The Cost of the Nation’s Endless Wars

In An Ongoing Effort to Police The Globe, War spending is Bankrupting America

“Autocrats only understand one word: no, no, no. No you will not take my country, no you will not take my freedom, no you will not take my future... A dictator bent on rebuilding an empire will never be able to ease the people’s love of liberty. Brutality will never grind down the will of the free.” President Biden

Oh, the hypocrisy.

To hear President Biden talk about Russia’s aggression against Ukraine, you might imagine that Putin is the only dictator bent on expanding his military empire through the use of occupation, aggression and oppression.

Yet the United States is no better, having spent much of the past half-century policing the globe, occupying other countries and waging endless wars.

What most Americans fail to recognize is that these ongoing wars have little to do with keeping the country safe and everything to do with propping up a military industrial complex that has its sights set on world domination.

War has become a huge money-making venture, and the U.S. Government, with its vast military empire, is one of its best buyers and sellers.

America’s part in the showdown between Russia and the Ukraine has already cost taxpayers more than $112 Billion and shows no signs of abating.

Clearly, it’s time for the U.S. Government to stop policing the globe.

The U.S. military reportedly has more than 1.3 million men and women on active duty, with more than 200,000 of them stationed overseas in nearly every country in the world.

Incredibly, America’s military forces aren’t being deployed abroad to protect our freedoms here at home. Rather, they’re being used to guard oil fields, build foreign infrastructure and protect the financial interests of the corporate elite. In fact, the United States military spends about $81 Billion a year just to protect oil supplies around the

world. The reach of America’s military empire includes close to 800 bases in as many as 160 countries, operated at a cost of more than $156 Billion annually. As investigative journalist David Vine reports, “Even US military resorts and recreation areas in places like the Bavarian Alps and Seoul, South Korea, are bases of a kind. Worldwide, the military runs more than 170 golf courses.”

This is how a military empire occupies the globe.

After 20 years of propping up Afghanistan to the tune of trillions of dollars and thousands of lives lost, the U.S. military may have finally been forced out, but those troops represent just a fraction of our military presence worldwide.

In an ongoing effort to police the globe, American military service-people continue to be deployed to far-flung places in the Middle East and elsewhere.

This is how the military industrial complex, aided and abetted by the likes of Joe Biden, Donald Trump, Barack Obama, George W. Bush, Bill Clinton and others, continues to get rich at taxpayer expense.

Yet while the rationale may keep changing for why American military forces are policing the globe, these wars abroad aren’t

making America—or the rest of the world—any safer, are certainly not making America great again, and are undeniably digging the U.S. deeper into debt.

War spending is bankrupting America.

Although the U.S. constitutes only 5% of the world’s population, America boasts almost 50% of the world’s total military expenditure, spending more on the military than the next 19 biggest spending nations combined.

In fact, the Pentagon spends more on war than all 50 states combined spend on health, education, welfare, and safety.

The American militaryindustrial complex has erected an empire unsurpassed in history in its breadth and scope, one dedicated to conducting perpetual warfare throughout the earth.

Since 2001, the U.S. Government has spent more than $4.7 Trillion waging its endless wars.

Having been co-opted by greedy defense contractors, corrupt politicians and incompetent government officials, America’s expanding military empire is bleeding the country dry at a rate of more than $32 million per hour.

In fact, the U.S. Government has spent more money every five seconds in Iraq than the average

American earns in a year.

Future wars and military exercises waged around the globe are expected to push the total bill upwards of $12 Trillion by 2053.

Talk about fiscally irresponsible: the U.S. Government is spending money it doesn’t have on a military empire it can’t afford.

Unfortunately, even if we were to put an end to all of the government’s military meddling and bring all of the troops home today, it would take decades to pay down the price of these wars and get the government’s creditors off our backs.

As Investigative Journalist Uri Friedman puts it, for more than 15 years now, the United States has been fighting terrorism with a credit card, “essentially bankrolling the wars with debt, in the form of purchases of U.S. Treasury bonds by U.S.-based entities like pension funds and state and local governments and by countries like China and Japan.” Americans have thus far allowed themselves to be spoon-

fed a steady diet of pro-war propaganda that keeps them content to wave flags with patriotic fervor and less inclined to look too closely at the mounting body counts, the ruined lives, the ravaged countries, the blowback arising from ill-advised targeteddrone killings and bombing campaigns in foreign lands, or the transformation of our own homeland into a warzone.

That needs to change.

James Madison was right: “No nation could preserve its freedom in the midst of continual warfare.” As Madison explained, “Of all the enemies to public liberty war is, perhaps, the most to be dreaded because it comprises and develops the germ of every other. War is the parent of armies; from these proceeds debts and taxes… known instruments for bringing the many under the domination of the few.”

We are seeing this play out before our eyes.

The government is destabilizing the economy, destroying the national infrastructure through neglect and a lack of resources, and turning taxpayer dollars into blood money with its endless wars, drone strikes and mounting death tolls.

Clearly, our national priorities are in desperate need of an overhauling.

As I make clear in my book Battlefield America: The War on the American People and in its fictional counterpart The Erik Blair Diaries, war is the enemy of freedom.

As long as America’s politicians continue to involve us in wars that bankrupt the nation, jeopardize our servicemen and women, increase the chances of terrorism and blowback domestically and push the nation that much closer to eventual collapse, “we the people” will find ourselves in a perpetual state of tyranny.

Sunny Isles Beach Community Spotlight: Tomer Shaked

Valuing and cherishing the diversity in our community is important for Sunny Isles Beach resident, Tomer Shaked. The 17year-old high school senior has lived in Sunny Isles Beach his entire life and dedicates his time to volunteering and helping the younger generation through academic and personal development.

In middle school, Tomer began working with Rabbi Amar at his local Chabad by organizing any special event the Chabad hosted throughout the year. When he entered high school a few years later, Tomer switched gears and started working with the Rabbi by helping younger people overcome addictions.

“I really do feel like I’m making

a change,” says Shaked. “I used to have that problem myself with gaming and every single time I do that with someone else, I feel like I’m saving them from something I had to endure for many years.”

Tomer hopes that his handson work is enhancing the quality of people’s lives. He plans to continue his work helping the community by becoming a civil litigator after attending college and law school. Last year he was even able to attend a law school for a full semester where he worked directly with law school professors arguing Supreme Court cases against a panel of judges.

Tomer views getting involved in the community as an obligation, especially for the younger

generations. Whether it’s going out and cleaning up the environment or spreading awareness about an important topic in the world, he is passionate about making a difference.

“I’m very passionate about the younger people in the community as they have by far the most potential,” Tomer explains.

“In the future, they are going to be the ones taking the big positions and making a big impact in our community.”

Tomer has some advice for his younger peers: “Trying new things will open opportunities. I really do feel like if you take that step into the unknown, there’s a lot waiting for you.”

As a youth leader in the Sunny Isles Beach community, Tomer has a bright future ahead.

He is appreciative of the acknowledgement his work is getting in the community and is excited about all the work younger people are doing and going to do in the future.

reasonable cost. During the open enrollment period, MA recipients will have the opportunity to revisit their current plan and decide whether or not it is the right plan for them. As our healthcare needs change over time, the services needed to best care for ourselves, and our loved ones, may need to be revisited. Open enrollment is the time to start looking at what health plans are available, as well as the services, costs, and copays associated with these plans. For recipients interested in switching back to original Medicare, or “Straight Medicare,” plans tend to only cover medical expenses and typically do not entitle an insured to dental, eyeglass, hearing aids, or other benefits. If a “straight Medicare” insured wants dental benefits, they would have to purchase a separate policy which then adds additional expense to the insured. Whereas, some Medicare Advantage plans not only include medical coverage, but also include dental coverage as well as other benefits as part of the package. CarePlus Medicare Advantage plans, as an example, will include medical coverage, but may also include routine dental, vision,

and hearing coverage as well as provide a monthly allowance for over-the-counter medicines. Another benefit to some of these Medicare Advantage plans is that they may offer $0 copays for primary care and specialist visits. Knowing which plan is best for you is important to ensure you have the proper coverages for your healthcare needs and at a price that is affordable. While some folks choose to stay with their current plan, there are those that may realize their current plan is not giving them the coverage they need at the price they can afford. Doing your due diligence during open enrollment is very important to ensuring you are maximizing your benefits and getting the most for your money.

Hallandale Medical Center accepts a wide range of plans including most major insurance plans. As Hallandale Medical Center offers geriatric medicine they work hard to try and contract with most Medicare Advantage plans, including CarePlus and Humana Medicare Advantage plans. Since Hallandale Medical Center offers primary care, behavioral health, podiatry, and dental services, they try to contract with insurers to allow their patients to utilize all the services under one roof.

According to

Chief Operating Officer at Hallandale Medical Center, “we do our best to ensure that our

patients can utilize all our services under the roof. For example, our CarePlus and Humana Medicare Advantage patients have access to medical, dental, and behavioral health services to ensure we are doing our best at providing a 360degree approach to their healthcare.” This year, some CarePlus and Humana Medicare Advantage plans will offer a wide array of benefits including dental crowns, root canal, complete or partial dentures, as well as many other services all at a $0 copay to their insureds. While Hallandale Medical Center accepts Medicare Advantage Health Maintenance Organization (HMO) plans, they also accept Preferred Provider Organization (PPO) plans.

The Stellar team at Hallandale Medical Center prides itself on offering top tier medical services, many of which may be covered under your current or prospective MA plan. If you are in need of a crown, the dental team can surely assist you. Dental crowns are one of the most common procedures and are necessary to restore weakened, broken, or decayed teeth back to function.

The process of getting a crown is relatively simple. Over the course of a few appointments your dentist will treat your tooth, reshape, and size it so it may be used as an anchor for the crown. After being fitted for the crown, you can expect it to arrive within a couple of weeks. You can request a crown evaluation through the website or you can call the clinic directly and speak to a team member.

Another common procedure the dentists at Hallandale Medical Center can assist you with is a root canal. Dentists perform over 15 million root canals a year for patients suffering from tooth sensitivity, sore or swollen gums, infections, and fractured or broken teeth. A root canal generally involves your dentist cleaning out the inside of your tooth and sealing it in a manner similar to getting a filling.

The dental experts at Hallandale Medical Center are trained to offer these advanced procedures.

You can also come to rely on the dental experts at Hallandale Medical Center to provide you with the best dentures in South Florida. With over 60 percent of

American adults missing one or more teeth, and 10 percent missing all of their teeth, dentures offer a wonderful solution to this issue. If you are one of the many folks who suffer from missing teeth a fully customized partial or full denture can help restore tooth function and also create a beautiful natural-looking smile. For more information you can schedule a consultation with one of Hallandale Medical Centers premier dentists. However, these are just a few of the dental services provided. At Hallandale Medical Center you can also come in for teeth whitening, dental cleaning, and Invisalign®. While Medicare Advantage plans continue to grow in popularity it is important to do your research to find the plan that fits your needs and budget, for you and your family. To better serve our patients, and assist them in maneuvering the Medicare landscape, Hallandale Medical Center helps patients get in contact with licensed insurance agents who can answer any questions they may have regarding the different plans available to them.

We hope this information helps you make the right choices during the Medicare Open Enrollment period For additional information on Medicare, or Medicare Advantage plans, you can call: 1-800-Medicare, or visit Hallandale Medical Center where we will help you get in touch with a licensed insurance agent. City Of Hollywood Launches Turtle-Friendly Lighting Recognition Program

This week marks the beginning of the 2023 Sea Turtle Nesting Season, which takes place every year from March 1st through October 31st. During this time, the City Of Hollywood’s “Turtle Friendly Lighting Ordinance” is in effect, when the City’s Hatchlings are attracted to light. On undeveloped beaches, the ocean horizon is lighter than the land so new hatchlings head toward the water. In an urban beach environment, artificial light from buildings can disorient hatchlings and attract them away from the ocean. Turtle friendly lighting can minimize disorientation and make Hollywood Beach more hospitable to these endangered species.

The Broward County Sea Turtle Conservation Program (BCSTCP) documented 3,650

nests on the County’s 24-mile coastline (including the Dr. Von D. Mizell-Eula Johnson State Park) in 2022. That’s a record for our area, and Hollywood’s sandy beach plays an important role in that success. Our beach is the desired nesting habitat for three species of endangered sea turtles: leatherbacks, loggerheads and greens. It is vital that everyone does their part to ensure future successful nesting seasons on Hollywood Beach.

Sea Turtle Friendly Lighting Lighting near the beach should be “sea turtle-friendly” and follow these three criteria established by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC): Keep it low: Fixtures should be mounted as low as possible to achieve their pur-

pose and their bulbs should produce the lowest lumens (light output) necessary for the task. In addition to low lumens, keep the fixture shielded, the bulb, lamp or glowing lens should be shielded from the beach and the interior lights should not be visible from the beach. If you live near the beach, close your curtains, shades and blinds after sunset.

One item you may not be aware of is, wavelength, no we aren’t talking about the length of the ocean waves here. They are talking about the output, the fixtures/bulbs must produce long wavelength light (560 nm or longer) without filters, gels or lenses. Amber and red LEDs are good examples of these types of light. Also keep in mind that even lights from cell phones can also disturb nesting and hatching sea

turtles. If you visit the beach at night during nesting season, keep your cell phone safely stowed in your pocket or bag.

Turtle Friendly Lighting Recognition Pilot Program

The City Of Hollywood has launched a Turtle Friendly Lighting Recognition Pilot Program. The goal of the program is to increase awareness and compliance with the City’s turtle friendly lighting ordinance by way of recognition of those property owners who are certified compliant.

Hollywood’s turtle friendly lighting ordinance (§108, O2011-07) requires that exterior lights be mounted as low in elevation as possible, shielded so that the light source is not visible from the beach, directed down

and away from the beach and have a low wattage amber or red bulb. To reduce or eliminate the visibility of interior light from the beach, tinted glass or film must be installed on north, east and south facing doors and windows on new developments. Existing buildings can install window and door tint, move light fixtures away from windows, close the blinds and curtains, and turn off all unnecessary lights.

To receive recognition, a property must fully comply with the City’s turtle friendly lighting ordinance (§108, O-2011-07). The certification process can be found at: www.HollywoodFL.org/ TurtleLighting

After the repairs’, State-ofthe-art specialized equipment is used to detect moisture levels in the air, dehumidifiers are placed in the affected area, and a Florida-licensed Mold Inspector will be sent to do a mold inspection. Samples will be taken of the air and mold. The specimens will be sent to their private laboratory for testing. This will determine which type of mold they are dealing with. Some molds are more toxic than others such as black mold, knowing the type, allows for proper precautions to be taken to ensure effective treatment and removal of the mold.

Depending on the severity of the

ness of mold. Titan Restoration Inc. is a full remodeling and restoration company, specializing in kitchen and bath remodels, as well as a wide variety of other services. Throughout this process, Titan Restoration Inc. will be working with your insurance company every step of the way. You should never attempt to remove mold without a licensed professional, it is unsafe, and hazardous to your health. Mold thrives in dark, damp environments such as under the kitchen or bathroom sinks, in unventilated basements, and closed in laundry rooms. It can even be found behind drywall. Because of the heat and humidity which Florida is known for, it provides a perfect environment for mold to thrive. Vigilance is key when it comes to mold remediation. Bleach and paint alone will not eliminate the problem, only hide it, allowing it to grow unseen and

age to your home and health over time. People and pets all respond differently to mold and mildew. For some, it may be watery eyes, itchy throat, cough, or skin irritation. Confusion, disorientation, and even hallucinations can also be signs of mold exposure. For others, exposure to mold can cause very serious, even life-threatening health problems. A City Rich In History

Our Community Is Lucky To Have Raised Many Individuals That Have Put our City on The Map

After living 30 years in Hallandale Beach, I have had the wonderful chance to meet many residents including members from the founding families of our great City. I can say I have spent more time in Hallandale Beach than any other community including my hometown of Levittown, Pennsylvania. So, this is home. Through the years I have met so many wonderful people that were born and raised in Hallandale. I have come to learn that there is plenty of rich history particularly in the Northwest and

Our community is lucky to have raised many individuals that have put our City on the map.

Many of these residents went to Hallandale High and continue to give back to the City. Sadly, one of these residents, Micheal Leon Perkins was laid to rest this Saturday. He was a Mighty Charger.

As a young child and student, he was known for his singing skills that he practiced in Ebenezer Baptist Church. He competed in many talent shows at school and at Dixie Park where he held his first job at 13 as a park aid. Dixie Park is now known as Peter Bluesten Park. While he was known to be a singer, everyone figured he would be an R&B star. God had other plans for him.

In 1979 right after high school

Mike found a love of boxing. In 1981 he won the Golden Gloves Heavyweight Championship. This opened many doors for him. He relocated to New York City, he trained with and competed with some of the best. At one of his first professional fights, which he

lost, he met Sugar Ray Leonard.. After the fight Sugar Ray said to him, “even though you lost you came out smokin.” Since then, the name stuck and he became “Smokin” Mike Perkins.

Mike traveled the world and fought locally too. He was the Main Event in many bouts including: The Diplomat, Madison Square Garden, Bermuda, Nassau, Atlantic City and the United Kingdom, just to name a few. Sadly, his trainer suddenly passed away which changed Mike’s course.

In 1993, Mike came back to Hallandale and married his longtime girlfriend Denise Brown. He continued to train with the hopes of getting back in the ring. He worked many jobs and landed one with North Construction where sadly he was injured and lost mobility. It was then he received the great news that Denise was pregnant and then Mike Jr. was born.

Mike was a true pillar of our community. He mentored and continued to be an inspiration to

everyone. He was always singing and joking. He was not just a Champ in the Ring, he was our hometown hero. I wish his family peace and love during this sad time.

As life would have it, Saturday started out with more history. We held the groundbreaking for Curci Village. Curci Village is where the original 1906 home of the Curci Family was built and remains today. They were one of the original founding families of Hallandale. The Curci Home was restored and dedicated on the National Registry. The home is set up for tours and has many artifacts that give visitors a feel for what life was like back when Hallandale was just in its infancy.

While the home was opened a few years back only the first floor was accessible. The groundbreaking is to kick off the completion of the surrounding grounds and the addition of an exterior elevator so visitors can access the second floor. The second floor contains many his-

The Aventura International Film Series continues with EO, a current Oscar nominee for Best International Feature Film, on Tuesday, March 7th, 2023 at 7:30 p.m.

A gray donkey with melancholic eyes and a curious spirit, EO begins his life as a circus performer before escaping on a trek across the Polish and Italian countryside in a journey marked by cruelty and kindness in equal measure. During his travels, EO is both helped and hindered by a cast of characters including a young Italian priest (Lorenzo Zurzolo), a Countess (Isabelle Huppert) and a rowdy Polish soccer team.

Legendary filmmaker Jerzy Skolimowski (Deep End, Moonlighting) directs one of his most free and visually inventive films yet, placing the viewer directly in the heart and mind of the fourlegged protagonist as he observes the follies and triumphs of humankind.

The New York Times film review noted, “…No movie that I’ve seen this year has moved me as deeply, made me feel as optimistic about cinema or engaged me with such intellectual vigor as ‘EO,’ whose octogenarian genius auteur and all the donkeys who play EO — Hola, Tako, Marietta, Ettore, Rocco and Mela — deserve all the love and the carrots, too.”

The film was the winner of the 2022 Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival. Not Rated, the film is presented in Polish, Italian, French and Spanish with English subtitles.

Admired film expert Shelly Isaacs curates the series and hosts each film with an introduction and a post-screening discussion. Isaacs is known for his Cafe Cinematheque programs at many venues throughout South Florida. He enjoyed a 30-plus year career as a creative director/ writer specializing in creating print ads, commercials and trailers for feature films, TV and radio studios. He teaches foreignlanguage film appreciation in the Life Long Learning Society at FAU and FIU. In 2009, Isaacs launched Cinematheque at Sea and served as the film expert for Celebrity Cruise Lines at The Cannes International Film Festival.

The Aventura International Film Series continues with UTAMA on April 4th, 2023 and Broker on May 16th, 2023. Screenings are general admission with the lobby doors opening at 6:30 p.m. and the auditorium at 7:00 p.m. Tickets are $12.

In addition there will be a large patio, gazebo, decorative water fountain to replace the original one and new fencing. The home truly is a gem. The construction is scheduled to be completed within 10 months. Once completed the location will be a wonderful spot for visiting, family gatherings, events and weddings. If you have a passion for history we are looking for volunteers for our Historical Committee. This weekend was “Food and Groove” in Hallandale Beach. Our CRA Staff and the many volunteers outdid themselves this year. The event was sold out with over 1,600 attendees. There was a fabulous dance band and a DJ that kept the party hopping. The food from our many local restaurants was amazing. Special thanks go out to FIU and SOBEWFF for making us part of this amazing event for another year. Also, I would like to thank Gulfstream Park for opening Pegasus Park, which is a wonderful event space.

As always, I am available for your questions, concerns, and ideas to help make our City a better place. Please feel free to reach out to me at my office: (954) 457-1318. On my Cell/Text at: (954) 632-5700. Or email me at: jcooper@cohb.org

Tips for Fostering Dogs

More animals are staying in shelters now than before the pandemic, according to a report from Shelter Animals Count, and just over half (53%) of dogs in shelters are adopted. However, the report also found that fostering dogs is a proven way to help pets find new homes.

For those looking to support rescue dogs in need, the PEDIGREE® brand and its FOSTERVERSE™ program offer tips for a positive fostering experience and show how you can help end pet homelessness. To learn more and get involved, visit Pedigree.com/Fosterverse.

Learn the Dog’s Background

Every dog has a unique personality and set of needs, which is why it’s important to learn as much as you can before fostering a dog. Try to gather detailed information from the rescue organization or animal shelter before bringing the dog home, including age, breed, health conditions, dietary needs, energy level and even likes and dislikes. Learning about your foster dog’s background ahead of time can

help you prepare and ensure a smooth transition to your home.

Prepare Your Household

Spend time making your home as dog-friendly and safe as possible by keeping electronics, cleaning supplies, sharp objects and other potentially dangerous items out of the way. This may mean taking a look at items in your home from the dog’s eye level to see what might be within reach. If you will be introducing a foster dog to other pets in your household, try to provide ample space to allow for slow introductions. Also consider looking for ways to designate spaces and belongings (like beds) between your pets so they can have comfortable places to retreat and rest.

Train for Eventual Adoption

Once your foster dog has adjusted to the new environment, consider gradually implementing routines. These routines may include activities like obedience training, physical exercise, house training and crate training. Teaching your foster pup good

habits in preparation for adoption can increase the likelihood of finding a forever home.

Market Your Foster Dog

Spread the word in your community in person and on social media that you are fostering and helping find a forever home for your four-legged friend. A survey from AdoptAPet.com revealed the simple act of sharing information on social media about adoptable pets at local shelters can save a pet’s life, with 8 out of 10 (84%) organizations reporting that sharing pet content online increases the likelihood of pets being adopted. Help get the word out and show your community members why they should consider adopting your foster pup.

Try Virtual Fostering

While many people might want to foster a pup, there are many factors that may not allow them to foster pets in real life. That’s why the PEDIGREE brand

is bringing fostering opportunities to the Metaverse for anyone who owns a digital property in Decentraland, offering a new platform for dog adoption. Users may interact with dogs they meet in the FOSTERVERSE program and learn about their backgrounds and adoption status, as well as ways to support dogs in need across the country. Dog lovers can choose to adopt a dog they meet virtually through AdoptAPet.com or donate to PEDIGREE Foundation to help similar adoptable pets in need across the country.

Looking To Adopt If you are looking to adopt a pet the Humane Society of Broward County is the place to visit. Here are a couple of possible family members for you to go see, you just might find the love of your life.

Drogo (ID A662920) would love to go home with you! This three-year-old shepherd mix sadly was given up because his

family is moving and could not take him along. He is crate trained and enjoys going for walks. Drogo is very friendly and may jump up out of excitement when you come to meet him. An active family with kids would be ideal. If you have another dog at home, a meet and greet would be great to see if they get along. His former family said he is playful with other dogs and curious about cats. Tough toys would be recommended for him.

Can Cleopatra (ID A639300) be part of your family? This regal beauty is 6 years old and was abandoned at the shelter. The volunteers say she loves to be pet and enjoys treats. She is super sweet and gets along with other felines. Thanks to a cat lover, her adoption fee has been sponsored.

To meet Drogo or any of the other pets at the Humane Society of Broward County, visit www.humanebroward.com to complete the pre-adoption application and then stop by. The adoption kennels open daily at 11:00 a.m. and the shelter is located at 2070 Griffin Road, Fort Lauderdale – a block west of I95. If you have questions call 954989-3977 ext. 6.
