No glasses for the first time in 50 years Dave Forchin can look back at his childhood in Jamaica now and laugh. But it wasn't funny when he couldn't see what the teacher was writing.

The 62-year-old south Florida resident remembers it like it was yesterday, attending primary school at the age of 12 and not being able to see.

"That was when I went to the eye doctor and found out that I needed glasses to see and be able to do better in school," Forchin recalled. For the next 50 years, I had to wear glasses to see since I was very near sighted."

What’s the primary and most effective use for Mini Dental Implants?

There are approximately 50 million people in the United States who are “edentulous” (literally meaning lacking teeth) who struggle daily with their dentures. A majority suffer a great deal of discomfort as a result of loose or ill-fitting dentures.

Many denture wearers simply withdraw from any type of social engagement as a result of being compelled to wear them. Moreover, it’s not uncommon for family members to complain about a denture wearer’s disagreeable breath as a result of food being trapped and decaying under their dentures. Success-ful placement of the Mini Dental Implant addresses and solves all of these social and practical problems.

Denture patients all over the world have experienced relief from loose or ill-fitting dentures. Uniquely, the MDI can be utilized to stabilize a denture in a couple of hours, with the patient leaving the clinic with a stabilized denture.

How specifically can Mini Dental Implants help denture wearers? The standard insertion protocol for mini dental implants calls for four of them to be gently screwed into the front of a patient’s lower jaw. This is a relatively painless procedure that can be performed under a mild anesthesia.

Hallandale Beach State of the City - Part 2: Water and wastewater managed with new technology * SECOND OF A THREE-PART SERIES

By Mayor Joy Cooper HALLANDALE BEACH - Transportation is not the only municipal infrastructure being impacted by technology.

This year. Water, wastewater and storm water are all being managed with new technology.

We are going to begin the first phase of smart metering installation.

These meters will be read wirelessly and be linked to our city. Users will be able to check their usage online. Just like the new FPL meters.

Just think, you leave the house believing everything is off. You check to see your usage at the end of the day and find out there must be a leak. You know to call a plumber and get it fixed.

You save money. We all save money because we are not wasting water.

Water is not wasted, going down the drain where it needs to be treated, saving even more money. This system will be rolled out over two years in partnership with Siemens.

The cost of saving will help to keep our rates lower, protect our natural resources and save everyone money.

Many residents and business owners may not realize but our city has almost 200 cameras installed on city properties and parks throughout the city. These cameras are currently

linked to our police department. Camera technology has and will continue to have a positive impact on the way all cities protect their communities.

Many of you know, I am a strong advocate for cameras as a policing tool. Currently, like many cities we are evaluating the use of police body cameras. The jury is still out on how communities are implementing this technology, privacy issues, data retention issues and when a camera is on or off, all issues still needed to be worked out.

I am more interested in a dialogue that began before body cameras, covering our 4.4 square miles with a citywide camera system. The camera system envisioned would be linked to our brand new Fire Station and training facility center that can house a monitoring system. This year, I hope our commission takes the next step to embrace this technology and more importantly, invest in enhancing our security. It is not just about body cameras, it is about adding eyes to our community. We may not be able to afford a police officer on every corner, but a camera could be an added tool to stop and solve crimes.

I mentioned water, waste water and storm water earlier. These

services combined are vital basic city services.

Having safe drinking water and protecting our environmental resources is also part of our mission. How we manage water is critical to our sustainability, both environmental and financially. The costs to manage the process and deliver water are always increasing. These increases are due to many variables.

As a member of many water advisory boards, I have been an advocate for making sure that before the EPA adds additional regulations, they take into consideration, the carbon footprint of the energy intensive treatment processes and utility costs to the end users.

I have been working with a group of mayors and we have secured the EPAs commitment to utilizing cost metrics when establishing new rules and during the integrated planning process. Our community and businesses cannot continue shouldering the cost of unfunded mandates. We are very close to addressing the mandate passed down to eliminate the ocean outfalls from waste water treatment.

Utilizing our new Northeast drainage infrastructure, engineers are working with the department of environmental protection on utilizing it for a project

to recharge water into the ground while backstopping saltwater intrusion. It is a very exciting and cost saving possibility.

As an elected official, I share the same goal as any business leader, cutting costs. The last thing anyone wants to do is raise prices. In our case, it is raising fees and taxes. I have to say on the flip side, I also will stand up and defend maintaining our level of service and quality of life. I would like to say “Do we want to be the cheapest place to live or the best place to live?”

We cannot lose sight that 25% of our residents are living on $15,000 dollars a year right here in Hallandale Beach. Census data and economic trends show that our city has similar challenges that cities are facing around the country. To help individuals rise above poverty, we pay a livable wage as a city. We can advocate for living wages, but have little control over private industry salaries.

We can help the financially the challenged in our city by ensuring access to affordable housing, affordable service and transposition alternatives to help offset their cost of living.

Wage gaps are increasing and our commission remains keenly focused on the quality of life for “all residents.”

We have been address-

ing job growth through our strategic plan. Economic vitality is critical to our success. All of you understand as business owners, you are the backbone of our country. The energy of the Entrepreneur, small business and Main Street are economic engines. Progress Is Happening Here!

We recently held our Community Redevelopment Agencies Vision session. Our CRA has been very successful this year too. Our business incentive programs have become so successful, we recently had to do a budget transfer to replenish the fund to meet demands. Our CRA has programs that can help enhance your business.

Foster Dixie Gate Way project is almost ready to begin. This mixed use includes: townhouses, rental apartments and commercial opportunities. Last week we just approved moving forward in development for the first Medical Center in the Palms Areas of our city. You can also drive along Hallandale Beach Boulevard and Federal Highway, beatification, business enhancements and expansion is taking place. Again real tangible results.

Our consultants are compiling a complete streets assessment.

This assessment will include not just sidewalks,

bike lanes and transit elements. The assessment includes drainage and street lighting. We will be evaluating their report during the budget process to strategically plan financing opportunities to make complete streets a reality. We want to ensure that every resident has access to a safe, walkable city.

As a mayor, I envision a city that is inclusive with opportunities for everyone. A place to call home, raise a family, have your business and yes, a place to play! Our city parks have become award winning. We have won the honor of being named a Playful City USA for two consecutive years and our Joe Scavo Park has been showcased by the Florida Recreation Association.

No glasses for the first time in 50 years Braverman From Page 1A –––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– life in banking, Forchin never had a serious problem with his vision - until three years ago when a visit to his family optometrist, Dr. David Popper at Eyelooks in Miramar, revealed cataracts. In addition, Dr Popper determined that Mr. Forchin would not be able to drive unless he underwent cataract surgery - and that's where things started to get better.

Dr. Popper's discovery meant a trip to meet Dr. Stanley Braverman and his well respected team at the Braverman Eye Center in Hallandale Beach.

While he was apprehensive at first, the moment he met everyone, his fears were put aside.

"Any time you have any surgery with your eyes, anyone would wonder what everything was going to be like," Forchin said. "That's why when I met Dr. Braverman and we talked over the procedure, I left the office with a great feeling."

As time got closer to the point where Forchin wouldn't be able to see without the procedure, he looked forward to finally not having to rely on glasses and seeing perfect for the first time in over 50 years.

"I remember talking about having to have both eyes done," Forchin explained. "We scheduled the first one (right eye) back on December 12th of last year. Things went so well, we scheduled the cataract surgery on the left eye on January 20th."

In the weeks and months following the surgery, Forchin admits that anyone needing to have this done, they should go ahead and get it scheduled.

His life has never been better - and not having to wear glasses is something that he can simply not explain.

From the first visit and consultation to the actual surgeries, Forchin simply cannot speak highly enough about Dr. Braverman, the staff and the experience.

"It's simply the most amazing thing that I have ever done," Forchin said.

"No pain, a day to recover and seeing better every day. What more could I have hoped for?"

From that 12-year-old who started wearing glasses - to an adult that had to wear thick lenses to see, Dave Forchin is enjoying life more than ever!

WHAT ARE CATARACTS A cataract is formed when the natural lens of the eye, responsible for focusing light and producing sharp images, becomes cloudy and hardens, resulting in a loss of visual function. The lens of the eye is clear at birth but is one of the first parts of the body to show the effects of aging. A cataract is painless and usually develops gradually over several months or years. The onset of a cataract in one or both eyes may cause decreased night vision, impaired depth perception, and increased color distortion.

Cataracts are the leading cause of vision loss among adults age 55 and older. In fact, poor vision from cataracts affects 60 percent of all adults over age 60. However, cataracts also can result from injury, heredity, or medications, so they can affect people of all ages.

Understanding that no two conditions or patients are the same, Dr. Braverman analyzes the patient’s symptoms, performs a comprehensive eye exam, and may test for glare disability and contrast sensitivity before making a diagnosis. The final decision to proceed with the surgery belongs to the patient.

Your optometrist or Dr. Braverman may prescribe glasses, medication or surgery depending on your symptoms, complaints and age. Usually surgery will not be recommended until glasses no longer work to make you visually happy. In the case of clear lensectomy surgery, the patient cosmetically wants to get rid of their glasses, but they are out of the LASIK treatment range.

CATARACT SURGERY: What to expect Thanks to new advancements, this is a great time to have cataract surgery.

Your eye is like a camera. It has photographic paper(the retina), and a camera lens. Two excellent options exist for cataract surgery. The choice is yours. Traditional Cataract Surgery is the removal of your cloudy natural camera lens, which is usually dissolved using high frequency ultrasound through a small (less than 3 millimeter) opening. IRISH – FOR THE DAY!

Enjoy some outstanding food and drink for St. Patrick’s Day While St. Patrick’s Day is usually reserved for March 17th, the festive holiday finds its way being hosted for a week in some areas.

Great food, drink and the opportunity to let loose is what truly surrounds a time where eating is almost as fun as the drinking and dancing. Do you have anything planned?

How about one of these dishes!

IRISH COFFEE 2 teaspoons sugar, or to taste 2/3 cup hot brewed coffee 2 tablespoons Irish whiskey whipped cream, sweetened if desired Combine first 3 ingredients; top each cup with a generous dollop of whipped cream.

SPICED SODA BREAD 3 cups raisins 2 cups water 3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour 2 teaspoons baking soda 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon 1 teaspoon ground nutmeg 1 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon allspice 1/2 cup butter

1 1/2 cups sugar 3 eggs, beaten 1 cup liquid from soaking raisins In a saucepan, combine raisins and water; bring to a boil. Cover and simmer over low heat for 15 minutes; drain and reserve 1 cup of liquid (if not enough liquid left, add a little water to make 1 cup).

CORNED BEEF AND CABBAGE 1 corned beef brisket, about 4 pounds 1 small bay leaf 6 peppercorns 2 to 3 rutabagas, cut in chunks 1 pound carrots, or about 8 to 10, trimmed, scraped, and left whole 12 small whole onions, peeled 6 medium potatoes, peeled 1 medium head of cabbage, cut in wedges Place meat in a deep stock pot or kettle; cover with water. Add bay leaf and peppercorns.

Bring to a boil; skim off foam. Reduce heat, cover, and simmer for 3 hours.

Add vegetables; simmer for about 45 minutes longer, or until vegetables and meat are tender.

SHEPHERD'S PIE 2 cups cooked chopped meat 1 tablespoon finely chopped onion 2 cups gravy salt and pepper 2 cups mashed potato, prepared with milk and seasonings as desired salt and pepper 1/8 teaspoon paprika 1 tablespoon butter Combine meat, gravy, and chopped onion; season with salt and pepper to taste. Line the bottom of a buttered baking dish with a layer of half of the seasoned mashed potatoes. Add meat mixture then cover with remaining mashed potatoes.

Or, meat and gravy can be put in the baking dish first then topped with all of the mashed potatoes. Dot mashed potato topping with butter, sprinkle with salt, pepper, and paprika, then bake for about 30 minutes at 400°, or until potato topping is browned and the Shepherd's pie is thoroughly heated.

This shepherd's pie recipe serves 4.

LAMB STEW WITH POTATOES 1 pound boneless

lamb, cut in 1-inch cubes 3 tablespoons flour 2 tablespoons oil 1 envelope dry onion gravy mix 3/4 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder dash pepper 2 cups cold water 4 medium potatoes, peeled, halved, and sliced about 1/2inch thick 1 1/2 cups frozen green beans Toss lamb cubes with flour; brown in a large skillet in hot oil. Drain off excess fat. In a separate bowl, combine gravy mix, salt, garlic powder, pepper and cold water; whisk until smooth.

Add mixture to meat. Cook, stirring occasionally, until mixture thickens and bubbles. Cover and simmer for 30 minutes. Add sliced potatoes and beans.

Return to boiling; reduce heat, cover, and simmer lamb stew for 30 minutes more or until vegetables are tender.

Lamb stew recipe serves 4.

Lightly fry bacon in skillet until crisp; drain. Crumble the bacon and place in a large pot. Pour off most of the bacon grease. Brown sausage in the skillet. Remove and add to the pot with bacon. Soften sliced onions and whole garlic cloves in skillet over medium-low heat, then add to pot along with potatoes and carrots.

Bury the bunch or bag of herbs in the middle of the mixture. Sprinkle with pepper. Cover with cider. Cook 1 1/2 hours over mediumlow heat; do not boil. Garnish with chopped parsley.

IRISH SODA BREAD To make one 8-inch round loaf, you will need: 4 cups all-purpose flour 1 teaspoon baking

Preheat the oven to 425 degrees Fahrenheit. Sift the flour, soda and salt together into a deep mixing bowl. Gradually add 1 cup of buttermilk, mixing with a large spoon until the dough is firm enough to be gathered into a large ball. If the dough crumbles, add some more of the buttermilk, a tablespoon at a time, until the particles adhere.

Place the dough on a lightly floured board, and pat and shape it into a flat circular loaf about 8 inches in diameter and 1 1/2 inches thick. Set the loaf on a floured baking sheet. With the tip of a small knife, cut a 1/2 inch deep cross into the dough, dividing the top of the loaf into quarters.

Bake the bread in the middle of the oven for about 45 minutes, or until the top is golden brown.

Remove from the oven and wrap in a clean cloth and let cool on a wire rack for about 20 minutes.

Stop those irrational thoughts Q…Is there any type of therapy technique you find particularly effective?

A… From my experience, I’d probably have to say cognitive-reconstruction is number one. It is a valuable tool for therapists to employ, particularly for people suffering from low self-esteem, or self-defeating thoughts or behaviors.

Here are some very common types of faulty thinking that therapist see regularly and help their clients cognitively reconstruct.

1. Jumping to conclusions, based on an all or nothing irrational associations… ie..,My last lover was very hurtful…She had bright red hair… therefore; all women with bright red hair will hurt me….

2. Focusing on negative events and attributes, while ignoring positive ones… Relationships stink, they’re just an endless supply of hurt, and broken promises... I’ll never get married…

3. Catastrophizing events and experience… (again lack of a middle ground)…Example: It’s not just that my girlfriend broke up with me, but it’s that I know no one will ever want me again.

4. Inappropriately labeling one’s self or others Example: I’m a loser…, or Pretty women are all gold diggers.

5. Disproportionably blaming ones’ self or others for unsuccessful outcomes (again lacking middle ground) Example: It’s all my fault. I did everything wrong, or it’s all her fault, she did everything wrong.

A proficient cognitive therapist will attempt to re-frame the above irrational thoughts and verbalization to something a bit healthier… Possibly something like this….

1. Hair color is not a measure of whether someone hurt me or not. The way a lover communicates and actively listens gives a much better insight to whether someone gets hurt or not…

2. Love has both ups and downs. Maybe, the next time I will experience more of the ups and less of the downs, especially if I’m determined to work harder at being part of a healthy relationship…

3. Just because my girlfriend broke up with me does not mean I will never find someone to love again. I can learn from what has trespassed, and move on from here 4. I am not a loser. Relationships are not about winning or losing 5. Perhaps we both had some fault to why the relationship didn’t last.

As you can see, cognitive reconstruction is simply helping one to look at things from a different angle…,a healthier self and world view, with more adaptive and functional thinking…It’s really a simple concept, but right to the point, and one that a therapist can use to help a client make significant gains in a relatively short period of time.

Everyone has heard that saying, but unfortunately, breakfast is also often the most forgotten meal of the day. Instead of enjoying a hearty, nutritious breakfast, many people opt for simple alternatives on the go because they believe creating a wellrounded breakfast will take too long. That couldn't be farther from the truth.

To show you just how easy it can be to create a wonderful breakfast, here are a few recipes that will have you reinvisioning the bagel and hitting your busy morning with a little extra spring in your step.

EGGS FLORENTINE BAGELS 2 Thomas' Plain Bagels, split and toasted 2 tablespoons unsalted butter 1 1/2 tablespoons allpurpose flour 1 1/2 cups milk, heated 4 large eggs 1/2 cup fresh baby spinach leaves

1 Thomas' 100% Whole Wheat Bagel Thins bagel 3 egg whites 4 tbsp. black bean hummus (store-bought or homemade) 2 tbsp. low-fat sour cream 4 tbsp. tomato salsa Nonstick cooking oil spray separate teacups and pour into water. Cover skillet and remove from heat. Let eggs sit for about 4 minutes until whites are set. Place bagels on serving plates and top each with 1/4 of spinach, using a slotted spoon top with a poached egg and 1/4 of sauce. Serve immediately.

SMOKED TOMATO, BASIL AND BRIE BAGEL

2 Thomas' bagels, split and toasted 4 oz. warm Brie 1 large tomato, quartered and smoked 2 leaves fresh basil Toast a Thomas' Plain Bagel and set aside. Quarter and smoke one large tomato and set aside.

Top Bagel halves with warm Brie and tomato quarters. Add basil.

DRAWBACKS OF HIRING YOUR OWN AIDE

By Terry Adler, CEO, Always Classic Care This one is the most frequently asked question I am asked: Why should I go through an agency when I can hire my own aide and pay less per hour?

Remember the age-old adage “You get what you pay for”? You may pay less for your aide hourly, but when you hire independently, do you really know what you are getting yourself into?

These are just a few of the complaints that I have heard from patients who contacted us: • Things seem to disappear too often • She didn’t listen to what I wanted • She got so bossy that I felt like I was the employee • With her problems, I felt that I needed to help her with extra money • She kept coming late and leaving early • She was on her cell phone all the time • She was nervous driving to unfamiliar addresses, even to the doctor • She did not cook the way I like and would not listen to my suggestions • She didn’t buy the brands or cuts of meat that I wanted • She didn’t dress appropriately and when we went out, I was embarassed.

With our agency, as with any other legitimate agency, we do not stand for any complaints, NOT ANY. • Our aIdes are professionally trained with documentation and references carefully checked • All aides and nurses have been screened by the FBI with confirmation that they have no criminal records • A registered nurse opens each case to assess the exact needs of the new client • The client and/or family is interviewed for specifications and expectations • Staff carefully matches an aide to the personality and needs of the client • If the match is not perfect, staff will make changes immediately.

You definitely can hire whomever you like.

However, you should consider the following carefully: • How well do you know this person? Can you trust him or her? Are you sure the aide does not have a police record? How do you know?

• Is the aide insured to cover any liability if you should become injured while in their care? By hiring through an agency, you can be certain that liability covering the aide is in place.

• Does your aide have a legal right to work in this country? That translates to a Green Card, Permanent Residency or actual citizenship.

• Will you be paying your share of their Federal taxes? Our agency does. We report and we pay, as good citizens should.

Many people are unaware of their responsibility to IRS when hiring a household employee, or of the aide’s legitimate status to work in the US. Our aides are our employees and we report their earnings and our share to the IRS. Protect yourself by preventing problems. An agency is your safest way to go. Even the home health aides know that, and although they accept statewide standard rates that may be lower than what they could get from the client privately, reputable aides know that by working through reputable agencies, they also are protected and can be steadily employed with respect.

Let the Senior Championships begin • Residents and visitors have prepared for the 2015 Hallandale Beach event

The 2015 Hallandale Beach Senior Championships are under way.

Residents and visitors are lining up for a variety of games active and passive matches.

Among the active games are tennis, table tennis, bowling, billiards, bocce, and miniature golf. The passive games and contests include poker, mahjong, bridge, dominoes and cultural arts (art and photography contest).

Plan kicked off Monday with bowling, billiards and

mahjong. Morning rains forced rescheduling of the

bocce tournament to Thursday morning.
