Through the decades, Sonny’s Triangle Restaurant has stood as one of those local businesses that Ms. Morrine Ware and her family have made famous. Much like the iconic Hawkins BBQ, this has been more than just a place to get the best "biscuit" in Florida.

What Sonny's and the Ware family have done since opening back in 1965 is become a huge fiber in the ever-growing Foster Road corridor.

On Monday - with relatives, friends, community leaders and city officials on hand, one of the largest pieces of Hallandale (Beach) history was recognized as N.W. 8th Street was officially changed to MORRINE L. WARE STREET. Because of what Ms. Ware and her family had done for this community, many have been giving back for years.

Commissioner Anthony Sanders grew up in the community and on Sonny's great biscuits.

He attended this event as a huge part of this community. One who has been part of the Ware family for years, and well respected for what he has done as a commissioner and as a vice mayor.

"This is a great honor to see Ms. Morrine's name on that sign," Commissioner Sanders said. "I grew up in this place. We all did - and this such a great feeling for me to see a family who has done so much good for this community get the recognition."

For 82-year-old John Wesley, who grew up in Hallandale Beach and has perhaps watched more growth than anyone who has ever lived here, can recall the tomato fields and wooden bridge across the Intracoastal. He can also go on about Sonny's and how he has been at all four locations they have called home.

"You would come in here during those early years and hear everything that was going on," said Wesley. "This was the place to find out about neighbors and new businesses coming into the northwest section. This is just one of those historic places that every community needs."

Indeed. Over the past 50 years, this iconic dining establishment has been a place where Kory Johnson Sr. and Mike Garvin grew up.

It's where going to school in the morning meant that stop at Sonny's for that biscuit that would hold you right until lunch.

For Johnson, who also has a son, who attends Hallandale High, like he did, Sonny's became part of that family.

They embraced everyone - and received it back.

"This was much more than a restaurant," Johnson said. "We grew up with Ms. Ware's children, so everyone knew everyone. It has always been a place - when I drive around - that I still drop in."

MORRINE L. WARE Ms. Morrine Ware relocated to the City of Hallandale from St. Petersburg in 1963. As a mother of nine children, she was always involved in school activities, church functions and community programs. Ms. Ware baked goods for the school bake sales, church events - and offered prepared meals for family and friends in time of need. Word soon spread of Ms. Ware's great culinary skills.

with her husband in 1965. Taking advantage of the success of the business, she established relationships with the community and community leaders. She used her businesses to give back - with clothing, food drives and other things that helped the community.

Through the years, Ms. Ware became a trusted voice in the northwest section. Remember, when the Broward County School Board considered closing Hallandale High, she organized community leaders to keep the school open.

"Morrine Ware was such an important person in the history of this city," Mayor Cooper pointed out to those who came out on this morning. "The entire family has really made a difference in this community, and that we are all grateful for."

On Dec. 14, 2014, the City received an application requesting Citizen Recognition in the form of a street name co-designation for N.W. 8th Street with Morrine L. Ware. Ms. Ware's passing in September of 2010 continues to leave a void today - and when Mayor Cooper proclaimed September 18, 2010, as “Morinne L. Ware Day” - this longtime resident had finally

Gulfstream Park Total Handle Continues To Climb During Championship & Summer Meets Gulfstream Park’s total handle and field size not only increased during its Championship Meet but total handle during the first month of its summer meet has increased 85 percent over the previous year.

Total handle for its Championship Meet was $704 million, up two percent from last year when total handle was $691 million. The Championship Meet also had an increase in field size from 8.4 during its 2013-2014 meet to 9.5 this winter.

Gulfstream established new standards for Florida Derby day and weekend in March.

Total handle on Florida Derby Day was $27.2 million, up from $26.8 million the previous year, while the total weekend handle of $37.2 million exceeded the previous record set last year of $36 million.

A new standard was also established in the new building with a record on-track Florida Derby Day handle of $3.3 million.

Since the conclusion of the Championship Meet, Gulfstream’s total handle and field size continue to grow over the previous year.

For the month of April, Gulfstream’s total handle was $101.632 million, up $54.819 million or 85.39 percent from last year. Meanwhile, field size in April went up from 7.5 to 8.4.

Ban on Styrofoam has its pros and cons

By Mayor Joy Cooper HALLANDALE BEACH - Last week, I wrote about about our city's proposal to ban Styrofoam on our beaches. After deliberating and conducting further research, I requested the ban be deferred for six months while we implement a robust recycling plan on our beaches. There are pros and cons to every issues. Having Styrofoam, plastic or even paper blowing around our beaches can harm our waters and marine life. Products do not pollute, people do. The question becomes, how do we get people to be more conscientious when it comes to preventing liter?

Our city will be enacting a summer youth employment project that was approved last commission meeting.

For the next six months we will be focused on keeping our beaches clean. The students will also be educating our receipts and visitors on the harm littering does to our environment.

During the second public hearing, on the ordinance, we had a local recycling firm approach us on partnering with this program, we also had Dart Industry address us on the pros and cons of different plastic and paper products.

Contrary to some comments from my colleagues and dismissing these experts,

it needs to be known that they manufacture all different paper and plastic products. A ban on Styrofoam and plastics would add to their bottom line, not detract from it. The price point on “green” paper products is much higher.

Each product brings with it different challenges. The other myth is that Styrofoam cannot be recycled, this is not true. The ideal goal is to keep recyclable products out of landfills.

Another sound bite issue has been the vote to not pass the moratorium for hotels. Many residents thought that the moratorium would mean the end to development. That could not be further from the truth. Whether you are for or against development, property owners have certain rights under land use and zoning codes.

The concept of zoning changes to regulate the number of units of hotels is not practiced in many cities. Many cities address it through the site planning process. One or two have set minimums and one, Hollywood, has a cap only on the barrier island.

Their cap is 150 units per the acre only on the beach. The units are in a pool and can be applied for. Hotels are uniquely done to industry parameters. Small hotels like the one in Dania, Holiday Express is 97 units. Most hote-

liers will not build a hotel under a certain number due to their business model.

If a cap was enacted in Hallandale Beach at the Hollywood number, "The Diplomat Hotel" would be calculated at approximately up to 2200 units. The land use for their parcel is Commercial/Recreational/Passive. Based on CRP, the buildable space on a parcel is 15 % of the over land. On their property, approximately 100 acres.

Mardi Gras also would be looked at in a similar way, they are Commercial/Recreational/A ctive.

On commercial sites, hotels can be utilized without a land use, a good example of this is the old Regency Spa. That parcel is a bit over one acre. As a guideline, I always equated hotel units to residential units in a two to one ratio. One acre may hold up to 50 housing units as per count through the regulations. In my ratio, a hotel would be 100 units per acre. Applying this number to CRP and CRA zoning properties. Even at this level, the Diplomat could have up to 1500 hotel units. Capping hotel units is not a best practice at all. The key is not using a cap, but focus on design and site plans.

Currently, staff works with properties through a process that takes into account all quality

of life impacts. Water, Sanitary Sewer, Drainage, Solid Waste, Landscaping, Safety, School Impacts, Setbacks, right of way regulations, parking transportation and traffic. All of these combined, go into the design of a building.

The cost of construction and impact fees reduce the profitability of a parcel.

Hotel/Condos cannot be built on commercial sites without applying for a land use change or housing units. They automatically have to go to the commission for what is called flex units. The commission may consider this since the traffic on commercial is more intense.

The Regency Spa is another good example to use in this case, rather than 144 hotel units, they were granted housing units.

By default, all of the other items guide what will be built. A property may be able to build up to an amount, this does not mean they will.

After the site plan goes

through the process, it still has to get approval from the commission.

The commission must base an approval or denial based on evidence presented not just, I do not like the building or I am opposed to any or all development.

The most pressing issue is traffic, just because there is traffic does not mean we can deny a development.

Many properties already have built in trips. When an office building is torn down, it does not mean they lose the generated trips. Commercial properties create the most trips. For example, I have an office building that has 100 trips. I build a hotel I on the site, that generates less trips, this means I can build and not pay any impact fees.

Redevelopment is a complex issue. I always tell residents, my background is accounting and business. I have learned all that I know from experience and research. I encourage

all of our residents that are interested in this issue to come to a workshop on Monday at 9 am at city hall. We have asked staff to look at traffic and transportation when it comes to the hotels' best practices. The old model was based on building roads, infrastructure and trips were generated. The current models look at transit and transit oriented development.

Historic Schoolhouse Open House May 16th The City of Hallandale Beach will open it's Historic 1910 school-house this Saturday May 16th from 12pm-3pm for free Historic Board docent led tours.

The first school in Hallandale was built in 1906 by Bethlehem Lutheran Church, but it was destroyed by the 1910 hurricane. Within months of the storm, a second school was constructed. The 1,600-square-foot, tworoom school housed students from elementary to high school.

The building was used by the church and others until it fell into disrepair in 1966. The building was moved to the city's public works compound before later being moved to its present location at 648 NW Second St. The school house will be open for monthly tours. STREET RENAMING Morrine L. Ware, Sonny’s Triangle Restaurant are in the spotlight

The City of Hallandale Beach paid tribute to the late Morrine L. Ware, the woman who made Sonny’s Triangle

Restaurant a landmark for her homemade biscuits, on Monday by renaming a portion of NW 8th Street in her honor.

Mrs. Ware and her husband, Willie, began Sonny’s more than five decades ago and it quickly became a must-stop in the

The City of Hallandale Beach is beginning an effort to address its number one complaint, and will hold a roundtable discussion on transportation planning issues from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., Monday, May 18, at the Cultural Community Center, 410 SE Third St. The round-table discussion is designed for traffic engineers, residents, property owners and interested parties. The City is seeking ideas and input on how to alleviate congestion throughout the City, not just on its major thoroughfares.

The City is undergoing a growth spurt with several major proposed developments on the drawing boards. As part of the review process, each development conducts a traffic impact analysis and is supposed to identify measures that will be taken by the developer to reduce any adverse traffic impact that is generated in the surrounding area.

“The City Commission has asked staff to explore alternatives (for alleviating traffic congestion),” said Althea Jefferson, Planning and Zoning manager. The City hopes to gather enough feedback to identify key objectives, innovative alternatives, and next steps for reducing traffic congestion and improving mobility.

(BPT) - Each day, thousands of people in the U.S. turn 65, and they're faced with making choices about the Medicare program. Unfortunately, many people's missteps mean they end up paying too much for healthcare coverage.

"A study published by Health Affairs, a peer-reviewed healthcare journal, estimated that more than 20 percent of people are paying at least $500 too much each year for their prescription drug Part D plans," says Tricia Blazier, director of the Allsup Medicare Advisor.

Blazier says the study found that only five percent of Medicare beneficiaries chose the lowest cost Part D plan. Researchers also found that many people overpaid for a Medicare plan, missing out on other plans that would better meet their needs at less cost.

"You may have 20 or more plans to choose from with different features. These plans come with a wide range of costs, and the highest premiums are sometimes double the lowest."

If you're a baby boomer, here are three costly and common mistakes you might be making with your Medicare coverage.

You make hasty choices because you're employed. "Often people automatically signed up for Medicare at 65 even if they were still working," says Blazier. "But health benefits are becoming more complicated and this is less common."

For example, more baby boomers are using high-deductible health plans (HDHP), which carry restrictions for people who want to use Medicare, too. There also are penalties for improperly delaying enrollment in certain parts of Medicare.

"Making these choices quickly can carry some unexpected costs," says Blazier.

"You don't want to miss your first-time enrollment period without taking a closer look."

You sign up for traditional Medicare for convenience. Traditional Medicare includes Part A, hospital services, and Part B, medical services. Many first-time enrollees also buy a prescription drug Part D plan and supplemental insurance, or Medigap. "You may think it's easier to just enroll in the traditional package of Medicare benefits, but your costs can really add up."

Nearly 16 million people enrolled in Medicare Advantage plans in 2014, an increase of almost 20 percent since 2012, according to data provided by the Kaiser Family Foundation.

Medicare Advantage plans offer an alternative to traditional Medicare. They can replace several plans with one form of healthcare coverage. "You can see some incredible cost savings by taking a look at Medicare Advantage plans," says Blazier.

You look for shortcuts by choosing a family member or friend's Medicare plan.

It can be challenging to find accurate, up-to-date information in order to make fair comparisons among all the options. Dr. Adler Using Laser In Battle Against Toe Fungus

According to the American Podiatric Medical Association, approximately 40% of patients visiting a podiatrist have complaints or signs of toe fungus. It may begin with tenderness or pain in the toe, developing into an unsightly thick, darkened nail, and it can spread from toe to toe. In fact, the fungus can get so out of control that it can infect the foot and ankle.

Topical treatment such as Lamisil cream usually is the first course of therapy for a mild or moderate case. However, long-term use or oral antifungal medication is not recommended due to the toxic side effects Lamisil can have on the liver.

This is a special risk if a patient is taking other medications, including excessive use of Tylenol that can manifest the same hepatic damage.

Over the past few years, Dr. Charlton Adler has been following closely the application and reported results of laser therapy on fungus toenails and other podiatric and wound situations.

He is pleased to announce that he now is able to add this service as a therapeutic option in his office in North Miami Beach.

“The introduction of laser in treating toe fungus has had a major impact on attacking this uncomfortable and unsightly problem,” says Dr. Adler. He further explains that Onychomycosis, the medical term for fungal infection of the nail, is often ignored because it can be present for years without causing pain. “When the fungus imbeds itself under the nail,” he adds, “ the nail surface can become darker in color and the area can develop an odor. The fungus lives on debris under the nail, and white marks can appear on the nail plate.”

Approved for the treatment of nail fungus five years ago by the Food and Drug Administration, the special appeal of lasers is that it selectively heats and destroys harmful fungi while sparing healthy surrounding skin. Because of the intensity of the heat generated by laser rays, Enrique Mechulon a specially trained and certified laser technician working with Dr. Adler, says that both he and the patient wear laser protective glasses and take several rest periods during the 40-minute process.

“I have already witnessed many success stories where patients have spent years and thousands of dollars to get rid of their nail fungus,” says Mechulon. “Depending on the patient’s general health and nail problem, it can take anywhere from one to nine treatments, but the results are there with minimum risk to the body,” he adds.

“I have wanted to offer this therapy for quite a while,” says Dr. Adler. “However, I am cautious in my approach, and I needed more proof on studies and reports.” Dr Adler adds that research shows that 80% of all toe fungus has been healed using laser therapy. “This is in contrast to topical ointments that only work 50% of the time,” says Adler, “and with topical treatment, the infection usually returns.”

Getting Help With Hospital Discharge

Perhaps you know someone in the same situation: My dad is coming out of the hospital next week. I live in Connecticut and he lives alone in North Miami Beach.

I have to get home. My son is graduating this weekend and my daughter is getting married in 2 weeks. I’m so torn up over everything.

Can you please help me?

Of course. Dilemmas like this are our specialties.

First of all, Always Classic Care works closely as a team with other professional groups. We can recommend an RN Geriatric Care Manager to meet with you immediately, take over from this point on, and relieve you of your anxiety about your dad. The care manager will work with the hospital Case Manager in completing all discharge planning, clarifying any confusion for your dad, carry out all orders, and work closely with Always Classic Care all along the way.

Always Classic Care will assign one of our professionally trained and carefully screened aides for your dad, who will meet him at the hospital, pack his clothes and belongings and accompany him home. The nurse care manager will supervise everything, including checking dad’s food status at home, any shopping to be done and a reconciliation of new medications versus his previous ones, as per the discharge orders. If there are any questions, contraindications or other problems, the nurse care manager will call your father’s physician for clarification. The care manager will make all follow-up appointments with dad’s doctors, and will meet your dad and his aide at the doctor’s office, interacting with the doctor as your father’s advocate. The care manager will call you with a report.

If any skilled services are needed as per the hospital discharge order (such as wound care, physical therapy or diabetes management), Always Classic Care will arrange for that for your dad and the nurse care manager will oversee it. You will receive a regular email report on his progress, and you are welcome to call at any time.

All services can continue or be discontinued at your discretion. Always Classic Care can supply an aide for your dad for any amount of time you request from a few hours a day to 24/7 sleep-in, which can be adjusted as he progresses. Based on his needs, the aide can help with his showering and dressing, meal preparation, light housekeeping, laundry , shopping and transportation to the doctor or other appointments. The aide can be male or female, can help with basic exercise like walking, constantly monitor for safety, and is trained to report any changes in dad’s condition immediately.

I, as owner of Always Classic Care, personally oversee all of the aide activity, and work closely with the nurse care manager.

What if my dad refuses this care, but I feel he needs it?

Always Classic Care is part of team of professionals. We can send a social worker or nurse to talk to your dad and explain the importance of having this care from a safety perspective. We will try to convince him as to how at least for the first few days, until he regains his strength, this is important, and will get his physican involved, if needed. We will also reinforce how this would give you peace of mind, as well.

However, the bottom line is, that if he is of sound mind and is making his own decisions, he has a right as a patient to refuse. If he allows us to come in, we can still provide some type of oversight, and would be glad to talk to you about it.

REFRESHING SALADS SHRIMP SALAD 1 pound shrimp, peeled and deveined 2 hard-cooked eggs, chopped 1/2 cup celery, thinly sliced 1/2 cup mayonnaise 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard 1/4 teaspoon onion powder salt and pepper to taste 1. Parboil shrimp in a small saucepan of salted boiling water until pink.

2. Strain shrimp and rinse in very cold water.

3. In a small bowl, mix the shrimp, eggs, celery, mayonnaise, mustard, onion powder, salt and pepper.

4. Chill in the refrigerator at least 1 hour.

PASTA SALAD Salad Ingredients: 2 cups cooked rotini pasta, drained (about 1 cup uncooked) 1/2 cup chopped red bell pepper 1/2 cup chopped green bell pepper 1 cup cubed provolone cheese 1 carrot, cut into julienne strips 1/4 cup minced red onion 1 (2 1/4 oz.) can sliced pitted black olives 1/4 pound salami, chopped Dressing Ingredients: 1/3 cup extra virgin olive oil 2 Tablespoons red wine vinegar 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon ground black

Treat your family to something light and tasty during those hot days

1. Place chicken in a bowl and cover with waxed paper.

2. Cook in microwave about 5 minutes. Remove and drain chicken to remove any fat.

Prepare taco mix as directed, substituting chicken for beef.

3. Place lettuce, tomatoes, and chips in a large bowl.

4. Add drained beans, grated cheese, and salad dressing.

Mix well. Serve immediately.
