There is an Interactive Listening Session scheduled for Tuesday, March 10, 2020 from 6:00 - 8:00 pm at the Sunny Isles Beach Government Center in the first floor meeting room, 18070 Collins Avenue in Sunny Isles Beach. The Interactive Listening Session is your opportunity to share input on how you think the Town Center North Overlay should be developed. At the session you will be able to participate in an interactive listening session involving short informal presentations and discussions about how you envision the new Town Center North Overlay. Stop by between 6:00 and 8:00 pm to let your voice be heard.

Light refreshments will be provided. RSVP on the City of Sunny Isles Beach website at www.sibfl.net. This is a public session and RSVPs are not required; they just help staff get a headcount for planning purposes.

CORONAVIRUS What You Should Know CDC - Centers For Disease Control The current understanding about how the virus that causes coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) spreads is largely based on what is known about similar coronaviruses. COVID-19 is a new disease and there is more to learn about how it spreads, the severity of illness it causes, and to what extent it may spread in the United States.

As of this week Florida has 3 presumptive positive COVID19 cases: two adult residents of Hillsborough County and one adult resident of Manatee County. Both individuals are isolated and being appropriately

cared for. Now is not a time for panic, it is a time for education, and action to protect yourself and to limit the possible spread.

Person-To-Person Spread The virus is thought to spread mainly from person-to-person, between people who are in close contact with one another (within about 6 feet). It is thought to spread mainly through respiratory droplets produced when an infected person coughs or sneezes. These droplets can land in the mouths or noses of people who are nearby or possibly be inhaled into the lungs.

Spread From Contact With Infected Surfaces or Objects It may be possible that a person can get COVID-19 by touching a surface or object that has the virus on it and then touching their own mouth, nose, or possibly their eyes, but this is not thought to be the main way the virus spreads.

Hallandale Beach’s Schools: Are Making Great Strides in Educating Our Children.

All our schools are operated by the Broward County School Board or privately run. Our public schools are Gulfstream Academy K-8, Hallandale High School, and Lanier James. Since being your mayor, our city has always had a strong partnership with our schools and that tradition has continued.

On the third Wednesday of every month we take time to recognize the “Student Citizens of the Month” at a City Hall Ceremony. After the recognitions we invite the Principals to update the public and the commission on their activities.

Gulfstream was happy to announce that they are under construction for much needed upgrades to their older north campus building. Gulfstream is a K8 campus that helped bring a middle school back to our city. This means our children can have a seamless education right within our four-square miles.

15 years ago, the school board was going to build additions to the old elementary school and close some roads rather than build a brand-new school for our kids. To me this was unacceptable. Our eastern schools had been neglected for such a long time, it was time to lobby the school board to do the right thing.

They owned a vacant lot that was adjacent to Hallandale Adult Community Center, so we worked to have them build a brand-new elementary school. After the school was built the adult center was moved out west. This

Children are learning how to apply their knowledge and skills in science tech labs. They are also learning to code. The school also offers many after school programs.

Principal Pappas has been doing an amazing job.

Our Hallandale High School also has been excelling in academics.

Many of the graduating seniors have been signing with colleges. In addition to their basic education, their magnet programs have many skill paths.

Unfortunately, the flu often strikes quickly and without warning, potentially leading to severe and sometimes life-threatening health problems. It’s an infectious disease that must be taken seriously - especially by those who are most vulnerable.

Take the flu seriously: A challenge to older Americans (BPT) - Alice Vaught skipped her flu shot one season. That was the year she got the flu.

“I felt like I was dying. Within a couple hours I was unable to move. It came on so quickly, and I wasn’t aware of how severe it was.”

Unfortunately, the flu often strikes quickly and without warning, potentially leading to severe and sometimes life-threatening health problems. It’s an infectious disease that must be taken seriously - especially by those who are most vulnerable.

Flu can take a terrible toll Anyone can get the flu.

However, some people have an increased risk of flu and flurelated complications, including young children, pregnant women, adults 50 years of age and older, and people living with chronic health conditions, such as lung or heart disease, diabetes and cancer. This com-

prises a significant number of people. In fact, 70 percent of adults ages 50 to 64 have at least one chronic illness according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Brian Pelletier had type 2 diabetes, a severe lung disease and other chronic health conditions when the flu landed him in the hospital at the age of 52. “It was the first time I was really sick in over a decade. My medication that I was taking had been managing everything just fine, and my conditions didn’t slow me down too much,” said Pelletier. “I was active, but that bout with the flu really set me back.”

Flu can disrupt everyday life The CDC estimates that the flu virus causes between 9 million and 49 million flu-related illnesses each year. It can worsen symptoms of respiratory disorders, such as asthma and

chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Vaught is one of many who have caught the flu while living with asthma.

“Everything was worse when I got the flu, especially my asthma. I remember losing 7 or 8 pounds and could barely lift my head,” she said.

JoJo O’Neal, a radio personality and fitness advocate who lives with asthma, had to stop everything when she was struck with the flu twice in one season.

She took several days off work, rescheduled important meetings and missed out on personal commitments. “It felt like a truck ran over me,” said O’Neal. “It took over 10 days for me to finally feel better. I even had to cancel a meeting with the asthma support group I facilitate!”

It’s not too late to vaccinate Vaccination is the best way to help protect against the flu.

Health officials recommend all people ages 6 months and older, with rare exception, get vaccinated each year. This is particularly important for adults 50 years of age and older. That’s why the American Lung Association launched the MyShot campaign in collaboration with Sanofi Pasteur. The initiative empowers older adults to ask their healthcare providers about which flu shot options may help offer a greater level of protection against the flu based on their age and chronic health conditions.

It’s not too late to get your shot. Vaccination throughout the fall and winter - and even into the spring - can help protect against the flu while the virus is circulating.

Poor Apollo (ID 627605) hasn’t had the best life. He was adopted as a little pup two years ago from another shelter and lived his life in the backyard.

Fortunately the landlord felt this was not a good life for a dog and told the owner he needed to find Apollo another place to live.

Apollo likes to play with rope toys and tennis balls. He also enjoys being with people and likes the beach. If you have another dog at home, a slow introduction would be recommended.

No time…that’s why 1-1/2 year old Chitty (ID 627843) was given up. This curious fellow is friendly, loves to play with cat toys and doesn’t mind being picked up. He likes to couch surf and hop up on the furniture so see what is going on. While he hasn’t lived with other pets, we think given some time to settle in Chitty will be the perfect

addition for any animal loving family. For more details call 954-989-3977 ext. 6 Join South Florida’s Largest Dog Walk - Saturday, March 7 The 30th annual VCA Walk for the Animals to benefit the Humane Society of Broward County is March 7, at Huizenga Park in Fort Lauderdale. This year, the event welcomes Honorary Chair, Clinton Kelly, Emmy award-winning co-host of The Chew and TLC’s What Not to Wear and his beloved rescue companion, Mary, to the walk.

The walk is the HSBC’s largest fundraiser with thousands of walkers, both two and fourlegged, strolling the 1.2 mile path through Fort Lauderdale.

Registration opens at 8 a.m. and the walk starts at 10 a.m. Last year more than $615,000 was raised and with your help even

more can raised for the shelter’s programs and services.

The more you raise, the more goodies you earn and you don’t have to have a pet to participate.

They Need Your Assistance to Help the Animals in Their Care The Humane Society of Broward County has several volunteer opportunities currently available and is hoping you can help, especially with the dogs.

Current openings include: Animal Care for dogs – cleaning and feeding, Dog Walking, and Dog Pal – spending quiet time with the dogs. Other openings available are Clinic Assistant – prepare surgery packs, Education Outreach, Foster Care for pets too young for adoption or who need to recuperate from a medical procedure, Adoption Ambassador – take an adult dog or cat into your home and help them find their forever home, Kennel Guides and Customer Service Assistant – help with

adoptions and sending animals home.

To volunteer you must be 18 years of age and complete a criminal background check.
