularity of Feb. 14th has diminished in some circles, others take the day to an extreme - and pretty much - pull out all the stops. "I like this holiday," Sam Harris of Hollywood said. "It's still a true romantic day if you plan everything out and do the right things." Celebrating Black History Month in Hollywood By Kris Rebar, Public Relations Coordinator HOLLYWOOD - In honor of Black History Month, Barry University, in partnership with the City of Hollywood’s African American Advisory Board, is hosting an African American History and Culture Workshop Series. The workshops will cover a wide variety of topics and promise to be an interactive, educational experience with noted lecturers, informative film clips, story-telling and role-playing activities. The work
shops will be held on the second and fourth Tuesdays in February, March and April from 6:00 to 8:00 pm at Hollywood City Hall, 2600 Hollywood Boulevard in the Commission Chamber. The series began this past Tuesday with a workshop launch conducted by Dr. Glenn Bowen, the Director of Community Service Initiatives at Barry University. Guest speakers also included S. By Lynne Peterson Sun Times Writer Friendly Sol Pearlman knows a good deal when he sees it whether, buying and restoring antique Indian motorcycles, getting tickets for the theater, or spending time with his family traveling to Cape Cod. Now Sol can enjoy life even more, after having successful eye surgery done by Board Certified Ophthalmologist Dr. Stanley Braverman of Hallandale Beach. When Sol was a youngster growing up in Brooklyn, New York, he was playing in the street with a ball that bounced into a storm drain on the curb. Eagerly, he tried to retrieve the ball with a wire hanger. Regrettably, the hanger poked the child in the left eye which affected the pupil, cornea and optic nerve. His mother took the child immediately to the hospital where a doctor patched him up, but the eye, to his family’s dismay, would not work normally. “From the age of six, my left eye was parti-

As a result, I became bored reading, cut classes and had trouble paying attention. I did not excel in school as my brothers and sister did and I turned out to be the black sheep of my family. As I became older, I did my best and worked in management and eventually found satisfying work as a caregiver,” Sol said.
