Scammers Exploit US Census and COVID-19 To Rip Off Floridians
Support Your Local Businesses During COVID-19 A Message From The Hallandale Beach Chamber of Commerce During this crisis many business owners may not know where to turn. In Hallandale Beach, Norma English, CEO/ Executive Director of the Hallandale Beach Chamber of Commerce has advice on how to get the help so many business owners are searching for. Shop Local First - Local businesses often do not have the same resources that larger chains do when it comes to financial assistance and recovering from uncertain times like these. When shopping for goods and services look to our local businesses first. Shop Local, Online - Many retailers have websites where you can buy online. If your favorite local retailers don’t have an online store, many may be willing to take an order over the phone and have it delivered - it never hurts to ask. Order To Go - Our local restaurants offer takeout and delivery options. Services like GrubHub and DoorDash also offer delivery services from a wide variety of local restaurants. Stay Subscribed - If you have an ongoing subscription or membership with your local Chamber of Commerce, your gym, consider keeping it active - even if you’re not going to show up right now. If you own a business with a B2B like a coffee service keep that active too if you can. Many of these small businesses rely on that regular cash flow to keep things open. Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) Loans The program would provide cash-flow assistance through 100 percent federally guaranteed loans to employers who maintain their payroll during this emergency. If employers maintain their payroll, the loans would be forgiven, which would help workers remain employed, as well as help affected small businesses and our economy snap-back quicker after the crisis. PPP has a host of attractive features, such as forgiveness of up to 8 weeks of payroll based on employee retention and salary levels, no SBA fees, and at least six months of deferral with maximum deferrals of up to a year. April 1st was Census Day and Attorney General Ashley Moody issued a Consumer Alert to warn Floridians about scammers using COVID-19 and the mandatory count to steal personal information. An emerging scam involves a false claim that Floridians must respond to the 2020 Census in order to receive a coronavirus stimulus payment. The scam message usually includes a link that directs anyone who clicks on it to a fake website with prompts to provide sensitive personal information. While participating in the Census is mandatory, there is no connection between completing the Census and receiving a stimulus check. Attorney General Ashley Moody said, “Scammers will try anything to steal from consumers, and with the stimulus payments on the way and a mandatory Census count underway, there is a perfect storm of fraud opportunities. Floridians need to stay informed about the Census count and educate themselves about the coronavirus stimulus package, so they will not be easily tricked by scammers trying use the

COVID-19 Business Survival Tool Kit The Hallandale Beach Community Redevelopment Agency and SCORE are happy to assist entrepreneurs and small business owners maintain their business amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Here is a brief list of some of the assistance that is available to help business owners during this crisis. The Small Business Owner’s Guide to the CARES Act The programs and initiatives in the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act that was just passed by Congress are intended to assist business owners with whatever needs they have right now. When implemented, there will be many new resources available for small businesses, as well as certain non-profits and other employers. This guide provides information about the major programs and
initiatives that are available from the Small Business Administration (SBA) to address these needs, as well as some additional tax provisions that are outside the scope of SBA. To keep up to date on when these programs as they become available, please stay in contact with your local Small Business Administration (SBA) District Office, which you can locate at www.sba.com.
